Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.1So they came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.
As soon as He got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met Him. 2Just as Jesus was getting out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs and met him.
He lived in the tombs. No one was able to restrain him anymore--even with chains--3He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.
because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had snapped off the chains and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 4For his hands and feet had often been bound with chains and shackles, but he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
And always, night and day, he was crying out among the tombs and in the mountains and cutting himself with stones. 5Each night and every day among the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before Him. 6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him.
And he cried out with a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God, don't torment me!"7Then he cried out with a loud voice, "Leave me alone, Jesus, Son of the Most High God! I implore you by God--do not torment me!"
For He had told him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" 8(For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of that man, you unclean spirit!")
"What is your name?" He asked him." My name is Legion," he answered Him, "because we are many." 9Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "My name is Legion, for we are many."
And he kept begging Him not to send them out of the region. 10He begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the region.
Now a large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. 11There on the hillside, a great herd of pigs was feeding.
The demons begged Him, "Send us to the pigs, so we may enter them." 12And the demonic spirits begged him, "Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them."
And He gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd of about 2,000 rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there. 13Jesus gave them permission. So the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, and about two thousand were drowned in the lake.
The men who tended them ran off and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened. 14Now the herdsmen ran off and spread the news in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed by the legion, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.15They came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind--the one who had the "Legion"--and they were afraid.
The eyewitnesses described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and told about the pigs. 16Those who had seen what had happened to the demon-possessed man reported it, and they also told about the pigs.
Then they began to beg Him to leave their region. 17Then they asked Jesus to leave their region.
As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging Him to be with Him. 18As he was getting into the boat the man who had been demon-possessed asked if he could go with him.
But He would not let him; instead, He told him, "Go back home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you."19But Jesus did not permit him to do so. Instead, he said to him, "Go to your home and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you, that he had mercy on you."
So he went out and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed. 20So he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and all were amazed.
When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him while He was by the sea. 21When Jesus had crossed again in a boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was by the sea.
One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet22Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came up, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.
and kept begging Him, "My little daughter is at death's door. Come and lay Your hands on her so she can get well and live." 23He asked him urgently, "My little daughter is near death. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be healed and live."
So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against Him. 24Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around him.
A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years25Now a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years.
had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 26She had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet instead of getting better, she grew worse.
Having heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His robe.27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
For she said, "If I can just touch His robes, I'll be made well!"28for she kept saying, "If only I touch his clothes, I will be healed."
Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured of her affliction. 29At once the bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
At once Jesus realized in Himself that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My robes?" 30Jesus knew at once that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?"
His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing against You, and You say, Who touched Me?'" 31His disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing against you and you say, 'Who touched me?'"
So He was looking around to see who had done this. 32But he looked around to see who had done it.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling, fell down before Him, and told Him the whole truth. 33Then the woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
"Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be free from your affliction." 34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease."
While He was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?" 35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler's house saying, "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?"
But when Jesus overheard what was said, He told the synagogue leader, "Don't be afraid. Only believe."36But Jesus, paying no attention to what was said, told the synagogue ruler, "Do not be afraid; just believe."
He did not let anyone accompany Him except Peter, James, and John, James's brother. 37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
They came to the leader's house, and He saw a commotion--people weeping and wailing loudly. 38They came to the house of the synagogue ruler where he saw noisy confusion and people weeping and wailing loudly.
He went in and said to them, "Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep." 39When he entered he said to them, "Why are you distressed and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep."
They started laughing at Him, but He put them all outside. He took the child's father, mother, and those who were with Him, and entered the place where the child was. 40And they began making fun of him. But he put them all outside and he took the child's father and mother and his own companions and went into the room where the child was.
Then He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").41Then, gently taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up."
Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was 12 years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.42The girl got up at once and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). They were completely astonished at this.
Then He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and said that she should be given something to eat. 43He strictly ordered that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
