In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.1Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἐξῆλθεν δόγμα παρὰ Καίσαρος Αὐγούστου ἀπογράφεσθαι πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκουμένην
This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.2αὕτη ἀπογραφὴ πρώτη ἐγένετο ἡγεμονεύοντος τῆς Συρίας Κυρηνίου
And all went to be registered, each to his own town.3καὶ ἐπορεύοντο πάντες ἀπογράφεσθαι ἕκαστος εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ πόλιν
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,4Ἀνέβη δὲ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐκ πόλεως Ναζαρὲθ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν εἰς πόλιν Δαυὶδ ἥτις καλεῖται Βηθλεέμ διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐξ οἴκου καὶ πατριᾶς Δαυίδ
to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.5ἀπογράψασθαι σὺν Μαριὰμ τῇ ἐμνηστευμένῃ αὐτῷ οὔσῃ ἐγκύῳ
And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth.6Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.7καὶ ἔτεκεν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν πρωτότοκον καὶ ἐσπαργάνωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέκλινεν αὐτὸν ἐν φάτνῃ διότι οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς τόπος ἐν τῷ καταλύματι
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.8Καὶ ποιμένες ἦσαν ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ τῇ αὐτῇ ἀγραυλοῦντες καὶ φυλάσσοντες φυλακὰς τῆς νυκτὸς ἐπὶ τὴν ποίμνην αὐτῶν
And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.9καὶ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐπέστη αὐτοῖς καὶ δόξα Κυρίου περιέλαμψεν αὐτούς καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.10καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἄγγελος Μὴ φοβεῖσθε ἰδοὺ γὰρ εὐαγγελίζομαι ὑμῖν χαρὰν μεγάλην ἥτις ἔσται παντὶ τῷ λαῷ
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.11ὅτι ἐτέχθη ὑμῖν σήμερον Σωτήρ ὅς ἐστιν Χριστὸς Κύριος ἐν πόλει Δαυίδ
And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”12καὶ τοῦτο ὑμῖν ‹τὸ› σημεῖον εὑρήσετε βρέφος ἐσπαργανωμένον καὶ κείμενον ἐν φάτνῃ
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,13Καὶ ἐξαίφνης ἐγένετο σὺν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ πλῆθος στρατιᾶς οὐρανίου αἰνούντων τὸν Θεὸν καὶ λεγόντων
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”14Δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις Θεῷ καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς εἰρήνη ἐν ἀνθρώποις εὐδοκίας
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”15Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἀπῆλθον ἀπ’ αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν οἱ ἄγγελοι οἱ ποιμένες ἐλάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους Διέλθωμεν δὴ ἕως Βηθλεὲμ καὶ ἴδωμεν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο τὸ γεγονὸς Κύριος ἐγνώρισεν ἡμῖν
And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.16Καὶ ἦλθαν σπεύσαντες καὶ ἀνεῦραν τήν τε Μαριὰμ καὶ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ καὶ τὸ βρέφος κείμενον ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ
And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.17ἰδόντες δὲ ἐγνώρισαν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τοῦ λαληθέντος αὐτοῖς περὶ τοῦ παιδίου τούτου
And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.18καὶ πάντες οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν περὶ τῶν λαληθέντων ὑπὸ τῶν ποιμένων πρὸς αὐτούς
But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.19 δὲ Μαρία πάντα συνετήρει τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα συμβάλλουσα* ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῆς
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.20Καὶ ὑπέστρεψαν οἱ ποιμένες δοξάζοντες καὶ αἰνοῦντες τὸν Θεὸν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ἤκουσαν καὶ εἶδον καθὼς ἐλαλήθη πρὸς αὐτούς
And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.21Καὶ ὅτε ἐπλήσθησαν ἡμέραι ὀκτὼ τοῦ περιτεμεῖν αὐτόν καὶ ἐκλήθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦς τὸ κληθὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ ἀγγέλου πρὸ τοῦ συλλημφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ
And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord22Καὶ ὅτε ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸν νόμον Μωϋσέως ἀνήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παραστῆσαι τῷ Κυρίῳ
(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)23καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν νόμῳ Κυρίου ὅτι Πᾶν ἄρσεν διανοῖγον μήτραν ἅγιον τῷ Κυρίῳ κληθήσεται
and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”24καὶ τοῦ δοῦναι θυσίαν κατὰ τὸ εἰρημένον ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Κυρίου Ζεῦγος τρυγόνων δύο νοσσοὺς περιστερῶν
Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.25Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος ἦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ὄνομα Συμεών καὶ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος καὶ εὐλαβής προσδεχόμενος παράκλησιν τοῦ Ἰσραήλ καὶ Πνεῦμα ἦν Ἅγιον ἐπ’ αὐτόν
And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.26καὶ ἦν αὐτῷ κεχρηματισμένον ὑπὸ τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Ἁγίου μὴ ἰδεῖν θάνατον πρὶν ἂν ἴδῃ τὸν Χριστὸν Κυρίου
And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,27καὶ ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι εἰς τὸ ἱερόν καὶ ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τοὺς γονεῖς τὸ παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὸ εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περὶ αὐτοῦ
he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,28καὶ αὐτὸς ἐδέξατο αὐτὸ εἰς τὰς ἀγκάλας καὶ εὐλόγησεν τὸν Θεὸν καὶ εἶπεν
“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word;29Νῦν ἀπολύεις τὸν δοῦλόν σου Δέσποτα κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ
for my eyes have seen your salvation30ὅτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου τὸ σωτήριόν σου
that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,31 ἡτοίμασας κατὰ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν λαῶν
a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”32φῶς εἰς ἀποκάλυψιν ἐθνῶν καὶ δόξαν λαοῦ σου Ἰσραήλ
And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.33Καὶ ἦν πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ μήτηρ θαυμάζοντες ἐπὶ τοῖς λαλουμένοις περὶ αὐτοῦ
And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed34καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτοὺς Συμεὼν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Μαριὰμ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ Ἰδοὺ οὗτος κεῖται εἰς πτῶσιν καὶ ἀνάστασιν πολλῶν ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἰς σημεῖον ἀντιλεγόμενον
(and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”35καὶ σοῦ δὲ αὐτῆς τὴν ψυχὴν διελεύσεται ῥομφαία ὅπως ἂν ἀποκαλυφθῶσιν ἐκ πολλῶν καρδιῶν διαλογισμοί
And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,36Καὶ ἦν Ἅννα προφῆτις θυγάτηρ Φανουήλ ἐκ φυλῆς Ἀσήρ αὕτη προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ἡμέραις πολλαῖς ζήσασα μετὰ ἀνδρὸς ἔτη ἑπτὰ ἀπὸ τῆς παρθενίας αὐτῆς
and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.37καὶ αὐτὴ χήρα ἕως ἐτῶν ὀγδοήκοντα τεσσάρων οὐκ ἀφίστατο τοῦ ἱεροῦ νηστείαις καὶ δεήσεσιν λατρεύουσα νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν
And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.38καὶ αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐπιστᾶσα ἀνθωμολογεῖτο τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ πᾶσιν τοῖς προσδεχομένοις λύτρωσιν Ἰερουσαλήμ
And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.39Καὶ ὡς ἐτέλεσαν πάντα τὰ κατὰ τὸν νόμον Κυρίου ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν εἰς πόλιν ἑαυτῶν Ναζαρέθ
And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.40Τὸ δὲ παιδίον ηὔξανεν καὶ ἐκραταιοῦτο πληρούμενον σοφίᾳ καὶ χάρις Θεοῦ ἦν ἐπ’ αὐτό
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.41Καὶ ἐπορεύοντο οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ κατ’ ἔτος εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ τῇ ἑορτῇ τοῦ πάσχα
And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom.42Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἐτῶν δώδεκα ἀναβαινόντων αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸ ἔθος τῆς ἑορτῆς
And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it,43καὶ τελειωσάντων τὰς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ὑποστρέφειν αὐτοὺς ὑπέμεινεν Ἰησοῦς παῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ
but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances,44νομίσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδὸν καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς γνωστοῖς
and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.45καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀναζητοῦντες αὐτόν
After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.46Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ἡμέρας τρεῖς εὗρον αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καθεζόμενον ἐν μέσῳ τῶν διδασκάλων καὶ ἀκούοντα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπερωτῶντα αὐτούς
And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.47ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ συνέσει καὶ ταῖς ἀποκρίσεσιν αὐτοῦ
And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.”48Καὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐξεπλάγησαν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν μήτηρ αὐτοῦ Τέκνον τί ἐποίησας ἡμῖν οὕτως ἰδοὺ πατήρ σου κἀγὼ ὀδυνώμενοι ἐζητοῦμέν* σε
And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”49Καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Τί ὅτι ἐζητεῖτέ με οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι ἐν τοῖς τοῦ Πατρός μου δεῖ εἶναί με
And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.50καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐ συνῆκαν τὸ ῥῆμα ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς
And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.51Καὶ κατέβη μετ’ αὐτῶν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ναζαρὲθ καὶ ἦν ὑποτασσόμενος αὐτοῖς καὶ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ διετήρει πάντα τὰ ῥήματα ‹ταῦτα› ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῆς
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.52Καὶ Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτεν ἐν τῇ σοφίᾳ καὶ ἡλικίᾳ καὶ χάριτι παρὰ Θεῷ καὶ ἀνθρώποις
