English Standard VersionNew Living Translation
It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him.
for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”2“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”
And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume over his head.
There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?4Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked.
For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.5“It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.6But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?
For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.7 You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.
She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.8 She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.
And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”9 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to betray Jesus to them.
And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.11They were delighted when they heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money. So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus. The Last Supper
And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”12On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?”
And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him,13So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: “As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.
and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’
And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”
And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.16So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.
And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.17In the evening Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”18As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me.”
They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”19Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one?”
He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.20He replied, “It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.
For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”21 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”
And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.”
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.23And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.24And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.
Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.”
And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’27On the way, Jesus told them, “All of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say, ‘God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”28 But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”
Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”29Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will.”
And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”30Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.31“No!” Peter declared emphatically. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others vowed the same. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”32They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, “Sit here while I go and pray.”
And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled.33He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.
And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”34He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.
And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”38 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.39Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.
And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.40When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open. And they didn’t know what to say.
And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.41When he returned to them the third time, he said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But no—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”42 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!” Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.”
And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss.
And they laid hands on him and seized him.46Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.47But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.
And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?48Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?
Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.”
And they all left him and fled.50Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away.
And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,51One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,
but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.52he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked. Jesus before the Council
And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.53They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered.
And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire.54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any.
For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree.56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other.
And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony:
“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’”
Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.59But even then they didn’t get their stories straight!
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?”
But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”62Jesus said, “ I Am . And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. ”
And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses?
You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!”
And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away. Peter Denies Jesus
And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,66Meanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by
and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”67and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, “You were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth. ”
But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed.68But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.
And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!”
But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”70But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.”
But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”71Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.
