David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2He said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior-- from violent people you save me.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4"I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7"In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12He made darkness his canopy around him-- the dark rain clouds of the sky.
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth.
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils.
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17"He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21"The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees.
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26"To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31"As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38"I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42They cried for help, but there was no one to save them-- to the LORD, but he did not answer.
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44"You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me,
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47"The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior!
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51"He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever."
