Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.1Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate.
Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”2So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.3And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.
Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”4Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!”
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.5But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply.
Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.6Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing.
And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.7And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection.
Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.8So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom.
But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”9“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked.
For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.10For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”12So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?”
So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”13And they shouted back, “Crucify Him!”
Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”14“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”
So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.15And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.16Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together.
And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,17They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and set it on His head.
and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”18And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.19They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down and bowed before Him.
And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.20After they had mocked Him, they removed the purple robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.
Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.21Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.22They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull.
Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.23There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.24And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take.
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.25It was the third hour when they crucified Him.
And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.27Along with Jesus, they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left.
So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”28
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,29And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”30come down from the cross and save Yourself!”
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.31In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself!
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him.
Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”34At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”35When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.”
Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”36And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”
And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.37But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last.
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”39When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,40And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.41These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.
Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,42Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.44Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so.
So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.45When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.46So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was placed.
