Deliverance from False Prophets

Now there were also false prophets among the people,

Israel’s history included men who claimed divine authority while turning the nation toward idolatry, rebellion, and false security. Balaam sought profit through divination, and the prophets of Baal opposed the worship of the Lord. God repeatedly exposed such leaders because their messages contradicted His revealed word and corrupted the people.

Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…

just as there will be false teachers among you.

Similar deceivers would arise within the visible Christian community. They would not merely oppose the church from outside but would claim a place among believers while promoting teaching contrary to the apostolic gospel.

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly states that in later times…

They will secretly introduce destructive heresies,

Their errors would be brought in gradually and presented in ways that could appear acceptable. These teachings would divide believers, weaken obedience to Christ, and lead people away from the truth necessary for salvation and faithful living.

Though they professed to belong to Christ’s people, their teaching and conduct would reject His authority, person, and saving work. Christ’s death establishes His rightful claim over all who bear His name, making their denial especially serious.

bringing swift destruction on themselves.

Their apparent success would not delay God’s judgment. By rejecting the truth and leading others into error, they would bring certain ruin upon themselves.

Pro 1:27 when your dread comes like a storm, and your destruction…

Many will follow in their depravity,

False teachers would not remain isolated; many within the church would adopt their immoral conduct and distorted doctrine. Their rebellion against God’s standards would be expressed not only in what they taught but in how they lived, blending Christian language with practices shaped by the surrounding pagan culture.

and because of them the way of truth will be defamed.

The Christian faith would be slandered by outsiders who saw the corruption of those claiming Christ’s name. Such conduct obscured the truth of the gospel, harmed the church’s witness, and gave opponents reason to speak against the faith.

these false teachers

These false teachers claim to speak for God while rejecting Christ’s authority and the truth entrusted to the apostles. They threaten the church from within.

if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction,

Fire and sulfur fell upon the cities, reducing them to ashes and bringing complete devastation. Their ruin demonstrated that God’s judgment was neither symbolic nor partial; the cities that had prospered in rebellion were brought to an end, emphasizing the finality of divine judgment.

Peter describes people who had received clear knowledge of God’s truth through the gospel and the apostolic witness. With that knowledge came responsibility, making their rejection more serious than the ignorance of those who had never heard.
