Berean Study Bible Persecution ForetoldJesus had warned the disciples that the world would hate them as it hated Him and that opposition would come from those who rejected His authority. He prepared them in advance so that the coming persecution would not shake their confidence in His identity or mission. Jhn 14:29 And now I have told you before it happens,… so that you will not fall away. The disciples would soon face rejection from Jewish leaders, expulsion from synagogues, and hostility from the surrounding world. Foreknowledge of these trials would help them endure rather than fall away from their faith (apostasy) when suffering came. Mat 13:21 But since he has no root, he remains for only a season.… They will put you out of the synagogues. Jewish believers in Jesus faced exclusion from the synagogue, which meant more than losing a place of worship. Synagogues stood at the center of religious, social, and communal life, so expulsion brought public shame and separation from family and neighbors. As opposition to Jesus’ followers grew, many Jewish authorities regarded faith in Him as a threat to established religious order. Jhn 9:22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews.… In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. Jesus warned that persecution would extend beyond exclusion to violence. Some opponents would believe they were defending God and preserving true worship by destroying His followers. Saul of Tarsus initially acted with this conviction as he pursued and imprisoned Christians before encountering the risen Christ. Religious zeal without submission to God’s truth could lead people to oppose the very Messiah and people of God they claimed to serve. Act 26:9-11 So then, I too was convinced that I ought to… They will do these things Persecution, exclusion, and even violence would come against Jesus’ followers after His departure. Early Christians faced opposition from Jewish leaders and Roman authorities because of their allegiance to Christ. Jhn 15:20 Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant… because they have not known Their hostility revealed a deeper spiritual failure. Though many knew the Scriptures and practiced religious traditions, they did not truly know God or recognize His work in Christ. 2Th 1:8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance… the Father God is the Father whom Jesus revealed to His disciples. Rejecting the Son showed that His opponents did not possess the relationship with God they claimed. Jhn 14:7 If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well… or Me. Jesus is the Son sent by the Father and the promised Messiah. To reject Him was to reject the Father who sent Him. Jhn 8:19 “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered.… But I have told you these things Jesus prepared the disciples for the hostility, exclusion, and suffering that would follow His departure. His warnings included the coming of the Holy Spirit, the world’s opposition, and the Spirit’s sustaining work, giving them a framework for what lay ahead. Jhn 14:29 And now I have told you before it happens,… so that when their hour comes, The persecution would arrive at an appointed time, not outside God’s knowledge or control. Jesus knew the forces that would oppose His followers and the events that would soon unfold. Luk 22:53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,… you will remember that I told you about them. When opposition came, the disciples would recognize that Jesus had foretold it. Remembering His words would confirm that their suffering had not taken Him by surprise and that His purposes continued through it. Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send… I did not tell you these things from the beginning, Earlier in their ministry, the disciples had not yet needed these warnings in full. Jesus revealed what they needed as the time of His death, resurrection, and ascension drew near. Mat 13:11-17 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries…… because I was with you. During His earthly ministry, Jesus personally guided and protected them. After His departure, the Holy Spirit would continue that work, enabling them to bear witness in a hostile world. Jhn 17:12 While I was with them, I protected and preserved them…
The Promise of the Holy SpiritJesus was nearing the end of His earthly ministry and preparing the disciples for His return to the Father through His death, resurrection, and ascension. His departure was not a defeat or an interruption of His work, but the fulfillment of the mission for which the Father had sent Him. From the Father He came, and to the Father He would return, where He would continue His ministry on behalf of His people. Jhn 7:33 So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer,… yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ The disciples were overwhelmed by the prospect of losing Jesus’ visible presence and had not understood the purpose or outcome of His departure. Though Peter had previously raised the question, their sorrow now kept them from considering where He was going and what His return to the Father would accomplish. Their understanding would be strengthened after His resurrection and through the coming ministry of the Holy Spirit. Jhn 13:36 “Lord, where are You going?” Simon Peter asked.… Instead, The disciples responded to Jesus’ teaching about His departure with grief rather than confidence in God’s purpose. They had followed Him closely and could not yet see how His leaving would lead to greater blessing through the Holy Spirit. Jhn 14:1 Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God;… your hearts are filled with sorrow Their grief touched their whole inner life—their thoughts, hopes, and sense of security. They feared losing the One they knew as their Teacher, Messiah, and Lord. Act 20:38 They were especially grieved by his statement… because I have told you these things. Jesus had warned them of His coming death, return to the Father, and the opposition they would face. Their sorrow arose from an incomplete understanding of God’s plan, which would be fulfilled through Christ’s sacrifice, resurrection, and ascension. Jhn 14:25 All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But I tell you the truth, Jesus speaks with divine authority, assuring the disciples that what follows is certain despite their sorrow. Jhn 8:45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me! it is for your benefit that I am going away. His death, resurrection, and ascension would complete His earthly mission and open the way for the Spirit’s ministry among all believers. Jhn 14:28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back… Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; The Holy Spirit would not begin this new phase of His work until Christ had returned to the Father, applying the benefits of Christ’s finished sacrifice and dwelling within His people. Jhn 7:39 He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed… but if I go, I will send Him to you. After His ascension, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to strengthen, teach, and guide the disciples as they carried the gospel to the world. Luk 24:49 And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you.… And when He comes, Jesus points to the Holy Spirit, whom He promised to send after His departure. At Pentecost, the Spirit came upon the disciples and began His continuing work in the church and the world. Jhn 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another… He will convict the world The Spirit exposes the world’s true condition before God. He brings divine truth to bear on people who remain in rebellion against Christ. Act 2:37-38 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart… in regard to sin The central sin is refusal to believe in Jesus. The Spirit reveals humanity’s guilt and need for forgiveness through Christ. Rom 3:19-20 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says… and righteousness The Spirit testifies to the perfect righteousness of Jesus, confirmed by His return to the Father. He also exposes the failure of human righteousness apart from Christ. Rom 3:21-22 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God… and judgment: The Spirit declares that judgment is certain. Satan, the ruler of this world, was defeated through Christ’s death and resurrection, and all who reject Christ remain under judgment. Act 17:30-31 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times,… in regard to sin, Sin is humanity’s rebellion against God, evident from the fall in Genesis and exposed by the Law’s demands. It brings guilt, death, and separation from God. The Spirit confronts the world with its true condition and its need for forgiveness through Christ. Jhn 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not… because they do not believe in Me; The decisive expression of sin is refusing Jesus, whom the Father sent as Savior and Messiah. His works, words, death, and resurrection establish His identity, yet many reject Him. The Spirit reveals that unbelief is not neutral but a rejection of God’s provision for salvation. Jhn 8:24 That is why I told you that you would die in your sins.… in regard to righteousness, The Holy Spirit exposes the world’s false standards and reveals the righteousness found perfectly in Jesus Christ. True righteousness is not achieved by human effort but is granted by God to those who believe in His Son. Rom 3:21-26 But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God… because I am going to the Father Jesus’ return to the Father completed His earthly mission and confirmed the Father’s acceptance of His sacrifice. Exalted in heaven, He now reigns with divine authority and intercedes for His people. Jhn 20:17 “Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet…”… and you will no longer see Me; After His ascension, the disciples would no longer have Jesus’ physical presence among them. Yet He would remain with them through the Holy Spirit, who would guide and strengthen them as they awaited Christ’s promised return. Jhn 14:19 In a little while the world will see Me no more,… and in regard to judgment, God’s judgment exposes the division between obedience and rebellion. Jesus’ coming brought that judgment into view, revealing the true condition of those who receive Him and those who reject Him. Jhn 3:19 And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world…… because the prince of this world Satan exercises real but limited influence over a fallen world opposed to God. He sought to claim authority over the nations and has worked through deception, sin, and unbelief. Jhn 14:30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince… has been condemned. Christ’s death and resurrection secured Satan’s defeat. Though Satan continues to oppose God’s people, his judgment is settled, and his final overthrow is certain. Jhn 12:31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince… I still have much to tell you, Jesus had taught the disciples throughout His public ministry, yet they had not fully understood the meaning of His coming death, resurrection, departure, and the work that would follow. God’s purposes were being revealed according to His timing, and further instruction would come after these events had taken place. Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send… but you cannot yet bear to hear it. The disciples were still troubled by Jesus’ approaching death and unprepared for all that His departure would mean. Their expectations of the Messiah and their limited understanding made them unable to receive further truths at that moment. After Jesus’ resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, they would be prepared to understand and carry out the work entrusted to them. 1Co 3:1-2 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual… However, when the Spirit of truth comes, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit’s coming after His departure. Fulfilled at Pentecost, the Spirit came to dwell in and empower the disciples for their witness. As the Spirit of truth, He reveals God’s truth and exposes the world’s falsehood. Jhn 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you… He will guide you into all truth. The Spirit would lead the apostles into a full understanding of Christ’s words, works, death, resurrection, and mission. His guidance also enabled them to proclaim the gospel faithfully and establish the church on the truth Christ had given. Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send… For He will not speak on His own, The Holy Spirit acts in complete unity with the Father and the Son. His teaching does not originate independently or contradict Christ’s revelation. Jhn 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father… but He will speak what He hears, The Spirit communicates the divine message with full authority. Through Him, the disciples received the truth necessary for their ministry and testimony concerning Jesus. Jhn 8:26 I have much to say about you and much to judge… and He will declare to you what is to come. The Spirit would prepare them for coming events, including persecution, the growth of the church, and the unfolding of God’s redemptive purposes. He would also reveal matters concerning Christ’s return and final victory. Rev 1:1 This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him… He will glorify Me The Holy Spirit exalts Jesus Christ by directing attention to His person, authority, saving work, and words. Jesus’ glory is revealed in His obedience to the Father, His death and resurrection, and His return to the Father. Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes… by taking from what is Mine The Spirit communicates what belongs to the Son, not a separate or competing message. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit act in perfect unity, and the Spirit faithfully conveys Christ’s truth and authority. Jhn 3:35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things… and disclosing it to you. The disciples would receive understanding and guidance through the Spirit after Jesus’ departure. He would make Christ’s teaching known to them, strengthen their witness, and enable them to grasp the significance of Jesus’ completed work. Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send… Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. The Father and the Son possess all things in perfect unity, revealing the Son’s full deity and eternal equality with the Father. Jesus is not merely a messenger of God; He shares the Father’s authority, glory, and divine nature. Jhn 17:10 All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine;… That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine The Holy Spirit proceeds in complete harmony with the Father and the Son. After Jesus’ departure, the Spirit would make known the truth, work, and teaching of Christ to the disciples, continuing Christ’s ministry among them. Jhn 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you… and disclose it to you. The disciples would receive the understanding needed to proclaim Christ faithfully and establish the church. The Spirit’s guidance enabled the apostles to bear authoritative witness to Jesus and continues to illuminate God’s truth for believers. 1Co 2:10 But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.… In a little while you will see Me no more, Jesus was soon to be taken away through His arrest, crucifixion, and burial. With Passover near, Jerusalem was filled with pilgrims and mounting hostility toward Him. His death would leave the disciples grieving and confused, yet it would accomplish the atoning work for which He came. Jhn 14:19 In a little while the world will see Me no more,… and then after a little while you will see Me.” After three days, Jesus would rise bodily from the grave and appear to His disciples. Their sorrow would give way to joy as His resurrection confirmed His victory over sin and death and prepared them for their witness to the world. Jhn 20:14-16 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus…
Grief Will Turn to JoyThen some of His disciples privately discussed Jesus’ words, still unable to understand the events He had foretold. Mrk 9:10 So they kept this matter to themselves,… “Why is He telling us, The disciples were troubled by what seemed to them unclear and contradictory in Jesus’ words, asking, “Why is He telling us this?” (John 16:17). Mrk 9:32 But they did not understand this statement,… ‘In a little while you will not see Me, Jesus was preparing them for His death and burial, when He would be taken from them. Jhn 14:19 In a little while the world will see Me no more,… and then after a little while you will see Me’ He pointed to His resurrection, when He would appear again to His followers. Jhn 20:19-20 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,… and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” His return to the Father would follow the completion of His earthly work, including His death, resurrection, and ascension. Jhn 14:12 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me… They kept asking, The disciples continued discussing Jesus’ words because they could not reconcile His departure with their hopes for His kingdom. As His crucifixion drew near, He was preparing them for sorrow that would soon give way to joy. Mrk 9:10 So they kept this matter to themselves,… “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? They did not yet understand that He would be taken from them in death and would appear again after three days. Their separation would be real, but it would not be permanent. Jhn 14:19 In a little while the world will see Me no more,… We do not understand what He is saying.” Their confusion showed how little they grasped before the events unfolded. After His resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, they understood His death, resurrection, and return to the Father. Jhn 8:43 Why do you not understand what I am saying?… Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus knew the disciples were struggling to understand His words, though they had not yet spoken openly. Their uncertainty arose from His repeated announcements of His departure, death, and return. Mat 9:4 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said,… Jesus said to them, He addressed their unspoken concern directly, guiding them beyond private speculation and preparing them for the events soon to unfold. Mrk 4:11 He replied, “The mystery of the kingdom of God… “Are you asking one another why I said, The disciples had been discussing His words among themselves but had not brought their questions to Him. Jesus exposed their confusion in order to explain the coming sorrow and joy. Mat 16:7-12 They discussed this among themselves and concluded,… ‘In a little while you will not see Me, His arrest, crucifixion, burial, and absence from them would occur within hours. Their separation would be real, painful, and brief. Jhn 14:19 In a little while the world will see Me no more,… and then after a little while you will see Me’? He would rise from the dead and appear again to His followers. What they could not yet understand would become clear through His resurrection. Jhn 20:19-20 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,… Truly, truly, I tell you, Jesus solemnly assures His disciples that what follows is certain and carries His full authority. Jhn 1:51 Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, …… you will weep and wail His arrest and crucifixion would bring them profound sorrow as they watched their Teacher and Messiah condemned and killed. Jas 5:1 Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail… while the world rejoices. Those who opposed Jesus, including the religious leaders who sought His death, would regard the crucifixion as their victory. Rev 11:10 And those who dwell on the earth will gloat over them… You will grieve, The disciples would endure real loss and confusion as their expectations of the Messiah’s reign seemed shattered. 1Pe 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while… but your grief will turn to joy. His resurrection would reverse their mourning, confirming His victory over sin and death and giving them lasting joy. Jer 31:13 Then the maidens will rejoice with dancing,… A woman has pain in childbirth Childbirth involves real suffering, reflecting the pain and brokenness that entered human life through the Fall. Jesus draws on a familiar and universal experience to describe the distress His disciples would soon face. Gen 3:16 To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain… because her time has come; Labor begins at its appointed time and cannot be avoided. In the same way, Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion, and the disciples’ sorrow were approaching according to God’s settled purpose. Luk 2:6 While they were there, the time came for her Child… but when she brings forth her child, The pain of labor reaches its goal in the birth of new life. The disciples’ grief would likewise lead to the decisive work of Christ’s death and resurrection. Isa 66:7-8 Before she was in labor, she gave birth;… she forgets her anguish Joy does not deny that the suffering was real, but the arrival of the child so outweighs the pain that anguish no longer governs her memory. The resurrection would transform the disciples’ fear and mourning. Job 11:16 For you will forget your misery, recalling it only… because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. A child’s birth brings joy because life has been given. Jesus’ resurrection would bring an even greater joy: He had conquered death, and His disciples would see their Lord again. Luk 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid!… So also you have sorrow now, The disciples grieved as Jesus prepared them for His departure through death. At the Last Supper, they faced the coming loss of their Teacher and friend, unaware of how soon His arrest and crucifixion would unfold. 2Co 6:10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich… but I will see you again Jesus promised a real reunion after His resurrection. Their separation would be brief, and His return would overturn the apparent finality of the cross. Jhn 20:19-20 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,… and your hearts will rejoice, Seeing the risen Christ would replace fear and grief with lasting joy. His victory over death would confirm that His mission had been completed and that His words were true. 1Pe 1:8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him;… and no one will take away your joy. The joy produced by the resurrection would endure despite persecution, suffering, and death. Because Christ lives, the hope of His followers rests on a reality no enemy or circumstance can destroy. Isa 61:7 Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion…
Ask in My NameAfter Jesus’ resurrection, ascension, and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the disciples would enter the new-covenant era in which believers have direct access to the Father through the risen Christ. Jhn 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father,… you will no longer ask Me anything. Their confusion concerning Jesus’ departure would be replaced by understanding as the Holy Spirit guided them. They would no longer depend on Jesus’ physical presence for instruction and would bring their requests directly to the Father. Jhn 14:18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Truly, truly, I tell you, Jesus solemnly confirms the certainty of His promise. Jhn 1:51 Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, …… whatever you ask the Father in My name, Prayer in Jesus’ name rests on His authority, mediation, and will. He alone brings believers to the Father. Jhn 14:13-14 And I will do whatever you ask in My name… He will give you. The Father faithfully answers requests offered through His Son and in keeping with His purposes. Mat 7:7-11 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;… Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. During Jesus’ earthly ministry, the disciples brought their needs directly to Him. His approaching departure would change their manner of access to the Father. They would pray in the name of Jesus, trusting His authority, character, and saving work as the Son who reveals the Father. Jhn 14:13-14 And I will do whatever you ask in My name… Ask and you will receive, Jesus assured them that the Father welcomes the requests of those who come through the Son. Answered prayer is governed by God’s will and serves His purposes, not merely human desires. Through Christ’s priestly mediation, believers may approach God with confidence. Mat 7:7-8 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;… so that your joy may be complete. God’s answers deepen the settled joy of those who know Him. Their joy rests in fellowship with the Father, the Son, and the coming help of the Holy Spirit, rather than in temporary circumstances. Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you… I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. Jesus had taught His disciples through parables, comparisons, and symbolic language that revealed spiritual truth while requiring faith and discernment. Much of what He said about His identity, His coming death, and the Father’s work remained only partly understood before the cross. Jhn 10:6 Jesus spoke to them using this illustration…… An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, The coming hour points to the events of His death, resurrection, and exaltation, followed by the Spirit’s work in the disciples. After the resurrection, their understanding would be opened, and the meaning of Jesus’ words would become clear. Luk 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets,… but will tell you plainly about the Father. Through Jesus’ completed work and the Spirit’s instruction, the disciples would know the Father’s character, purpose, and plan of salvation with greater clarity. The apostles’ later preaching reflected this fuller understanding of God revealed through His Son. Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.… In that day After His resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the disciples would understand Jesus’ work more fully and enter the new covenant relationship He secured. Jhn 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in My Father,… you will ask in My name. They would approach the Father on the basis of Jesus’ person, authority, and saving work, with requests shaped by allegiance to Him. Jhn 14:13-14 And I will do whatever you ask in My name… I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. Jesus would not stand between believers and an unwilling Father; through Him, they have direct and confident access to the Father, who loves those who belong to His Son. Jhn 17:9 I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those… For the Father Himself loves you, God’s love for Christ’s followers is direct and personal. Through the Son, believers are brought into fellowship with the Father rather than remaining distant from Him. Jhn 17:23 I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfectly united,… because you have loved Me The disciples had shown genuine devotion to Jesus by leaving their former lives, remaining with Him, and receiving His teaching despite growing opposition. Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,… and have believed that I came from God. They recognized that Jesus had been sent by the Father and spoke with divine authority. Though their understanding was still incomplete, their faith distinguished them from those who rejected His identity and mission. Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,… I came from the Father Jesus declares His eternal origin and unique relationship with the Father. He existed before His earthly birth and came with divine authority as the Son of God. Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,… and entered the world. By taking on human nature, Jesus entered a fallen world to reveal God, fulfill His saving purpose, and live among those He came to redeem. Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king… In turn, I will leave the world His earthly ministry was nearing its appointed end through His death and resurrection. His departure would complete the work of atonement and lead to the sending of the Holy Spirit. Jhn 17:11 I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world,… and go to the Father.” Jesus would ascend to the Father in glory after accomplishing His mission, continuing to reign and intercede for His people. Jhn 14:28 You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back… His disciples said, The disciples responded to Jesus during His final conversation with them before His arrest. Though they had often misunderstood His words, they believed they now understood His teaching about His return to the Father and His continued care for them. Jhn 11:12 His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping…”… “See, now You are speaking plainly Jesus had prepared them through parables, images, and repeated instruction, but He now spoke more directly about His departure, His relationship with the Father, and the events soon to unfold. The disciples recognized the difference and felt assured that they were beginning to understand. Jhn 10:24 So the Jews gathered around Him and demanded,… and without figures of speech. Their confidence was genuine but incomplete. Within hours they would be shaken by Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, and fuller understanding would come after His resurrection and through the Holy Spirit. Mat 13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.… Now we understand that You know all things The disciples recognize that Jesus possesses knowledge beyond human insight, having repeatedly revealed what was hidden in people’s hearts and circumstances. Their understanding of His divine identity has grown through His words and works. Jhn 21:17 Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John…”… and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Jesus had answered their unspoken uncertainty about His teaching, showing that no human examination could establish or increase His authority. Unlike ordinary teachers, He spoke with complete knowledge and from direct fellowship with the Father. Rom 11:34-35 “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been”… Because of this, we believe that You came from God.” The disciples confess that Jesus was sent from the Father and bears divine authority. Their faith is genuine, though still incomplete, as the coming arrest and crucifixion would test their understanding and scatter them. Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,… “Do you finally believe?” Jesus confronts the disciples’ confident declaration that they now understand and believe. Their faith is real, yet it has not been tested by the events about to unfold. Within hours, fear and confusion will scatter them as Jesus is arrested. He knows their weakness, but He also knows that their failure will not be final. Luk 22:31-34 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.… Jesus replied. His answer exposes the difference between professed faith and steadfast faith under pressure. The disciples have recognized that He came from the Father, but they are not yet prepared for His suffering, death, and departure. Jesus prepares them for their coming failure while assuring them that the Father remains with Him. Jhn 20:27-29 Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here.”… “Look, an hour is coming and has already come Jesus points to the decisive time of His arrest and crucifixion, now so near that it is already unfolding. His suffering will occur according to the Father’s appointed plan. Jhn 4:23 But a time is coming and has now come… when you will be scattered, each to his own home, Fear will drive the disciples to flee after His arrest. Though they had pledged loyalty, they will abandon Him and seek safety apart from one another. Zec 13:7 Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, against the man… and you will leave Me all alone. Jesus will face the authorities without the support of His followers. Their failure exposes their weakness, yet it does not overturn His purpose or prevent His sacrifice for sin. Mat 26:56 But this has all happened so that the writings… Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. The disciples’ departure will not separate Jesus from the Father. Even as He goes willingly to the cross, He remains secure in the Father’s presence and carries out the work He was sent to accomplish. Jhn 8:29 He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone,… I have told you these things Jesus concludes His final teaching to the disciples before His arrest, preparing them for His departure, the hostility they will face, and the work of the Holy Spirit among them. Jhn 13:19 I am telling you now before it happens… so that in Me you may have peace. Their security would rest in union with Him, not in favorable circumstances. He gives a settled confidence grounded in His presence, authority, and faithfulness. Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.… In the world you will have tribulation. Opposition, suffering, and persecution would mark the disciples’ lives because the world rejects Christ and those who belong to Him. Jesus does not conceal the cost of following Him. Jhn 15:18-20 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.… But take courage; They were not to surrender to fear or despair. Their courage would arise from confidence in the One who remained in control despite the events about to unfold. Mat 14:27 But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage!”… I have overcome the world!” Through His obedience, death, and resurrection, Jesus defeated sin, Satan, and death. His victory assures His followers that the world’s opposition will not have the final word. 1Jn 5:4-5 because everyone born of God overcomes the world.… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
