Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near. 1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,
So the high priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the crowd.2and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
But Satan went into Judas called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve. 3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.
So he went off and discussed with the high priests and the Temple police how he could betray Jesus to them. 4And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.
They were delighted, and agreed to give him money. 5They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
Judas accepted their offer and began to look for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them when no crowd was present.6He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
Then the day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. 7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover meal."8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."
They asked him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"9"Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked.
He told them, "Just after you go into the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters 10He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,
and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks you, "Where is the room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?"' 11and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'
Then he will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished. Get things ready for us there." 12He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there."
So they went and found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.13They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table, along with his apostles. 14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
He told them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer, 15And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
because I tell all of you, I will never eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God."16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves, 17After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you.
because I tell you, from now on I will never drink the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."18For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
Then he took a loaf of bread, gave thanks, broke it in pieces, and handed it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Keep on doing this in memory of me."19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant sealed by my blood, which is being poured out for you. 20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Yet look! The hand of the man who is betraying me is with me on the table! 21But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.
The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been determined, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom he is betrayed!" 22The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!"
Then they began to discuss among themselves which one of them was going to do this.23They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
Now an argument sprang up among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.
But he told them, "The kings of the unbelievers lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. 25Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.
But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you should become like the youngest, and the one who leads should become like the one who serves. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.
Because who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? It is the one at the table, isn't it? But I'm among you as one who serves.27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
"You are the ones who have always stood by me in my trials. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials.
And I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred a kingdom on me, 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit down on thrones to govern the twelve tribes of Israel."30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
"Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat, 31"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.
but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail. When you have come back, you must strengthen your brothers."32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
Peter told him, "Lord, I am ready to go even to prison and to die with you!"33But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death."
But Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me."34Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me."
Then Jesus asked his disciples, "When I sent you out without a wallet, traveling bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They replied, "Nothing at all."35Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered.
Then he told them, "But now whoever has a wallet must take it along, and his traveling bag, too. And the one who has no sword must sell his coat and buy one. 36He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
Because I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: 'He was counted among the criminals.' Indeed, what is written about me must be fulfilled."37It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment."
So they said, "Lord, look! Here are two swords." He answered them, "Enough of that!" 38The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That's enough!" he replied.
Then he left and went to the Mount of Olives, as usual. The disciples went with him. 39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
When he arrived, he told them, "Keep on praying that you may not be tempted." 40On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."
Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 41He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."
Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like large drops of blood falling on the ground. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
When he got up from prayer, he went to the disciples and found them asleep from sorrow. 45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.
He asked them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and keep on praying that you may not be tempted."46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."
While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them, and he came close to Jesus to kiss him. 47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,
But Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"48but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
When those who were around Jesus saw what was about to take place, they asked, "Lord, should we attack with our swords?" 49When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?"
Then one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
But Jesus said, "No more of this!" So he touched the wounded man's ear and healed him.51But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
Then Jesus told the high priests, the Temple police, and the elders, who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit?52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?
While I was with you day after day in the Temple, you didn't lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, when darkness reigns!" 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns."
Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. 54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them. 55And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.
A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire, stared at him, and said, "This man was with him, too."56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."
But he denied it, "I don't know him, woman!" he responded.57But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.
A little later, a man looked at him and said, "You are one of them, too." But Peter said, "Mister, I am not!"58A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.
About an hour later, another man emphatically asserted, "This man was certainly with him, because he is a Galilean!"59About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."
But Peter said, "Mister, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.60Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.
Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered the word from the Lord, and how he had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." 61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."
So he went outside and cried bitterly.62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Then the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to make fun of him while they beat him. 63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.
They blindfolded him and asked him over and over again, "Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?" 64They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"
And they kept insulting him in many other ways.65And they said many other insulting things to him.
As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled and brought him before their Council.66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.
They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he told them, "If I tell you, you won't believe me, 67"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me,
and if I ask you a question, you won't answer me. 68and if I asked you, you would not answer.
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."
Then they all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He answered them, "You said it—I AM."70They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You say that I am."
"Why do we need any more testimony?" they asked. "We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!"71Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."
