David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul.
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2He sang: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5“The waves of death overwhelmed me; floods of destruction swept over me.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8“Then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the heavens shook; they quaked because of his anger.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9Smoke poured from his nostrils; fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach with dense rain clouds.
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13A great brightness shone around him, and burning coals blazed forth.
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15He shot arrows and scattered his enemies; his lightning flashed, and they were confused.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16Then at the command of the LORD, at the blast of his breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen, and the foundations of the earth were laid bare.
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17“He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the LORD supported me.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21The LORD rewarded me for doing right; he restored me because of my innocence.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23I have followed all his regulations; I have never abandoned his decrees.
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25The LORD rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26“To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity.
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28You rescue the humble, but your eyes watch the proud and humiliate them.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29O LORD, you are my lamp. The LORD lights up my darkness.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31“God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32For who is God except the LORD? Who but our God is a solid rock?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33God is my strong fortress, and he makes my way perfect.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36You have given me your shield of victory; your help has made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping.
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38“I chased my enemies and destroyed them; I did not stop until they were conquered.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39I consumed them; I struck them down so they did not get up; they fell beneath my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42They looked for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the LORD, but he refused to answer.
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43I ground them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trampled them in the gutter like dirt.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44“You gave me victory over my accusers. You preserved me as the ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me.
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45Foreign nations cringe before me; as soon as they hear of me, they submit.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47“The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted!
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48He is the God who pays back those who harm me; he brings down the nations under me
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49and delivers me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies; you save me from violent opponents.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50For this, O LORD, I will praise you among the nations; I will sing praises to your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51You give great victories to your king; you show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever.”
