Azariah Reigns in Judah

In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam’s reign over Israel,

Jeroboam II ruled during a period of renewed strength and territorial expansion in the northern kingdom, though Israel’s outward success stood alongside deepening spiritual corruption.

Azariah son of Amaziah

Azariah, also called Uzziah, succeeded his father Amaziah in Judah. His long reign brought military security, building projects, and economic prosperity, but his later pride led to divine judgment.

Uzziah, also called Azariah, began ruling Judah as a young man after the death of his father, Amaziah. Though young, he was established as king by the people of Judah and governed during a time when the kingdom recovered strength and influence.

and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years.

His long reign brought military success, expanded defenses, agricultural development, and national prosperity. Yet his later years were marked by judgment when pride led him to unlawfully enter the temple to burn incense, and he lived with leprosy until his death.

His mother’s name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem.

And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,

Azariah’s reign was marked by general faithfulness to the Lord and His covenant. Though shortcomings remained, he did not lead Judah into the idolatry that characterized many rulers.

1Ki 22:43 And Jehoshaphat walked in all the ways of his father Asa;…
2Ki 18:3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…

just as his father Amaziah had done.

Azariah followed the pattern of Amaziah’s earlier obedience, continuing a dynasty that recognized the worship of the LORD. Yet the comparison also anticipates the limitations of his reign, since the high places remained and the people continued to worship there.

2Ch 25:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…
2Ki 14:3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…

Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away;

Azariah’s reign brought stability and strength to Judah, but his reforms did not remove the local shrines scattered throughout the land. Many had long been used for worship, yet they remained outside the pattern of worship God had established around the temple in Jerusalem. Their survival showed that idolatrous and unauthorized practices had not been fully uprooted.

2Ki 14:4 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away…
1Ki 22:43 And Jehoshaphat walked in all the ways of his father Asa;…

the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.

The people persisted in worship at these sites, often mixing devotion to the LORD with customs inherited from the Canaanite culture. Though Azariah did what was right in many respects, the nation’s worship remained divided, leaving Judah vulnerable to continuing spiritual corruption.

And the LORD afflicted the king with leprosy

Azariah’s illness was a divine judgment for his unfaithfulness and presumptuous conduct before the LORD. His royal position did not exempt him from God’s holiness or discipline.

Zechariah Reigns in Israel

In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah’s reign over Judah,

Azariah, also called Uzziah, ruled Judah for fifty-two years. His long reign brought strength and prosperity to Judah, though his pride later resulted in divine judgment. The date places Zechariah’s accession during a period when Judah remained comparatively stable while Israel entered a rapid decline.

Zechariah son of Jeroboam became king of Israel,

Zechariah succeeded his father Jeroboam II, whose reign had restored Israel’s territory and wealth. He was the fourth generation of Jehu’s house to reign, fulfilling the Lord’s word to Jehu. Yet the dynasty’s promised line ended with Zechariah, revealing the continuing judgment upon Israel for its persistence in sin.

Samaria, established as Israel’s capital by Omri, remained the center of the northern kingdom’s government and religious life. From there Israel’s kings continued the idolatrous practices that had drawn the nation away from the Lord.

Pekah Reigns in Israel

In the fifty-second year of Azariah’s reign over Judah,

Judah enjoyed the long and generally stable rule of Azariah, also called Uzziah. While his early reign brought strength, expansion, and prosperity, his later years were overshadowed by the judgment that followed his unlawful attempt to burn incense in the temple.

His rule continued Israel’s pattern of rebellion against the Lord and political instability. He later joined Rezin of Aram in an attempt to force Judah into alliance against Assyria.

2Ch 28:6 For in one day Pekah son of Remaliah…

Samaria remained the capital of the Northern Kingdom during a period of growing Assyrian power. Pekah’s reign ended when Hoshea conspired against him, and the kingdom soon moved toward the destruction and exile that followed.

And he did evil in the sight of the LORD

2Ki 13:2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD…
2Ki 17:22 The Israelites persisted in all the sins…

that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.

Jeroboam’s golden calves at Bethel and Dan had established an idolatrous alternative to worship at Jerusalem. Successive kings preserved this system, and Pekah’s refusal to abandon it showed the lasting damage caused by Jeroboam’s rebellion.

1Ki 16:19 because of the sins he had committed, doing evil…

In the days of Pekah king of Israel,

Pekah ruled the northern kingdom during a period of political turmoil and persistent idolatry. His resistance to Assyrian power and involvement in regional alliances brought Israel into direct conflict with the empire.

Jotham Reigns in Judah

In the second year of the reign of Pekah son of Remaliah over Israel,

Pekah had seized Israel’s throne after assassinating Pekahiah, and his rule unfolded amid growing instability and the rising threat of Assyria. Dating Jotham’s reign by Pekah’s rule links Judah’s history with the troubled northern kingdom.

2Ki 16:1 In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah,…
Isa 7:1 Now in the days that Ahaz son of Jotham,…
2Ki 16:5 Then Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah…

Jotham son of Uzziah became king of Judah.

Jotham continued the Davidic line after Uzziah’s long reign. While Uzziah lived with leprosy, Jotham had already carried many royal responsibilities. He ruled Judah faithfully, strengthened its defenses, and carried out major building projects. Judah remained more stable than Israel, though conflict with Syria and Israel would soon increase.

2Ch 27:1 Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king,…
2Ch 26:23 And Uzziah rested with his fathers and was buried…
Isa 1:1 This is the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem…

He was twenty-five years old when he became king,

Jotham had already governed Judah while his father Uzziah lived in isolation with leprosy, giving him experience in royal duties before he assumed the throne in his own right.

2Ch 25:1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king,…
2Ki 14:2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king,…
2Ki 18:2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king…

and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years.

His reign brought relative order to Judah during a period when Assyria was becoming the dominant power in the region. Jerusalem remained the seat of David’s dynasty and the center of Judah’s worship and government.

2Ch 26:3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king,…
2Ch 24:1 Joash was seven years old when he became king,…
1Ki 14:21 Meanwhile, Rehoboam son of Solomon reigned in Judah.…

His mother’s name was Jerusha daughter of Zadok.

Jerusha’s inclusion preserves the royal record and identifies the family into which Jotham was raised. Her name means “possession” or “inheritance.” Her father’s name, Zadok, associated with righteousness, recalls a respected name in Israel’s history, though the text gives no further details about him.

2Ch 27:1 Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king,…
1Ki 15:2 and he reigned in Jerusalem three years.…
2Ki 21:1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king,…

And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,

Jotham ruled Judah with faithfulness to God’s commands, continuing the pattern of reform and stability established during the earlier part of Uzziah’s reign. His leadership stood in contrast to the widespread idolatry and rebellion found among many rulers of Israel and Judah.

2Ki 18:3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…
2Ki 22:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD…
2Ch 34:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD…

just as his father Uzziah had done.

Uzziah had prospered while seeking the Lord, though pride later brought his discipline and isolation. Jotham followed his father’s godly example without repeating his presumption, governing during the years when Uzziah lived in seclusion because of leprosy.

2Ch 27:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…
2Ch 26:4 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…
2Ch 26:5 He sought God throughout the days of Zechariah…

Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away;

Although Jotham ruled faithfully, he did not remove the unauthorized shrines that remained throughout Judah. These elevated worship sites had long been connected with Canaanite religion and continued to draw the people away from the Lord’s appointed place of worship.

1Ki 15:14 The high places were not removed, but Asa’s heart…
1Ki 22:43 And Jehoshaphat walked in all the ways of his father Asa;…

the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.

Many in Judah mixed devotion to the Lord with familiar local practices. Their continued worship at the high places showed that reform at the national level had not fully changed the religious habits of the people.

2Ki 17:11 They burned incense on all the high places…
1Ki 3:2-3 The people, however, were still sacrificing…

Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD.

Jotham strengthened and improved the temple complex, likely restoring or enlarging its northern entrance. His work showed concern for the worship of the Lord and for the security and order of Jerusalem, even while the broader problem of the high places remained unresolved.

2Ch 27:3 Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD,…
2Ch 23:20 And he took with him the commanders of hundreds…

As for the rest of the acts of Jotham,

Jotham, son of Uzziah, ruled Judah with personal faithfulness to the LORD, though the high places remained and the people continued their corrupt practices. He strengthened Judah through building projects, fortifications, and the construction of the Upper Gate of the Temple.

2Ch 27:7 As for the rest of the acts of Jotham, along with his wars…
2Ch 27:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…

along with his accomplishments,

His reign included victory over the Ammonites, who paid Judah tribute for three years, and efforts to secure the kingdom’s cities and defenses. Yet growing threats from Syria and Israel began to emerge near the end of his reign.

2Ch 27:3-4 Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD,…
2Ch 27:5-6 Jotham waged war against the king of the Ammonites…

are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

The fuller record of Jotham’s reign was preserved in the royal annals of Judah, which documented the deeds, policies, wars, and accomplishments of the Davidic kings.

2Ki 14:18 As for the rest of the acts of Amaziah…
2Ki 20:20 As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah…
