The Second Passover
(Exodus 12:1–13)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) בְמִדְבַּר־ (in the Wilderness) סִ֠ינַי (of Sinai), בַּשָּׁנָ֨ה (the year) הַשֵּׁנִ֜ית (second) לְצֵאתָ֨ם (after they had come out) מֵאֶ֧רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt), בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ (in the month) הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן (the first), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  וְיַעֲשׂ֧וּ (And let keep) בְנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) הַפָּ֖סַח (the Passover) בְּמוֹעֲדֽוֹ׃ (at its appointed time). 3  בְּאַרְבָּעָ֣ה (On four) עָשָֽׂר־ (and tenth) י֠וֹם (the day) בַּחֹ֨דֶשׁ (of the month) הַזֶּ֜ה (this), בֵּ֧ין (between) הָֽעֲרְבַּ֛יִם (the evenings), תַּעֲשׂ֥וּ (you⁺ shall keep) אֹת֖וֹ (it) בְּמוֹעֲד֑וֹ (at its appointed time). כְּכָל־ (According to all) חֻקֹּתָ֥יו (its statutes) וּכְכָל־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטָ֖יו (ordinances) תַּעֲשׂ֥וּ (you⁺ shall keep) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (it).

4  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לַעֲשֹׂ֥ת (that they should keep) הַפָּֽסַח׃ (the Passover). 5  וַיַּעֲשׂ֣וּ (And they kept) אֶת־ (-) הַפֶּ֡סַח (the Passover) בָּרִאשׁ֡וֹן (in the first month), בְּאַרְבָּעָה֩ (on the four) עָשָׂ֨ר (and tenth) י֥וֹם (day) לַחֹ֛דֶשׁ (of the month), בֵּ֥ין (between) הָעַרְבַּ֖יִם (the evenings), בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר (in the Wilderness) סִינָ֑י (of Sinai); כְּ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֤ה (commanded) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), כֵּ֥ן (so) עָשׂ֖וּ (did) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

6  וַיְהִ֣י (And there were) אֲנָשִׁ֗ים (men) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) הָי֤וּ (were) טְמֵאִים֙ (defiled) לְנֶ֣פֶשׁ (by the body) אָדָ֔ם (of a man), וְלֹא־ (so that not) יָכְל֥וּ (they could) לַעֲשֹׂת־ (they could keep) הַפֶּ֖סַח (the Passover) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֑וּא (that). וַֽיִּקְרְב֞וּ (And they came) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) וְלִפְנֵ֥י (and) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron) בַּיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַהֽוּא׃ (that). 7  וַ֠יֹּאמְרוּ (And said) הָאֲנָשִׁ֤ים (the men) הָהֵ֙מָּה֙ (those) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אֲנַ֥חְנוּ (We) טְמֵאִ֖ים (are defiled) לְנֶ֣פֶשׁ (by the body) אָדָ֑ם (of a man); לָ֣מָּה (why) נִגָּרַ֗ע (are we restrained) לְבִלְתִּ֨י (from) הַקְרִ֜ב (presenting) אֶת־ (-) קָרְבַּ֤ן (the offering) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) בְּמֹ֣עֲד֔וֹ (at its appointed time), בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)?

8  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵהֶ֖ם (to them) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (Moses), עִמְד֣וּ (Stand still), וְאֶשְׁמְעָ֔ה (that I may hear) מַה־ (what) יְצַוֶּ֥ה (commands) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לָכֶֽם׃פ (concerning you⁺).

9  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 10  דַּבֵּ֛ר (Speak) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), אִ֣ישׁ (Any) אִ֣ישׁ (man) כִּי־ (if) יִהְיֶֽה־ (he is) טָמֵ֣א׀ (unclean) לָנֶ֡פֶשׁ (by a body), אוֹ֩ (or) בְדֶ֨רֶךְ (on a journey) רְחֹקָ֜הׄ (far away) לָכֶ֗ם (from you⁺) א֚וֹ (or) לְדֹרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ posterity), וְעָ֥שָׂה (and he may still keep) פֶ֖סַח (the Passover) לַיהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 11  בַּחֹ֨דֶשׁ (In the month) הַשֵּׁנִ֜י (second), בְּאַרְבָּעָ֨ה (on the four) עָשָׂ֥ר (and tenth) י֛וֹם (day) בֵּ֥ין (between) הָעַרְבַּ֖יִם (the evenings) יַעֲשׂ֣וּ (they may keep) אֹת֑וֹ (it); עַל־ (with) מַצּ֥וֹת (unleavened bread) וּמְרֹרִ֖ים (and bitter herbs) יֹאכְלֻֽהוּ׃ (they shall eat it). 12  לֹֽא־ (None) יַשְׁאִ֤ירוּ (they shall leave) מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (of it) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֔קֶר (morning), וְעֶ֖צֶם (and a bone) לֹ֣א (not) יִשְׁבְּרוּ־ (they shall break) ב֑וֹ (of it). כְּכָל־ (According to all) חֻקַּ֥ת (the ordinances) הַפֶּ֖סַח (of the Passover) יַעֲשׂ֥וּ (they shall keep) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (it).

13  וְהָאִישׁ֩ (And the man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) ה֨וּא (is) טָה֜וֹר (clean), וּבְדֶ֣רֶךְ (and on a journey) לֹא־ (not) הָיָ֗ה (is), וְחָדַל֙ (and ceases) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to keep) הַפֶּ֔סַח (the Passover), וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה (and shall be cut off) הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ (person) הַהִ֖וא (that) מֵֽעַמֶּ֑יהָ (from among his people), כִּ֣י׀ (because) קָרְבַּ֣ן (the offering) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) לֹ֤א (not) הִקְרִיב֙ (he did bring) בְּמֹ֣עֲד֔וֹ (at its appointed time). חֶטְא֥וֹ (His sin) יִשָּׂ֖א (shall bear) הָאִ֥ישׁ (the man) הַהֽוּא׃ (that).

14  וְכִֽי־ (And if) יָג֨וּר (sojourns) אִתְּכֶ֜ם (with you⁺) גֵּ֗ר (a sojourner) וְעָ֤שָֽׂה (and would keep) פֶ֙סַח֙ (the Passover) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), כְּחֻקַּ֥ת (according to the statute) הַפֶּ֛סַח (of the Passover), וּכְמִשְׁפָּט֖וֹ (and according to its ordinance) כֵּ֣ן (so) יַעֲשֶׂ֑ה (he must do); חֻקָּ֤ה (ordinance) אַחַת֙ (one) יִהְיֶ֣ה (you shall have) לָכֶ֔ם (unto you⁺) וְלַגֵּ֖ר (and unto the sojourner) וּלְאֶזְרַ֥ח (and unto the native) הָאָֽרֶץ׃פ (of the land).

15  וּבְיוֹם֙ (And on the day) הָקִ֣ים (that was raised up) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן (the tabernacle), כִּסָּ֤ה (covered) הֶֽעָנָן֙ (the cloud) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן (the tabernacle), לְאֹ֖הֶל (the Tent) הָעֵדֻ֑ת (of the Testimony), וּבָעֶ֜רֶב (and from the evening) יִהְיֶ֧ה (it was) עַֽל־ (above) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֛ן (the tabernacle) כְּמַרְאֵה־ (like the appearance) אֵ֖שׁ (of fire), עַד־ (until) בֹּֽקֶר׃ (morning). 16  כֵּ֚ן (So) יִהְיֶ֣ה (it was) תָמִ֔יד (continually): הֶעָנָ֖ן (The cloud) יְכַסֶּ֑נּוּ (covered it), וּמַרְאֵה־ (then the appearance) אֵ֖שׁ (of fire) לָֽיְלָה׃ (by night). 17  וּלְפִ֞י (And Whenever) הֵעָלֹ֤ת (was taken up) הֶֽעָנָן֙ (the cloud) מֵעַ֣ל (from above) הָאֹ֔הֶל (the tabernacle), וְאַ֣חֲרֵי־ (and after) כֵ֔ן (that) יִסְע֖וּ (would journey) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). וּבִמְק֗וֹם (And in the place) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (where) יִשְׁכָּן־ (settled) שָׁם֙ (there) הֶֽעָנָ֔ן (the cloud), שָׁ֥ם (there) יַחֲנ֖וּ (would encamp) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 18  עַל־ (At) פִּ֣י (the mouth) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) יִסְעוּ֙ (would journey) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְעַל־ (and at) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) יַחֲנ֑וּ (they would camp). כָּל־ (All) יְמֵ֗י (the days) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִשְׁכֹּ֧ן (remained) הֶעָנָ֛ן (the cloud) עַל־ (above) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן (the tabernacle), יַחֲנֽוּ׃ (they camped).

19  וּבְהַאֲרִ֧יךְ (And when continued long) הֶֽעָנָ֛ן (the cloud) עַל־ (above) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן (the tabernacle) יָמִ֣ים (days) רַבִּ֑ים (many), וְשָׁמְר֧וּ (and kept) בְנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת (the charge) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִסָּֽעוּ׃ (did journey). 20  וְיֵ֞שׁ (And it was) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) יִהְיֶ֧ה (was) הֶֽעָנָ֛ן (the cloud) יָמִ֥ים (days) מִסְפָּ֖ר (a few) עַל־ (above) הַמִּשְׁכָּ֑ן (the tabernacle), עַל־ (according to) פִּ֤י (the command) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), יַחֲנ֔וּ (they would remain encamped). וְעַל־ (And according to) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) יִסָּֽעוּ׃ (they would journey). 21  וְיֵ֞שׁ (And it was), אֲשֶׁר־ (when) יִהְיֶ֤ה (remained only) הֶֽעָנָן֙ (the cloud) מֵעֶ֣רֶב (from evening) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֔קֶר (morning), וְנַעֲלָ֧ה (and was taken up) הֶֽעָנָ֛ן (the cloud) בַּבֹּ֖קֶר (in the morning), וְנָסָ֑עוּ (and they would journey). א֚וֹ (Whether) יוֹמָ֣ם (by day) וָלַ֔יְלָה (or by night) וְנַעֲלָ֥ה (whenever was taken up) הֶעָנָ֖ן (the cloud), וְנָסָֽעוּ׃ (and they would journey).

22  אֽוֹ־ (Whether it was) יֹמַ֜יִם (two days) אוֹ־ (or) חֹ֣דֶשׁ (a month) אוֹ־ (or) יָמִ֗ים (a year) בְּהַאֲרִ֨יךְ (that remained) הֶעָנָ֤ן (the cloud) עַל־ (above) הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ (the tabernacle), לִשְׁכֹּ֣ן (remained) עָלָ֔יו (over), יַחֲנ֥וּ (camped) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִסָּ֑עוּ (did journey); וּבְהֵעָלֹת֖וֹ (and when it was lifted up), יִסָּֽעוּ׃ (they would journey). 23  עַל־ (At) פִּ֤י (the mouth) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) יַחֲנ֔וּ (they remained encamped), וְעַל־ (and at) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) יִסָּ֑עוּ (they journeyed) אֶת־ (-); מִשְׁמֶ֤רֶת (the charge) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) שָׁמָ֔רוּ (they kept), עַל־ (at) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) מֹשֶֽׁה׃פ (of Moses).
