David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1And David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. My stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds.
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13From the brightness of His presence coals of fire blazed forth.
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes.
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33God is my strong fortress and He makes my way clear.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36You have given me Your shield of salvation, and Your gentleness exalts me.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way.
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who hated me.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42They looked, but there was no one to save them—to the LORD, but He did not answer.
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43I ground them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and trampled them like mud in the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44You have delivered me from the strife of my people; You have preserved me as the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me.
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted—
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
