John 11

The Death of Lazarus

1 Ἦν (Was) δέ (now) τις (a certain man) ἀσθενῶν (sick), Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθανίας (Bethany), ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) κώμης (village) Μαρίας (of Mary) καὶ (and) Μάρθας (Martha) τῆς (the) ἀδελφῆς (sister) αὐτῆς (of her). 2 ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) Μαριὰμ (Mary) (the one) ἀλείψασα (having anointed) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) μύρῳ (with fragrant oil) καὶ (and) ἐκμάξασα (having wiped) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ταῖς (with the) θριξὶν (hair) αὐτῆς (of her), ἧς (whose) (-) ἀδελφὸς (brother) Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἠσθένει (was sick). 3 ἀπέστειλαν (Sent) οὖν (therefore) αἱ (the) ἀδελφαὶ (sisters) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγουσαι (saying)· Κύριε (Lord), ἴδε (behold) ὃν (the one whom) φιλεῖς (You love) ἀσθενεῖ (is sick).

4 Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (then) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Αὕτη (This) (-) ἀσθένεια (sickness) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) πρὸς (unto) θάνατον (death) ἀλλ’ (but) ὑπὲρ (for) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δοξασθῇ (may be glorified) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δι’ (through) αὐτῆς (it).

5 Ἠγάπα (Loved) δὲ (now) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὴν (-) Μάρθαν (Martha) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀδελφὴν (sister) αὐτῆς (of her) καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus). 6 ὡς (When) οὖν (therefore) ἤκουσεν (He heard) ὅτι (that) ἀσθενεῖ (he is sick), τότε (then) μὲν (indeed) ἔμεινεν (He remained) ἐν (in) (in which) ἦν (He was) τόπῳ (the place) δύο (two) ἡμέρας (days)· 7 ἔπειτα (Then) μετὰ (after) τοῦτο (this) λέγει (He says) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples)· Ἄγωμεν (Let us go) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea) πάλιν (again).

8 Λέγουσιν (Say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples)· Ῥαββί (Rabbi), νῦν (just now) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) σε (You) λιθάσαι (to stone) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) ὑπάγεις (You are going) ἐκεῖ (there)?

9 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Οὐχὶ (Not) δώδεκα (twelve) ὧραί (hours) εἰσιν (are there) τῆς (of the) ἡμέρας (day)? ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (may walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day), οὐ (not) προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this) βλέπει (he sees)· 10 ἐὰν (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (may walk) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νυκτί (night), προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).

11 Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπεν (He said), καὶ (and) μετὰ (after) τοῦτο (this) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Λάζαρος (Lazarus) (the) φίλος (friend) ἡμῶν (of us) κεκοίμηται (has fallen asleep)· ἀλλὰ (but) πορεύομαι (I go) ἵνα (so that) ἐξυπνίσω (I may awaken) αὐτόν (him).

12 Εἶπαν (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) κεκοίμηται (he has fallen asleep), σωθήσεται (he will be saved). 13 εἰρήκει (Had spoken) δὲ (however) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) θανάτου (death) αὐτοῦ (of him)· ἐκεῖνοι (they) δὲ (however) ἔδοξαν (thought) ὅτι (that) περὶ (about) τῆς (the) κοιμήσεως (rest) τοῦ (-) ὕπνου (of sleep) λέγει (He speaks).

14 Τότε (Then) οὖν (therefore) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) παρρησίᾳ (plainly)· Λάζαρος (Lazarus) ἀπέθανεν (has died), 15 καὶ (And) χαίρω (I rejoice) δι’ (for sake of) ὑμᾶς (you⁺), ἵνα (so that) πιστεύσητε (you⁺ might believe), ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἤμην (I was) ἐκεῖ (there)· ἀλλὰ (But) ἄγωμεν (let us go) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him).

16 Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) Θωμᾶς (Thomas) (-) λεγόμενος (called) Δίδυμος (Didymus) τοῖς (to the) συμμαθηταῖς (fellow disciples)· Ἄγωμεν (Let go) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (us) ἵνα (so that) ἀποθάνωμεν (we may die) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him).

Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary

17 Ἐλθὼν (Having come) οὖν (therefore) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εὗρεν (found) αὐτὸν (him) τέσσαρας (four) ἤδη (already) ἡμέρας (days) ἔχοντα (having been) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μνημείῳ (tomb). 18 ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) (-) Βηθανία (Bethany) ἐγγὺς (near) τῶν (-) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) ὡς (about) ἀπὸ (away) σταδίων (stadia) δεκαπέντε (fifteen). 19 πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (now) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐληλύθεισαν (had come) πρὸς (to) τὴν (-) Μάρθαν (Martha) καὶ (and) Μαριὰμ (Mary), ἵνα (so that) παραμυθήσωνται (they might console) αὐτὰς (them) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother). 20  (-) οὖν (Therefore) Μάρθα (Martha) ὡς (when) ἤκουσεν (she heard) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔρχεται (is coming), ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him)· Μαριὰμ (Mary) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) οἴκῳ (house) ἐκαθέζετο (was sitting).

21 Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (then) (-) Μάρθα (Martha) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus)· Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) ἦς (You had been) ὧδε (here), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἀπέθανεν (would have died) (the) ἀδελφός (brother) μου (of me). 22 ἀλλὰ (But) καὶ (even) νῦν (now) οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσῃ (You might ask) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) δώσει (will give) σοι (You) (-) Θεός (God).

23 Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἀναστήσεται (Will rise again) (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you).

24 Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) (-) Μάρθα (Martha)· Οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) ἀναστήσεται (he will rise again) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).

25 Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτῇ (to her) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) (the) ἀνάστασις (resurrection) καὶ (and) (the) ζωή (life)· (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me) κἂν (even if) ἀποθάνῃ (he may die) ζήσεται (he will live), 26 καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) (-) ζῶν (living) καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (shall die) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age)· πιστεύεις (Do you believe) τοῦτο (this)?

27 Λέγει (She says) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord)· ἐγὼ (I) πεπίστευκα (have believed) ὅτι (that) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) (the One) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐρχόμενος (coming).

28 Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (these things) εἰποῦσα (having said) ἀπῆλθεν (she went away) καὶ (and) ἐφώνησεν (called) Μαριὰμ (Mary) τὴν (the) ἀδελφὴν (sister) αὐτῆς (of her) λάθρᾳ (secretly) εἰποῦσα (having said)· (The) Διδάσκαλος (Teacher) πάρεστιν (is come) καὶ (and) φωνεῖ (He calls) σε (you). 29 ἐκείνη (She) δὲ (then) ὡς (as) ἤκουσεν (she heard), ἠγέρθη (rose up) ταχὺ (quickly) καὶ (and) ἤρχετο (was coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him)·

30 Οὔπω (Not yet) δὲ (now) ἐληλύθει (had come) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village), ἀλλ’ (but) ἦν (was) ἔτι (still) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) τόπῳ (place) ὅπου (where) ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) (-) Μάρθα (Martha). 31 οἱ (The) οὖν (then) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) οἱ (-) ὄντες (being) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) καὶ (and) παραμυθούμενοι (consoling) αὐτήν (her), ἰδόντες (having seen) τὴν (-) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ὅτι (that) ταχέως (quickly) ἀνέστη (she rose up) καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went out), ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῇ (her), δόξαντες (having thought) ὅτι (that) ὑπάγει (she is going) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb) ἵνα (so that) κλαύσῃ (she might weep) ἐκεῖ (there). 32  (-) οὖν (Therefore) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ὡς (as) ἦλθεν (she came) ὅπου (to where) ἦν (was) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἰδοῦσα (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔπεσεν (fell) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet), λέγουσα (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) ἦς (You had been) ὧδε (here), οὐκ (not) ἄν (-) μου (of me) ἀπέθανεν (would have died) (the) ἀδελφός (brother).

33 Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) ὡς (as) εἶδεν (He saw) αὐτὴν (her) κλαίουσαν (weeping) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) συνελθόντας (having come with) αὐτῇ (her) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) κλαίοντας (weeping), ἐνεβριμήσατο (He was deeply moved) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit) καὶ (and) ἐτάραξεν (troubled) ἑαυτόν (Himself), 34 καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said)· Ποῦ (Where) τεθείκατε (have you⁺ laid) αὐτόν (him)?

Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Κύριε (Lord), ἔρχου (come) καὶ (and) ἴδε (see).

35 Ἐδάκρυσεν (Wept) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus).

36 Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews)· Ἴδε (Behold) πῶς (how) ἐφίλει (He was loving) αὐτόν (him).

37 Τινὲς (Some) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) εἶπαν (said)· Οὐκ (Not) ἐδύνατο (was able) οὗτος (this man) (-) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) τοῦ (of the) τυφλοῦ (blind) ποιῆσαι (to have caused) ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) οὗτος (this one) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (should have died)?

38 Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) ἐμβριμώμενος (being deeply moved) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself) ἔρχεται (comes) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) μνημεῖον (tomb)· ἦν (It was) δὲ (now) σπήλαιον (a cave), καὶ (and) λίθος (a stone) ἐπέκειτο (was lying) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτῷ (it). 39 λέγει (Says) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἄρατε (Take away) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone).

40 Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Οὐκ (Not) εἶπόν (did I say) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) πιστεύσῃς (you should believe) ὄψῃ (you will see) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?

41 Ἦραν (They took away) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone). (-) δὲ (Now) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἦρεν (lifted) τοὺς (His) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἄνω (upward) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said)· Πάτερ (Father), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) ἤκουσάς (You heard) μου (Me). 42 ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (and) ᾔδειν (knew) ὅτι (that) πάντοτέ (always) μου (Me) ἀκούεις (You hear)· ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) τὸν (-) περιεστῶτα (standing around) εἶπον (I said it), ἵνα (so that) πιστεύσωσιν (they may believe) ὅτι (that) σύ (You) με (Me) ἀπέστειλας (sent).

44 ἐξῆλθεν (Came out) (the one) τεθνηκὼς (having been dead) δεδεμένος (bound) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) κειρίαις (with linen strips), καὶ (and) (the) ὄψις (face) αὐτοῦ (of him) σουδαρίῳ (in a soudario) περιεδέδετο (bound around).
