In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.1Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν Λόγος καὶ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν καὶ Θεὸς ἦν Λόγος
He was with God in the beginning.2Οὗτος ἦν ἐν ἀρχῇ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.3πάντα δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ χωρὶς αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο οὐδὲ ἕν γέγονεν
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.4ἐν αὐτῷ ζωὴ ἦν καὶ ζωὴ ἦν τὸ φῶς τῶν ἀνθρώπων
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.5καὶ τὸ φῶς ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ φαίνει καὶ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβεν
There was a man sent from God whose name was John.6Ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος ἀπεσταλμένος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωάννης
He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.7οὗτος ἦλθεν εἰς μαρτυρίαν ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός ἵνα πάντες πιστεύσωσιν δι’ αὐτοῦ
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.8οὐκ ἦν ἐκεῖνος τὸ φῶς ἀλλ’ ἵνα μαρτυρήσῃ περὶ τοῦ φωτός
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.9Ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινὸν φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.10ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἦν καὶ κόσμος δι’ αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ κόσμος αὐτὸν οὐκ ἔγνω
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.11εἰς τὰ ἴδια ἦλθεν καὶ οἱ ἴδιοι αὐτὸν οὐ παρέλαβον
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--12ὅσοι δὲ ἔλαβον αὐτόν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τέκνα Θεοῦ γενέσθαι τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ
children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.13οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος ἀνδρὸς ἀλλ’ ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.14Καὶ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ Πατρός πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας
(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, "This is the one I spoke about when I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'")15Ἰωάννης μαρτυρεῖ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κέκραγεν λέγων Οὗτος ἦν ὃν εἶπον ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.16Ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πληρώματος αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς πάντες ἐλάβομεν καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.17ὅτι νόμος διὰ Μωϋσέως ἐδόθη χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐγένετο
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.18Θεὸν οὐδεὶς ἑώρακεν πώποτε μονογενὴς Θεὸς ὢν εἰς τὸν κόλπον τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκεῖνος ἐξηγήσατο
Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.19Καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν μαρτυρία τοῦ Ἰωάννου ὅτε ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευίτας ἵνα ἐρωτήσωσιν αὐτόν Σὺ τίς εἶ
He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Messiah."20καὶ ὡμολόγησεν καὶ οὐκ ἠρνήσατο καὶ ὡμολόγησεν ὅτι Ἐγὼ οὐκ εἰμὶ Χριστός
They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?"
Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"22Εἶπαν οὖν αὐτῷ Τίς εἶ ἵνα ἀπόκρισιν δῶμεν τοῖς πέμψασιν ἡμᾶς τί λέγεις περὶ σεαυτοῦ
John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'"23Ἔφη Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Εὐθύνατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου καθὼς εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας προφήτης
Now the Pharisees who had been sent24Καὶ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἦσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων
questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"25καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τί οὖν βαπτίζεις εἰ σὺ οὐκ εἶ Χριστὸς οὐδὲ Ἠλίας οὐδὲ προφήτης
"I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.26Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰωάννης λέγων Ἐγὼ βαπτίζω ἐν ὕδατι μέσος ὑμῶν ἕστηκεν* ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε
He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."27 ὀπίσω μου ἐρχόμενος οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἄξιος ἵνα λύσω αὐτοῦ τὸν ἱμάντα τοῦ ὑποδήματος
This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.28Ταῦτα ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐγένετο πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου ὅπου ἦν Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!29Τῇ ἐπαύριον βλέπει τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου
This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'30οὗτός ἐστιν ὑπὲρ οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον Ὀπίσω μου ἔρχεται ἀνὴρ ὃς ἔμπροσθέν μου γέγονεν ὅτι πρῶτός μου ἦν
I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."31κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον ἐγὼ ἐν ὕδατι βαπτίζων
Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.32Καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν Ἰωάννης λέγων ὅτι Τεθέαμαι τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον ὡς περιστερὰν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν
And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'33κἀγὼ οὐκ ᾔδειν αὐτόν ἀλλ’ πέμψας με βαπτίζειν ἐν ὕδατι ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν Ἐφ’ ὃν ἂν ἴδῃς τὸ Πνεῦμα καταβαῖνον καὶ μένον ἐπ’ αὐτόν οὗτός ἐστιν βαπτίζων ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ
I have seen and I testify that this is God's Chosen One."34κἀγὼ ἑώρακα καὶ μεμαρτύρηκα ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.35Τῇ ἐπαύριον πάλιν εἱστήκει Ἰωάννης καὶ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ δύο
When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"36καὶ ἐμβλέψας τῷ Ἰησοῦ περιπατοῦντι λέγει Ἴδε Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.37καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ δύο μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος καὶ ἠκολούθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"38Στραφεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς καὶ θεασάμενος αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθοῦντας λέγει αὐτοῖς Τί ζητεῖτε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ῥαββί λέγεται μεθερμηνευόμενον Διδάσκαλε Ποῦ μένεις
"Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.39Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἔρχεσθε καὶ ὄψεσθε ἦλθαν οὖν καὶ εἶδαν ποῦ μένει καὶ παρ’ αὐτῷ ἔμειναν τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ὥρα ἦν ὡς δεκάτη
Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.40Ἦν Ἀνδρέας ἀδελφὸς Σίμωνος Πέτρου εἷς ἐκ τῶν δύο τῶν ἀκουσάντων παρὰ Ἰωάννου καὶ ἀκολουθησάντων αὐτῷ
The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ).41εὑρίσκει οὗτος πρῶτον τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν ἴδιον Σίμωνα καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Εὑρήκαμεν τὸν Μεσσίαν ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Χριστός
And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).42ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐμβλέψας αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Σὺ εἶ Σίμων υἱὸς Ἰωάννου σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς ἑρμηνεύεται Πέτρος
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me."43Τῇ ἐπαύριον ἠθέλησεν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ εὑρίσκει Φίλιππον καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀκολούθει μοι
Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.44ἦν δὲ Φίλιππος ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδά ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Ἀνδρέου καὶ Πέτρου
Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."45Εὑρίσκει Φίλιππος τὸν Ναθαναὴλ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὃν ἔγραψεν Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ καὶ οἱ προφῆται εὑρήκαμεν Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν τοῦ Ἰωσὴφ τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ
"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip.46Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ἐκ Ναζαρὲτ δύναταί τι ἀγαθὸν εἶναι Λέγει αὐτῷ Φίλιππος Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit."47Εἶδεν ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς τὸν Ναθαναὴλ ἐρχόμενον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ λέγει περὶ αὐτοῦ Ἴδε ἀληθῶς Ἰσραηλίτης ἐν δόλος οὐκ ἔστιν
"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."48Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Πόθεν με γινώσκεις Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Πρὸ τοῦ σε Φίλιππον φωνῆσαι ὄντα ὑπὸ τὴν συκῆν εἶδόν σε
Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel."49Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Ναθαναήλ Ῥαββί σὺ εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ σὺ Βασιλεὺς εἶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ
Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that."50Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὅτι εἶπόν σοι ὅτι εἶδόν σε ὑποκάτω τῆς συκῆς πιστεύεις μείζω τούτων ὄψῃ
He then added, "Very truly I tell you, you will see 'heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on' the Son of Man."51καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
