David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
