New International VersionGreek Study Bible
"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.1Προσέχετε δὲ τὴν δικαιοσύνην ὑμῶν μὴ ποιεῖν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι αὐτοῖς εἰ δὲ μή¦γε μισθὸν οὐκ ἔχετε παρὰ τῷ Πατρὶ ὑμῶν τῷ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.2Ὅταν οὖν ποιῇς ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ σαλπίσῃς ἔμπροσθέν σου ὥσπερ οἱ ὑποκριταὶ ποιοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς ῥύμαις ὅπως δοξασθῶσιν ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,3σοῦ δὲ ποιοῦντος ἐλεημοσύνην μὴ γνώτω ἀριστερά σου τί ποιεῖ δεξιά σου
so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.4ὅπως σου ἐλεημοσύνη ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ ἀποδώσει σοι
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.5Καὶ ὅταν προσεύχησθε οὐκ ἔσεσθε ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταί ὅτι φιλοῦσιν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς γωνίαις τῶν πλατειῶν ἑστῶτες προσεύχεσθαι ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.6σὺ δὲ ὅταν προσεύχῃ εἴσελθε εἰς τὸ ταμεῖόν σου καὶ κλείσας τὴν θύραν σου πρόσευξαι τῷ Πατρί σου τῷ ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ ἀποδώσει σοι
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.7Προσευχόμενοι δὲ μὴ βατταλογήσητε ὥσπερ οἱ ἐθνικοί δοκοῦσιν γὰρ ὅτι ἐν τῇ πολυλογίᾳ αὐτῶν εἰσακουσθήσονται
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.8μὴ οὖν ὁμοιωθῆτε αὐτοῖς οἶδεν γὰρ (ὁ θεὸς) Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὧν χρείαν ἔχετε πρὸ τοῦ ὑμᾶς αἰτῆσαι αὐτόν
"This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,9Οὕτως οὖν προσεύχεσθε ὑμεῖς Πάτερ ἡμῶν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς Ἁγιασθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.10Ἐλθέτω* βασιλεία σου Γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου Ὡς ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς
Give us today our daily bread.11Τὸν ἄρτον ἡμῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον δὸς ἡμῖν σήμερον
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.12Καὶ ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ὀφειλήματα ἡμῶν Ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν τοῖς ὀφειλέταις ἡμῶν
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'13Καὶ μὴ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς εἰς πειρασμόν Ἀλλὰ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ ⧼Ὅτι σοῦ ἐστιν βασιλεία καὶ δύναμις καὶ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας Ἀμήν⧽
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.14Ἐὰν γὰρ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν ἀφήσει καὶ ὑμῖν Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος
But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.15ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀφῆτε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις (τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν) οὐδὲ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ἀφήσει τὰ παραπτώματα ὑμῶν
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.16Ὅταν δὲ νηστεύητε μὴ γίνεσθε ὡς οἱ ὑποκριταὶ σκυθρωποί ἀφανίζουσιν γὰρ τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν ὅπως φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύοντες ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπέχουσιν τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,17σὺ δὲ νηστεύων ἄλειψαί σου τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ τὸ πρόσωπόν σου νίψαι
so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.18ὅπως μὴ φανῇς τοῖς ἀνθρώποις νηστεύων ἀλλὰ τῷ Πατρί σου τῷ ἐν τῷ κρυφαίῳ καὶ Πατήρ σου βλέπων ἐν τῷ κρυφαίῳ ἀποδώσει σοι
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.19Μὴ θησαυρίζετε ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅπου σὴς καὶ βρῶσις ἀφανίζει καὶ ὅπου κλέπται διορύσσουσιν καὶ κλέπτουσιν
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.20θησαυρίζετε δὲ ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐν οὐρανῷ ὅπου οὔτε σὴς οὔτε βρῶσις ἀφανίζει καὶ ὅπου κλέπται οὐ διορύσσουσιν οὐδὲ κλέπτουσιν
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.21ὅπου γάρ ἐστιν θησαυρός σου ἐκεῖ ἔσται καὶ καρδία σου
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.22 λύχνος τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν ὀφθαλμός ἐὰν οὖν ὀφθαλμός σου ἁπλοῦς ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου φωτεινὸν ἔσται
But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!23ἐὰν δὲ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρὸς ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου σκοτεινὸν ἔσται εἰ οὖν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ σκότος ἐστίν τὸ σκότος πόσον
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.24Οὐδεὶς δύναται δυσὶ κυρίοις δουλεύειν γὰρ τὸν ἕνα μισήσει καὶ τὸν ἕτερον ἀγαπήσει ἑνὸς ἀνθέξεται καὶ τοῦ ἑτέρου καταφρονήσει οὐ δύνασθε Θεῷ δουλεύειν καὶ μαμωνᾷ
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?25Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε τί πίητε μηδὲ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε οὐχὶ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?26ἐμβλέψατε εἰς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν οὐδὲ συνάγουσιν εἰς ἀποθήκας καὶ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος τρέφει αὐτά οὐχ ὑμεῖς μᾶλλον διαφέρετε αὐτῶν
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?27τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ πῆχυν ἕνα
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.28Καὶ περὶ ἐνδύματος τί μεριμνᾶτε καταμάθετε τὰ κρίνα τοῦ ἀγροῦ πῶς αὐξάνουσιν οὐ κοπιῶσιν οὐδὲ νήθουσιν
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.29λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you--you of little faith?30εἰ δὲ τὸν χόρτον τοῦ ἀγροῦ σήμερον ὄντα καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον Θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέννυσιν οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς ὀλιγόπιστοι
So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'31Μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε λέγοντες Τί φάγωμεν Τί πίωμεν Τί περιβαλώμεθα
For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.32πάντα γὰρ ταῦτα τὰ ἔθνη ἐπιζητοῦσιν οἶδεν γὰρ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οὐράνιος ὅτι χρῄζετε τούτων ἁπάντων
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.33ζητεῖτε δὲ πρῶτον τὴν βασιλείαν [τοῦ θεοῦ] καὶ τὴν δικαιοσύνην αὐτοῦ καὶ ταῦτα πάντα προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.34Μὴ οὖν μεριμνήσητε εἰς τὴν αὔριον γὰρ αὔριον μεριμνήσει ἑαυτῆς ἀρκετὸν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ κακία αὐτῆς
