Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.
and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.2The chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find some way to execute Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.3Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve.
And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he might betray Jesus, handing him over to them.
They were delighted and agreed to give him money.5They were delighted and arranged to give him money.
He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.6So Judas agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus when no crowd was present.
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.7Then the day for the feast of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat."
"Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked.9They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"
He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,10He said to them, "Listen, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters,
and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'11and tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there."12Then he will show you a large furnished room upstairs. Make preparations there."
They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.13So they went and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.14Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table and the apostles joined him.
And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.15And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you.17Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves.
For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."18For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."19Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.20And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.21"But look, the hand of the one who betrays me is with me on the table.
The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!"22For the Son of Man is to go just as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"
They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.23So they began to question one another as to which of them it could possibly be who would do this.
A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.24A dispute also started among them over which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.25So Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them are called 'benefactors.'
But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.26Not so with you; instead the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.
For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.27For who is greater, the one who is seated at the table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
You are those who have stood by me in my trials.28"You are the ones who have remained with me in my trials.
And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,29Thus I grant to you a kingdom, just as my Father granted to me,
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.30that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
"Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.31"Simon, Simon, pay attention! Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat,
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."32but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death."33But Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"
Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me."34Jesus replied, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me."
Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered.35Then Jesus said to them, "When I sent you out with no money bag, or traveler's bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They replied, "Nothing."
He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.36He said to them, "But now, the one who has a money bag must take it, and likewise a traveler's bag too. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one.
It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment."37For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was counted with the transgressors.' For what is written about me is being fulfilled."
The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That's enough!" he replied.38So they said, "Look, Lord, here are two swords." Then he told them, "It is enough."
Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.39Then Jesus went out and made his way, as he customarily did, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."40When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation."
He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,41He went away from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."
An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.43[Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.44And in his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.]
When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.45When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted from grief.
"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."46So he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you will not fall into temptation!"
While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,47While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared, and the man named Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He walked up to Jesus to kiss him.
but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
When Jesus' followers saw what was going to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with our swords?"49When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we use our swords?"
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.50Then one of them struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his right ear.
But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.51But Jesus said, "Enough of this!" And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come out to get him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs like you would against an outlaw?
Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour--when darkness reigns."53Day after day when I was with you in the temple courts, you did not arrest me. But this is your hour, and that of the power of darkness!"
Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.54Then they arrested Jesus, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.
And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.55When they had made a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.
A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."56Then a slave girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, stared at him and said, "This man was with him too!"
But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.57But Peter denied it: "Woman, I don't know him!"
A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.58Then a little later someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"
About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."59And after about an hour still another insisted, "Certainly this man was with him, because he too is a Galilean."
Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" At that moment, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times."61Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."
And he went outside and wept bitterly.62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.63Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.
They blindfolded him and demanded, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"64They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"
And they said many other insulting things to him.65They also said many other things against him, reviling him.
At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.66When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. Then they led Jesus away to their council
"If you are the Messiah," they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me,67and said, "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,
and if I asked you, you would not answer.68and if I ask you, you will not answer.
But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."
They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You say that I am."70So they all said, "Are you the Son of God, then?" He answered them, "You say that I am."
Then they said, "Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips."71Then they said, "Why do we need further testimony? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!"
