Manna and Quail from Heaven

1 וַיִּסְעוּ֙ (And they journeyed) מֵֽאֵילִ֔ם (from Elim), וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (and they came) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֤ת (the congregation) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) מִדְבַּר־ (the Wilderness) סִ֔ין (of Sin), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) בֵּין־ (between) אֵילִ֖ם (Elim) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) סִינָ֑י (Sinai), בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֨ה (on the five) עָשָׂ֥ר (and tenth) יוֹם֙ (day) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הַשֵּׁנִ֔י (the second) לְצֵאתָ֖ם (after they had departed) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 2 וַיִּלִּינוּ (And grumbled) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֧ת (congregation) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) עַל־ (against) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) וְעַֽל־ (and against) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness). 3 וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ (And said) אֲלֵהֶ֜ם (to them) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), מִֽי־ (Would) יִתֵּ֨ן (that) מוּתֵ֤נוּ (we had died) בְיַד־ (by the hand) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), בְּשִׁבְתֵּ֙נוּ֙ (when we sat) עַל־ (by) סִ֣יר (pots) הַבָּשָׂ֔ר (of the flesh), בְּאָכְלֵ֥נוּ (when we ate) לֶ֖חֶם (bread) לָשֹׂ֑בַע (to the full). כִּֽי־ (For) הוֹצֵאתֶ֤ם (you⁺ have brought out) אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ (us) אֶל־ (into) הַמִּדְבָּ֣ר (wilderness) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) לְהָמִ֛ית (to kill) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (the whole) הַקָּהָ֥ל (assembly) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) בָּרָעָֽב׃ס (with hunger).

4 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), הִנְנִ֨י (Behold), מַמְטִ֥יר (I am raining down) לָכֶ֛ם (for you⁺) לֶ֖חֶם (bread) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens), וְיָצָ֨א (and shall go out) הָעָ֤ם (the people) וְלָֽקְטוּ֙ (and gather) דְּבַר־ (the portion) י֣וֹם (of a day) בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ (in its day), לְמַ֧עַן (so that) אֲנַסֶּ֛נּוּ (I may test them) הֲיֵלֵ֥ךְ (whether they will walk) בְּתוֹרָתִ֖י (in My law) אִם־ (or) לֹֽא׃ (not). 5 וְהָיָה֙ (And it shall be) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י (the sixth) וְהֵכִ֖ינוּ (that they shall prepare) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) יָבִ֑יאוּ (they bring in), וְהָיָ֣ה (and it shall be) מִשְׁנֶ֔ה (double) עַ֥ל (over) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (what) יִלְקְט֖וּ (they gather) י֥וֹם׀ (day) יֽוֹם׃ס (by day).

6 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן (and Aaron) אֶֽל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֖י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), עֶ֕רֶב (At evening) וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם (and you⁺ shall know) כִּ֧י (that) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) הוֹצִ֥יא (has brought out) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt); 7 וּבֹ֗קֶר (and in the morning) וּרְאִיתֶם֙ (you⁺ shall see) אֶת־ (-) כְּב֣וֹד (the glory) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), בְּשָׁמְע֥וֹ (in His hearing) אֶת־ (-) תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ complaints) עַל־ (against) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH). וְנַ֣חְנוּ (And we) מָ֔ה (are what) כִּ֥י (that) תַלּוֹנוּ (you⁺ grumble) עָלֵֽינוּ׃ (against us).

8 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), בְּתֵ֣ת (In giving) יְהוָה֩ (YHWH) לָכֶ֨ם (to you⁺) בָּעֶ֜רֶב (in the evening) בָּשָׂ֣ר (flesh) לֶאֱכֹ֗ל (to eat), וְלֶ֤חֶם (and bread) בַּבֹּ֙קֶר֙ (in the morning) לִשְׂבֹּ֔עַ (to the full). בִּשְׁמֹ֤עַ (In hearing) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) תְּלֻנֹּ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ complaints) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ have) מַלִּינִ֖ם (complain) עָלָ֑יו (against Him). וְנַ֣חְנוּ (And we) מָ֔ה (are what)? לֹא־ (Not) עָלֵ֥ינוּ (are against us) תְלֻנֹּתֵיכֶ֖ם (Your⁺ complaints), כִּ֥י (but) עַל־ (against) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

9 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֔ן (Aaron), אֱמֹ֗ר (Say) אֶֽל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַת֙ (the congregation) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), קִרְב֖וּ (Come near) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), כִּ֣י (for) שָׁמַ֔ע (He has heard) אֵ֖ת (-) תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ complaints).

10 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כְּדַבֵּ֤ר (as spoke) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֣ת (the congregation) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וַיִּפְנ֖וּ (that they turned) אֶל־ (toward) הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר (the wilderness), וְהִנֵּה֙ (and behold), כְּב֣וֹד (the glory) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) נִרְאָ֖ה (appeared) בֶּעָנָֽן׃פ (in the cloud).

11 וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 12 שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי (I have heard) אֶת־ (-) תְּלוּנֹּת֮ (the complaints) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ (of Israel). דַּבֵּ֨ר (Speak) אֲלֵהֶ֜ם (to them), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), בֵּ֤ין (Between) הָֽעַרְבַּ֙יִם֙ (the evenings) תֹּאכְל֣וּ (you⁺ shall eat) בָשָׂ֔ר (flesh), וּבַבֹּ֖קֶר (and in the morning) תִּשְׂבְּעוּ־ (you⁺ shall be filled) לָ֑חֶם (with bread); וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם (and you⁺ shall know) כִּ֛י (that) אֲנִ֥י (I) יְהוָ֖ה (am YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

13 וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass) בָעֶ֔רֶב (that at the evening) וַתַּ֣עַל (and came up) הַשְּׂלָ֔ו (the quail) וַתְּכַ֖ס (and covered) אֶת־ (-) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה (the camp), וּבַבֹּ֗קֶר (and in the morning) הָֽיְתָה֙ (was) שִׁכְבַ֣ת (lying) הַטַּ֔ל (the dew) סָבִ֖יב (around) לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (the camp). 14 וַתַּ֖עַל (And went up) שִׁכְבַ֣ת (the lying) הַטָּ֑ל (of the dew), וְהִנֵּ֞ה (and behold) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֤י (the face) הַמִּדְבָּר֙ (of the wilderness) דַּ֣ק (a thin) מְחֻסְפָּ֔ס (flaky substance), דַּ֥ק (as thin) כַּכְּפֹ֖ר (as frost) עַל־ (on) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth). 15 וַיִּרְא֣וּ (And saw it) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (and they said) אִ֤ישׁ (each man) אֶל־ (to) אָחִיו֙ (his brother), מָ֣ן (What is) ה֔וּא (it)? כִּ֛י (For) לֹ֥א (not) יָדְע֖וּ (they did know) מַה־ (what) ה֑וּא (it was).

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), ה֣וּא (It is) הַלֶּ֔חֶם (the bread) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נָתַ֧ן (has given) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) לְאָכְלָֽה׃ (for food). 16 זֶ֤ה (This is) הַדָּבָר֙ (the word) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוָּ֣ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): לִקְט֣וּ (Let gather) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (from it) אִ֖ישׁ (every man) לְפִ֣י (according to the mouths) אָכְל֑וֹ (of his eating), עֹ֣מֶר (an omer) לַגֻּלְגֹּ֗לֶת (for each person), מִסְפַּר֙ (to the number) נַפְשֹׁ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ souls); אִ֛ישׁ (each man) לַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (for those who are) בְּאָהֳל֖וֹ (in his tent) תִּקָּֽחוּ׃ (shall take).

17 וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־ (And did) כֵ֖ן (so) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). וַֽיִּלְקְט֔וּ (And they gathered) הַמַּרְבֶּ֖ה (the one much), וְהַמַּמְעִֽיט׃ (and the one little). 18 וַיָּמֹ֣דּוּ (And they measured it) בָעֹ֔מֶר (with the omer), וְלֹ֤א (and nothing) הֶעְדִּיף֙ (had left over) הַמַּרְבֶּ֔ה (he who gathered much), וְהַמַּמְעִ֖יט (and he who gathered little) לֹ֣א (no) הֶחְסִ֑יר (had lack). אִ֥ישׁ (Each man) לְפִֽי־ (according to the mouths) אָכְל֖וֹ (of his eating) לָקָֽטוּ׃ (gathered).

19 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses), אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them) אִ֕ישׁ (Man) אַל־ (not) יוֹתֵ֥ר (let leave) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (any of it) עַד־ (until) בֹּֽקֶר׃ (morning). 20 וְלֹא־ (And not) שָׁמְע֣וּ (they did listen) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), וַיּוֹתִ֨רוּ (and left) אֲנָשִׁ֤ים (some men) מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (from it) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֔קֶר (morning), וַיָּ֥רֻם (and it bred) תּוֹלָעִ֖ים (worms) וַיִּבְאַ֑שׁ (and stank). וַיִּקְצֹ֥ף (And was angry) עֲלֵהֶ֖ם (with them) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses).

21 וַיִּלְקְט֤וּ (And they gathered) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) בַּבֹּ֣קֶר (in the morning) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (by the morning), אִ֖ישׁ (each man) כְּפִ֣י (according to the mouths) אָכְל֑וֹ (of his eating). וְחַ֥ם (When grew hot) הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ (the sun), וְנָמָֽס׃ (and it melted).

The Sabbath Observed

22 וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass), בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֗י (the sixth), לָֽקְט֥וּ (that they gathered) לֶ֙חֶם֙ (bread) מִשְׁנֶ֔ה (double)— שְׁנֵ֥י (two) הָעֹ֖מֶר (omers) לָאֶחָ֑ד (for each one) וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (and came) כָּל־ (all) נְשִׂיאֵ֣י (the leaders) הָֽעֵדָ֔ה (of the congregation) וַיַּגִּ֖ידוּ (and told) לְמֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses). 23 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them), ה֚וּא (This) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (is what) דִּבֶּ֣ר (has said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): שַׁבָּת֧וֹן (Is a complete rest) שַׁבַּת־ (a Sabbath) קֹ֛דֶשׁ (holy) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) מָחָ֑ר (tomorrow) אֵ֣ת (-). אֲשֶׁר־ (What) תֹּאפ֞וּ (you⁺ bake), אֵפ֗וּ (bake), וְאֵ֤ת (and) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (what) תְּבַשְּׁלוּ֙ (you⁺ boil), בַּשֵּׁ֔לוּ (boil); וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all that) הָ֣עֹדֵ֔ף (remains), הַנִּ֧יחוּ (lay up) לָכֶ֛ם (for yourselves) לְמִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (to be kept) עַד־ (until) הַבֹּֽקֶר׃ (the morning).

24 וַיַּנִּ֤יחוּ (And they laid up) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) עַד־ (until) הַבֹּ֔קֶר (the morning), כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר (as) צִוָּ֣ה (had commanded) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses), וְלֹ֣א (and not) הִבְאִ֔ישׁ (it did stink), וְרִמָּ֖ה (and worms) לֹא־ (not) הָ֥יְתָה (were there any) בּֽוֹ׃ (in it). 25 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses), אִכְלֻ֣הוּ (Eat it) הַיּ֔וֹם (today); כִּֽי־ (for) שַׁבָּ֥ת (is a Sabbath) הַיּ֖וֹם (today) לַיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH); הַיּ֕וֹם (today) לֹ֥א (not) תִמְצָאֻ֖הוּ (you⁺ will find it) בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃ (in the field). 26 שֵׁ֥שֶׁת (Six) יָמִ֖ים (days) תִּלְקְטֻ֑הוּ (you⁺ shall gather it), וּבַיּ֧וֹם (and on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֛י (seventh), שַׁבָּ֖ת (the Sabbath), לֹ֥א (none) יִֽהְיֶה־ (there will be) בּֽוֹ׃ (in it).

27 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (the seventh), יָצְא֥וּ (went out) מִן־ (of) הָעָ֖ם (the some people) לִלְקֹ֑ט (to gather), וְלֹ֖א (and none) מָצָֽאוּ׃ס (they found). 28 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses), עַד־ (How) אָ֙נָה֙ (long) מֵֽאַנְתֶּ֔ם (do you⁺ refuse) לִשְׁמֹ֥ר (to keep) מִצְוֺתַ֖י (My commandments) וְתוֹרֹתָֽי׃ (and My laws)? 29 רְא֗וּ (See) כִּֽי־ (that) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) נָתַ֣ן (has given) לָכֶ֣ם (to you⁺) הַשַּׁבָּת֒ (the Sabbath); עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֠ן (thus) ה֣וּא (He) נֹתֵ֥ן (gives) לָכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֖י (the sixth) לֶ֣חֶם (bread for) יוֹמָ֑יִם (two days). שְׁב֣וּ׀ (Let remain) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) תַּחְתָּ֗יו (in his place); אַל־ (not) יֵ֥צֵא (let go out) אִ֛ישׁ (man) מִמְּקֹמ֖וֹ (from his place) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִֽי׃ (the seventh).

30 וַיִּשְׁבְּת֥וּ (And rested) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַשְּׁבִעִֽי׃ (the seventh).

The Jar of Manna

31 וַיִּקְרְא֧וּ (And called) בֵֽית־ (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (its) שְׁמ֖וֹ (name) מָ֑ן (Manna), וְה֗וּא (and it) כְּזֶ֤רַע (was like seed) גַּד֙ (coriander), לָבָ֔ן (white), וְטַעְמ֖וֹ (and its taste) כְּצַפִּיחִ֥ת (was like wafers) בִּדְבָֽשׁ׃ (with honey). 32 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), זֶ֤ה (This is) הַדָּבָר֙ (the word) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוָּ֣ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): מְלֹ֤א (Fullness) הָעֹ֙מֶר֙ (of the omer) מִמֶּ֔נּוּ (from it) לְמִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (is to be kept) לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (for your⁺ generations), לְמַ֣עַן׀ (so that) יִרְא֣וּ (they may see) אֶת־ (-) הַלֶּ֗חֶם (the bread) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (with which) הֶאֱכַ֤לְתִּי (I fed) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness), בְּהוֹצִיאִ֥י (when I brought out) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

33 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) אֶֽל־ (to) אַהֲרֹ֗ן (Aaron), קַ֚ח (Take) צִנְצֶ֣נֶת (pot) אַחַ֔ת (one), וְתֶן־ (and put) שָׁ֥מָּה (in it) מְלֹֽא־ (fullness) הָעֹ֖מֶר (of the omer) מָ֑ן (of manna). וְהַנַּ֤ח (And lay up) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לְמִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת (to be kept) לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (for your⁺ generations). 34 כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (As) צִוָּ֥ה (commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses), וַיַּנִּיחֵ֧הוּ (and laid it up) אַהֲרֹ֛ן (Aaron) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הָעֵדֻ֖ת (the Testimony) לְמִשְׁמָֽרֶת׃ (to be kept).

35 וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) אָֽכְל֤וּ (ate) אֶת־ (-) הַמָּן֙ (the manna) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (forty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years), עַד־ (until) בֹּאָ֖ם (they came) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) נוֹשָׁ֑בֶת (inhabited). אֶת־ (-) הַמָּן֙ (the manna) אָֽכְל֔וּ (they ate) עַד־ (until) בֹּאָ֕ם (they came) אֶל־ (to) קְצֵ֖ה (the border) אֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan). 36 וְהָעֹ֕מֶר (And an omer) עֲשִׂרִ֥ית (a tenth) הָאֵיפָ֖ה (of an ephah) הֽוּא׃פ (is).
