David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1And David spoke the words of this song to the LORD in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2He said, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4"I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5"For the waves of death encompassed me; The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me;
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7"In my distress I called upon the LORD, Yes, I cried to my God; And from His temple He heard my voice, And my cry for help came into His ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8"Then the earth shook and quaked, The foundations of heaven were trembling And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9"Smoke went up out of His nostrils, Fire from His mouth devoured; Coals were kindled by it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10"He bowed the heavens also, and came down With thick darkness under His feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11"And He rode on a cherub and flew; And He appeared on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12"And He made darkness canopies around Him, A mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky.
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13"From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled.
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14"The LORD thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice.
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15"And He sent out arrows, and scattered them, Lightning, and routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16"Then the channels of the sea appeared, The foundations of the world were laid bare By the rebuke of the LORD, At the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17"He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18"He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19"They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20"He also brought me forth into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21"The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22"For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not acted wickedly against my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23"For all His ordinances were before me, And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24"I was also blameless toward Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25"Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness before His eyes.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26"With the kind You show Yourself kind, With the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27With the pure You show Yourself pure, And with the perverted You show Yourself astute.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28"And You save an afflicted people; But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You abase.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29"For You are my lamp, O LORD; And the LORD illumines my darkness.
Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30"For by You I can run upon a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31"As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the LORD is tested; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32"For who is God, besides the LORD? And who is a rock, besides our God?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33"God is my strong fortress; And He sets the blameless in His way.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34"He makes my feet like hinds' feet, And sets me on my high places.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35"He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36"You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your help makes me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37"You enlarge my steps under me, And my feet have not slipped.
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38"I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, And I did not turn back until they were consumed.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39"And I have devoured them and shattered them, so that they did not rise; And they fell under my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40"For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41"You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, And I destroyed those who hated me.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42"They looked, but there was none to save; Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them.
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43"Then I pulverized them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and stamped them as the mire of the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44"You have also delivered me from the contentions of my people; You have kept me as head of the nations; A people whom I have not known serve me.
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45"Foreigners pretend obedience to me; As soon as they hear, they obey me.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46"Foreigners lose heart, And come trembling out of their fortresses.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47"The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation,
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48The God who executes vengeance for me, And brings down peoples under me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49Who also brings me out from my enemies; You even lift me above those who rise up against me; You rescue me from the violent man.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50"Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the nations, And I will sing praises to Your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51"He is a tower of deliverance to His king, And shows lovingkindness to His anointed, To David and his descendants forever."
