As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.1Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"2καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Ῥαββί τίς ἥμαρτεν οὗτος οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ
"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.3Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ
As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.4ἡμᾶς δεῖ ἐργάζεσθαι τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πέμψαντός με ἕως ἡμέρα ἐστίν ἔρχεται νὺξ ὅτε οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐργάζεσθαι
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."5ὅταν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ φῶς εἰμι τοῦ κόσμου
After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes.6Ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος καὶ ἐπέχρισεν* αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
"Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means "Sent"). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.7καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ὕπαγε νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων
His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?"8Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι προσαίτης ἦν ἔλεγον Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν
Some claimed that he was. Others said, "No, he only looks like him." But he himself insisted, "I am the man."9Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὗτός ἐστιν ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Οὐχί ἀλλὰ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι
"How then were your eyes opened?" they asked.10Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ Πῶς οὖν ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί
He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see."11Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος ἄνθρωπος λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὅτι Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι ἀπελθὼν οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος ἀνέβλεψα
"Where is this man?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said.12Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος Λέγει Οὐκ οἶδα
They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.13Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους τόν ποτε τυφλόν
Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath.14ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ἡμέρᾳ τὸν πηλὸν ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see."15πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς καὶ ἐνιψάμην καὶ βλέπω
Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others asked, "How can a sinner perform such signs?" So they were divided.16Ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ Ἄλλοι [δὲ] ἔλεγον Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν Καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς
Then they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened." The man replied, "He is a prophet."17λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν Τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι Προφήτης ἐστίν
They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents.18Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος
"Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?"19καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες Οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ὑμῶν ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι
"We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind.20Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ἡμῶν καὶ ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη
But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself."21πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει οὐκ οἴδαμεν τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸς περὶ ἑαυτοῦ λαλήσει
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.22Ταῦτα εἶπαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται
That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."23διὰ τοῦτο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπαν ὅτι Ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸν ἐπερωτήσατε
A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God by telling the truth," they said. "We know this man is a sinner."24Ἐφώνησαν οὖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν
He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!"25Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ἐκεῖνος Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν οὐκ οἶδα ἓν οἶδα ὅτι τυφλὸς ὢν ἄρτι βλέπω
Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"26Εἶπον* οὖν αὐτῷ Τί ἐποίησέν σοι πῶς ἤνοιξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?"27Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι
Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses!28Καὶ ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπον* Σὺ μαθητὴς εἶ ἐκείνου ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί
We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from."29ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι Μωϋσεῖ λελάληκεν Θεός τοῦτον δὲ οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν
The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.30Ἀπεκρίθη ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς
We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.31οἴδαμεν ὅτι «ὁ Θεὸς» ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐκ ἀκούει ἀλλ’ ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ τούτου ἀκούει
Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.32ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."33εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν
To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out.34Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"35Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν εἶπεν Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
"Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."36Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν Καὶ τίς ἐστιν Κύριε ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν
Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."37Εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν
Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.38 δὲ ἔφη Πιστεύω Κύριε καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ
Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."39Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς Εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσιν καὶ οἱ βλέποντες τυφλοὶ γένωνται
Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?"40ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄντες καὶ εἶπον* αὐτῷ Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν
Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.41Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε οὐκ ἂν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι Βλέπομεν ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει
