Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.
The chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find some way to execute Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. 2The chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people.
Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve.3And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve.
He went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he might betray Jesus, handing him over to them.4And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him to them.
They were delighted and arranged to give him money.5They were glad and agreed to give him money.
So Judas agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus when no crowd was present. 6So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them apart from the crowd.
Then the day for the feast of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.7Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat."8And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it."
They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"9They said to Him, "Where do You want us to prepare it?"
He said to them, "Listen, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters,10And He said to them, "When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.
and tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'11"And you shall say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"'
Then he will show you a large furnished room upstairs. Make preparations there."12"And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there."
So they went and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 13And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table and the apostles joined him.14When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.
And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.15And He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."16for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves.17And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves;
For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."18for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes."
Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."19And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 20And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
"But look, the hand of the one who betrays me is with me on the table.21"But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.
For the Son of Man is to go just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"22"For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!"
So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this. 23And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.
A dispute also started among them over which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.24And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest.
So Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called 'benefactors.'25And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.'
Not so with you; instead the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.26"But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.
For who is greater, the one who is seated at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 27"For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
"You are the ones who have remained with me in my trials.28"You are those who have stood by Me in My trials;
Thus I grant to you a kingdom, just as my Father granted to me,29and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 30that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
"Simon, Simon, pay attention! Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat,31"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat;
but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."32but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."
But Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"33But he said to Him, "Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!"
Jesus replied, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me." 34And He said, "I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me."
Then Jesus said to them, "When I sent you out with no money bag, or traveler's bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They replied, "Nothing."35And He said to them, "When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?" They said, "No, nothing."
He said to them, "But now, the one who has a money bag must take it, and likewise a traveler's bag too. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one.36And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.
For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was counted with the transgressors.' For what is written about me is being fulfilled."37"For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment."
So they said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." Then he told them, "It is enough." 38They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, "It is enough."
Then Jesus went out and made his way, as he customarily did, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.39And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.
When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."40When He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."
He went away from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,41And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray,
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."42saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done."
[Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.43Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
And in his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.]44And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.
When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted from grief.45When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,
So he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation!" 46and said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation."
While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared, and the man named Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He walked up to Jesus to kiss him.47While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him.
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we use our swords?"49When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
Then one of them struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his right ear.50And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus said, "Enough of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.51But Jesus answered and said, "Stop! No more of this." And He touched his ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come out to get him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs like you would against an outlaw?52Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber?
Day after day when I was with you in the temple courts, you did not arrest me. But this is your hour, and that of the power of darkness!" 53"While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours."
Then they arrested Jesus, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.54Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance.
When they had made a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.55After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them.
Then a slave girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man was with him too!"56And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, "This man was with Him too."
But Peter denied it: "Woman, I don't know him!"57But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."
Then a little later someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"58A little later, another saw him and said, "You are one of them too!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"
And after about an hour still another insisted, "Certainly this man was with him, because he too is a Galilean."59After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, "Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too."
But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.60But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times."
And he went outside and wept bitterly. 62And he went out and wept bitterly.
Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.63Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him,
They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"64and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?"
They also said many other things against him, reviling him. 65And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming.
When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. Then they led Jesus away to their council66When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying,
and said, "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,67"If You are the Christ, tell us." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe;
and if I ask you, you will not answer.68and if I ask a question, you will not answer.
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."69"But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD."
So they all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" He answered them, "You say that I am."70And they all said, "Are You the Son of God, then?" And He said to them, "Yes, I am."
Then they said, "Why do we need further testimony? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!" 71Then they said, "What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth."
