When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he told his disciples, 1Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους εἶπεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ
"You know that the Passover will take place in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."2Οἴδατε ὅτι μετὰ δύο ἡμέρας τὸ πάσχα γίνεται καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς τὸ σταυρωθῆναι
Then the high priests and the elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas.
They conspired to arrest Jesus by treachery and to kill him.
But they kept saying, "This must not happen during the festival. Otherwise, there'll be a riot among the people."5ἔλεγον δέ Μὴ ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ ἵνα μὴ θόρυβος γένηται ἐν τῷ λαῷ
While Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, 6Τοῦ δὲ Ἰησοῦ γενομένου ἐν Βηθανίᾳ ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος τοῦ λεπροῦ
a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume and poured it on his head while he sat at the table.
But when the disciples saw this, they became irritated and said, "Why this waste? 8Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἠγανάκτησαν λέγοντες Εἰς τί ἀπώλεια αὕτη
Surely this perfume could've been sold for a high price and the money given to the destitute."9ἐδύνατο γὰρ τοῦτο πραθῆναι πολλοῦ καὶ δοθῆναι πτωχοῖς
But knowing this, Jesus asked them, "Why are you bothering the woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 10Γνοὺς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί κόπους παρέχετε τῇ γυναικί ἔργον γὰρ καλὸν ἠργάσατο εἰς ἐμέ
You'll always have the destitute with you, but you'll not always have me. 11πάντοτε γὰρ τοὺς πτωχοὺς ἔχετε μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε
When she poured this perfume on my body, she was preparing me for burial.
I tell all of you with certainty, wherever this gospel is proclaimed throughout the whole world, what she has done will also be told as a memorial to her."13ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦτο ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ κόσμῳ λαληθήσεται καὶ ἐποίησεν αὕτη εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς
Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the high priests
and inquired, "What are you willing to give me if I betray Jesus to you?" They offered him 30 pieces of silver,
and from then on he began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?"17Τῇ δὲ πρώτῃ τῶν ἀζύμων προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμέν σοι φαγεῖν τὸ πάσχα
He said, "Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near. I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house."'"18 δὲ εἶπεν Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν πόλιν πρὸς τὸν δεῖνα καὶ εἴπατε αὐτῷ Διδάσκαλος λέγει καιρός μου ἐγγύς ἐστιν πρὸς σὲ ποιῶ τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου
So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal.19καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ ὡς συνέταξεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα
When evening came, Jesus was sitting at the table with the Twelve.20Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ἀνέκειτο μετὰ τῶν δώδεκα μαθητῶν
While they were eating, he said, "I tell all of you with certainty, one of you is going to betray me."21καὶ ἐσθιόντων αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με
Feeling deeply distressed, each one began to ask him, "Surely I am not the one, Lord?"22Καὶ λυπούμενοι σφόδρα ἤρξαντο λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς ἕκαστος Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριε
He replied, "The man who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 23 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ἐμβάψας μετ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ τρυβλίῳ οὗτός με παραδώσει
The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him. How terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born."24 μὲν Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὑπάγει καθὼς γέγραπται περὶ αὐτοῦ οὐαὶ δὲ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται καλὸν ἦν αὐτῷ εἰ οὐκ ἐγεννήθη ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος
Then Judas, who was going to betray him, asked, "Rabbi, I'm not the one, am I?" Jesus told him, "You have said so."25Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰούδας παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν εἶπεν Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι ῥαββί Λέγει αὐτῷ Σὺ εἶπας
While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and handed it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it. This is my body."26Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν λαβὼν Ἰησοῦς ἄρτον καὶ εὐλογήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ δοὺς τοῖς μαθηταῖς εἶπεν Λάβετε φάγετε τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you, 27Καὶ λαβὼν ποτήριον καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων Πίετε ἐξ αὐτοῦ πάντες
because this is my blood of the new covenant that is being poured out for many people for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell all of you I will never again drink the product of the vine until that day when I drink it with you once again in my Father's kingdom."29λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπ’ ἄρτι ἐκ τούτου τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης ὅταν αὐτὸ πίνω μεθ’ ὑμῶν καινὸν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Πατρός μου
After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.30Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν
Then Jesus told them, "All of you will turn against me this very night, because it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 31Τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Πάντες ὑμεῖς σκανδαλισθήσεσθε ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ γέγραπται γάρ Πατάξω τὸν ποιμένα Καὶ διασκορπισθήσονται τὰ πρόβατα τῆς ποίμνης
However, after I have been raised, I will go to Galilee ahead of you."32Μετὰ δὲ τὸ ἐγερθῆναί με προάξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν
But Peter told him, "Even if everyone else turns against you, I certainly won't!"33Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εἰ πάντες σκανδαλισθήσονται ἐν σοί ἐγὼ οὐδέποτε σκανδαλισθήσομαι
Jesus told him, "I tell you with certainty, before a rooster crows this very night, you will deny me three times."34Ἔφη αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με
Peter told him, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!" And all the disciples said the same thing.35Λέγει αὐτῷ Πέτρος Κἂν δέῃ με σὺν σοὶ ἀποθανεῖν οὐ μή σε ἀπαρνήσομαι ὁμοίως καὶ πάντες οἱ μαθηταὶ εἶπαν
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane. He told the disciples, "Sit down here while I go over there and pray." 36Τότε ἔρχεται μετ’ αὐτῶν Ἰησοῦς εἰς χωρίον λεγόμενον Γεθσημανὶ καὶ λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς Καθίσατε αὐτοῦ ἕως οὗ ἀπελθὼν ἐκεῖ προσεύξωμαι
Taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, he began to be grieved and troubled.
Then he told them, "I'm so deeply grieved that I feel I'm about to die. Wait here and stay awake with me."38τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς Περίλυπός ἐστιν ψυχή μου ἕως θανάτου μείνατε ὧδε καὶ γρηγορεῖτε μετ’ ἐμοῦ
Going on a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, "O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not what I want but what you want."39Καὶ προελθὼν μικρὸν ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ προσευχόμενος καὶ λέγων Πάτερ μου εἰ δυνατόν ἐστιν παρελθάτω ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο πλὴν οὐχ ὡς ἐγὼ θέλω ἀλλ’ ὡς σύ
When he went back to the disciples, he found them asleep. He told Peter, "So, you men couldn't stay awake with me for one hour, could you? 40Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ Οὕτως οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι μετ’ ἐμοῦ
All of you must stay awake and pray that you won't be tempted. The spirit is indeed willing, but the body is weak."41γρηγορεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον δὲ σὰρξ ἀσθενής
He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cup cannot go away unless I drink it, let your will be done." 42Πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο λέγων Πάτερ μου εἰ οὐ δύναται τοῦτο παρελθεῖν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸ πίω γενηθήτω τὸ θέλημά σου
Then he came back and found them asleep, because they could not keep their eyes open.
After leaving them again, he went away and prayed again for the third time, saying the same thing.44Καὶ ἀφεὶς αὐτοὺς πάλιν ἀπελθὼν προσηύξατο ἐκ τρίτου τὸν αὐτὸν λόγον εἰπὼν πάλιν
Then he came back to the disciples and told them, "You might as well keep on sleeping and resting. Look! The time is near for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 45τότε ἔρχεται πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Καθεύδετε ‹τὸ› λοιπὸν καὶ ἀναπαύεσθε ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν ὥρα καὶ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται εἰς χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλῶν
Get up! Let's go! See, the one who is betraying me is near!"46ἐγείρεσθε ἄγωμεν ἰδοὺ ἤγγικεν παραδιδούς με
Just then, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. A large crowd armed with swords and clubs was with him. They were from the high priests and elders of the people.
Now the betrayer personally had given them a signal, saying, "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him."48 δὲ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς σημεῖον λέγων Ὃν ἂν φιλήσω αὐτός ἐστιν κρατήσατε αὐτόν
So Judas immediately went up to Jesus and said, "Hello, Rabbi!" and kissed him tenderly.49καὶ εὐθέως προσελθὼν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἶπεν Χαῖρε ῥαββί καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν
Jesus asked him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then the other men surged forward, took hold of Jesus, and arrested him.50 δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἑταῖρε ἐφ’ πάρει Τότε προσελθόντες ἐπέβαλον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκράτησαν αὐτόν
Suddenly, one of the men with Jesus reached out his hand, drew his sword, and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.
Jesus told him, "Put your sword back in its place! Everyone who uses a sword will be killed by a sword. 52Τότε λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Ἀπόστρεψον τὴν μάχαιράν σου εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς πάντες γὰρ οἱ λαβόντες μάχαιραν ἐν μαχαίρῃ ἀπολοῦνται
Don't you think that I could call on my Father, and he would send me more than twelve legions of angels now?
How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say this must happen?"54πῶς οὖν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ ὅτι οὕτως δεῖ γενέσθαι
At this point, Jesus asked the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a bandit? Day after day I sat teaching in the Temple, yet you didn't arrest me. 55Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς τοῖς ὄχλοις Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων συλλαβεῖν με καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐκαθεζόμην διδάσκων καὶ οὐκ ἐκρατήσατέ με
But all of this has happened so that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted Jesus and ran away.56Τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῶσιν αἱ γραφαὶ τῶν προφητῶν Τότε οἱ μαθηταὶ πάντες ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἔφυγον
Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled.
Peter, however, followed him at a distance as far as the high priest's courtyard. He went inside and sat down with the servants to see how this would end.58 δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἕως τῆς αὐλῆς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἔσω ἐκάθητο μετὰ τῶν ὑπηρετῶν ἰδεῖν τὸ τέλος
Meanwhile, the high priests and the whole Council were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order to have him put to death.
But they couldn't find any, even though many false witnesses had come forward. At last two men came forward 60καὶ οὐχ εὗρον πολλῶν προσελθόντων ψευδομαρτύρων Ὕστερον δὲ προσελθόντες δύο
and stated, "This man said, 'I can destroy the sanctuary of God and rebuild it in three days.'"61εἶπαν Οὗτος ἔφη Δύναμαι καταλῦσαι τὸν ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τριῶν ἡμερῶν οἰκοδομῆσαι
At this, the high priest stood up and asked Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?" 62Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Οὐδὲν ἀποκρίνῃ τί οὗτοί σου καταμαρτυροῦσιν
But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest told him, "I command you by the living God to tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God!"63 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐσιώπα Καὶ ἀρχιερεὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐξορκίζω σε κατὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ζῶντος ἵνα ἡμῖν εἴπῃς εἰ σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Jesus told him, "You have said so. Nevertheless I tell you, from now on you will see 'the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power' and 'coming on the clouds of heaven.'" 64Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Σὺ εἶπας πλὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπ’ ἄρτι ὄψεσθε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενον ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως καὶ ἐρχόμενον ἐπὶ τῶν νεφελῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Listen! You yourselves have just heard the blasphemy! 65Τότε ἀρχιερεὺς διέρρηξεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ λέγων Ἐβλασφήμησεν τί ἔτι χρείαν ἔχομεν μαρτύρων ἴδε νῦν ἠκούσατε τὴν βλασφημίαν
What is your verdict?" They replied, "He deserves to die!"66τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ Οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπαν Ἔνοχος θανάτου ἐστίν
Then they spit in his face and hit him.
saying, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you?"68λέγοντες Προφήτευσον ἡμῖν Χριστέ τίς ἐστιν παίσας σε
Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant girl came up to him and said, "You, too, were with Jesus the Galilean."69 δὲ Πέτρος ἐκάθητο ἔξω ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ καὶ προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ μία παιδίσκη λέγουσα Καὶ σὺ ἦσθα μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Γαλιλαίου
But he denied it in front of them all. "I don't know what you're talking about!" he exclaimed.70 δὲ ἠρνήσατο ἔμπροσθεν πάντων λέγων Οὐκ οἶδα τί λέγεις
As he went out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, "This man was with Jesus from Nazareth." 71Ἐξελθόντα δὲ εἰς τὸν πυλῶνα εἶδεν αὐτὸν ἄλλη καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἐκεῖ Οὗτος ἦν μετὰ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου
Again he denied it and swore with an oath, "I don't know the man!"72Καὶ πάλιν ἠρνήσατο μετὰ ὅρκου ὅτι Οὐκ οἶδα τὸν ἄνθρωπον
After a little while, the people who were standing there came up and told Peter, "Obviously you're also one of them, because your accent gives you away."73Μετὰ μικρὸν δὲ προσελθόντες οἱ ἑστῶτες εἶπον τῷ Πέτρῳ Ἀληθῶς καὶ σὺ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶ καὶ γὰρ λαλιά σου δῆλόν σε ποιεῖ
Then he began to curse violently. "I don't know the man!" he swore solemnly. Just then a rooster crowed.
Peter remembered the words of Jesus when he said, "Before a rooster crows, you'll deny me three times." Then he went outside and cried bitterly.75Καὶ ἐμνήσθη Πέτρος τοῦ ῥήματος Ἰησοῦ εἰρηκότος ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι τρὶς ἀπαρνήσῃ με καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς
