David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1David composed the words of this song to the LORD the very day the LORD delivered him from the domination of all of his enemies, including from Saul's hands.
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2This is what he said: LORD, you are my stone stronghold and my fortified place; you are continuously delivering me.
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3He is my God, my strong stone— in him I will find my refuge— my shield, the strength of my salvation, my high tower, my way of escape, and the one who is saving me. You will save me from violence.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4As I am praising him, I will call out to the LORD, and I will be saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5Because deadly breakers engulfed me, while torrents of abuse from the ungodly overwhelmed me.
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6Binding ropes from Sheol entangled me while lethal snares hindered me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7I cried out to the LORD in the middle of my troubles; I cried out to my God. He listened to my voice from his sanctuary, and my call for help was heard.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8Just then the earth shook and trembled! The foundations of heaven reeled and quaked because the LORD was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9Smoke poured out of his nostrils, and fire from his mouth kindling coals to flame by it.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10He deformed heaven itself as he descended. Thick darkness enveloped his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind!
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12The darkness around him was his canopies— amassed water was his overhanging clouds!
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13From the shining light that was his presence coals of fire blazed into flame!
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14The LORD roared from heaven! The Most High let his voice be heard!
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15He launched his arrows and scattered them— his lightning routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16The currents of the sea were revealed and the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD and at the blazing breath from his nostrils!
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17He sent for me from on high! He grabbed hold of me, drawing me out of deep water.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18He rescued me from my strong enemy— from those who hate me continually, since they were stronger than I.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19They confronted me when I was in trouble, but the LORD remained my support!
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20He brought me to a wide open area, rescuing me because he was pleased with me!
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness, rewarding me according to the degree of my innocence,
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22because I have kept the LORD's way— I haven't willfully abandoned my God—
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23and because all of his decrees remain in my thoughts, I have not turned aside from his statutes,
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24I have been innocent before him, and I've kept myself from incurring guilt.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25The Lord has repaid me according to my righteousness, that is, according to my clean standing as he looks at me.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26In the company of the gracious you demonstrate your gracious love. In the company of the blamelessly valiant you demonstrate your blamelessness.
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27In the company of the pure you demonstrate your purity. In the company of the perverted you will appear to be perverse.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28You save the nation who is humble but your eyes watch the proud, to bring them down.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29For you are my lamp, LORD, the LORD who illuminates my darkness.
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30By you I devastate armies, by my God I scale walls.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31This God! His way is perfect! What the LORD declares proves true. He shields everyone who flees for protection to him!
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32For who is God apart from the LORD? And who is a Rock, apart from our God?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33This God is my strong place of valor! He has made my life blameless.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34He has made my feet like those of a deer, setting me secure on his high places!
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35He has trained my hands for battle readiness— I can bend a bow made out of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36He has equipped me with the shield that is your salvation, Your gentleness has made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37You've made room beneath me for my footsteps, and my feet didn't slip.
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38I pursued my enemies and conquered them; I didn't return until they were consumed.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39I devoured them, striking them down until they could not get up again. They fell beneath my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40You strengthened me with valor sufficient for the battle; you made those who rebelled against me fall beneath me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41You made my enemies turn and run— that is, those who hate me— and I destroyed them!
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42They looked around, but there was no one to save them — they looked to the LORD, but he paid no attention!
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43I pulverized them to powder, like the dust of the earth; I crushed them, stomping on them like mud on a street.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44You delivered me from civil war among my own people. You preserved me as head of the nations. People whom I had never known served me!
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45Foreigners came cringing to me; they obeyed as soon as they heard me.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46Foreigners lost their courage, coming trembling from their strongholds.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock, and may my God be exalted, the Rock who is my salvation!
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48The God who keeps on avenging me, subjugating people beneath me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49delivering me from my enemies. You exalted me above those who rebelled against me, delivering me from violent men.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50Because of all of this I will praise you among the nations, LORD, and I will sing praises to your name!
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51Great is the salvation he brings to his king, showing gracious love to his anointed, to David and to his offspring forever.
