Berean Study Bible The Coming JudgmentPeter addresses his readers with the affection of a spiritual shepherd concerned for believers facing false teaching and growing pressure from the surrounding world. 1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,… this is now my second letter to you. He identifies this as a continuation of his earlier instruction, showing his ongoing care for the churches and the consistency of apostolic teaching. 1Co 5:9 I wrote you in my letter not to associate… Both of them are reminders Peter writes not to introduce a new message but to reinforce truths they had already received concerning holy living, Christ’s return, and the judgment of God. 2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things… to stir you He seeks to awaken alertness and renewed attention, especially as deceptive teachers attempt to weaken confidence in the truth. 2Pe 1:13 I think it is right to refresh your memory… to wholesome thinking Believers need minds shaped by God’s revealed word, enabling them to recognize error, remain steadfast, and live in expectation of the Lord’s coming. 1Pe 1:13 Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded.… by recalling what was foretold by the holy prophets The Old Testament prophets proclaimed God’s purposes for Israel, the coming Messiah, judgment, and the future restoration of His people. Their writings called Israel to repentance and faithfulness to God’s covenant while pointing forward to the fulfillment of His promises. Act 3:18 But in this way God has fulfilled what He foretold… and commanded by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ spoke with divine authority as Lord and Savior. His teaching confirmed God’s revealed truth, fulfilled the Law and the Prophets, and established the standard of faith and obedience for His people. Mat 28:20 and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded… through your apostles. The apostles were appointed by Christ as eyewitnesses and authorized teachers of the gospel. Their instruction preserved the message of Christ for the church and joined the prophetic witness of the Old Testament to the completed revelation of God in Christ. Jud 1:17 But you, beloved, remember what was foretold… Most importantly, you must understand Peter introduces a truth requiring careful attention and spiritual discernment. 2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days… that in the last days The period before Christ’s return will include increasing resistance to God’s revealed truth. Act 2:17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit… scoffers will come, Such people openly reject and ridicule the promises of God, especially the certainty of Christ’s return and final judgment. Jud 1:18 In the last times there will be scoffers who will… scoffing Their contempt will be deliberate and persistent, reflecting the unbelief seen before earlier acts of divine judgment. Pro 9:7-8 He who corrects a mocker brings shame on himself;… and following their own evil desires. Their denial of God’s truth is joined to a life governed by sinful desires, since moral independence from God supports their rejection of His authority. Jud 1:16 These men are discontented grumblers… “Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. Scoffers mock the promised return of Jesus, treating the delay as proof that He will not come. Their challenge reflects the same unbelief seen before the flood, when people ignored God’s warning until judgment arrived. Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back… “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, Generations have died without seeing Christ’s return, and the passing of time becomes an excuse for doubt. Yet death does not cancel God’s promises or His appointed purposes. Act 13:36 For when David had served God’s purpose… everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.” The scoffers assume that history will continue unchanged and deny that God intervenes in the world. They overlook both creation and the flood, events that show God’s authority over nature and history and confirm that He will bring His purposes to completion. Ecc 1:4-11 Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains… But they deliberately overlook the fact Scoffers willingly ignore the historical testimony of creation and God’s past judgments. Their denial of Christ’s return rests on refusing what God has already done. Rom 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven… that long ago by God’s word God brought the world into being by His command, establishing His authority over all creation and history. Heb 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed… the heavens existed The skies and all that they contain were created according to God’s purpose, not by chance or independent natural processes. Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. and the earth was formed out of water and by water, At creation, the earth emerged from the waters as God separated and ordered them, symbolizing chaos, life, and purification. The waters that served in forming the world would later become instruments of judgment in the Flood. Gen 1:9-10 And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered… through which God used the waters He had established by His word as the means of judgment on the earth. Gen 7:11-12 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … the world of that time The pre-flood world had become marked by pervasive violence and corruption, and God brought an end to that generation while preserving Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. Gen 6:5-7 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man… perished The destruction was comprehensive for those outside the ark, showing the certainty and seriousness of divine judgment. Gen 7:21-23 And every living thing that moved upon the earth… in the flood. The flood ended the old order and began a renewed world under God’s covenant with Noah. Gen 6:17 And behold, I will bring floodwaters upon the earth… And by that same word, God’s unchanging decree that created the world and judged the pre-flood world now upholds creation and directs it toward its appointed end. Psa 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made… the present heavens and earth The present created order, though enduring since the flood, is not permanent. It will give way to the new heavens and new earth God has promised. Psa 102:25-26 In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth… are reserved for fire, Rather than another universal judgment by water, the world is being preserved for a final judgment marked by fire, bringing the present order to its end. Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”… being kept for the day of judgment God has fixed a day when Christ will judge all people in righteousness and reveal the full justice of His rule. Mat 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable… and destruction of ungodly men. Those who persist in rebellion against God will face final condemnation, not merely earthly loss but eternal separation from Him. 2Th 1:9 They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction,…
The Day of the LordPeter tenderly addresses believers facing scoffers who mocked the promise of Christ’s return. They were not to judge God’s faithfulness by the passing of human generations or by the apparent continuation of the present world. 1Co 10:1 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,… With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, God is eternal and is not limited by the measure of time that governs human life. What appears to men as a long delay does not diminish the certainty of His purposes or promises. Psa 90:4 For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day… and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord directs history according to His own perfect timetable. The promised return of Christ, the judgment of the ungodly, and the renewal of creation will occur exactly as God has appointed. Psa 90:2 Before the mountains were born or You brought forth… The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise Christ’s return will occur at the appointed time, though it may seem delayed to those who measure events by human expectations. Heb 10:37 “In just a little while, He who is coming will come…”… as some understand slowness, Scoffers treated the passing years as evidence that His coming would never happen. Mat 24:48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart… but is patient with you, The delay displays God’s mercy, giving people time to respond before judgment comes. Rom 2:4 Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness… not wanting anyone to perish God does not delight in the destruction of sinners but extends the offer of salvation. Mat 18:14 In the same way, your Father in heaven… but everyone to come to repentance. His patience calls all people to turn from sin and receive the salvation provided through Christ. Act 17:30 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times,… But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. Christ’s return will be sudden and unavoidable, arriving at a time unknown to the world. God’s final intervention will bring judgment upon the ungodly and complete salvation for His people. The certainty of that day calls believers to live faithfully while awaiting the Lord. 1Th 5:2 For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord… The heavens will disappear with a roar, The present heavens will pass away in a catastrophic act of divine judgment. The destruction of the old order will be unmistakable, marking the end of the fallen world as it now exists. Isa 51:6 But My salvation will last forever, and My righteousness…… the elements will be destroyed by fire, Fire will consume and purify the created order under God’s judgment. Nothing corrupted by sin, rebellion, or death will remain untouched as God prepares for the new heavens and new earth. Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”… and the earth and its works will be laid bare. The earth and everything done upon it will be exposed before God. Human achievements, hidden deeds, and every work will stand openly before His righteous judgment as the present creation gives way to the world in which righteousness dwells. Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;… Since everything will be destroyed in this way, Peter points to the coming destruction of the present heavens and earth by fire at the day of the Lord. As the flood judged the ancient world while preserving Noah and his family, this final judgment will remove all that is corrupted by sin and make way for the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. The certainty of God’s judgment reveals the temporary nature of the present order. Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words… what kind of people ought you to be? The coming judgment requires an honest examination of life and conduct. Those who belong to Christ are to live as people prepared for His return, not attached to a world that will pass away. 2Pe 1:5-7 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith… You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness Holiness marks a life set apart for God, while godliness is shown through reverence, obedience, and devotion to Him. Such conduct comes from a heart changed by God and reflects the character expected of those who await Christ’s return and the renewal of creation. 1Th 4:7-8 For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness.… as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, Believers are to await Christ’s return with active readiness, marked by holy conduct, prayer, and witness. God has appointed the day, yet His people participate in His purposes as the gospel advances and they live faithfully in expectation of His kingdom. Act 3:19-21 Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped… when the heavens will be destroyed by fire God will bring final judgment upon the present created order. The fire portrays a real and total cleansing that ends the world’s present condition under sin and prepares creation for renewal. Isa 34:4 All the stars of heaven will be dissolved.… and the elements will melt in the heat. The physical universe will undergo complete transformation under God’s judgment. Nothing corrupted by sin will remain, and the destruction of the old order will give way to the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. Amo 9:5 The Lord GOD of Hosts, He who touches the earth and it melts… But in keeping with God’s promise, God will fulfill what He has declared through the prophets: the present order, marked by sin, death, and corruption, will not endure forever. His purposes for creation and His people remain certain. Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God,… we are looking forward Believers wait with confident expectation, trusting God’s word despite present suffering, opposition, and the passing nature of the world. Php 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await… to a new heaven and a new earth, God will create a renewed order after the final judgment, replacing the fallen creation with one fully suited for His eternal reign and the dwelling of His redeemed people. Rev 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,… where righteousness dwells. Sin, injustice, rebellion, and death will be removed. God’s righteous rule will be complete, and His people will live in lasting holiness, peace, and fellowship with Him. Psa 37:29 The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.
Final ExhortationsPeter addresses fellow believers with pastoral affection as he turns from the certainty of God’s coming judgment to the conduct expected of those awaiting Christ. 1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.… as you anticipate these things, Believers look ahead to the Day of the Lord, the cleansing of the present creation, and the promised new heavens and new earth. Such expectation calls for steady readiness rather than speculation or fear. Heb 9:28 so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins… make every effort Christian growth requires deliberate obedience, perseverance, and attention to the life God has called His people to live. 2Pe 1:10 Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure.… to be found at peace— Peace includes reconciliation with God through Christ and faithful harmony with others. It describes a settled readiness to stand before the Lord. Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness,… spotless and blameless Peter calls believers to moral purity and lives free from conduct that brings justified accusation. The language reflects the unblemished sacrifice and points to a people being prepared for Christ. Eph 5:27 and to present her to Himself as a glorious church,… in His sight. God’s judgment is final and complete. What matters is not human approval but how believers are found in His sight when Christ returns. Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;… Consider also that our Lord’s patience brings salvation, The delay of Christ’s return is not indifference but mercy. God allows time for repentance, just as He patiently delayed judgment in the days before the flood. His restraint reveals His character: slow to anger and unwilling that people perish. 1Ti 1:16 But for this very reason I was shown mercy… just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote you Peter joins Paul in the same apostolic witness and refers to him with evident affection and respect. Though they had differed publicly at an earlier time, they remained united in the truth of the gospel. Paul’s letters were already known among the churches addressed by Peter. 2Th 3:17 This greeting is in my own hand—Paul. This is my mark… with the wisdom God gave him. Paul’s teaching came through wisdom granted by God, not merely from human insight. Peter affirms the divine source of Paul’s instruction, including his teaching on salvation, faith, and the place of believers in Christ. 1Co 2:13 And this is what we speak, not in words… He writes this way in all his letters, speaking in them about such matters. Peter confirms that Paul consistently taught about the Lord’s patience, the certainty of His return, and the call to holy living. Paul’s letters circulated among the churches and addressed central truths of the gospel, including salvation by grace, life in Christ, and the future judgment of God. 2Th 2:15 Therefore, brothers, stand firm and cling to the traditions… Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, Paul’s teaching often dealt with profound truths concerning God’s purposes, human sin, grace, Israel, the church, and the coming day of the Lord. Difficulty in understanding did not make his teaching unclear or unreliable, but required careful reading and submission to the whole counsel of God. Heb 5:11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain… which ignorant and unstable people distort, Those without sound instruction or settled faith misused Paul’s words to support error and excuse sin. Rather than receiving apostolic teaching as God’s truth, they twisted it to fit their own desires and led others away from the faith. 1Ti 1:7 They want to be teachers of the law, but… as they do the rest of the Scriptures, Peter places Paul’s letters alongside the sacred writings already recognized as Scripture. Paul’s apostolic teaching carried divine authority and was to be received as part of God’s revealed Word. 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction,… to their own destruction. Deliberately corrupting God’s Word brings judgment rather than freedom. The danger lay not in Scripture itself, but in rejecting its true meaning and using it to oppose the truth God had revealed. 2Th 1:8-9 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance… Therefore, beloved, Peter addresses his readers with the warmth of a spiritual father, joining his warning to the assurance that Christ will return and judge all wickedness. 1Pe 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial… since you already know these things, Since they had already received sufficient apostolic instruction concerning the Lord’s coming, the certainty of judgment, and the danger of false teachers, they were responsible to remain steadfast in the truth. 2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things… be on your guard They must remain alert rather than assume that prior knowledge makes them immune to deception. Mrk 13:33 Be on your guard and stay alert! For you do not know… so that you will not be carried away by the error of the lawless False teachers reject God’s authority and use distorted teaching to excuse sinful conduct, drawing unstable believers away from the truth. Eph 4:14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves… and fall from your secure standing. Their present stability rests in holding firmly to the apostolic gospel; abandoning it would mean departing from the position of faith they possess. 1Co 10:12 So the one who thinks he is standing firm…… But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Peter closes by directing believers toward continual spiritual maturity. Growth comes through God’s sustaining grace and through an increasingly personal, obedient knowledge of Jesus Christ. Christ is both Lord, possessing rightful authority over His people, and Savior, who redeemed them from sin. Faithful Christian living requires dependence on His grace while learning to know and follow Him more fully. 2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge… To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. All honor belongs to Jesus Christ in the present age and throughout eternity. His glory will remain undiminished when He returns, judges the world, and establishes His everlasting kingdom. Jud 1:25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion… Amen. This concluding affirmation, “Amen,” meaning “truly” or “so be it,” expresses confidence in the truth of Peter’s words and joins the praise offered to Christ. Php 4:20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
