Berean Study Bible Warnings against FoolishnessA father addresses his son with the authority and concern of one responsible for shaping his character and judgment. Wisdom was commonly taught within the household and passed from one generation to the next. Pro 2:1 My son, if you accept my words and hide my commandments… if you have put up security for your neighbor, Putting up security for another person’s debt placed one’s own property and livelihood at risk. If the borrower failed to pay, the guarantor bore the obligation. Pro 17:18 A man lacking judgment strikes hands in pledge… if you have struck hands in pledge with a stranger, A clasp of hands publicly confirmed a binding agreement. Entering such a pledge with someone outside one’s trusted circle could expose a man to serious loss through obligations he could not control. Pro 11:15 He who puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer,… if you have been trapped by the words of your lips, A rash promise, oath, or pledge could bind a person to obligations he had not fully considered. In Israel’s society, spoken commitments carried legal and moral weight, and careless speech could endanger a man’s property, reputation, or peace with others. Pro 12:13 An evil man is trapped by his rebellious speech… ensnared by the words of your mouth, What was spoken could become a snare when a person guaranteed another’s debt or made commitments beyond his ability to fulfill. The warning addresses the seriousness of honest speech and the consequences of entering binding agreements without wisdom. Mat 12:37 For by your words you will be acquitted,… then do this, my son, to free yourself, Wisdom urges immediate action when a person has bound himself through an unwise pledge. Such obligations could place him under another’s authority and threaten his household, property, or liberty. Pro 22:26-27 Do not be one who gives pledges, who puts up… for you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands: By guaranteeing another’s debt, he has made himself answerable to the creditor. His neighbor now holds a legitimate claim against him, making delay dangerous. Pro 17:18 A man lacking judgment strikes hands in pledge… Go, humble yourself, He must set aside pride and acknowledge the seriousness of his situation. Prompt humility may prevent the loss and conflict that follow unpaid obligations. Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you. and press your plea with your neighbor. He is to pursue release earnestly, seeking an agreement before the obligation brings greater harm. Pro 25:8-10 Do not bring hastily to court. Otherwise… Allow no sleep to your eyes Solomon urges immediate action when someone has become bound by an unwise pledge or financial guarantee. Delay could deepen the obligation and place the person and his household at greater risk. The warning condemns careless commitments, not faithful responsibility, and calls for prompt efforts to be released from a harmful agreement. Psa 77:4 You have kept my eyes from closing; I am too troubled… or slumber to your eyelids. The doubled wording heightens the urgency. Rest must not take priority over resolving a danger created by rash words or misplaced trust. Psa 132:4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, Free yourself, Escape the obligation without delay. Solomon warns against remaining bound by a reckless pledge that places one person’s livelihood under another’s control. The one who made the commitment must act humbly and urgently to seek release. Gen 19:17 As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said,… like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, A gazelle survives by fleeing swiftly when danger is near. The image stresses that delay can turn a difficult obligation into ruin. 2Sa 2:18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai… like a bird from the snare of the fowler. A bird caught in a trap cannot free itself by ignoring the danger. So a person entangled by unwise commitments must take prompt, deliberate action before the consequences tighten. Psa 91:3 Surely He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler.… Walk in the manner of the ant, O slacker; Ants provide a visible example of steady labor and prudent preparation. Though small and unnoticed, they gather what is needed before scarcity comes. Scripture contrasts such diligence with the ruin that follows idleness. Pro 30:24-25 Four things on earth are small, yet they are… observe its ways and become wise. Wisdom learns from God’s created order. The ant works faithfully without constant oversight and prepares for seasons ahead. Its example calls for responsible effort, foresight, and readiness rather than delay. Job 12:7-10 But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;… Without a commander, Ants labor without a commander, overseer, or ruler directing them. Their work is orderly and purposeful, demonstrating diligence and initiative without constant instruction. 2Th 3:10-12 For even while we were with you, we gave you this command:… without an overseer It gathers and prepares according to the seasons without an overseer to enforce its labor. This example exposes the sluggard’s dependence on repeated warnings and external pressure. Eph 6:6-7 And do this not only to please them while they are watching,… or ruler, It fulfills its necessary work through the wisdom God has placed within creation. The phrase “without having any chief, officer, or ruler” highlights the ant’s industry as an illustration of personal responsibility and foresight. Jdg 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel;… it prepares its provisions in summer; During the season of abundance, the ant stores what will be needed when food is scarce. Its conduct displays prudent foresight and responsible use of present opportunities. Like Joseph’s administration of Egypt’s grain during years of plenty, such preparation recognizes that favorable conditions do not last indefinitely. Pro 30:25 The ants are creatures of little strength,… it gathers its food at harvest. Harvest required prompt labor in Israel, since neglected crops could be lost to weather, animals, or spoilage. The ant takes advantage of the proper season rather than delaying until need becomes urgent. Its diligence stands in direct contrast to the sluggard, whose inactivity brings want. Pro 20:4 The slacker does not plow in season; at harvest time… How long will you lie there, O slacker? Proverbs repeatedly warns against the ruin brought by habitual laziness. The “slacker” is one who is habitually lazy or avoids work. In an agrarian society, neglected labor endangered a household’s food, income, and future. The question exposes the folly of remaining inactive when duties require attention. Pro 26:14 As a door turns on its hinges, so the slacker turns… When will you get up from your sleep? Sleep is proper and necessary, but excessive rest becomes an excuse for avoiding responsibility. The slacker’s delay is portrayed as a pattern that leaves work undone and invites poverty. The warning calls for timely action rather than complacency. Rom 13:11 And do this, understanding the occasion. The hour has come… A little sleep, Rest is necessary, but the sluggard repeatedly takes more than is needed, allowing small indulgences to replace work and responsibility. Pro 24:33-34 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding… a little slumber, The repeated delay becomes a pattern of idleness, leaving duties unfinished and needs unmet. Pro 23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, … a little folding of the hands to rest, In an agrarian society, neglected labor could quickly bring loss to a household. Folding the hands pictures a willing withdrawal from work, warning that comfort sought at the expense of duty leads to ruin. Ecc 4:5 The fool folds his hands and consumes his own flesh. and poverty will come upon you like a robber, Neglect of work leaves a household exposed to loss. In Israel’s agrarian life, failing to plant, tend fields, store provisions, or care for livestock could quickly bring hardship. Poverty may seem sudden when its causes have been accumulating through repeated idleness. Pro 24:34 and poverty will come upon you like a robber,… and need like a bandit. Need can then overtake a person with the force of an attack, stripping away security and leaving little ability to recover. Wisdom calls for steady labor and responsible care before such ruin arrives. Pro 19:15 Laziness brings on deep sleep, and an idle soul… A worthless person, “A worthless person” describes one who has cast off moral restraint and lives in rebellion against God’s order. Such a person is not merely weak or flawed but deliberately corrupt in character and conduct. 1Sa 25:25 My lord should pay no attention to this scoundrel Nabal… a wicked man, A wicked man pursues evil and injustice, placing personal gain, pride, or malice above what is right. Proverbs repeatedly contrasts his path with the life of the righteous and warns that wickedness leads to ruin. Pro 15:29 The LORD is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer… walks with a perverse mouth, The phrase “walks with a perverse mouth” describes a person whose corrupt heart is revealed through deceptive, manipulative, and destructive speech. His words spread falsehood, stir conflict, and lead others away from truth. Pro 4:24 Put away deception from your mouth; keep your lips… winking his eyes, He uses subtle signals to conceal his intentions and draw others into wrongdoing. Such gestures reveal a heart practiced in deception. Pro 16:30 He who winks his eye devises perversity;… speaking with his feet, His movements and conduct communicate what he will not say openly. Even his manner of walking serves his dishonest designs. Ezk 25:6 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you clapped… and pointing with his fingers. He gives covert directions and signals to advance mischief, manipulating others while avoiding plain and truthful speech. Isa 58:9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;… With deceit in his heart Deceit begins in the inner person, where thoughts, motives, and intentions are formed. The heart that should direct a man toward truth instead becomes committed to concealment and manipulation. Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.… he devises evil; His wrongdoing is deliberate rather than accidental. He considers how to carry out harmful plans, allowing corrupt intentions to become purposeful actions. Pro 3:29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor,… he continually sows discord. He repeatedly creates suspicion, conflict, and division among others. Like seed scattered in a field, his words and schemes produce strife that spreads through families and communities. Pro 16:28 A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip… Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; The wicked man’s repeated deceit, violence, and rebellion against God bring judgment upon him. Though he may appear secure for a time, his ruin arrives when he does not expect it, as God holds persistent sin accountable. 1Th 5:3 While people are saying, “Peace and security,”… in an instant he will be shattered beyond recovery. The judgment is complete and irreversible. Like a vessel broken beyond repair, the sinner’s downfall ends his former strength, plans, and security, showing the final consequence of refusing wisdom and correction. Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof… There are six things that the LORD hates, God openly condemns conduct that violates His righteous character and harms the order He established for human life. The numerical pattern prepares for a complete list of serious sins. Job 5:19 He will rescue you from six calamities; no harm… seven that are detestable to Him: The seventh item completes the list, stressing the fullness of God’s rejection of these attitudes and actions. They are not minor faults but offenses that oppose truth, justice, and peace among people. Pro 11:1 Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD,… haughty eyes, Pride exalts self above God and others, inviting the judgment that follows human arrogance. Psa 18:27 For You save an afflicted people, but You humble… a lying tongue, Falsehood corrupts justice, destroys trust, and opposes the God of truth. Psa 120:2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips… hands that shed innocent blood, Murder violates the sanctity of life established by God and recalls Cain’s murder of Abel. Israel’s law treated bloodshed as a defilement of the land and required justice for the victim. These sins reveal a heart set against God’s righteous order. 2Ki 24:4 and also for the innocent blood he had shed.… a heart that devises wicked schemes, The heart is the seat of a person’s thoughts, desires, and decisions. Wickedness begins inwardly before it appears in conduct, revealing deliberate resistance to God’s moral order. Such planning reflects humanity’s fallen condition and the need for a heart cleansed and directed by God. Pro 12:20 Deceit is in the hearts of those who devise evil,… feet that run swiftly to evil, Evil conceived in the heart soon becomes action. The image portrays willing and eager participation in wrongdoing rather than a momentary stumble. A person’s path is shown by the choices he pursues, whether toward sin or toward the righteous way God commands. Pro 1:16 For their feet run to evil, and they are swift… a false witness who gives false testimony, False testimony perverts justice and violates God’s command against bearing witness against one’s neighbor. In Israel’s courts, witness accounts could determine guilt, punishment, and the protection of the innocent; a lie could therefore destroy a person’s life and allow the guilty to escape judgment. Such deceit opposes the God of truth and reflects the work of the father of lies. Pro 12:17 He who speaks the truth declares what is right… and one who stirs up discord among brothers. God also condemns those who deliberately create suspicion, quarrels, and division within families and among His people. Unity is damaged when a person spreads rumors, inflames grievances, or pits one person against another. Christ reconciles His people to God and to one another, while those who sow discord work against the peace and fellowship God intends. Pro 16:28 A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip…

Pro 3:1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart… and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. A mother’s instruction carries the same enduring value. Both parents share in forming the character of their children, and their godly counsel is not to be abandoned. Pro 1:9 For they are a garland of grace on your head… Bind them always upon your heart; God’s instruction is to be received inwardly, shaping the mind, desires, and choices rather than remaining a matter of outward compliance. Parental teaching grounded in the fear of the Lord is to become a settled part of one’s character. Deu 6:6 These words I am commanding you today are to be… tie them around your neck. The same instruction is to be evident in daily life. Like an ornament worn where it can be readily seen, God’s wisdom should remain constantly before the believer and direct conduct in public as well as private life. Pro 3:3 Never let loving devotion or faithfulness leave you;… When you walk, they will guide you; God’s instruction directs the believer through the ordinary decisions, duties, and dangers of daily life. Wisdom is not limited to worship or crisis but provides a reliable path for conduct in the home, community, and work. Psa 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;… when you lie down, they will watch over you; At night, when a person is most vulnerable, the Lord’s commands preserve the conscience and bring security. Their protection includes freedom from the destructive consequences of sin and confidence in God’s faithful care. Psa 121:3-4 He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector… when you awake, they will speak to you. Awakening signifies a new beginning, a fresh start each day. Each new day begins under the continuing influence of God’s truth. What has been received and kept in the heart becomes a ready counselor, directing thoughts and actions from morning onward. Isa 50:4 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship,… For this commandment is a lamp, God’s command gives clear direction in a world darkened by sin and deception. Like a lamp carried at night, it reveals dangers that would otherwise remain hidden and guides the faithful in daily decisions. Psa 19:8 The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy… this teaching is a light, God’s instruction illumines the path of righteousness, exposing what is evil and showing what pleases Him. Its light brings understanding, purity, and stability to those who receive it. Those who accept godly discipline are preserved from sin’s consequences and led in the path that leads to life. Pro 10:17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,… to keep you from the evil woman, Wisdom and parental instruction guard a man from the immoral woman who seeks to draw him into sin and destroy his household. Her path opposes God’s design for marriage, faithfulness, and purity. Pro 22:14 The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit;… from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. Her flattering words conceal the ruin that adultery brings: broken covenant vows, guilt, judgment, and lasting consequences. Pro 2:16-19 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman… Do not lust in your heart for her beauty Adultery begins with desires welcomed inwardly before they become outward acts. The heart governs thought, desire, and will, so it must be guarded against coveting another person. Physical beauty can become a snare when it is allowed to rule judgment and weaken self-control. Mat 5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman… or let her captivate you with her eyes. Seductive looks and outward charm can draw a man toward unfaithfulness and ruin. The warning is not against noticing beauty, but against yielding to temptation and being led by fleeting attraction rather than wisdom, purity, and faithfulness. Isa 3:16 The LORD also says: “Because the daughters of Zion… For the levy of the prostitute is poverty, Sexual sin drains a man’s resources and can reduce him to want. In Israel, wealth and household stability were easily destroyed by reckless living, while the pursuit of illicit pleasure brought shame, loss, and dependence. Pro 29:3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,… and the adulteress preys upon your very life. Adultery endangers more than property. Under the Law, adultery was a serious offense carrying severe judgment, and an adulterous relationship could bring ruin, betrayal, violence, and death. Such sin places a man’s life and standing before God in peril. Pro 2:18-19 For her house sinks down to death, and her tracks… Can a man embrace fire Adultery promises pleasure but brings harm that cannot be contained. As fire burns the one who holds it, sexual sin wounds the sinner and disrupts the marriages, families, and community affected by it. Job 31:12 For it is a fire that burns down to Abaddon;… and his clothes not be burned? No one can deliberately handle fire without damage. In the same way, a man who pursues another man’s wife cannot expect to escape the consequences of his actions, including shame, broken trust, and God’s judgment. Dan 3:27 and when the satraps, prefects, governors,… Can a man walk on hot coals Hot coals picture a danger whose harm is immediate and unavoidable. Solomon continues his warning that adultery is not a private act without cost; it brings real injury to those involved and often to their households. Pro 25:22 For in so doing, you will heap burning coals… without scorching his feet? The answer is plainly no. As burning coals wound anyone who steps on them, sexual immorality carries consequences that secrecy and self-confidence cannot prevent. Dan 3:27 and when the satraps, prefects, governors,… So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; Adultery violates the covenant of marriage and brings guilt before God. Israel’s law condemned it as a serious offense because it corrupted the family and defied God’s design for marital faithfulness. David’s sin with Bathsheba shows how such wrongdoing can bring lasting harm to households and communities. Exo 20:14 You shall not commit adultery. no one who touches her will go unpunished. Sexual sin may be concealed for a time, but God’s judgment is certain. Adultery carries consequences that reach beyond the immediate act, damaging trust, families, and those drawn into its effects. Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife… Men do not despise the thief A man driven by need may receive pity, though his theft remains wrong and requires repayment. Jas 2:5-6 Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor… if he steals to satisfy his hunger. Hunger was a real danger in Israel’s agrarian life, and people understood the desperation it could cause. The proverb distinguishes such wrongdoing from adultery, which is a deliberate betrayal of marriage and brings deeper dishonor. Pro 30:8-9 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.… Yet if caught, Theft may be driven by hunger, but necessity does not remove guilt. Once discovered, the offender remains responsible for what he has taken. Num 32:23 But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin… he must pay sevenfold; The repayment is portrayed as severe and complete, exceeding the value of the stolen goods. The penalty underscores the public shame and financial cost of dishonesty. Psa 79:12 Pay back into the laps of our neighbors sevenfold… he must give up all the wealth of his house. A thief may lose everything to satisfy the required restitution. Even understandable need cannot justify taking what belongs to another. Job 20:28-29 The possessions of his house will be removed… He who commits adultery lacks judgment; Adultery violates God’s command and betrays the covenant of marriage. Though it may promise secrecy or pleasure, it reveals a refusal to consider its lasting harm to spouses, families, and one’s standing before God. Hos 4:11 promiscuity, wine, and new wine, which… whoever does so destroys himself. Sexual sin brings ruin beyond its outward consequences. It damages character, breaks trust, invites judgment, and places the sinner in rebellion against God. Pro 7:22-23 He follows her on impulse, like an ox going to the slaughter… Wounds and dishonor will befall him, Adultery brought serious consequences in Israel, often including retaliation from an offended husband, public shame, and lasting damage to one’s household. It violated God’s command and betrayed the marriage covenant, bringing harm not only to the guilty person but also to spouses, children, and the wider community. Pro 5:9-11 lest you concede your vigor to others,… and his reproach will never be wiped away. Though God forgives the repentant sinner, adultery can leave enduring earthly consequences. A ruined reputation, broken trust, and the memory of betrayal may remain long after the act itself, marking the seriousness of unfaithfulness. Jer 23:40 And I will bring upon you everlasting shame… For jealousy enrages a husband, Adultery violates the covenant of marriage and provokes righteous anger in the betrayed husband. In Israel’s ordered society, such betrayal brought personal shame, damaged households, and threatened the stability of the family. Num 5:14-31 and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband… and he will show no mercy The offender cannot assume that gifts, apologies, or negotiation will remove the husband’s anger. The injury is not treated as a private mistake but as a serious offense against a marriage covenant. Jer 13:14 I will smash them against one another, fathers and sons… in the day of vengeance. When the betrayed husband acts to defend his honor and seek justice, the consequences of adultery become unavoidable. The warning stresses that sexual sin brings real and lasting ruin. Isa 61:2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor… He will not be appeased by any ransom, A husband betrayed by adultery may be consumed with jealousy and anger, refusing any ransom—a payment for redemption or release—offered to offset the offense. In Israel, adultery violated the marriage covenant and brought shame upon both households. Money could not erase the betrayal or restore the broken trust. Num 35:31-32 You are not to accept a ransom for the life of a murderer… or persuaded by lavish gifts. Expensive gifts or generous compensation could not satisfy the wronged husband’s sense of justice. Outward attempts to cover the damage were powerless where there was no true restoration. The warning exposes adultery as a destructive sin whose consequences cannot be repaired by wealth or empty gestures. Exo 23:8 Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
