Preparations for the Temple

Now Solomon purposed to build a house for the Name of the LORD

Solomon began the work appointed to him as David’s successor: building the temple in Jerusalem. God had promised David that his son would establish a house for His Name, and Solomon’s preparations brought that promise to fulfillment. The temple would house the Ark of the Covenant and stand as Israel’s central place of worship, bearing witness to the LORD’s covenant presence and rule among His people.

1Ki 5:5 So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD…
1Ch 22:7-10 “My son,” said David to Solomon, “it was in my heart”…
1Ch 28:2-6 It was in my heart to build a house as a resting place…

and a royal palace for himself.

Solomon also prepared to build a palace suitable for the administration and dignity of the united kingdom. The temple and palace projects demonstrated both the religious and governmental order of Solomon’s reign. While the temple belonged to the worship of the LORD, the palace served as the seat of the king’s household and national leadership.

1Ki 7:1 Solomon, however, took thirteen years…
1Ki 9:10 Now at the end of the twenty years during which Solomon…
1Ki 9:15 This is the account of the forced labor…

So he conscripted 70,000 porters,

Solomon assembled a vast labor force to transport stone, timber, and other supplies for the temple project. Their number reflects the scale of the work and the resources required to build the Lord’s house in Jerusalem.

1Ki 5:15 Solomon had 70,000 porters and 80,000 stonecutters…
1Ki 9:20-21 As for all the people who remained of the Amorites…
Exo 1:11 So the Egyptians appointed taskmasters over the Israelites…

80,000 stonecutters in the mountains,

These workers quarried and shaped stone from the hill country for the temple’s foundations and structure. The use of prepared stone emphasized the permanence and splendor of the building that would replace the portable tabernacle.

1Ch 22:2 So David gave orders to gather the foreigners…
1Ki 5:17-18 And the king commanded them to quarry large, costly stones…
1Ki 6:7 The temple was constructed using finished stones…

and 3,600 supervisors.

Overseers directed the laborers and maintained order throughout the construction effort. Solomon’s careful administration ensured that the work proceeded according to the plans God had given for the temple.

1Ki 5:16 not including his 3,300 foremen who supervised the workers.
1Ki 9:23 They were also the chief officers over Solomon’s projects:…
Exo 5:6-14 That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters…

Then Solomon sent word to Hiram king of Tyre:

Solomon continued the alliance David had established with Hiram. Tyre was a powerful Phoenician city known for maritime trade, skilled laborers, and the forests of Lebanon. Hiram’s friendship provided Israel with resources and craftsmen needed for Solomon’s major building projects.

1Ki 5:1-2 Now when Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been…
1Ki 5:8-9 “I have received your message; I will do all you desire”…

“Do for me as you did for my father David

Solomon appealed to Hiram on the basis of his faithful support for David. He sought to preserve a proven political and economic partnership while carrying forward the work begun during his father’s reign.

2Sa 5:11 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David…
1Ch 14:1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David…
1Ki 5:7 When Hiram received Solomon’s message, he rejoiced…

when you sent him cedars to build himself a house to live in.

Hiram had supplied cedar from Lebanon for David’s royal palace in Jerusalem. The durable, valuable timber reflected the importance of David’s kingship and anticipated Solomon’s request for materials to build the house of the Lord.

2Sa 7:2 he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am”…
1Ch 17:1 After David had settled into his palace, he said to Nathan…
1Ch 22:4 and more cedar logs than could be counted;…

Behold, I am about to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God

Solomon announces the work entrusted to him as David’s son: building the Temple in Jerusalem. Unlike the portable Tabernacle used during Israel’s wilderness years, the Temple would stand as the established center of Israel’s worship and the place associated with the LORD’s presence among His people. It was to bear His Name, belonging wholly to Him and serving no other god.

1Ki 5:5 So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD…
1Ki 8:17 Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house…
2Sa 7:13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will…

to dedicate to Him for burning fragrant incense before Him,

Incense was offered regularly in the Holy Place before the inner sanctuary. Its rising smoke pictured the prayers and worship of Israel brought before God. The Temple’s services were ordered to honor the LORD and maintain the covenant worship He commanded.

Exo 30:7-8 And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it…
Lev 16:12-13 Then he must take a censer full of burning coals…
Luk 1:9-11 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom…

for displaying the showbread continuously,

Twelve loaves were set before the LORD, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Replaced each Sabbath, the bread testified to God’s provision and to Israel’s continuing place before Him as His covenant people.

Exo 25:30 And place the Bread of the Presence on the table…
Lev 24:5-9 You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves…
1Ki 7:48 Solomon also made all the furnishings for the house…

and for making burnt offerings every morning and evening

Daily sacrifices marked Israel’s constant need for atonement and consecration. Morning and evening offerings ensured that worship at the Temple continued without interruption.

Exo 29:38-39 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar…
Num 28:3-4 And tell them that this is the food offering…
1Ch 16:40 regularly present burnt offerings to the LORD…

as well as on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts of the LORD our God.

The regular calendar of worship included weekly Sabbaths, monthly observances, and annual feasts. These gatherings called Israel to remember the LORD’s deeds, obey His law, and worship Him as the God who had redeemed and preserved them.

Num 28:9-10 On the Sabbath day, present two unblemished lambs…
Num 28:11-15 At the beginning of every month, you are to present…
Lev 23:1-4 Then the LORD said to Moses,…

This is ordained for Israel forever.

The Temple service was established by God’s command for Israel under the Mosaic covenant. Its sacrifices and ceremonies anticipated the complete sacrifice of Christ, while the worship of God and the reality of His presence remain central to His people.

Num 18:23 The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting…
Lev 16:34 This is to be a permanent statute for you,…
Exo 29:9 Wrap the sashes around Aaron and his sons…

The house that I am building will be great,

Solomon’s temple was designed as Israel’s central sanctuary, housing the Ark of the Covenant and serving as the appointed place for worship and sacrifice. Its costly materials and skilled workmanship reflected the honor due to the Lord and the importance of David’s dynasty in carrying out God’s purpose for Israel.

1Ch 22:5 And David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced,…
1Ki 8:13 I have indeed built You an exalted house,…
Hag 2:9 The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former…

for our God is greater than all gods.

Israel’s God alone is the living and sovereign Creator; the gods worshiped by surrounding nations were powerless idols. The temple’s splendor was not meant to contain God or rival pagan shrines, but to testify to His unmatched greatness.

Exo 18:11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods…
Psa 135:5 For I know that the LORD is great; our Lord…
Psa 95:3 For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.

But who is able to build a house for Him,

Solomon recognized that no human work could provide God with a true dwelling. Though the temple was built according to God’s command, it could never contain the Creator.

1Ki 8:27 But will God indeed dwell upon the earth?…
2Ch 6:18 But will God indeed dwell with man upon the earth?…
Act 17:24-25 The God who made the world and everything in it…

since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain Him?

God rules over all creation, including every realm of heaven. His presence and majesty exceed the limits of the created order.

Deu 10:14 Behold, to the LORD your God belong the heavens,…
Neh 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens,…
Isa 66:1 This is what the LORD says: “Heaven is My throne…”…

Who then am I, that I should build a house for Him,

As Israel’s king, Solomon possessed great wealth, authority, and skill, yet he saw himself as inadequate for such a task. The temple’s significance rested not on Solomon’s greatness but on God’s gracious choice to place His name there.

2Sa 7:18-20 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…
1Ch 17:16-17 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…
1Ki 8:17-19 Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house…

except as a place to burn sacrifices before Him?

The temple served as the appointed center of Israel’s worship, where sacrifices were offered in obedience to God’s law. Its altar testified that sinners could approach God only through the provision He had made for atonement, ultimately fulfilled in Christ’s sacrifice.

2Ch 7:12 the LORD appeared to him at night and said to him:…
Deu 12:5-6 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…
Exo 29:42-43 For the generations to come, this burnt offering…

Send me, therefore, a craftsman skilled in engraving

Solomon sought a master artisan for the temple work, which David had planned and supplied for but was not permitted to build. The temple’s furnishings and decorations required detailed workmanship worthy of the Lord’s house. Solomon’s request recognized the specialized skill available through Tyre.

Exo 35:30-35 Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the LORD has…
1Ki 7:13-14 Now King Solomon sent to bring Huram from Tyre.…

to work with gold and silver, with bronze and iron,

These metals were used in the temple’s structure, furnishings, vessels, and ornamentation. Gold and silver displayed the temple’s splendor, while bronze and iron provided strength for its practical and decorative elements. Their abundance reflected the resources God had given Israel during Solomon’s reign.

1Ch 28:11-12 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans…
1Ch 29:16 O LORD our God, from Your hand comes all this abundance…

Send me also cedar, cypress, and algum logs from Lebanon,

Lebanon’s forests supplied timber prized for strength, beauty, and resistance to decay. Cedar and cypress were especially suitable for major construction, while algum wood was used for costly decorative work. Solomon sought the finest materials for the temple, reflecting the honor due to God’s dwelling place.

1Ki 6:22 So he overlaid with gold the whole interior of the temple,…
2Ch 3:5 He paneled the main room with cypress…

Hiram’s Reply to Solomon

Then Hiram king of Tyre wrote a letter in reply to Solomon:

Hiram had been a trusted ally of David and continued that friendship with Solomon. Tyre, a leading Phoenician port city, possessed skilled craftsmen, maritime trade networks, and access to Lebanon’s cedar forests. Its cooperation supplied materials and labor essential for building the temple and royal complex, demonstrating peaceful relations between Israel and its northern neighbor.

1Ki 9:10-14 Now at the end of the twenty years during which Solomon…
2Ch 8:2 Solomon rebuilt the cities Hiram had given him…

1Ki 10:9 Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delighted in you.…
Deu 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you…
Psa 47:4 He chooses our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob…

He has set you over them as king.”

Solomon’s rule was not presented merely as a political succession but as God’s appointment in fulfillment of His promise to David. His wisdom, resources, and opportunity to build the temple confirmed that the LORD had established him to govern Israel and lead the nation during a time of peace.

1Ch 28:5-6 And of all my sons—for the LORD has given me many sons—…
1Ki 1:30 I will carry out this very day exactly what I swore to you…

And Hiram added:

Hiram of Tyre had maintained a beneficial alliance with David and continued it with Solomon. Tyre supplied skilled craftsmen and valuable materials, while Israel provided agricultural goods. Their cooperation served the temple project and strengthened both kingdoms.
