After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death.1Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a covert way to arrest Jesus and kill Him.
But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”2“But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”
And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head.3While Jesus was in Bethany reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke open the jar and poured it on Jesus’ head.
But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted?4Some of those present, however, expressed their indignation to one another: “Why this waste of perfume?
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply.5It could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her.
But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me.6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone; why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful deed to Me.
For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me.
She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial.8She has done what she could to anoint My body in advance of My burial.
Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”9And truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them.10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him.11They were delighted to hear this, and they promised to give him money. So Judas began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”12On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him.13So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him,
Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’14and whichever house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’
Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”15And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.16So the disciples left and went into the city, where they found everything as Jesus had described. And they prepared the Passover.
In the evening He came with the twelve.17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”18And while they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you who is eating with Me will betray Me.”
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said,Is it I?”19They began to be grieved and to ask Him one after another, “Surely not I?”
He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish.20He answered, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is dipping his hand into the bowl with Me.
The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it; this is My body.”
Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.23Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.24He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”25Truly I tell you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered.’27Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
“But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.29Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I never will.”
Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”30“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”
But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all said likewise.31But Peter kept insisting, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the others said the same thing.
Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”32Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus told His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed.33He took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be deeply troubled and distressed.
Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”34Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.”
He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.35Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.
And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.36“Abba, Father,” He said, “all things are possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.”
Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?37Then Jesus returned and found them sleeping. “Simon, are you asleep?” He asked. “Were you not able to keep watch for one hour?
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”38Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words.39Again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing.
And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.40And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping—for their eyes were heavy. And they did not know what to answer Him.
Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.41When Jesus returned the third time, He said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”42Rise, let us go. See, My betrayer is approaching!”
And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, scribes, and elders.
Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him and lead Him away securely.”
As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.45Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him.46Then the men seized Jesus and arrested Him.
And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.47And one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me?48Jesus asked the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw?
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me. But this has happened that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.”
Then they all forsook Him and fled.50Then everyone deserted Him and fled.
Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him,51One young man who had been following Jesus was wearing a linen cloth around his body. They caught hold of him,
and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.52but he pulled free of the linen cloth and ran away naked.
And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes.53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders, and scribes assembled.
But Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.54Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the officers and warmed himself by the fire.
Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.55Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any.
For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.56For many bore false witness against Jesus, but their testimony was inconsistent.
Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying,57Then some men stood up and testified falsely against Him:
“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ”58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple, and in three days I will build another that is made without hands.’ ”
But not even then did their testimony agree.59But even their testimony was inconsistent.
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?”60So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”
But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”61But Jesus remained silent and made no reply. Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”62“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?63At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “Why do we need any more witnesses?
You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.64You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.
Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.65Then some of them began to spit on Him. They blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and said to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in His face.
Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came.66While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the servant girls of the high priest came down
And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”67and saw him warming himself there. She looked at Peter and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.”
But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.68But he denied it. “I do not know or even understand what you are talking about,” he said. Then he went out to the gateway, and the rooster crowed.
And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.”69There the servant girl saw him and again said to those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.”
But he denied it again. And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.70But he denied it again. After a little while, those standing nearby said once more to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you too are a Galilean.”
Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”71But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!”
A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.72And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
