Exodus 12

The First Passover
(Numbers 9:1–14)

1  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) וְאֶֽל־ (and to) אַהֲרֹ֔ן (Aaron) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  הַחֹ֧דֶשׁ (The month) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) לָכֶ֖ם (shall be for you⁺) רֹ֣אשׁ (the beginning) חֳדָשִׁ֑ים (of months), רִאשׁ֥וֹן (the first) הוּא֙ (it) לָכֶ֔ם (shall be for you⁺) לְחָדְשֵׁ֖י (of the months) הַשָּׁנָֽה׃ (of the year).

3  דַּבְּר֗וּ (Speak) אֶֽל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) עֲדַ֤ת (the congregation) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), בֶּעָשֹׂ֖ר (on the tenth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וְיִקְח֣וּ (and shall take) לָהֶ֗ם (for themselves) אִ֛ישׁ (each man) שֶׂ֥ה (a lamb), לְבֵית־ (according to the house) אָבֹ֖ת (of the fathers), שֶׂ֥ה (a lamb) לַבָּֽיִת׃ (for a house). 4  וְאִם־ (And if) יִמְעַ֣ט (too small) הַבַּיִת֮ (the house) מִהְיֹ֣ת (is) מִשֶּׂה֒ (for a lamb), וְלָקַ֣ח (and shall take it) ה֗וּא (him) וּשְׁכֵנ֛וֹ (and his neighbor) הַקָּרֹ֥ב (who is near) אֶל־ (to) בֵּית֖וֹ (his house). בְּמִכְסַ֣ת (By the number) נְפָשֹׁ֑ת (of the persons) אִ֚ישׁ (each man) לְפִ֣י (according to the mouth) אָכְל֔וֹ (of his eating), תָּכֹ֖סּוּ (you⁺ shall count) עַל־ (for) הַשֶּֽׂה׃ (the lamb).

5  שֶׂ֥ה (A lamb) תָמִ֛ים (unblemished), זָכָ֥ר (a male) בֶּן־ (a son) שָׁנָ֖ה (of a year), יִהְיֶ֣ה (shall be) לָכֶ֑ם (for you⁺). מִן־ (From) הַכְּבָשִׂ֥ים (the sheep) וּמִן־ (or from) הָעִזִּ֖ים (the goats) תִּקָּֽחוּ׃ (you⁺ shall take it). 6  וְהָיָ֤ה (And it shall be) לָכֶם֙ (for you⁺) לְמִשְׁמֶ֔רֶת (kept) עַ֣ד (until) אַרְבָּעָ֥ה (four) עָשָׂ֛ר (and tenth) י֖וֹם (day) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of the month) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), וְשָׁחֲט֣וּ (and shall slaughter) אֹת֗וֹ (it) כֹּ֛ל (the whole) קְהַ֥ל (assembly) עֲדַֽת־ (of the congregation) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בֵּ֥ין (between) הָעַרְבָּֽיִם׃ (the evenings). 7  וְלָֽקְחוּ֙ (And they shall take) מִן־ (from) הַדָּ֔ם (the blood) וְנָֽתְנ֛וּ (and put it) עַל־ (on) שְׁתֵּ֥י (two) הַמְּזוּזֹ֖ת (the doorposts) וְעַל־ (and on) הַמַּשְׁק֑וֹף (the lintel) עַ֚ל (on) הַבָּ֣תִּ֔ים (the houses), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יֹאכְל֥וּ (they shall eat) אֹת֖וֹ (it) בָּהֶֽם׃ (in).

8  וְאָכְל֥וּ (And they shall eat) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּשָׂ֖ר (the flesh) בַּלַּ֣יְלָה (on the night) הַזֶּ֑ה (this); צְלִי־ (roasted in) אֵ֣שׁ (fire) וּמַצּ֔וֹת (and with unleavened bread) עַל־ (and with) מְרֹרִ֖ים (bitter herbs) יֹאכְלֻֽהוּ׃ (they shall eat it).

9  אַל־ (Not) תֹּאכְל֤וּ (you⁺ shall eat) מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (from it) נָ֔א (raw) וּבָשֵׁ֥ל (or boiled) מְבֻשָּׁ֖ל (boiled at all) בַּמָּ֑יִם (in water), כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) צְלִי־ (roasted) אֵ֔שׁ (in fire)— רֹאשׁ֥וֹ (its head) עַל־ (with) כְּרָעָ֖יו (its legs), וְעַל־ (and with) קִרְבּֽוֹ׃ (its entrails). 10  וְלֹא־ (And not) תוֹתִ֥ירוּ (you⁺ shall leave) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (from it) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֑קֶר (morning). וְהַנֹּתָ֥ר (And what remains) מִמֶּ֛נּוּ (from it) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֖קֶר (morning), בָּאֵ֥שׁ (with the fire) תִּשְׂרֹֽפוּ׃ (you⁺ shall burn).

11  וְכָכָה֮ (And thus) תֹּאכְל֣וּ (you⁺ shall eat) אֹתוֹ֒ (it): מָתְנֵיכֶ֣ם (Your⁺ loins) חֲגֻרִ֔ים (girded), נַֽעֲלֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ sandals) בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם (on your⁺ feet), וּמַקֶּלְכֶ֖ם (and your⁺ staff) בְּיֶדְכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ hand); וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֤ם (and you⁺ shall eat) אֹתוֹ֙ (it) בְּחִפָּז֔וֹן (in haste). פֶּ֥סַח (Passover) ה֖וּא (it is) לַיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH).

12  וְעָבַרְתִּ֣י (And for I will pass) בְאֶֽרֶץ־ (through the land) מִצְרַיִם֮ (of Egypt) בַּלַּ֣יְלָה (on the night) הַזֶּה֒ (this), וְהִכֵּיתִ֤י (and I will strike) כָל־ (every) בְּכוֹר֙ (firstborn) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt), מֵאָדָ֖ם (from man) וְעַד־ (even to) בְּהֵמָ֑ה (beast); וּבְכָל־ (and on all) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the gods) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה (I will execute) שְׁפָטִ֖ים (judgments). אֲנִ֥י (I) יְהוָֽה׃ (am YHWH). 13  וְהָיָה֩ (And shall be) הַדָּ֨ם (the blood) לָכֶ֜ם (for you⁺) לְאֹ֗ת (a sign) עַ֤ל (on) הַבָּתִּים֙ (the houses) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) שָׁ֔ם (are), וְרָאִ֙יתִי֙ (and I will see) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּ֔ם (the blood), וּפָסַחְתִּ֖י (and I will pass) עֲלֵכֶ֑ם (over you⁺) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִֽהְיֶ֨ה (shall be) בָכֶ֥ם (among you⁺) נֶ֙גֶף֙ (a plague) לְמַשְׁחִ֔ית (for destruction) בְּהַכֹּתִ֖י (in my striking) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

The Feast of Unleavened Bread
(Leviticus 23:4–8; Numbers 28:16–25; Deuteronomy 16:1–8)

14  וְהָיָה֩ (And shall be) הַיּ֨וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֤ה (this) לָכֶם֙ (for you⁺) לְזִכָּר֔וֹן (a memorial), וְחַגֹּתֶ֥ם (and you⁺ shall celebrate) אֹת֖וֹ (it) חַ֣ג (as a feast) לַֽיהוָ֑ה (to YHWH) לְדֹרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (throughout your⁺ generations). חֻקַּ֥ת (A statute) עוֹלָ֖ם (everlasting) תְּחָגֻּֽהוּ׃ (you⁺ shall celebrate it). 15  שִׁבְעַ֤ת (Seven) יָמִים֙ (days) מַצּ֣וֹת (unleavened bread) תֹּאכֵ֔לוּ (you⁺ shall eat). אַ֚ךְ (Indeed) בַּיּ֣וֹם (the day) הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן (first) תַּשְׁבִּ֥יתוּ (you⁺ shall remove) שְּׂאֹ֖ר (leaven) מִבָּתֵּיכֶ֑ם (from your⁺ houses); כִּ֣י׀ (for) כָּל־ (anyone) אֹכֵ֣ל (eating) חָמֵ֗ץ (leavened bread), וְנִכְרְתָ֞ה (and shall be cut off) הַנֶּ֤פֶשׁ (soul) הַהִוא֙ (that) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (from Israel) מִיּ֥וֹם (from the day) הָרִאשֹׁ֖ן (first) עַד־ (until) י֥וֹם (day) הַשְּׁבִעִֽי׃ (the seventh).

16  וּבַיּ֤וֹם (And on the day) הָרִאשׁוֹן֙ (first) מִקְרָא־ (shall be a convocation) קֹ֔דֶשׁ (holy), וּבַיּוֹם֙ (and on the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י (seventh) מִקְרָא־ (a convocation) קֹ֖דֶשׁ (holy) יִהְיֶ֣ה (there shall be) לָכֶ֑ם (for you⁺). כָּל־ (Manner) מְלָאכָה֙ (of work) לֹא־ (no) יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה (shall be done) בָהֶ֔ם (on them), אַ֚ךְ (but) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that which) יֵאָכֵ֣ל (must eat) לְכָל־ (every) נֶ֔פֶשׁ (soul), ה֥וּא (that) לְבַדּ֖וֹ (alone) יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה (may be done) לָכֶֽם׃ (by you⁺).

17  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֮ (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּצּוֹת֒ (the Unleavened); כִּ֗י (for) בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ (on the same) הַיּ֣וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (I brought out) אֶת־ (-) צִבְאוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ armies) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֞ם (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (throughout your⁺ generations) חֻקַּ֥ת (a statute) עוֹלָֽם׃ (everlasting). 18  בָּרִאשֹׁ֡ן (In the first month), בְּאַרְבָּעָה֩ (on the four) עָשָׂ֨ר (and tenth) י֤וֹם (day) לַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ (of the month) בָּעֶ֔רֶב (in the evening), תֹּאכְל֖וּ (you⁺ shall eat) מַצֹּ֑ת (unleavened bread) עַ֠ד (until) י֣וֹם (the day) הָאֶחָ֧ד (of the first) וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים (and twentieth) לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ (of the month) בָּעָֽרֶב׃ (in the evening). 19  שִׁבְעַ֣ת (Seven) יָמִ֔ים (days) שְׂאֹ֕ר (leaven) לֹ֥א (not) יִמָּצֵ֖א (shall be found) בְּבָתֵּיכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ houses). כִּ֣י׀ (For) כָּל־ (any one) אֹכֵ֣ל (eating) מַחְמֶ֗צֶת (what is leavened) וְנִכְרְתָ֞ה (and shall be cut off) הַנֶּ֤פֶשׁ (the soul) הַהִוא֙ (that) מֵעֲדַ֣ת (from the congregation) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), בַּגֵּ֖ר (among the sojourner) וּבְאֶזְרַ֥ח (and among the native) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land). 20  כָּל־ (Anything) מַחְמֶ֖צֶת (leavened) לֹ֣א (not) תֹאכֵ֑לוּ (you⁺ shall eat); בְּכֹל֙ (in all) מוֹשְׁבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ dwellings) תֹּאכְל֖וּ (you⁺ shall eat) מַצּֽוֹת׃פ (unleavened bread).

21  וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And called) מֹשֶׁ֛ה (Moses) לְכָל־ (for all) זִקְנֵ֥י (the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵהֶ֑ם (to them), מִֽשְׁכ֗וּ (Draw out) וּקְח֨וּ (and take) לָכֶ֥ם (for yourselves) צֹ֛אן (lambs) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (according to your⁺ families), וְשַׁחֲט֥וּ (and slaughter) הַפָּֽסַח׃ (the Passover). 22  וּלְקַחְתֶּ֞ם (And you⁺ shall take) אֲגֻדַּ֣ת (a bunch) אֵז֗וֹב (of hyssop) וּטְבַלְתֶּם֮ (and dip it) בַּדָּ֣ם (in the blood) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בַּסַּף֒ (is in the basin), וְהִגַּעְתֶּ֤ם (and you⁺ shall touch it) אֶל־ (to) הַמַּשְׁקוֹף֙ (the lintel) וְאֶל־ (and to) שְׁתֵּ֣י (the two) הַמְּזוּזֹ֔ת (doorposts) מִן־ (from) הַדָּ֖ם (the blood) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בַּסָּ֑ף (is in the basin). וְאַתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺) לֹ֥א (not) תֵצְא֛וּ (shall go out) אִ֥ישׁ (each man) מִפֶּֽתַח־ (from the door) בֵּית֖וֹ (of his house) עַד־ (until) בֹּֽקֶר׃ (morning).

23  וְעָבַ֣ר (And for will pass through) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) לִנְגֹּ֣ף (to strike) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַיִם֒ (Egypt), וְרָאָ֤ה (and He sees) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּם֙ (the blood) עַל־ (on) הַמַּשְׁק֔וֹף (the lintel) וְעַ֖ל (and on) שְׁתֵּ֣י (two) הַמְּזוּזֹ֑ת (the doorposts), וּפָסַ֤ח (and will pass) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עַל־ (over) הַפֶּ֔תַח (the door) וְלֹ֤א (and not) יִתֵּן֙ (will allow) הַמַּשְׁחִ֔ית (the destroyer) לָבֹ֥א (to come) אֶל־ (into) בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ houses) לִנְגֹּֽף׃ (to strike you).

24  וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם (And you⁺ shall keep) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֣ר (the word) הַזֶּ֑ה (this) לְחָק־ (as a statute) לְךָ֥ (for you) וּלְבָנֶ֖יךָ (and for your sons) עַד־ (unto) עוֹלָֽם׃ (eternity). 25  וְהָיָ֞ה (And it shall come to pass), כִּֽי־ (when) תָבֹ֣אוּ (you⁺ come) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יִתֵּ֧ן (will give) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) דִּבֵּ֑ר (He has spoken), וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם (that you⁺ will keep) אֶת־ (-) הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה (the service) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this).

26  וְהָיָ֕ה (And it shall be), כִּֽי־ (when) יֹאמְר֥וּ (say) אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) בְּנֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ sons), מָ֛ה (What) הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה (the service) הַזֹּ֖את (is this) לָכֶֽם׃ (to you⁺)? 27  וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֡ם (And you⁺ shall say), זֶֽבַח־ (A sacrifice) פֶּ֨סַח (of Passover) ה֜וּא (it) לַֽיהוָ֗ה (is to YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) פָּ֠סַח (passed) עַל־ (over) בָּתֵּ֤י (the houses) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם (in Egypt), בְּנָגְפּ֥וֹ (when He struck) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרַ֖יִם (Egypt), וְאֶת־ (and) בָּתֵּ֣ינוּ (our houses) הִצִּ֑יל (He delivered).

וַיִּקֹּ֥ד (And bowed their heads) הָעָ֖ם (the people) וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּֽוּ׃ (and worshiped). 28  וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ (And went) וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֖וּ (and did) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (As) צִוָּ֧ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן (and Aaron), כֵּ֥ן (so) עָשֽׂוּ׃ס (they did).

The Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn

29  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) בַּחֲצִ֣י (at) הַלַּ֗יְלָה (midnight) וַֽיהוָה֮ (that YHWH) הִכָּ֣ה (struck) כָל־ (every) בְּכוֹר֮ (firstborn) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרַיִם֒ (of Egypt), מִבְּכֹ֤ר (from the firstborn) פַּרְעֹה֙ (of Pharaoh) הַיֹּשֵׁ֣ב (who sits) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֔וֹ (his throne) עַ֚ד (to) בְּכ֣וֹר (the firstborn) הַשְּׁבִ֔י (of the captive) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who) בְּבֵ֣ית (is in the house) הַבּ֑וֹר (of the pit), וְכֹ֖ל (and every) בְּכ֥וֹר (firstborn) בְּהֵמָֽה׃ (of a beast).

30  וַיָּ֨קָם (And rose) פַּרְעֹ֜ה (Pharaoh) לַ֗יְלָה (in the night), ה֤וּא (he) וְכָל־ (and all) עֲבָדָיו֙ (his servants) וְכָל־ (and all) מִצְרַ֔יִם (Egypt). וַתְּהִ֛י (And there was) צְעָקָ֥ה (a cry) גְדֹלָ֖ה (great) בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם (in Egypt), כִּֽי־ (for) אֵ֣ין (there was not) בַּ֔יִת (a house) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) אֵֽין־ (was not) שָׁ֖ם (there) מֵֽת׃ (a dead person).

The Exodus Begins

31  וַיִּקְרָא֩ (And he called) לְמֹשֶׁ֨ה (for Moses) וּֽלְאַהֲרֹ֜ן (and for Aaron) לַ֗יְלָה (by night) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), ק֤וּמוּ (Rise), צְּאוּ֙ (go out) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) עַמִּ֔י (of my people), גַּם־ (both) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺) גַּם־ (and) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). וּלְכ֛וּ (And go), עִבְד֥וּ (serve) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), כְּדַבֶּרְכֶֽם׃ (according to your⁺ word). 32  גַּם־ (Also) צֹאנְכֶ֨ם (your⁺ flocks) גַּם־ (and also) בְּקַרְכֶ֥ם (your⁺ herds) קְח֛וּ (take), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבַּרְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ have spoken), וָלֵ֑כוּ (and go)! וּבֵֽרַכְתֶּ֖ם (And bless) גַּם־ (also) אֹתִֽי׃ (me).

33  וַתֶּחֱזַ֤ק (And were strong) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (the Egyptians) עַל־ (upon) הָעָ֔ם (the people) לְמַהֵ֖ר (to hasten) לְשַׁלְּחָ֣ם (to send them out) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land), כִּ֥י (for) אָמְר֖וּ (they said), כֻּלָּ֥נוּ (We are all) מֵתִֽים׃ (dead people)! 34  וַיִּשָּׂ֥א (And carried) הָעָ֛ם (the people) אֶת־ (-) בְּצֵק֖וֹ (their dough) טֶ֣רֶם (before) יֶחְמָ֑ץ (it was leavened), מִשְׁאֲרֹתָ֛ם (their kneading bowls) צְרֻרֹ֥ת (having bound up) בְּשִׂמְלֹתָ֖ם (in their clothes) עַל־ (on) שִׁכְמָֽם׃ (their shoulders).

35  וּבְנֵי־ (And the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (of Israel) עָשׂ֖וּ (did) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (of Moses), וַֽיִּשְׁאֲלוּ֙ (and they asked) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (from the Egyptians) כְּלֵי־ (articles) כֶ֛סֶף (of silver), וּכְלֵ֥י (and articles) זָהָ֖ב (of gold), וּשְׂמָלֹֽת׃ (and clothing). 36  וַֽיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) נָתַ֨ן (gave) אֶת־ (-) חֵ֥ן (favor) הָעָ֛ם (the people) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), וַיַּשְׁאִל֑וּם (and they granted their request). וַֽיְנַצְּל֖וּ (And they plundered) אֶת־ (-) מִצְרָֽיִם׃פ (Egypt).

37  וַיִּסְע֧וּ (And journeyed) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) מֵרַעְמְסֵ֖ס (from Rameses) סֻכֹּ֑תָה (to Succoth), כְּשֵׁשׁ־ (about six) מֵא֨וֹת (hundred) אֶ֧לֶף (thousand) רַגְלִ֛י (on foot) הַגְּבָרִ֖ים (men), לְבַ֥ד (apart) מִטָּֽף׃ (from little ones). 38  וְגַם־ (And also) עֵ֥רֶב (a mixed) רַ֖ב (multitude) עָלָ֣ה (went up) אִתָּ֑ם (with them), וְצֹ֣אן (and flock) וּבָקָ֔ר (and herd)— מִקְנֶ֖ה (livestock) כָּבֵ֥ד (much) מְאֹֽד׃ (very).

39  וַיֹּאפ֨וּ (And they baked) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּצֵ֜ק (the dough) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הוֹצִ֧יאוּ (they brought out) מִמִּצְרַ֛יִם (from Egypt), עֻגֹ֥ת (cakes) מַצּ֖וֹת (of unleavened), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֣א (not) חָמֵ֑ץ (it was leavened) כִּֽי־ (for) גֹרְשׁ֣וּ (they were driven out) מִמִּצְרַ֗יִם (from Egypt) וְלֹ֤א (and not) יָֽכְלוּ֙ (were able) לְהִתְמַהְמֵ֔הַּ (to delay), וְגַם־ (and also) צֵדָ֖ה (provisions) לֹא־ (not) עָשׂ֥וּ (they had made) לָהֶֽם׃ (for themselves).

40  וּמוֹשַׁב֙ (And the dwelling) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יָשְׁב֖וּ (lived) בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם (in Egypt) שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (was thirty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 41  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּץ֙ (at the end) שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (of the thirty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), וַיְהִ֗י (and it came to pass) בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ (on the same) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), יָֽצְא֛וּ (that went out) כָּל־ (all) צִבְא֥וֹת (the armies) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 42  לֵ֣יל (A night) שִׁמֻּרִ֥ים (of vigil) הוּא֙ (it is) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH) לְהוֹצִיאָ֖ם (to bring them out) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt). הֽוּא־ (This) הַלַּ֤יְלָה (the night) הַזֶּה֙ (the same) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH) שִׁמֻּרִ֛ים (a vigil) לְכָל־ (for all) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃פ (throughout their generations).

Instructions for the Passover

43  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן (and Aaron), זֹ֖את (This) חֻקַּ֣ת (is the statute) הַפָּ֑סַח (of the Passover); כָּל־ (any) בֶּן־ (son) נֵכָ֖ר (of a foreigner) לֹא־ (not) יֹ֥אכַל (shall eat) בּֽוֹ׃ (of it). 44  וְכָל־ (And every) עֶ֥בֶד (servant) אִ֖ישׁ (of man) מִקְנַת־ (purchased) כָּ֑סֶף (of silver), וּמַלְתָּ֣ה (when you have circumcised) אֹת֔וֹ (him), אָ֖ז (then) יֹ֥אכַל (he may eat) בּֽוֹ׃ (of it). 45  תּוֹשָׁ֥ב (A settler) וְשָׂכִ֖יר (and a hireling) לֹא־ (not) יֹ֥אכַל־ (shall eat) בּֽוֹ׃ (of it).

46  בְּבַ֤יִת (In the house) אֶחָד֙ (one) יֵאָכֵ֔ל (it shall be eaten); לֹא־ (not) תוֹצִ֧יא (you shall bring out) מִן־ (from) הַבַּ֛יִת (the house) מִן־ (any) הַבָּשָׂ֖ר (of the flesh) ח֑וּצָה (outside), וְעֶ֖צֶם (and a bone) לֹ֥א (not) תִשְׁבְּרוּ־ (shall you⁺ break) בֽוֹ׃ (of it).

47  כָּל־ (All) עֲדַ֥ת (the congregation) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) יַעֲשׂ֥וּ (shall do) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (it). 48  וְכִֽי־ (And when) יָג֨וּר (sojourns) אִתְּךָ֜ (with you) גֵּ֗ר (a sojourner), וְעָ֣שָׂה (and he does) פֶסַח֮ (the Passover) לַיהוָה֒ (to YHWH), הִמּ֧וֹל (shall be circumcised) ל֣וֹ (of his) כָל־ (every) זָכָ֗ר (male); וְאָז֙ (and then) יִקְרַ֣ב (he may come near) לַעֲשֹׂת֔וֹ (to do it), וְהָיָ֖ה (and he shall be) כְּאֶזְרַ֣ח (as a native) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the land). וְכָל־ (And for) עָרֵ֖ל (uncircumcised person) לֹֽא־ (not) יֹ֥אכַל (shall eat) בּֽוֹ׃ (of it). 49  תּוֹרָ֣ה (Law) אַחַ֔ת (one) יִהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) לָֽאֶזְרָ֑ח (for the native) וְלַגֵּ֖ר (and for the sojourner) הַגָּ֥ר (who is sojourning) בְּתוֹכְכֶֽם׃ (in your⁺ midst).

50  וַיַּֽעֲשׂ֖וּ (And did) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel); כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) צִוָּ֧ה (commanded) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) וְאֶֽת־ (and) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (Aaron), כֵּ֥ן (so) עָשֽׂוּ׃ס (they did). 51  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass) בְּעֶ֖צֶם (on very same) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), הוֹצִ֨יא (that brought out) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֧י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) עַל־ (by) צִבְאֹתָֽם׃פ (their armies).
