They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.1And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.2And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.3Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.4Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.5And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.6But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name don't torture me!"7And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you impure spirit!"8For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."9And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.10And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.11Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."12And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.13And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.14And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.15And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well.16And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.17And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.18And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."19Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.20And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.21And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.22And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
He pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."23And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.24And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.25And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.26And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,27When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."28For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"30And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' "31And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.32And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.33But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."34And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher anymore?"35While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, "Don't be afraid; just believe."36As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.37And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.38And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."39And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.40And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").41And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.42And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.43And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
