When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he told his disciples, 1When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he told his disciples,
"You know that the Passover will take place in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."2"You know that the Passover takes place after two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."
Then the high priests and the elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas. 3Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas,
They conspired to arrest Jesus by treachery and to kill him. 4and they conspired to arrest Jesus in a treacherous way and kill him.
But they kept saying, "This must not happen during the festival. Otherwise, there'll be a riot among the people."5"Not during the festival," they said, "so there won't be rioting among the people."
While Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, 6While Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper,
a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume and poured it on his head while he sat at the table. 7a woman approached him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume. She poured it on his head as he was reclining at the table.
But when the disciples saw this, they became irritated and said, "Why this waste? 8When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked.
Surely this perfume could've been sold for a high price and the money given to the destitute."9"This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor."
But knowing this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you bothering the woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 10Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for me.
You'll always have the destitute with you, but you'll not always have me. 11You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.
When she poured this perfume on my body, she was preparing me for burial. 12By pouring this perfume on my body, she has prepared me for burial.
I tell all of you with certainty, wherever this gospel is proclaimed throughout the whole world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her."13Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."
Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the high priests 14Then one of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
and inquired, "What are you willing to give me if I betray Jesus to you?" They offered him 30 pieces of silver, 15and said, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him.
and from then on he began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus. 16And from that time he started looking for a good opportunity to betray him.
On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?"17On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"
He said, "Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near. I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house."'"18"Go into the city to a certain man," he said, "and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My time is near; I am celebrating the Passover at your place with my disciples.'"
So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal.19So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
When evening came, Jesus was sitting at the table with the Twelve.20When evening came, he was reclining at the table with the Twelve.
While they were eating, he said, "I tell all of you with certainty, one of you is going to betray me."21While they were eating, he said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me."
Feeling deeply distressed, each one began to ask him, "Surely I am not the one, Lord?"22Deeply distressed, each one began to say to him, "Surely not I, Lord?"
He replied, "The man who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 23He replied, "The one who dipped his hand with me in the bowl--he will betray me.
The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him. How terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born."24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born."
Then Judas, who was going to betray him, asked, "Rabbi, I'm not the one, am I?" Jesus told him, "You have said so."25Judas, his betrayer, replied, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" "You have said it," he told him.
While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and handed it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it. This is my body."26As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take and eat it; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you, 27Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, "Drink from it, all of you.
because this is my blood of the new covenant that is being poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins. 28For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell all of you I will never again drink the product of the vine until that day when I drink it with you once again in my Father's kingdom."29But I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.30After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Then Jesus told them, "All of you will turn against me this very night, because it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 31Then Jesus said to them, "Tonight all of you will fall away because of me, for it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.
However, after I have been raised, I will go to Galilee ahead of you."32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."
But Peter told him, "Even if everyone else turns against you, I certainly won't!"33Peter told him, "Even if everyone falls away because of you, I will never fall away."
Jesus told him, "I tell you with certainty, before a rooster crows this very night, you will deny me three times."34"Truly I tell you," Jesus said to him, "tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times."
Peter told him, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!" And all the disciples said the same thing.35"Even if I have to die with you," Peter told him, "I will never deny you," and all the disciples said the same thing.
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane. He told the disciples, "Sit down here while I go over there and pray." 36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he told the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
Taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, he began to be grieved and troubled. 37Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
Then he told them, "I'm so deeply grieved that I feel I'm about to die. Wait here and stay awake with me."38He said to them, "I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me."
Going on a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not what I want but what you want."39Going a little farther, he fell facedown and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
When he went back to the disciples, he found them asleep. He told Peter, "So, you men couldn't stay awake with me for one hour, could you? 40Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, "So, couldn't you stay awake with me one hour?
All of you must stay awake and pray that you won't be tempted. The spirit is indeed willing, but the body is weak."41Stay awake and pray, so that you won't enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cup cannot go away unless I drink it, let your will be done." 42Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."
Then he came back and found them asleep, because they could not keep their eyes open. 43And he came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.
After leaving them again, he went away and prayed again for the third time, saying the same thing.44After leaving them, he went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.
Then he came back to the disciples and told them, "You might as well keep on sleeping and resting. Look! The time is near for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? See, the time is near. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Get up! Let's go! See, the one who is betraying me is near!"46Get up; let's go. See, my betrayer is near."
Just then, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. A large crowd armed with swords and clubs was with him. They were from the high priests and elders of the people. 47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. A large mob with swords and clubs was with him from the chief priests and elders of the people.
Now the betrayer personally had given them a signal, saying, "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him."48His betrayer had given them a sign: "The one I kiss, he's the one; arrest him."
So Judas immediately went up to Jesus and said, "Hello, Rabbi!" and kissed him tenderly.49So immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.
Jesus asked him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then the other men surged forward, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him.50"Friend," Jesus asked him, "why have you come?" Then they came up, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him.
Suddenly, one of the men with Jesus reached out his hand, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear. 51At that moment one of those with Jesus reached out his hand and drew his sword. He struck the high priest's servant and cut off his ear.
Jesus told him, "Put your sword back in its place! Everyone who uses a sword will be killed by a sword. 52Then Jesus told him, "Put your sword back in its place because all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.
Don't you think that I could call on my Father, and he would send me more than twelve legions of angels now? 53Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and he will provide me here and now with more than twelve legions of angels?
How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say this must happen?"54How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?"
At this point, Jesus asked the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a bandit? Day after day I sat teaching in the Temple, yet you didn't arrest me. 55At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me? Every day I used to sit, teaching in the temple, and you didn't arrest me.
But all of this has happened so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away.56But all this has happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and ran away.
Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled. 57Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened.
Peter, however, followed him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He went inside and sat down with the servants to see how this would end.58Peter was following him at a distance right to the high priest's courtyard. He went in and was sitting with the servants to see the outcome.
Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death. 59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death,
But they couldn't find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. At last two men came forward 60but they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two who came forward
and stated, "This man said, 'I can destroy the sanctuary of God and rebuild it in three days.'"61stated, "This man said, 'I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"
At this, the high priest stood up and asked Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?" 62The high priest stood up and said to him, "Don't you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?"
But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest told him, "I command you by the living God to tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God!"63But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."
Jesus told him, "You have said so. Nevertheless I tell you, from now on you will see 'the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power' and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'" 64"You have said it," Jesus told him. "But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Listen! You yourselves have just heard the blasphemy! 65Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you've heard the blasphemy.
What is your verdict?" They replied, "He deserves to die!"66What is your decision?" They answered, "He deserves death!"
Then they spit in his face and hit him. Some slapped him, 67Then they spat in his face and beat him; others slapped him
saying, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you?"68and said, "Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who was it that hit you?"
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant girl came up to him and said, "You, too, were with Jesus the Galilean."69Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl approached him and said, "You were with Jesus the Galilean too."
But he denied it in front of them all. "I don't know what you're talking about!" he exclaimed.70But he denied it in front of everyone: "I don't know what you're talking about."
As he went out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, "This man was with Jesus from Nazareth." 71When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!"
Again he denied it and swore with an oath, "I don't know the man!"72And again he denied it with an oath: "I don't know the man!"
After a little while, the people who were standing there came up and told Peter, "Obviously you're also one of them, because your accent gives you away."73After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, "You really are one of them, since even your accent gives you away."
Then he began to curse violently. "I don't know the man!" he swore solemnly. Just then a rooster crowed. 74Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed,
Peter remembered the words of Jesus when he said, "Before a rooster crows, you'll deny me three times." Then he went outside and cried bitterly.75and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
