King James BibleNew American Standard Bible 1995
After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.1Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him;
But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.2for they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people."
And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.3While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head.
And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?4But some were indignantly remarking to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted?
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.5"For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her.
And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.6But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me.
For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.7"For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.
She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.8"She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.9"Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."
And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.10Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.
And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.11They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.
And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?12On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?"
And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.13And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him;
And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"'
And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.15"And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there."
And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.16The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.17When it was evening He came with the twelve.
And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.18As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me-- one who is eating with Me."
And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?19They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, "Surely not I?"
And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.20And He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.
The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.21"For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."
And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.22While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body."
And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.23And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.24And He said to them, "This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.
Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.25"Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.26After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.27And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, because it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED.'
But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.28"But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."
But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.29But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away, yet I will not."
And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.30And Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you, that this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times."
But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.31But Peter kept saying insistently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all were saying the same thing also.
And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.32They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed."
And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;33And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled.
And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.34And He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch."
And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.35And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by.
And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.36And He was saying, "Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will."
And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?37And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.38"Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.39Again He went away and prayed, saying the same words.
And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.40And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.
And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.41And He came the third time, and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.42"Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!"
And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely.44Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away under guard."
And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, master; and kissed him.45After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, "Rabbi!" and kissed Him.
And they laid their hands on him, and took him.46They laid hands on Him and seized Him.
And one of them that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.47But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves to take me?48And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber?
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.49"Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures."
And they all forsook him, and fled.50And they all left Him and fled.
And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:51A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him.
And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.52But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.
And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.53They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together.
And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire.
And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.55Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.
For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.56For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent.
And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,57Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying,
We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.58"We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'"
But neither so did their witness agree together.59Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.
And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?60The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?"
But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?61But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"
And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.62And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?63Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, "What further need do we have of witnesses?
Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.64"You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.65Some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!" And the officers received Him with slaps in the face.
And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:66As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came,
And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene."
But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew.68But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he went out onto the porch, and a rooster crowed.
And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.69The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!"
And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean too."
But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.71But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about!"
And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And he began to weep.
