Berean Study Bible The Woman and the DragonJohn sees a symbolic vision of events directed by God and unfolding on a cosmic scale. The heavenly setting shows that the conflict about to be revealed stands behind earthly history. Mat 24:30 At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear… a woman clothed in the sun, The woman represents Israel, from whom the Messiah came. Her radiance reflects the honor and calling God gave His covenant people. Sng 6:10 Who is this who shines like the dawn, as fair as the moon,… with the moon under her feet Her position over the moon portrays exaltation and authority, not vulnerability to the changing conditions of the world. Psa 8:3-8 When I behold Your heavens, the work of Your fingers… and a crown of twelve stars on her head. The twelve stars identify her with the twelve tribes of Israel. The crown portrays the dignity of the nation through which God brought the promised King and preserved His purposes. Gen 37:9-10 Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers.… She was pregnant The woman represents Israel, from whom the Messiah would come according to God’s covenant promises. Her pregnancy portrays the long expectation of the promised Redeemer, the offspring who would defeat the serpent and bring salvation. Mat 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:… and crying out Israel’s history was marked by longing for deliverance amid oppression, exile, and spiritual decline. Her cry reflects the nation’s expectation that God would fulfill His promises through the coming Messiah. Isa 42:14 I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet… in the pain and agony of giving birth. The birth pains portray the suffering that accompanied Israel’s waiting and the conflict surrounding the arrival of Christ. They also anticipate the tribulation and turmoil connected with the establishment of God’s kingdom. Isa 26:17-18 As a woman with child about to give birth… Then another sign appeared in heaven: A second heavenly vision reveals the spiritual conflict behind events on earth. Rev 15:1 Then I saw another great and marvelous sign in heaven:… a huge red dragon The dragon represents Satan, the chief enemy of God and His people. Its red appearance reflects violence, bloodshed, and destructive power. Rev 20:2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent… with seven heads, The seven heads portray the breadth and completeness of Satan’s deceptive authority exercised through earthly rulers and kingdoms. Rev 13:1 Then I saw a beast with ten horns and seven heads… ten horns, The ten horns depict great political and military power, showing the dragon’s influence over a full array of hostile kingdoms. Dan 7:7 After this, as I watched in my vision in the night,… and seven royal crowns on his heads. The crowns present Satan as claiming dominion through earthly powers. His rule is real but limited, temporary, and opposed to God’s rightful authority. Rev 9:7 And the locusts looked like horses prepared for battle… His tail swept a third of the stars from the sky, hurling them to the earth. The dragon’s sweeping tail portrays Satan’s rebellion and the fall of angels who joined him. The stars represent angelic beings cast down from their heavenly position, revealing the extent of Satan’s influence and the reality of conflict between God’s kingdom and the forces of evil. Dan 8:10 It grew as high as the host of heaven,… And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, The dragon is Satan, and the woman represents Israel, the people through whom God brought the Messiah into the world. Satan’s position before her reflects his long opposition to God’s purposes and his efforts to prevent the promised Deliverer from coming. Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,… ready to devour her child as soon as she gave birth. The child is Jesus Christ, whose birth brought Satan’s opposition into open view. Herod’s attempt to kill the infant boys of Bethlehem was one early expression of this hostility. Satan sought to destroy Christ, but he could not overturn God’s plan or prevent the Messiah from accomplishing His work. Mat 2:16 When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi… And she gave birth to a son, a male child, The woman, representing Israel, brings forth the Messiah according to God’s redemptive plan. The male child is Jesus Christ, born into the world through Israel and destined to fulfill God’s promises. Luk 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn, a Son.… who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. Christ will exercise absolute and righteous authority over every nation. His rule will be firm, final, and resistant to all rebellion when He establishes His kingdom. Psa 2:9 You will break them with an iron scepter;… And her child was caught up to God and to His throne. After completing His earthly ministry, dying, and rising again, Jesus ascended to heaven and took His place at the Father’s throne. His exaltation confirms His authority and preserves Him from the dragon’s attempt to destroy Him before His appointed reign. Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up… And the woman fled into the wilderness, Israel will be driven to a wilderness refuge during the dragon’s persecution. As in the Exodus, the wilderness becomes a place of separation from danger and dependence upon God. Gen 16:6-7 “Here,” said Abram, “your servant is in your hands.… where God had prepared a place for her God has appointed a specific refuge for Israel before the time of persecution begins. Her escape is not accidental but part of His sovereign purpose and protection. Exo 23:20 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you… to be nourished God will sustain the woman throughout her exile, providing what is necessary for her survival during the tribulation. 1Ki 17:4-6 And you are to drink from the brook, and I have commanded… for 1,260 days. This period equals forty-two months, or three and a half years, the latter half of the tribulation. Though marked by severe persecution, it is limited by God and ends according to His appointed timetable. Rev 11:3 And I will empower my two witnesses, and they will…
The War in HeavenA real conflict took place in the heavenly realm as Satan’s rebellion met God’s appointed judgment. The battle reveals that evil has opposed God’s rule from the beginning but remains subject to His authority. Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,… Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, Michael, the chief angelic prince and defender of God’s people, led the holy angels against Satan. The dragon is Satan, the ancient enemy of God who seeks to destroy God’s purposes and accuse His people. Jud 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed… and the dragon and his angels fought back. Satan was not alone; fallen angels joined his rebellion. Their resistance was determined but doomed, for no created power can overcome God or withstand the forces He commands. Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,… But the dragon was not strong enough, Satan and the forces aligned with him could not overcome Michael and the holy angels. Their rebellion failed before God’s authority, confirming that no evil power can prevail in heaven. Luk 10:18 So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning… and no longer was any place found in heaven for him Satan was expelled from the heavenly realm and lost his former access to accuse God’s people before Him. Heaven was purged of the rebel and his claims against the faithful were silenced. Isa 14:12-15 How you have fallen from heaven, O day star… and his angels. The fallen angels who joined Satan in rebellion were cast out with him. Their removal marks the defeat of the entire demonic host and anticipates their final judgment. Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,… And the great dragon was hurled down— The great dragon is Satan, portrayed as the ancient enemy of God and His people. His expulsion marks a decisive defeat in the heavenly conflict and confirms that his power is subject to God’s rule. Luk 10:18 So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning… that ancient serpent The dragon is identified with the serpent who deceived Eve in Eden. From humanity’s fall onward, Satan has worked through deception to draw people into rebellion against God. Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field… called the devil and Satan, These names—devil, meaning “slanderer” or “accuser,” and Satan, meaning “adversary”—reveal his character and work as God’s adversary and the accuser of His people. He stands in opposition to God’s purposes and seeks to undermine faithfulness among mankind. Mat 4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.… the deceiver of the whole world. Satan’s influence extends among the nations, blinding unbelievers and promoting lies that turn people from God. His deception is widespread, though it remains limited by God’s authority. Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry… He was hurled to the earth, Cast out from heaven, Satan’s activity is concentrated on earth. The conflict now unfolds in the world as he opposes God’s people before his final judgment. Isa 14:12-15 How you have fallen from heaven, O day star… and his angels with him. The angels who rebelled with Satan share in his fall and serve his opposition to God. Their defeat is certain, and they will ultimately face the judgment prepared for them. Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,… And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: A heavenly proclamation announces the decisive significance of what has occurred in the conflict between God and Satan. Rev 19:1 After this I heard a sound like the roar… “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ. Satan’s expulsion confirms God’s victory and Christ’s rightful authority. God’s kingdom, long opposed by the powers of darkness, is openly established through the saving work and reign of Christ. Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord… For the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down— Satan, who opposed God’s people and sought their condemnation before God, has suffered a final and irreversible defeat. Luk 10:18 So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning… he who accuses them day and night before our God. His constant accusations could not stand against Christ’s sacrifice and intercession for believers. The heavenly declaration assures God’s people that their adversary has been cast down and his claims against them have been answered. Zec 3:1-2 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest… They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb Satan is defeated through Christ’s sacrificial death. The Lamb recalls the Passover sacrifice, through which God delivered Israel from judgment in Egypt. Jesus, sinless and appointed by God, shed His blood to redeem His people, cancel the guilt of sin, and secure their victory over the accuser. Rev 7:14 “Sir,” I answered, “you know.” So he replied:… and by the word of their testimony. Believers overcome by openly confessing their faith in Christ and bearing witness to His death and resurrection. Their testimony includes both their spoken confession and their steadfast obedience under opposition. The early church’s public witness spread despite threats, imprisonment, and persecution. Rev 20:4 Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them… And they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death. The faithful refuse to deny Christ even when their allegiance costs them their lives. Many believers in the first-century Roman world faced execution rather than worship Caesar or renounce the Lord. Their willingness to die rests on the certainty of Christ’s resurrection and the promise of eternal life. Jhn 12:25 Whoever loves his life will lose it, but whoever… Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Satan’s expulsion from heaven marks a decisive victory for God and His angels. Heaven rejoices because the accuser no longer has access to stand before God against His people. The triumph is real, though its effects on earth are yet to unfold. Rev 18:20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles… But woe to the earth and the sea; The devil’s removal from heaven brings intensified conflict to the world below. Earth and sea encompass the realm of human life and the nations, now facing the rage of a defeated enemy. Rev 8:8-9 Then the second angel sounded his trumpet,… with great fury the devil has come down to you, Cast down by Michael and his angels, Satan turns his hostility toward those on earth, especially those who belong to God. His fury arises from defeat, not strength; he cannot overturn God’s rule or escape the judgment appointed for him. Luk 10:18 So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning… knowing he has only a short time.” Satan acts with urgency because his opportunity to oppose God is limited. His final judgment is certain, and the period of suffering and persecution he causes will end when Christ establishes His victory openly. Rev 20:3 And he threw him into the Abyss, shut it, and sealed it…
The Woman PersecutedSatan, defeated and expelled from heaven, turns his wrath toward the earth. No longer able to accuse God’s people in heaven, he intensifies his opposition to God’s purposes in the world. Luk 10:18 So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning… he pursued the woman The woman represents Israel, through whom the Messiah came and with whom God maintains His covenant purposes. The dragon’s pursuit reflects Satan’s long hostility toward Israel and his efforts to destroy God’s people during the coming tribulation. Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,… who had given birth to the male child. The male child is Jesus Christ, born through Israel and destined to rule the nations. Satan’s attack recalls his earlier attempts to destroy the Messiah, including Herod’s slaughter of Bethlehem’s children, and continues in his persecution of the people connected with Christ’s earthly lineage. Isa 66:7 Before she was in labor, she gave birth;… But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle God provides Israel with swift and decisive deliverance, protecting her by His power rather than human strength. Exo 19:4 You have seen for yourselves what I did to Egypt,… to fly from the presence of the serpent Satan’s effort to destroy her is prevented as she is removed beyond his immediate reach. Gen 3:1-15 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field… to her place in the wilderness, Israel is brought to a divinely prepared refuge during the tribulation. Hos 2:14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her and lead her to the wilderness,… where she was nourished God sustains and preserves her through the period of persecution. Exo 16:4-15 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain down bread… for a time, and times, and half a time. This describes three and a half years, a limited period in which Satan’s hostility continues but remains under God’s control. Dan 7:25 He will speak out against the Most High and oppress… Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river Satan, the serpent, launches a powerful assault against the woman after she escapes into the wilderness. The river portrays an overwhelming attack intended to engulf her, whether through persecution, deception, military force, or other means under Satan’s influence. Isa 8:7-8 the Lord will surely bring against them the floodwaters… to overtake the woman The woman represents Israel, from whom the Messiah came and through whom God’s covenant purposes continue. Satan’s pursuit reflects his long hostility toward God’s people and his effort to prevent their preservation during the tribulation. Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,… and sweep her away in the torrent. The attack is meant to destroy the woman completely and end her place in God’s plan. Yet the following events show that God intervenes to protect her, preserving His people despite Satan’s determined opposition. Psa 124:4-5 then the floods would have engulfed us, then the torrent… But the earth helped the woman Israel, preserved by God during the dragon’s assault, receives unexpected protection through the created order. God’s control extends over every force in heaven and on earth, and the dragon cannot overcome those whom God has determined to preserve. Exo 15:12 You stretched out Your right hand, and the earth… and opened its mouth The earth acts as the means by which God stops the attack. The description presents a real, miraculous intervention comparable to earlier judgments in which God used the earth itself against His enemies. Deu 11:6 and what He did in the midst of all the Israelites… to swallow up the river The river represents the overwhelming assault Satan sends after the woman, whether through invading forces, persecution, deception, or other instruments of destruction. Rather than reaching its intended target, the attack is consumed and rendered ineffective. Isa 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD where the sun sets… that the dragon had poured from his mouth. The dragon, Satan, directs his rage against Israel because of her connection to the Messiah and the people who hold to His testimony. His effort fails because God limits his power and preserves the woman through the appointed time. Isa 51:9-10 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD.… And the dragon was enraged at the woman Satan’s rage against the woman continues the conflict begun after the birth and exaltation of the Messiah. The woman represents Israel, through whom the promised Christ came, and her preservation shows God’s continued purpose for His covenant people. Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,… and went to make war with the rest of her children, Unable to destroy the woman, the dragon turns against those who belong to Christ. These believers become the target of Satan’s persecution during the period of tribulation described in Revelation. Rev 13:7 Then the beast was permitted to wage war against the saints… who keep the commandments of God They are marked by obedience to God even under pressure to compromise, deny the truth, or submit to the worship demanded by the beast. 1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.… and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Their allegiance to Jesus Christ remains public and steadfast. They refuse to abandon their witness, though faithfulness may bring suffering and death. Rev 19:10 So I fell at his feet to worship him. But he told me… And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea. Satan takes his position as the coming beast rises from the sea, preparing to use earthly rulers and powers in his war against God’s people. Isa 27:1 In that day the LORD will take His sharp, great sword… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
