Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.1Καὶ εὐθὺς πρωῒ συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες* οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ
Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”2Καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν Πιλᾶτος Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ λέγει Σὺ λέγεις
And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.3Καὶ κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς πολλά
Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!”4 δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν ἴδε πόσα σου κατηγοροῦσιν
But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.5 δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίθη ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν Πιλᾶτον
Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.6Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο
And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.7ἦν δὲ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν
Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.8καὶ ἀναβὰς ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς
But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”9 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων
For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.10ἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.11Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς
Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”12 δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί οὖν ‹θέλετε› ποιήσω ὃν λέγετε τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων
So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”13Οἱ δὲ πάλιν ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν
Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”14 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί γὰρ ἐποίησεν κακόν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν
So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.15 δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.16Οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν ἔσω τῆς αὐλῆς ἐστιν Πραιτώριον καὶ συνκαλοῦσιν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν
And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,17καὶ ἐνδιδύσκουσιν αὐτὸν πορφύραν καὶ περιτιθέασιν αὐτῷ πλέξαντες ἀκάνθινον στέφανον
and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”18καὶ ἤρξαντο ἀσπάζεσθαι αὐτόν Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.19Καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν καλάμῳ καὶ ἐνέπτυον αὐτῷ καὶ τιθέντες τὰ γόνατα προσεκύνουν αὐτῷ
And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.20καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν πορφύραν καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ‹ἴδια› Καὶ ἐξάγουσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα σταυρώσωσιν αὐτόν
Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.21Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ
And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.22Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Γολγοθᾶν τόπον ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον* Κρανίου τόπος
Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.23καὶ ἐδίδουν αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.24Καὶ σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπ’ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.25Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν
And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26καὶ ἦν ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.27Καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων αὐτοῦ
So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”28⧼Καὶ ἐπληρώθη γραφὴ λέγουσα Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη⧽
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,29Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες Οὐὰ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις
save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”30σῶσον σεαυτὸν καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ
Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.31Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.32 Χριστὸς Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμεν καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν
Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33Καὶ γενομένης ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”34καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἐλωῒ Ἐλωῒ λεμὰ* σαβαχθάνι* ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Θεός μου Θεός μου εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με
Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”35Καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ
Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”36Δραμὼν δέ τις καὶ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν λέγων Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν
And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.37 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38Καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω
So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”39Ἰδὼν δὲ κεντυρίων παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς οὗτος ἄνθρωπος Υἱὸς Θεοῦ ἦν
There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome,40Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι ἐν αἷς καὶ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη
who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.41αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,42Καὶ ἤδη ὀψίας γενομένης ἐπεὶ ἦν Παρασκευή ἐστιν προσάββατον
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time.44 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἐθαύμασεν εἰ ἤδη τέθνηκεν καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν κεντυρίωνα ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν εἰ πάλαι ἀπέθανεν
So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.45καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος ἐδωρήσατο τὸ πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ
Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.46Καὶ ἀγοράσας σινδόνα καθελὼν αὐτὸν ἐνείλησεν τῇ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν* αὐτὸν ἐν μνημείῳ* ἦν λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας καὶ προσεκύλισεν λίθον ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τοῦ μνημείου
And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.47 δὲ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰωσῆτος ἐθεώρουν ποῦ τέθειται
