Jeremiah 9
Berean Study Bible

A Lament over Zion

Oh, that my head were a spring of water,

Jeremiah longs for grief that can match the catastrophe awaiting Judah. A spring would provide an unceasing supply, portraying sorrow too great for ordinary tears.

Lam 3:49 My eyes overflow unceasingly, without relief,
Lam 1:16 For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears.…
Psa 119:136 My eyes shed streams of tears because Your law is not obeyed…

and my eyes a fountain of tears!

His mourning arises from the people’s rebellion against God and the judgment their sin has brought upon them. He bears the burden of seeing their ruin before it comes.

Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…
2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress…

I would weep day and night

Jeremiah envisions unbroken lamentation because Judah’s coming devastation will not be momentary. Babylon’s invasion, slaughter, and exile will expose the full cost of the nation’s persistent disobedience.

Jer 14:17 My eyes overflow with tears; day and night they do not cease…
Psa 42:3 My tears have been my food both day and night,…
Lam 2:18 The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.…

over the slain daughter of my people.

“Daughter of my people” expresses Jeremiah’s covenantal and personal attachment to Judah. Though he announces God’s judgment, he does not rejoice in it; he grieves for the people who will perish because they refused the Lord’s warnings.

Lam 3:48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the destruction…
Lam 2:11 My eyes fail from weeping; I am churning within.…
Isa 22:4 Therefore I said, “Turn away from me, let me weep bitterly!…

If only I had a traveler’s lodge in the wilderness,

Jeremiah longs for a remote shelter where he could withdraw from the corruption of Jerusalem and Judah. The wilderness represented separation from the nation’s public life and its persistent rebellion against the Lord.

Psa 55:6-7 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!…
Psa 102:6-7 I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.…
1Ki 19:4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness.…

I would abandon my people and depart from them,

The prophet feels the crushing burden of ministering among people who refuse correction. Though called to warn them, he grieves over their condition and desires relief from the continual hostility surrounding him.

Num 16:26 And he warned the congregation, “Move away now…
Isa 52:11 Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing;…
2Co 6:17 Therefore come out from among them and be separate…

for they are all adulterers,

Their adultery is spiritual: they have broken covenant with the Lord by turning to idols and false worship. Their unfaithfulness is not isolated but marks the life of the nation.

Hos 7:4 They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by a baker…
Jer 5:7-8 Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken Me…
Jas 4:4 You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship…

a crowd of faithless people.

Judah has become a society characterized by treachery toward God and one another. The widespread rebellion confirms the justice of the judgment Jeremiah has been sent to announce.

Mic 7:2-5 The godly man has perished from the earth…
Deu 32:20 He said: “I will hide My face from them;…
Psa 78:57 They turned back and were faithless like their fathers,…

“They bend their tongues like bows;

Judah’s people used speech as a weapon, deliberately shaping lies to wound, exploit, and destroy. Their deceit was calculated rather than careless, revealing hearts hardened against righteousness.

Psa 64:3 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Psa 52:2 Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor,…
Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts…

lies prevail over truth in the land.

Falsehood had become common throughout Judah, corrupting public life, relationships, and justice. The nation that had received God’s law no longer valued honesty or faithfulness.

Jer 5:1 Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem.…
Isa 59:14 So justice is turned away, and righteousness stands…
Psa 12:1-2 Help, O LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful…

For they proceed from evil to evil,

Sin had not remained isolated but increased from one act of rebellion to another. Their rejection of God produced a continuing pattern of moral decline.

2Ti 3:13 while evil men and imposters go from bad to worse…
Psa 36:4 Even on his bed he plots wickedness; he sets himself…
Gen 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…

and they do not take Me into account,” declares the LORD.

Their corruption sprang from refusing to recognize the LORD’s authority or live according to His covenant. Jeremiah records God’s indictment of a people whose rebellion would bring judgment upon Judah.

Psa 10:4 In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him;…
Isa 1:3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger…
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…

“Let everyone guard against his neighbor;

Judah’s corruption had reached into ordinary relationships, leaving people vulnerable even among those closest to them. Political instability, idolatry, and rejection of God’s law had weakened the bonds that held the nation together.

Mic 7:5-6 Do not rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion.…
Pro 25:9-10 Argue your case with your neighbor without betraying…
Pro 26:24-26 A hateful man disguises himself with his speech…

do not trust any brother,

Treachery was no longer limited to strangers or enemies. Fellow Israelites, including relatives, could not be assumed faithful, revealing how deeply covenant obligations of truth and loyalty had been neglected.

Mat 10:21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father…
Mrk 13:12 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father…
Luk 21:16 You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers…

for every brother deals craftily,

Deceit had become deliberate and habitual. Instead of protecting one another, people used cunning for personal advantage, reflecting the moral condition that brought God’s judgment upon Judah.

Gen 27:35 But Isaac replied, “Your brother came deceitfully”…
Gen 37:18-20 Now Joseph’s brothers saw him in the distance,…
Oba 1:7 All the men allied with you will drive you to the border;…

and every friend spreads slander.

Friendships were marked by harmful speech and false reports that destroyed reputations and trust. The nation’s social collapse exposed the need for the inward renewal God later promised through the new covenant.

Pro 16:28 A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip…
Pro 11:13 A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person…
Psa 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,…

Each one betrays his friend;

Judah’s corruption had reached into ordinary relationships, where loyalty and trust had given way to treachery. The covenant community was fractured because its people had turned from the God who required faithfulness toward both Him and neighbor.

Mic 7:5-6 Do not rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion.…
Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…
Psa 55:12-14 For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure.…

no one tells the truth.

Deceit had become widespread, leaving public and private life governed by suspicion rather than justice. Their rejection of God’s word was evident in their refusal to speak honestly.

Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Isa 59:14-15 So justice is turned away, and righteousness stands…

They have taught their tongues to lie;

Lying was no longer occasional wrongdoing but a settled habit passed on and practiced without shame. The people deliberately shaped their speech for deception, revealing hearts resistant to correction.

Psa 50:19-20 You unleash your mouth for evil and harness your tongue…
Psa 109:2 For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me;…

they wear themselves out committing iniquity.

Their persistent sin brought no lasting gain, only the exhaustion and ruin that follow rebellion against God.

Pro 4:16-17 For they cannot sleep unless they do evil;…
Mic 2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds…
Job 15:16 How much less man, who is vile and corrupt…

You dwell in the midst of deception;

Judah’s public and private life had become saturated with lies, betrayal, and injustice. The people’s unfaithfulness to one another reflected their deeper rebellion against God.

Mic 6:12 For the wealthy of the city are full of violence,…
Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…
Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…

in their deceit they refuse to know Me,”

Their ignorance of God was willful, not accidental. By embracing falsehood and rejecting His commands, they chose a life removed from His truth and authority.

Job 21:14 Yet they say to God: ‘Leave us alone! For we have no desire…
Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…
Rom 1:28 Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God,…

declares the LORD.

The judgment is God’s own declaration. Jeremiah speaks as His messenger, warning Judah that their continued rebellion would bring the consequences God had announced.

Zec 8:17 do not plot evil in your hearts against your neighbor…
Jer 14:14 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…

Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

The Lord speaks as the sovereign ruler over all heavenly powers, announcing His judgment against Judah’s persistent sin.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Hag 2:6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more…
Zec 8:14 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

“Behold, I will refine them and test them,

Judah’s coming hardship would serve as a refining fire, exposing rebellion and separating what was false from what remained faithful. The judgment was severe, yet it was directed toward a people God still called His own.

Zec 13:9 This third I will bring through the fire;…
Mal 3:3 And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver;…
Dan 11:35 Some of the wise will fall so that they may be refined…

for what else can I do because of the daughter of My people?

Jerusalem and Judah, “the daughter of My people,” a term of endearment indicating God’s close relationship with them, had rejected repeated warnings and continued in idolatry, injustice, and deceit. Because gentler correction had not brought repentance, God would use discipline to confront their sin before the Babylonian invasion.

Hos 6:4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? For your loyalty…
Isa 5:4 What more could have been done for My vineyard…
Ezk 24:13 Because of the indecency of your uncleanness…

Their tongues are deadly arrows;

Words had become weapons in Judah, used deliberately to injure, slander, and destroy. The image exposes a society marked by betrayal rather than faithfulness.

Psa 64:3-4 who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim…
Pro 25:18 Like a club or sword or sharp arrow is a man…
Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts…

they speak deception.

Lies had spread through public and private life, reflecting Judah’s rejection of God’s truth and the corruption that followed.

Psa 12:2-3 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Pro 26:18-19 Like a madman shooting firebrands and deadly arrows,…
Psa 52:2-4 Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor,…

With his mouth a man speaks peace to his neighbor,

Friendly greetings concealed hostile intentions. Outward civility remained, but genuine trust and covenant loyalty were absent.

Psa 28:3 Do not drag me away with the wicked, and with the workers…
Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.…
2Sa 20:9-10 “Are you well, my brother?” Joab asked Amasa.…

but in his heart he sets a trap for him.

Harm was planned in secret. God’s indictment reaches beyond public speech to the hidden motives that produced deceit and violence.

Pro 26:24-26 A hateful man disguises himself with his speech…
Psa 140:3-5 They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers…
Mic 7:2-3 The godly man has perished from the earth…

Should I not punish them for these things?

Judah’s corruption was public and persistent: deceit, adultery, violence, and idolatry had spread through the nation. The Lord’s judgment was not arbitrary but the righteous response to covenant rebellion. A holy God would not overlook sin that His people had deliberately embraced.

Hos 9:7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution…
Isa 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked…
Ezk 7:3-4 The end is now upon you, and I will unleash My anger.…

declares the LORD.

The warning carried God’s own authority. Jeremiah delivered the message, but the coming judgment was the Lord’s settled decree against Judah’s unfaithfulness.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Jer 23:28 Let the prophet who has a dream retell it, …
Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…

Should I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?”

Judah had been set apart to know and obey the Lord, yet it had dishonored Him among the nations. Divine vengeance would vindicate God’s holiness and deal justly with a people who had rejected His law and repeatedly refused correction.

Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time…
Nam 1:2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging…
Psa 94:1-2 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth.…

I will take up a weeping and wailing for the mountains,

Jeremiah mourns the coming ruin of Judah’s highlands, which had been settled, cultivated, and used for pasture. Places that had appeared enduring would be emptied under God’s judgment.

Ezk 6:2-3 Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel……
Mic 1:3-4 For behold, the LORD comes forth from His dwelling place;…
Jer 4:24 I looked at the mountains, and behold, they were quaking…

a dirge over the wilderness pasture,

Even the open grazing lands would become scenes of death rather than provision. The lament reaches beyond Jerusalem to the whole land, showing that the devastation would be national.

Jol 1:19-20 To You, O LORD, I call, for fire has consumed……
Jer 23:10 For the land is full of adulterers—because of the curse,…
Amo 1:2 He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice…

for they have been scorched so no one passes through,

War and judgment would leave the land desolate, with roads abandoned and normal life ended. The loss of travelers points to the collapse of safety, commerce, and community.

Jer 2:6 They did not ask, ‘Where is the LORD who brought us……
Isa 33:8 The highways are deserted; travel has ceased.…
Zec 7:14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind…

and the lowing of cattle is not heard.

Herds that supplied food, labor, and sacrifices would be gone. Their silence portrays a land stripped of its ordinary life and worship.

Job 6:5 Does a wild donkey bray over fresh grass, …
Jol 1:18 How the cattle groan! The herds wander in confusion…
Hab 3:17 Though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,…

Both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled; they have gone away.

The judgment would be so severe that even wildlife would abandon the region. Creation itself reflects the consequences of Judah’s rebellion against the Lord.

Jer 4:25 I looked, and no man was left; all the birds of the air…
Hos 4:3 Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it…
Zep 1:3 “I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away…”…

“And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble,

God announced the coming destruction of Jerusalem because Judah had forsaken Him for idolatry and rebellion. The warning was fulfilled when Babylon captured and destroyed the city in 586 BC, leaving its buildings, walls, and temple in ruins.

Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
Jer 26:18 Micah the Moreshite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah…
Isa 64:10-11 Your holy cities have become a wilderness.…

a haunt for jackals;

The abandoned city would become a place of wilderness and wild animals, displaying the completeness of its desolation.

Jer 10:22 Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion…
Jer 49:33 Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever.…
Isa 34:13-14 Her towers will be overgrown with thorns…

and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation,

Judgment would extend beyond Jerusalem to the towns and settlements throughout Judah. Babylon’s campaigns devastated the land and removed much of its population.

Jer 44:6 Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned…
Jer 4:7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer…
Isa 1:7-8 Your land is desolate; your cities are burned with fire.…

without inhabitant.”

The surviving people would be killed, flee, or be taken into exile, leaving the land largely empty. The devastation showed the certainty of God’s judgment while preparing the way for the later return and restoration of a remnant.

Jer 33:10 This is what the LORD says: In this place you say…
Isa 13:20 She will never be inhabited or settled…
Jer 51:43 Her cities have become a desolation, a dry and arid land…

Who is the man wise enough to understand this?

Judah’s ruin required more than human observation to comprehend. Only wisdom given by God could explain why the covenant land would become desolate.

Deu 32:29 If only they were wise, they would understand it…
Hos 14:9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;…
Ecc 8:1 Who is like the wise man? Who knows the interpretation…

To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may explain it?

The Lord had made His will known through Jeremiah and the other prophets. Their warnings identified Judah’s sin and announced the judgment that would follow.

Num 12:6-8 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…
Deu 18:18-19 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

Why is the land destroyed and scorched like a desert, so no one can pass through it?

The devastation came because Judah abandoned the law of the Lord and followed other gods. The Babylonian invasion would bring the covenant judgments long warned of, leaving cities ruined, fields emptied, and the land largely uninhabited.

Deu 29:23-28 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt,…
Lev 26:31-33 I will reduce your cities to rubble and lay waste…
Isa 24:1-6 Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it…

And the LORD answered,

God responded to Jeremiah’s inquiry by identifying the cause of Judah’s coming judgment. The answer carries the authority of the covenant God who had repeatedly warned His people through Moses and the prophets.

Job 38:1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:
Psa 99:6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests;…

“It is because they have forsaken My law,

Judah’s crisis arose from deliberate covenant unfaithfulness. God had given Israel His Torah, the divine instructions given to Moses, as the rule for life in the land, yet the people abandoned His instruction for idolatry and rebellion.

Hos 8:1 Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms…
Neh 9:26 But they were disobedient and rebelled against You;…

which I set before them;

The law had been openly given to Israel through Moses and was not hidden from them. Their guilt was not ignorance but rejection of what God had clearly revealed.

Deu 4:8 And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes…
Deu 11:32 be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances…

they have not walked in it

Their conduct did not conform to God’s commands. Their disobedience was habitual, shaping the nation’s worship, justice, and moral life.

Lev 26:3 If you follow My statutes and carefully keep…
Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…

or obeyed My voice.

They refused God’s repeated calls to repent and return. By disregarding His voice through the prophets, Judah rejected the Lord Himself and brought the covenant curses upon the nation.

Exo 19:5 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…
Deu 28:1 Now if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God…

Instead, they have followed the stubbornness of their hearts

Judah’s disobedience was deliberate, flowing from hearts set against God’s commands. Their inward rebellion hardened them against correction and led them to trust their own desires rather than God’s revealed will.

Deu 29:19 because when such a person hears the words…
Jer 16:12 And you have done more evil than your fathers.…
Deu 31:27 For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are.…

and gone after the Baals,

Baal worship drew Israel into the religious practices of Canaan, centered on deities believed to govern fertility, rain, and crops. By serving the Baals, the people abandoned exclusive loyalty to the Lord and embraced idolatry that corrupted both worship and conduct.

1Ki 18:18 “I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you…”…
Jdg 2:11-13 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD…
Jdg 3:7 So the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD;…

as their fathers taught them.”

Idolatry had been passed down through generations, becoming an established pattern within the nation. The people repeated their ancestors’ sins rather than turning from them, bringing upon themselves the judgment long warned by the prophets.

2Ki 17:41 So these nations worshiped the LORD but also served…
Ezk 20:18-19 In the wilderness I said to their children: ‘Do not walk…
Jdg 2:19 But when the judge died, the Israelites became corrupt…

Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

The Lord speaks as Israel’s covenant God and as the ruler of all heavenly powers. His authority makes the coming judgment certain, especially because Judah has broken the covenant by abandoning Him for false gods.

Jer 7:3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel:…
Hag 1:5 Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

“Behold, I will feed this people wormwood

Their rebellion will bring bitter suffering that cannot be avoided. What they chose through idolatry and injustice will become the daily reality of national calamity.

Jer 23:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Lam 3:15 He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me…
Lam 3:19 Remember my affliction and wandering, …

and give them poisoned water to drink.

The judgment will reach every part of life, like contaminated water in a land dependent on its wells and cisterns. Instead of safety and provision, Judah will face ruin, loss, and the deadly consequences of rejecting the Lord.

Jer 8:14 Why are we just sitting here? Gather together, let us flee…
Num 5:24-27 He is to have the woman drink the bitter water…
Rev 8:11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters…

I will scatter them among the nations

God would drive Judah from the land He had given them because of their idolatry and covenant rebellion. The Babylonian conquest fulfilled this warning as many were carried into exile and scattered, or dispersed (diaspora), among surrounding peoples.

Ezk 20:23 However, with an uplifted hand I swore to them…
Ezk 12:15 And they will know that I am the LORD, when I disperse them…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

that neither they nor their fathers have known,

Exile would take them far from their homeland, temple, and familiar way of life into lands ruled by pagan nations. Their removal from the promised land displayed the seriousness of abandoning the Lord.

Deu 13:6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter,…
Jer 44:3 They provoked Me to anger by continuing to burn incense…
Deu 28:36 The LORD will bring you and the king you appoint to a nation…

and I will send a sword after them

Those who escaped the initial invasion would not be secure in foreign lands. War, pursuit, and death would continue until God’s appointed judgment had run its course.

Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague…
Lev 26:25 And I will bring a sword against you to execute…
Deu 32:41-42 When I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand grasps it…

until I have finished them off.”

The judgment would be thorough against the generation that persisted in sin, ending their current state of rebellion and idolatry rather than bringing total annihilation. Yet God would preserve a remnant and later restore His people, showing that His discipline did not cancel His covenant purposes.

Deu 28:45 All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you…
Deu 28:20 The LORD will send curses upon you, confusion and reproof…
Deu 28:63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper…

This is what the LORD of Hosts says:

God speaks as the sovereign ruler over all powers, announcing a message that carries His full authority. Judah’s persistent rebellion has brought the nation to the brink of judgment.

Hag 1:2 this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say,…
Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…

“Take note,

The people are commanded to give serious attention to what follows. The coming disaster is no distant possibility but an approaching reality.

Hag 1:5 Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully…
Amo 3:1 Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you,…
Pro 4:1 Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;…

and summon the wailing women;

Professional mourners were called upon in times of death and national calamity to lead public lament. Their summons anticipates widespread grief throughout Judah.

Amo 5:16 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts…
Ecc 12:5 when men fear the heights and dangers of the road……
Mat 9:23 When Jesus entered the house of the synagogue leader…

send for the most skillful among them.

The scale of the judgment demands mourners experienced in expressing communal sorrow. Jerusalem’s ruin and the loss of its people will require lamentation beyond ordinary mourning.

2Ch 35:25 Then Jeremiah lamented over Josiah, and to this day…
2Sa 1:17 Then David took up this lament for Saul and Jonathan…

Let them come quickly and take up a lament over us,

Jerusalem faced imminent judgment for persistent rebellion against the Lord. Professional mourning women were summoned to lead public lament, giving voice to the grief that would soon overwhelm the city and its people.

Ezk 27:32 As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament:…
2Sa 1:17 Then David took up this lament for Saul and Jonathan…
Amo 5:16 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Hosts…

that our eyes may overflow with tears,

The coming disaster called for more than formal mourning. Tears reflected the sorrow of a nation brought low by its sin and by the loss that judgment would bring.

Lam 1:16 For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears.…
Psa 119:136 My eyes shed streams of tears because Your law is not obeyed…
Psa 6:6 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood…

and our eyelids may gush with water.

The picture is of unrestrained weeping. Jeremiah portrays grief so deep that it cannot be contained, anticipating the devastation of Jerusalem and the anguish of its survivors.

Lam 2:18 The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.…
Lam 3:48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the destruction…
Psa 42:3 My tears have been my food both day and night,…

For the sound of wailing is heard from Zion:

Jerusalem is pictured as already crying out under the terror of judgment. The coming Babylonian invasion would bring siege, slaughter, exile, and the destruction of the city in 586 BC.

Lam 1:4 The roads to Zion mourn, because no one comes…
Jer 25:34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry out; roll in the dust…
Jol 1:8 Wail like a virgin dressed in sackcloth,…

‘How devastated we are!

The people mourn the ruin of their city, fields, homes, and national life. What had been entrusted to Israel as a place of covenant blessing lay exposed to judgment because of persistent rebellion and idolatry.

Lam 1:1 How lonely lies the city, once so full of people!…
Jer 4:20 Disaster after disaster is proclaimed…
Isa 64:10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness.…

How great is our shame!

Defeat before a foreign power brought public humiliation. Israel’s disgrace was especially bitter because the nation had rejected the LORD’s warnings and experienced the consequences He had declared through His prophets.

Dan 9:7 To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but this day…
Jer 3:25 Let us lie down in our shame; let our disgrace cover us.…
Ezk 36:32 It is not for your sake that I will act,…

For we have abandoned the land

Many would flee before the invaders, while others would be carried away into Babylon. Departure from the land marked the reversal of Israel’s settlement in the land God had given them.

2Ki 25:21 There at Riblah in the land of Hamath, the king…
Deu 28:63-64 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper…
Hos 9:3 They will not remain in the land of the LORD;…

because our dwellings have been torn down.’”

Babylonian warfare left homes and towns ruined, removing the security of ordinary life. The destruction of Jerusalem and Judah showed that neither the city nor its houses could protect a people who had forsaken the LORD.

2Ki 25:9 He burned down the house of the LORD, the royal palace,…
Lam 5:2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers,…
Mic 1:6 Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble…

Now, O women, hear the word of the LORD.

Jeremiah summons the women of Judah because they would lead and preserve the public mourning that coming judgment required. God’s warning was urgent: Jerusalem’s sin would bring death into households and grief throughout the nation.

Isa 32:9-11 Stand up, you complacent women; listen to me.…
Deu 31:12 Assemble the people—men, women, children…
Deu 29:10-12 All of you are standing today before the LORD your God…

Open your ears to the word of His mouth.

The people were not merely to hear a report of disaster but to receive God’s own decree and respond to it. Their refusal to heed His warnings had brought them to the edge of ruin.

Psa 78:1 A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my instruction;…
Deu 8:3 He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna…
Job 23:12 I have not departed from the command of His lips;…

Teach your daughters to wail,

The scale of the coming calamity would require every generation to know how to mourn. Women who ordinarily taught their daughters the duties of family life were now to prepare them for widespread bereavement.

Jdg 11:40 that each year the young women of Israel go out…
2Sa 1:24 O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you…
Amo 8:10 I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs…

and one another to lament.

Grief would not be confined to isolated families. Judah would mourn together as death spread through the land, fulfilling the judgment God had announced through Jeremiah.

2Ch 35:25 Then Jeremiah lamented over Josiah, and to this day…
Ezk 27:32 As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament:…
Mic 1:8-9 Because of this I will lament and wail; I will walk barefoot…

For death has climbed in through our windows;

Death is pictured as an intruder no household can keep out. Jerusalem’s coming judgment would reach beyond city walls and ordinary defenses, bringing devastation into homes throughout the city.

2Ki 9:30-33 Now when Jehu arrived in Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it.…
Jdg 5:28-30 Sisera’s mother looked through the window;…

it has entered our fortresses

Even the strongest places in Jerusalem would offer no protection when God’s judgment came. Though the city was fortified, its defenses could not prevent the Babylonian invasion decreed because of Judah’s persistent rebellion.

Mic 5:11 I will remove the cities of your land…
Nam 3:12 All your fortresses are fig trees with the first ripe figs;…

to cut off the children from the streets,

The disaster would silence the normal life of the city. Children would no longer be found playing in its streets, showing that the judgment would affect every household and generation.

Lam 2:11-12 My eyes fail from weeping; I am churning within.…
Nam 3:10 Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity.…

the young men from the town squares.

The removal of young men from the public squares points to death, captivity, and the collapse of civic life. Those who represented the city’s strength and future would be taken away, leaving Jerusalem desolate.

Jer 6:11 But I am full of the LORD’s wrath; I am tired…
Pro 7:12 Now in the street, now in the squares, she lurks.…

Declare that this is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah delivers God’s own verdict, not a personal opinion. As the Lord’s prophet, he announces the judgment that Judah’s persistent rebellion has brought upon the nation.

Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…

“The corpses of men will fall like dung upon the open field,

The coming destruction will be so extensive that the dead will lie exposed and dishonored. Unburied bodies would testify to the collapse of normal life, leaving the land marked by defeat and shame.

2Ki 9:37 And Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field…
Jer 16:4 They will not be mourned or buried, but will lie…
Psa 83:10 who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground.

like newly cut grain behind the reaper,

People will fall in great numbers under God’s judgment, as grain falls before the harvest blade. The image conveys the speed and completeness of the devastation.

Rut 2:7 She has said, ‘Please let me glean and gather…
Lev 19:9-10 When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to…

with no one to gather it.”

No family or community will remain to bury the dead. Jerusalem’s fall will bring abandonment, grief, and desolation across the land.

Jer 25:33 Those slain by the LORD on that day will be spread…
Ezk 29:5 I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish…

This is what the LORD says:

Jeremiah delivers God’s own judgment against the false securities that marked Judah’s leaders and people during its decline.

Jer 2:2 “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem……
Ezk 2:4 They are obstinate and stubborn children.…
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom,

Human insight, political skill, and counsel could not save a nation that refused the Lord’s instruction.

1Co 1:31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts…
Pro 3:7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD…
1Co 3:18-19 Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise…

nor the strong man in his strength,

Military power, personal courage, and national defenses were inadequate against the judgment God had announced.

1Sa 2:9 He guards the steps of His faithful ones…
Psa 33:16-17 No king is saved by his vast army; no warrior…
Zec 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,…

nor the wealthy man in his riches.

Prosperity and possessions offered no lasting protection. Wisdom, strength, and wealth become empty grounds for confidence when they replace dependence on the Lord.

1Ti 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…
Psa 62:10 Place no trust in extortion or false hope in stolen goods.…

But let him who boasts boast in this,

Human achievement, wisdom, power, and wealth provide no lasting grounds for confidence. The only worthy boast is found in God and His work.

1Co 1:31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts…
2Co 10:17 Rather, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Psa 34:2 My soul boasts in the LORD; let the oppressed…

that he understands and knows Me,

True knowledge of God involves recognizing His character, His will, and His covenant relationship with His people. It is more than information; it is faithful acknowledgment of the living God.

Hos 6:3 So let us know—let us press on to know the LORD.…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…
Pro 2:5 then you will discern the fear of the LORD…

that I am the LORD,

The LORD identifies Himself by His covenant name, the God who revealed Himself to Israel, delivered them from Egypt, and remained faithful despite their repeated rebellion.

Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Ezk 20:12 I also gave them My Sabbaths as a sign between us,…
Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; there is no God but Me…

who exercises loving devotion,

God’s steadfast love is shown in His mercy, patience, and faithfulness to His promises. Though Judah had sinned greatly, the LORD’s character remained unchanged.

Exo 34:6 Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out:…
Psa 103:8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger…
Mic 7:18 Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity…

justice and righteousness on the earth—

God rules with perfect justice and moral righteousness. Judah’s leaders and people had neglected these qualities through idolatry, oppression, and corruption, bringing judgment upon the nation.

Psa 33:5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice;…
Psa 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne…
Gen 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will…

for I delight in these things,”

The LORD takes pleasure in love, justice, and righteousness because they reflect His own character and the kind of obedience He requires from His people.

Pro 11:20 The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD,…

The declaration carries the authority of God Himself and confirms the certainty of both His judgment and His standards.

Isa 49:8 This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor…

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD,

The LORD announces a certain future time of judgment. His declaration carries divine authority and prepares for the exposure of covenant unfaithfulness among His own people as well as the surrounding nations.

Jer 23:5 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Jer 33:14 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…

“when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh—

Circumcision marked Abraham’s descendants as members of God’s covenant people and was meant to be an outward sign of inward faith and commitment to God, but Judah had treated the outward sign as a substitute for obedience. Though physically circumcised, many remained rebellious in heart and practiced the sins of the nations. The covenant sign would not shield them from judgment when their lives denied the God it represented.

Deu 30:6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts…
Deu 10:16 Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and stiffen your necks.…
Rom 2:28-29 A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly,…

Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab, and all the inhabitants of the desert who clip the hair of their temples.

Egypt represented a dominant pagan power; Edom, Ammon, and Moab were Israel’s neighboring rivals, often hostile to Judah. The desert peoples practiced customs associated with pagan worship, including forbidden hair-cutting rites. Judah stands among them because its covenant privileges had not restrained its idolatry and disobedience.

Jer 25:18-24 make them a ruin, an object of horror and contempt…
Deu 23:3-8 No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants…
Lev 19:27 You must not cut off the hair at the sides…

For all these nations are uncircumcised,

These nations stood outside the covenant God established with Abraham and remained devoted to false gods and corrupt practices.

Ezk 32:19-32 Whom do you surpass in beauty? Go down and be placed…
Ezk 31:18 Who then is like you in glory and greatness…
Ezk 28:10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised……

and the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”

Israel possessed the outward sign of circumcision, yet its people often lacked faith, obedience, and devotion to the Lord. Their inward rebellion placed them under the same judgment as the surrounding nations.

Lev 26:41 and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them…
Ezk 44:7-9 In addition to all your other abominations,…
Deu 10:16 Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and stiffen your necks.…
