Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.1Ἦν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν Λάζαρος ἀπὸ Βηθανίας ἐκ τῆς κώμης Μαρίας καὶ Μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)2ἦν δὲ Μαριὰμ ἀλείψασα τὸν Κύριον μύρῳ καὶ ἐκμάξασα τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς ἧς ἀδελφὸς Λάζαρος ἠσθένει
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.3ἀπέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσαι Κύριε ἴδε ὃν φιλεῖς ἀσθενεῖ
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.4Ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Αὕτη ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστιν πρὸς θάνατον ἀλλ’ ὑπὲρ τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ ἵνα δοξασθῇ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δι’ αὐτῆς
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.5Ἠγάπα δὲ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.6ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ἦν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας
Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.7ἔπειτα μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν πάλιν
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?8Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Ῥαββί νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.9Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς Οὐχὶ δώδεκα ὧραί εἰσιν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ οὐ προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.10ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτί προσκόπτει ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.11Ταῦτα εἶπεν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτοῖς Λάζαρος φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.12Εἶπαν οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ κεκοίμηται σωθήσεται
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.13εἰρήκει δὲ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.14Τότε οὖν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς παρρησίᾳ Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.15καὶ χαίρω δι’ ὑμᾶς ἵνα πιστεύσητε ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ ἀλλὰ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.16Εἶπεν οὖν Θωμᾶς λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς Ἄγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.17Ἐλθὼν οὖν Ἰησοῦς εὗρεν αὐτὸν τέσσαρας ἤδη ἡμέρας ἔχοντα ἐν τῷ μνημείῳ
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:18ἦν δὲ ‹ἡ› Βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.19πολλοὶ δὲ ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐληλύθεισαν πρὸς τὴν Μάρθαν καὶ Μαριὰμ ἵνα παραμυθήσωνται αὐτὰς περὶ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.20 οὖν Μάρθα ὡς ἤκουσεν ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ἔρχεται ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ Μαριὰμ δὲ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἐκαθέζετο
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.21Εἶπεν οὖν Μάρθα πρὸς ‹τὸν› Ἰησοῦν Κύριε εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἂν ἀπέθανεν ἀδελφός μου
But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.22[ἀλλὰ] καὶ νῦν οἶδα ὅτι ὅσα ἂν αἰτήσῃ τὸν Θεὸν δώσει σοι Θεός
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.23Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἀναστήσεται ἀδελφός σου
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.24Λέγει αὐτῷ Μάρθα Οἶδα ὅτι ἀναστήσεται ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:25Εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀνάστασις καὶ ζωή πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ κἂν ἀποθάνῃ ζήσεται
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?26καὶ πᾶς ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα πιστεύεις τοῦτο
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.27Λέγει αὐτῷ Ναί Κύριε ἐγὼ πεπίστευκα ὅτι σὺ εἶ Χριστὸς Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐρχόμενος
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.28Καὶ τοῦτο εἰποῦσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἐφώνησεν Μαριὰμ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς λάθρᾳ εἰποῦσα Διδάσκαλος πάρεστιν καὶ φωνεῖ σε
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.29ἐκείνη δὲ ὡς ἤκουσεν ἠγέρθη* ταχὺ καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτόν
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.30Οὔπω δὲ ἐληλύθει Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν κώμην ἀλλ’ ἦν ἔτι ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ Μάρθα
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.31οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι οἱ ὄντες μετ’ αὐτῆς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ καὶ παραμυθούμενοι αὐτήν ἰδόντες τὴν Μαριὰμ ὅτι ταχέως ἀνέστη καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῇ δόξαντες ὅτι ὑπάγει εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἵνα κλαύσῃ ἐκεῖ
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.32 οὖν Μαριὰμ ὡς ἦλθεν ὅπου ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἰδοῦσα αὐτὸν ἔπεσεν αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς πόδας λέγουσα αὐτῷ Κύριε εἰ ἦς ὧδε οὐκ ἄν μου ἀπέθανεν ἀδελφός
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,33Ἰησοῦς οὖν ὡς εἶδεν αὐτὴν κλαίουσαν καὶ τοὺς συνελθόντας αὐτῇ Ἰουδαίους κλαίοντας ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτόν
And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.34καὶ εἶπεν Ποῦ τεθείκατε αὐτόν Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε
Jesus wept.35Ἐδάκρυσεν Ἰησοῦς
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!36Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἴδε πῶς ἐφίλει αὐτόν
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?37Τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπαν Οὐκ ἐδύνατο οὗτος ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὗτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.38Ἰησοῦς οὖν πάλιν ἐμβριμώμενος ἐν ἑαυτῷ ἔρχεται εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον ἦν δὲ σπήλαιον καὶ λίθος ἐπέκειτο ἐπ’ αὐτῷ
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.39λέγει Ἰησοῦς Ἄρατε τὸν λίθον Λέγει αὐτῷ ἀδελφὴ τοῦ τετελευτηκότος Μάρθα Κύριε ἤδη ὄζει τεταρταῖος γάρ ἐστιν
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?40Λέγει αὐτῇ Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ εἶπόν σοι ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς ὄψῃ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.41Ἦραν οὖν τὸν λίθον δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἦρεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἄνω καὶ εἶπεν Πάτερ εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι ἤκουσάς μου
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.42ἐγὼ δὲ ᾔδειν ὅτι πάντοτέ μου ἀκούεις ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον τὸν περιεστῶτα εἶπον ἵνα πιστεύσωσιν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.43Καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐκραύγασεν Λάζαρε δεῦρο ἔξω
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.44ἐξῆλθεν τεθνηκὼς δεδεμένος τοὺς πόδας καὶ τὰς χεῖρας κειρίαις καὶ ὄψις αὐτοῦ σουδαρίῳ περιεδέδετο Λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Λύσατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἄφετε αὐτὸν ὑπάγειν
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.45Πολλοὶ οὖν ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων οἱ ἐλθόντες πρὸς τὴν Μαριὰμ καὶ θεασάμενοι ἃ* ἐποίησεν ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν
But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.46τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπῆλθον πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.47Συνήγαγον οὖν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συνέδριον καὶ ἔλεγον Τί ποιοῦμεν ὅτι οὗτος ἄνθρωπος πολλὰ ποιεῖ σημεῖα
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.48ἐὰν ἀφῶμεν αὐτὸν οὕτως πάντες πιστεύσουσιν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἐλεύσονται οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι καὶ ἀροῦσιν ἡμῶν καὶ τὸν τόπον καὶ τὸ ἔθνος
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,49Εἷς δέ τις ἐξ αὐτῶν Καϊάφας ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε οὐδέν
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.50οὐδὲ λογίζεσθε ὅτι συμφέρει ὑμῖν ἵνα εἷς ἄνθρωπος ἀποθάνῃ ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ μὴ ὅλον τὸ ἔθνος ἀπόληται
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;51Τοῦτο δὲ ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εἶπεν ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου ἐπροφήτευσεν ὅτι ἔμελλεν Ἰησοῦς ἀποθνήσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.52καὶ οὐχ ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους μόνον ἀλλ’ ἵνα καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ διεσκορπισμένα συναγάγῃ εἰς ἕν
Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.53Ἀπ’ ἐκείνης οὖν τῆς ἡμέρας ἐβουλεύσαντο ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτόν
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.54 οὖν Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι παρρησίᾳ περιεπάτει ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἀλλὰ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν εἰς τὴν χώραν ἐγγὺς τῆς ἐρήμου εἰς Ἐφραὶμ λεγομένην πόλιν κἀκεῖ ἔμεινεν μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν
And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.55Ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς τὸ πάσχα τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἀνέβησαν πολλοὶ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ἐκ τῆς χώρας πρὸ τοῦ πάσχα ἵνα ἁγνίσωσιν ἑαυτούς
Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?56ἐζήτουν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔλεγον μετ’ ἀλλήλων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστηκότες Τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.57δεδώκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἐντολὰς ἵνα ἐάν τις γνῷ ποῦ ἐστιν μηνύσῃ ὅπως πιάσωσιν αὐτόν
