So they came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.1So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes.
Just as Jesus was getting out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs and met him.2When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him.
He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.3This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain.
For his hands and feet had often been bound with chains and shackles, but he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.4Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
Each night and every day among the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out and cut himself with stones.5Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him.6When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.
Then he cried out with a loud voice, "Leave me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God! I implore you by God--do not torment me!"7With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!”
(For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of that man, you unclean spirit!")8For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”
Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "My name is Legion, for we are many."9Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”
He begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the region.10Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place.
There on the hillside, a great herd of pigs was feeding.11There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby.
And the demonic spirits begged him, "Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them."12“Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.”
Jesus gave them permission. So the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, and about two thousand were drowned in the lake. 13So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.
Now the herdsmen ran off and spread the news in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.14The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened.
They came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind--the one who had the "Legion"--and they were afraid.15A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.
Those who had seen what had happened to the demon-possessed man reported it, and they also told about the pigs.16Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs.
Then they asked Jesus to leave their region.17And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone.
As he was getting into the boat the man who had been demon-possessed asked if he could go with him.18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him.
But Jesus did not permit him to do so. Instead, he said to him, "Go to your home and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you, that he had mercy on you."19But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.”
So he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and all were amazed. 20So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. Jesus Heals in Response to Faith
When Jesus had crossed again in a boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was by the sea.21Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore.
Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came up, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.22Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet,
He asked him urgently, "My little daughter is near death. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be healed and live."23pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.”
Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around him. 24Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him.
Now a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years.25A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding.
She had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet instead of getting better, she grew worse.26She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse.
When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,27She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe.
for she kept saying, "If only I touch his clothes, I will be healed."28For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.”
At once the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.29Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
Jesus knew at once that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?"30Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?”
His disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing against you and you say, 'Who touched me?'"31His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
But he looked around to see who had done it.32But he kept on looking around to see who had done it.
Then the woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.33Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease." 34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”
While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler's house saying, "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?"35While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”
But Jesus, paying no attention to what was said, told the synagogue ruler, "Do not be afraid; just believe."36But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”
He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.37Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James).
They came to the house of the synagogue ruler where he saw noisy confusion and people weeping and wailing loudly.38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing.
When he entered he said to them, "Why are you distressed and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”
And they began making fun of him. But he put them all outside and he took the child's father and mother and his own companions and went into the room where the child was.40The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.
Then, gently taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up."41Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!”
The girl got up at once and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). They were completely astonished at this.42And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.
He strictly ordered that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat. 43Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat.
