Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.1They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
As soon as He got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met Him. 2And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
He lived in the tombs. No one was able to restrain him anymore--even with chains--3He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had snapped off the chains and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 4for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
And always, night and day, he was crying out among the tombs and in the mountains and cutting himself with stones. 5Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before Him. 6And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
And he cried out with a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God, don't torment me!"7And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
For He had told him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" 8For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
"What is your name?" He asked him." My name is Legion," he answered Him, "because we are many." 9And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
And he kept begging Him not to send them out of the region. 10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
Now a large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. 11Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,
The demons begged Him, "Send us to the pigs, so we may enter them." 12and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”
And He gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd of about 2,000 rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there. 13So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
The men who tended them ran off and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened. 14The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.
They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed by the legion, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.15And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
The eyewitnesses described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and told about the pigs. 16And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.
Then they began to beg Him to leave their region. 17And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.
As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging Him to be with Him. 18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.
But He would not let him; instead, He told him, "Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you."19And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
So he went out and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed. 20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea. 21And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.
One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet22Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet
and kept begging Him, "My little daughter is at death's door. Come and lay Your hands on her so she can get well and live." 23and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”
So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against Him. 24And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.
A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years25And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 26and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.
Having heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His robe.27She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
For she said, "If I can just touch His robes, I'll be made well!"28For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured of her affliction. 29And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
At once Jesus realized in Himself that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My robes?" 30And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”
His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, Who touched Me?'" 31And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’”
So He was looking around to see who had done this. 32And he looked around to see who had done it.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling, fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth. 33But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
"Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your affliction." 34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?" 35While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, "Don't be afraid. Only believe."36But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, James's brother. 37And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
They came to the leader's house, and He saw a commotion--people weeping and wailing loudly. 38They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.
He went in and said to them, "Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep." 39And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
They started laughing at Him, but He put them all outside. He took the child's father, mother, and those who were with Him, and entered the place where the child was. 40And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.
Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").41Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was 12 years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.42And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement.
Then He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and said that she should be given something to eat. 43And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
