1Then the whole council rose and led Jesus away to Pilate.1Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον
2And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a King.”2ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Τοῦτον εὕραμεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος ἡμῶν καὶ κωλύοντα φόρους Καίσαρι διδόναι καὶ λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν Χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι
3So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.3 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν λέγων Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη Σὺ λέγεις
4Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”4 δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους Οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ
5But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people all over Judea with His teaching. He began in Galilee and has come all the way here.”5Οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι Ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν διδάσκων καθ’ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε
6When Pilate heard this, he asked if the man was a Galilean.6Πιλᾶτος δὲ ἀκούσας ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν
7And learning that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself was in Jerusalem at that time.7καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις
8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a miracle.8 δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν ἦν γὰρ ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον
9Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but He gave no answer.9ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ
10Meanwhile, the chief priests and scribes stood there, vehemently accusing Him.10Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ
11And even Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him. Dressing Him in a fine robe, they sent Him back to Pilate.11ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν ‹καὶ› Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας περιβαλὼν ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ
12That day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this time they had been enemies.12Ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι τε Ἡρῴδης καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετ’ ἀλλήλων προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς αὑτούς
13Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,13Πιλᾶτος δὲ συνκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν
14and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined Him here in your presence and found Him not guilty of your charges against Him.14εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας οὐθὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ’ αὐτοῦ
15Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.15ἀλλ’ οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης ἀνέπεμψεν γὰρ αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ
16Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”16παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω
1717⧼Ἀνάγκην δὲ εἴχεν ἀπολύειν αὐτοῖς κατὰ ἑορτὴν ἕνα⧽
18But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”18Ἀνέκραγον δὲ παμπληθεὶ* λέγοντες Αἶρε τοῦτον ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν τὸν Βαραββᾶν
19(Barabbas had been imprisoned for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)19ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,20Πάλιν δὲ Πιλᾶτος προσεφώνησεν αὐτοῖς θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν
21but they kept shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”21οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες Σταύρου σταύρου αὐτόν
22A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no offense worthy of death. So after I punish Him, I will release Him.”22 δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω
23But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices for Jesus to be crucified. And their clamor prevailed.23Οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν ⧼καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων⧽
24So Pilate sentenced that their demand be met.24καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν
25As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and handed Jesus over to their will.25ἀπέλυσεν δὲ τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς φυλακὴν ὃν ᾐτοῦντο τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν
26As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.26Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν ἐπιλαβόμενοι Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
27A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him.27Ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν
28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.28στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ μὴ κλαίετε ἐπ’ ἐμέ πλὴν ἐφ’ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν
29Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’29ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν Μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ἔθρεψαν
30At that time ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’30τότε Ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν Πέσετε* ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς Καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς Καλύψατε ἡμᾶς
31For if men do these things while the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”31Ὅτι εἰ ἐν ‹τῷ› ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται
32Two others, who were criminals, were also led away to be executed with Jesus.32Ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι κακοῦργοι δύο σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι
33When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on His right and the other on His left.33Καὶ ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν
34Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.34 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν Πάτερ ἄφες αὐτοῖς οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον κλήρους
35The people stood watching, and the rulers sneered at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”35Καὶ εἱστήκει λαὸς θεωρῶν ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες λέγοντες Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν σωσάτω ἑαυτόν εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν Χριστὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκλεκτός
36The soldiers also mocked Him and came up to offer Him sour wine.36Ἐνέπαιξαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ
37“If You are the King of the Jews,” they said, “save Yourself!”37καὶ λέγοντες Εἰ σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων σῶσον σεαυτόν
38Above Him was posted an inscription: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.38Ἦν δὲ καὶ ἐπιγραφὴ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ ΟΥΤΟΣ* {γράμμασιν Ἑλληνικοῖς καὶ Ρωμαϊκοῖς καὶ Ἑβραϊκοῖς}
39One of the criminals who hung there heaped abuse on Him. “Are You not the Christ?” he said. “Save Yourself and us!”39Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτόν ‹λέγων› Οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ Χριστός σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς
40But the other one rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment?40Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἕτερος ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη Οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν Θεόν ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ
41We are punished justly, for we are receiving what our actions deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”41καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν
42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”42καὶ ἔλεγεν Ἰησοῦ μνήσθητί μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν σου
43And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”43Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀμήν σοι λέγω σήμερον μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ Παραδείσῳ
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.44Καὶ ἦν ἤδη ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
45The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.45τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος ἐσχίσθη δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον
46Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.46Καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Πάτερ εἰς χεῖράς σου παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν
47When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.”47Ἰδὼν δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ἐδόξαζεν τὸν Θεὸν λέγων Ὄντως ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν
48And when all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts.48καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον
49But all those who knew Jesus, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things.49εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ συνακολουθοῦσαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα
50Now there was a Council member named Joseph, a good and righteous man,50Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι Ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων [καὶ] ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος
51who had not consented to their decision or action. He was from the Judean town of Arimathea, and was waiting for the kingdom of God.51οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συνκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὃς προσεδέχετο τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
52He went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.52οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ Πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
53Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid.53καὶ καθελὼν ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸν ἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν οὐδεὶς οὔπω κείμενος
54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was beginning.54καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν Παρασκευῆς καὶ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν
55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed.55Κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ αἱ γυναῖκες αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
56Then they returned to prepare spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.56ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα Καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν
