Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
Mary was the woman who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was ill.
So the sisters sent word to Jesus and told him, "Lord, the one whom you love is ill."3ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι Κύριε ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ
But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness isn't meant to end in death. It's for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." 4Ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Αὕτη ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ’ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δι’ αὐτῆς
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
Yet, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was for two more days.6ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ἦν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας
After this, he told the disciples, "Let's go back to Judea."7ἔπειτα μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν πάλιν
The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death, and you are going back there again?"8Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Ῥαββί νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ
Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours in the day, aren't there? If anyone walks during the day he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 9Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὐχὶ δώδεκα ὧραί εἰσιν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ οὐ προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει
But if anyone walks at night he stumbles, because the light is not in him." 10ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ
These were the things he said. Then after this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm leaving to wake him up."11Ταῦτα εἶπεν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς Λάζαρος φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν
So the disciples told him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well." 12Εἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται
Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about resting or sleeping.13εἰρήκει δὲ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει
Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died. 14Τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν
For your sake I'm glad that I wasn't there, so that you may believe. But let's go to him."15καὶ χαίρω δι’ ὑμᾶς ἵνα πιστεύσητε ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν
Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, told his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too, so that we may die with him!"16Εἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away, 18ἦν δὲ ‹ἡ› Βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother.
As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home.20 οὖν Μάρθα ὡς ἤκουσεν ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἔρχεται ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ Μαριὰμ δὲ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἐκαθέζετο
Martha told Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 21Εἶπεν οὖν Μάρθα πρὸς ‹τὸν› Ἰησοῦν Κύριε εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἂν ἀπέθανεν ἀδελφός μου
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give it to you."22[ἀλλὰ] καὶ νῦν οἶδα ὅτι ὅσα ἂν αἰτήσῃ τὸν Θεὸν δώσει σοι Θεός
Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again."23Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἀναστήσεται ἀδελφός σου
Martha told him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."24Λέγει αὐτῷ Μάρθα Οἶδα ὅτι ἀναστήσεται ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The person who believes in me, even though he dies, will live. 25Εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀνάστασις καὶ ζωή πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ κἂν ἀποθάνῃ ζήσεται
Indeed, everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?"26καὶ πᾶς ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα πιστεύεις τοῦτο
"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world."27Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναί Κύριε ἐγὼ πεπίστευκα ὅτι σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐρχόμενος
When she had said this, she went away and called her sister Mary and told her privately, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you!"28Καὶ τοῦτο εἰποῦσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἐφώνησεν Μαριὰμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς λάθρᾳ εἰποῦσα Διδάσκαλος πάρεστιν καὶ φωνεῖ σε
As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
Now Jesus had not yet arrived at the village but was still at the place where Martha had met him.
When the Jewish leaders who had been with her, consoling her in the house, saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she had gone to the tomb to cry there.31οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι οἱ ὄντες μετ’ αὐτῆς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ καὶ παραμυθούμενοι αὐτήν ἰδόντες τὴν Μαριὰμ ὅτι ταχέως ἀνέστη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῇ δόξαντες ὅτι ὑπάγει εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἵνα κλαύσῃ ἐκεῖ
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet and told him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died."32 οὖν Μαριὰμ ὡς ἦλθεν ὅπου ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἔπεσεν αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς πόδας λέγουσα αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἄν μου ἀπέθανεν ἀδελφός
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was greatly troubled in spirit and deeply moved.
He asked, "Where have you put him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."34καὶ εἶπεν Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
Jesus burst into tears.35Ἐδάκρυσεν Ἰησοῦς
So the Jewish leaders said, "See how much he loved him!"36Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἴδε πῶς ἐφίλει αὐτόν
But some of them said, "Surely the one who opened the eyes of the blind man could have kept this man from dying, couldn't he?"37Τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπαν Οὐκ ἐδύνατο οὗτος ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὗτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ
Groaning deeply again, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying in front of it. 38Ἰησοῦς οὖν πάλιν ἐμβριμώμενος ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἔρχεται εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἦν δὲ σπήλαιον καὶ λίθος ἐπέκειτο ἐπ’ αὐτῷ
Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, told him, "Lord, there must be a stench by now, because he's been dead for four days."39λέγει Ἰησοῦς Ἄρατε τὸν λίθον Λέγει αὐτῷ ἀδελφὴ τοῦ τετελευτηκότος Μάρθα Κύριε ἤδη ὄζει τεταρταῖος γάρ ἐστιν
Jesus told her, "I told you that if you believed you would see God's glory, didn't I?" 40Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς ὄψῃ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. 41Ἦραν οὖν τὸν λίθον δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἦρεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἄνω καὶ εἶπεν Πάτερ εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι ἤκουσάς μου
I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me."42ἐγὼ δὲ ᾔδειν ὅτι πάντοτέ μου ἀκούεις ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον τὸν περιεστῶτα εἶπον ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας
After saying this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 43Καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐκραύγασεν Λάζαρε δεῦρο ἔξω
The man who had died came out, his hands and feet tied with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus told them, "Untie him, and let him go."44ἐξῆλθεν τεθνηκὼς δεδεμένος τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας κειρίαις καὶ ὄψις αὐτοῦ σουδαρίῳ περιεδέδετο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἄφετε αὐτὸν ὑπάγειν
Many of the Jews who had come with Mary and who had observed what Jesus did believed in him.
Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
So the high priests and the Pharisees assembled the Council and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. 47Συνήγαγον οὖν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον καὶ ἔλεγον Τί ποιοῦμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ποιεῖ σημεῖα
If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation."48ἐὰν ἀφῶμεν αὐτὸν οὕτως πάντες πιστεύσουσιν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἐλεύσονται οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ ἀροῦσιν ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν τόπον καὶ τὸ ἔθνος
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, told them, "You don't know anything! 49Εἷς δέ τις ἐξ αὐτῶν Καϊάφας ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε οὐδέν
You don't realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed." 50οὐδὲ λογίζεσθε ὅτι συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα εἷς ἄνθρωπος ἀποθάνῃ ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ ἔθνος ἀπόληται
Now he did not say this on his own initiative. As high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
and not only for the nation, but that he would also gather into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
So from that day on they resolved to put him to death.
As a result, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews. Instead, he went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness. There he remained with his disciples.54 οὖν Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι παρρησίᾳ περιεπάτει ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἀλλὰ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν χώραν ἐγγὺς τῆς ἐρήμου εἰς Ἐφραὶμ λεγομένην πόλιν κἀκεῖ ἔμεινεν μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν
Now the Jewish Passover was approaching, and before the Passover many people from the countryside went up to Jerusalem to purify themselves.
They kept looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? Surely he won't come to the festival, will he?" 56ἐζήτουν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔλεγον μετ’ ἀλλήλων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστηκότες Τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν
Now the high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where he was should tell them so that they could arrest him.57δεδώκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐντολὰς ἵνα ἐάν τις γνῷ ποῦ ἐστιν μηνύσῃ ὅπως πιάσωσιν αὐτόν
