Deuteronomy 28
1. The blessings for obedience
15. The curses for disobedience

They will eat the offspring of your livestock and the produce of your land until you are destroyed.

An invading nation would consume the animals, crops, and resources on which Israel depended for food and livelihood. In an agrarian society, the loss of herds and harvests meant famine, poverty, and the collapse of ordinary life. What God had given as covenant blessing would be taken away through foreign conquest.

Jer 5:17 They will devour your harvest and food; they will eat up……
Jdg 6:4 encamping against them as far as Gaza and destroying…
2Ki 6:25-29 So there was a great famine in Samaria…

They will leave you no grain or new wine or oil,

The staples of Israel’s food supply would be exhausted. Grain provided bread, wine was a common drink and part of worship, and oil was used for food, light, and anointing. Their removal would leave the land barren and deprive the people of the provisions needed for daily life and offerings before the Lord.

Jol 1:10 The field is ruined; the land mourns…
Hag 1:11 I have summoned a drought on the fields and on the mountains…
Hos 2:9 Therefore I will take back My grain in its time…

no calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks,

The invaders would also strip Israel of animals needed for food, breeding, and sacrifice. Without calves and lambs, households would lose both immediate sustenance and the means to rebuild their herds. The loss would also disrupt the sacrificial worship that stood at the center of Israel’s covenant life.

Jol 1:18 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion…
Ezk 34:5-6 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,…

until they have caused you to perish.

The warning reaches beyond temporary hardship to national ruin. Persistent rebellion would bring defeat, deprivation, and exile, demonstrating the grave consequences of abandoning the Lord’s commandments.

Lev 26:38 You will perish among the nations, and the land…

Deuteronomy 28:51 sketches a grim reversal of every blessing that obedience once guaranteed. Invaders will consume livestock, crops, and every symbol of prosperity until the nation collapses. The verse underscores covenant accountability: when God’s people persist in rebellion, He withholds provision to draw them back to Himself. Yet even this severe judgment carries hope, for the purpose of discipline is ultimate restoration for those who repent (Leviticus 26:40–45).
