"If you indeed obey the LORD your God and are careful to observe all his commandments I am giving you today, the LORD your God will elevate you above all the nations of the earth.1"Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
All these blessings will come to you in abundance if you obey the LORD your God:2"All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God:
You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the field.3"Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.
Your children will be blessed, as well as the produce of your soil, the offspring of your livestock, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks.4"Blessed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your beasts, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock.
Your basket and your mixing bowl will be blessed.5"Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.6"Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
The LORD will cause your enemies who attack you to be struck down before you; they will attack you from one direction but flee from you in seven different directions.7"The LORD shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you; they will come out against you one way and will flee before you seven ways.
The LORD will decree blessing for you with respect to your barns and in everything you do--yes, he will bless you in the land he is giving you.8"The LORD will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
The LORD will designate you as his holy people just as he promised you, if you keep his commandments and obey him.9"The LORD will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in His ways.
Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you belong to the LORD, and they will respect you.10"So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will be afraid of you.
The LORD will greatly multiply your children, the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your soil in the land which he promised your ancestors he would give you.11"The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your beast and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.
The LORD will open for you his good treasure house, the heavens, to give you rain for the land in its season and to bless all you do; you will lend to many nations but you will not borrow from any.12"The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always end up at the top and not at the bottom, if you obey his commandments which I am urging you today to be careful to do.13"The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully,
But you must not turn away from all the commandments I am giving you today, to either the right or left, nor pursue other gods and worship them. 14and do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
"But if you ignore the LORD your God and are not careful to keep all his commandments and statutes I am giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you in full force:15"But it shall come about, if you do not obey the LORD your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the field.16"Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country.
Your basket and your mixing bowl will be cursed.17"Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
Your children will be cursed, as well as the produce of your soil, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks.18"Cursed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock.
You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. 19"Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.
"The LORD will send on you a curse, confusing you and opposing you in everything you undertake until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of the evil of your deeds, in that you have forsaken me.20"The LORD will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me.
The LORD will plague you with deadly diseases until he has completely removed you from the land you are about to possess.21"The LORD will make the pestilence cling to you until He has consumed you from the land where you are entering to possess it.
He will afflict you with weakness, fever, inflammation, infection, sword, blight, and mildew; these will attack you until you perish.22"The LORD will smite you with consumption and with fever and with inflammation and with fiery heat and with the sword and with blight and with mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish.
The sky above your heads will be bronze and the earth beneath you iron.23"The heaven which is over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you, iron.
The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust; it will come down on you from the sky until you are destroyed. 24"The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.
"The LORD will allow you to be struck down before your enemies; you will attack them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions and will become an object of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.25"The LORD shall cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways before them, and you will be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
Your carcasses will be food for every bird of the sky and wild animal of the earth, and there will be no one to chase them off.26"Your carcasses will be food to all birds of the sky and to the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away.
The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, eczema, and scabies, all of which cannot be healed.27"The LORD will smite you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scab and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed.
The LORD will also subject you to madness, blindness, and confusion of mind.28"The LORD will smite you with madness and with blindness and with bewilderment of heart;
You will feel your way along at noon like the blind person does in darkness and you will not succeed in anything you do; you will be constantly oppressed and continually robbed, with no one to save you.29and you will grope at noon, as the blind man gropes in darkness, and you will not prosper in your ways; but you shall only be oppressed and robbed continually, with none to save you.
You will be engaged to a woman and another man will rape her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not even begin to use it.30"You shall betroth a wife, but another man will violate her; you shall build a house, but you will not live in it; you shall plant a vineyard, but you will not use its fruit.
Your ox will be slaughtered before your very eyes but you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be stolen from you as you watch and will not be returned to you. Your flock of sheep will be given to your enemies and there will be no one to save you.31"Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat of it; your donkey shall be torn away from you, and will not be restored to you; your sheep shall be given to your enemies, and you will have none to save you.
Your sons and daughters will be given to another people while you look on in vain all day, and you will be powerless to do anything about it.32"Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and yearn for them continually; but there will be nothing you can do.
As for the produce of your land and all your labor, a people you do not know will consume it, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.33"A people whom you do not know shall eat up the produce of your ground and all your labors, and you will never be anything but oppressed and crushed continually.
You will go insane from seeing all this.34"You shall be driven mad by the sight of what you see.
The LORD will afflict you in your knees and on your legs with painful, incurable boils--from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.35"The LORD will strike you on the knees and legs with sore boils, from which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head.
The LORD will force you and your king whom you will appoint over you to go away to a people whom you and your ancestors have not known, and you will serve other gods of wood and stone there.36"The LORD will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone.
You will become an occasion of horror, a proverb, and an object of ridicule to all the peoples to whom the LORD will drive you. 37"You shall become a horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all the people where the LORD drives you.
"You will take much seed to the field but gather little harvest, because locusts will consume it.38"You shall bring out much seed to the field but you will gather in little, for the locust will consume it.
You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them.39"You shall plant and cultivate vineyards, but you will neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm will devour them.
You will have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with olive oil, because the olives will drop off the trees while still unripe.40"You shall have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off.
You will bear sons and daughters but not keep them, because they will be taken into captivity.41"You shall have sons and daughters but they will not be yours, for they will go into captivity.
Whirring locusts will take over every tree and all the produce of your soil.42"The cricket shall possess all your trees and the produce of your ground.
The foreigners who reside among you will become higher and higher over you and you will become lower and lower.43"The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you will go down lower and lower.
They will lend to you but you will not lend to them; they will become the head and you will become the tail! 44"He shall lend to you, but you will not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you will be the tail.
All these curses will fall on you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the LORD your God by keeping his commandments and statutes that he has given you.45"So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.
These curses will be a perpetual sign and wonder with reference to you and your descendants. 46"They shall become a sign and a wonder on you and your descendants forever.
"Because you have not served the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly with the abundance of everything you have,47"Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things;
instead in hunger, thirst, nakedness, and poverty you will serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you. They will place an iron yoke on your neck until they have destroyed you.48therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.
The LORD will raise up a distant nation against you, one from the other side of the earth as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand,49"The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you shall not understand,
a nation of stern appearance that will have no regard for the elderly or pity for the young.50a nation of fierce countenance who will have no respect for the old, nor show favor to the young.
They will devour the offspring of your livestock and the produce of your soil until you are destroyed. They will not leave you with any grain, new wine, olive oil, calves of your herds, or lambs of your flocks until they have destroyed you.51"Moreover, it shall eat the offspring of your herd and the produce of your ground until you are destroyed, who also leaves you no grain, new wine, or oil, nor the increase of your herd or the young of your flock until they have caused you to perish.
They will besiege all of your villages until all of your high and fortified walls collapse--those in which you put your confidence throughout the land. They will besiege all your villages throughout the land the LORD your God has given you.52"It shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls in which you trusted come down throughout your land, and it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout your land which the LORD your God has given you.
You will then eat your own offspring, the flesh of the sons and daughters the LORD your God has given you, because of the severity of the siege by which your enemies will constrict you.53"Then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the LORD your God has given you, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you.
The man among you who is by nature tender and sensitive will turn against his brother, his beloved wife, and his remaining children.54"The man who is refined and very delicate among you shall be hostile toward his brother and toward the wife he cherishes and toward the rest of his children who remain,
He will withhold from all of them his children's flesh that he is eating (since there is nothing else left), because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict you in your villages.55so that he will not give even one of them any of the flesh of his children which he will eat, since he has nothing else left, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you in all your towns.
Likewise, the most tender and delicate of your women, who would never think of putting even the sole of her foot on the ground because of her daintiness, will turn against her beloved husband, her sons and daughters,56"The refined and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground for delicateness and refinement, shall be hostile toward the husband she cherishes and toward her son and daughter,
and will secretly eat her afterbirth and her newborn children (since she has nothing else), because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict you in your villages. 57and toward her afterbirth which issues from between her legs and toward her children whom she bears; for she will eat them secretly for lack of anything else, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you in your towns.
"If you refuse to obey all the words of this law, the things written in this scroll, and refuse to fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God,58"If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law which are written in this book, to fear this honored and awesome name, the LORD your God,
then the LORD will increase your punishments and those of your descendants--great and long-lasting afflictions and severe, enduring illnesses.59then the LORD will bring extraordinary plagues on you and your descendants, even severe and lasting plagues, and miserable and chronic sicknesses.
He will infect you with all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will persistently afflict you.60"He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt of which you were afraid, and they will cling to you.
Moreover, the LORD will bring upon you every kind of sickness and plague not mentioned in this scroll of commandments, until you have perished.61"Also every sickness and every plague which, not written in the book of this law, the LORD will bring on you until you are destroyed.
There will be very few of you left, though at one time you were as numerous as the stars in the sky, because you will have disobeyed the LORD your God.62"Then you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, because you did not obey the LORD your God.
This is what will happen: Just as the LORD delighted to do good for you and make you numerous, he will take delight in destroying and decimating you. You will be uprooted from the land you are about to possess.63"It shall come about that as the LORD delighted over you to prosper you, and multiply you, so the LORD will delight over you to make you perish and destroy you; and you will be torn from the land where you are entering to possess it.
The LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods of wood and stone.64"Moreover, the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, which you or your fathers have not known.
Among those nations you will have no rest nor will there be a place of peaceful rest for the soles of your feet, for there the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a spirit of despair.65"Among those nations you shall find no rest, and there will be no resting place for the sole of your foot; but there the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul.
Your life will hang in doubt before you; you will be terrified by night and day and will have no certainty of surviving from one day to the next.66"So your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you will be in dread night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life.
In the morning you will say, 'If only it were evening!' And in the evening you will say, 'I wish it were morning!' because of the things you will fear and the things you will see.67"In the morning you shall say, 'Would that it were evening!' And at evening you shall say, 'Would that it were morning!' because of the dread of your heart which you dread, and for the sight of your eyes which you will see.
Then the LORD will make you return to Egypt by ship, over a route I said to you that you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you." 68"The LORD will bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way about which I spoke to you, 'You will never see it again!' And there you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer."
