1Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.1Καὶ εὐθὺς πρωῒ συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες* οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ
2"Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "You have said so," Jesus replied.2Καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν Πιλᾶτος Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ λέγει Σὺ λέγεις
3The chief priests accused him of many things.3Καὶ κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς πολλά
4So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of."4 δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν ἴδε πόσα σου κατηγοροῦσιν
5But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.5 δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίθη ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν Πιλᾶτον
6Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.6Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο
7A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.7ἦν δὲ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν
8The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.8καὶ ἀναβὰς ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς
9"Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate,9 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων
10knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.10ἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς
11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.11Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς
12"What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?"
13"Crucify him!" they shouted.13Οἱ δὲ πάλιν ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν
14"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"14 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί γὰρ ἐποίησεν κακόν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν
15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.15 δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ
16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.16Οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν ἔσω τῆς αὐλῆς ἐστιν Πραιτώριον καὶ συνκαλοῦσιν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν
17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.17καὶ ἐνδιδύσκουσιν αὐτὸν πορφύραν καὶ περιτιθέασιν αὐτῷ πλέξαντες ἀκάνθινον στέφανον
18And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"18καὶ ἤρξαντο ἀσπάζεσθαι αὐτόν Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.19Καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν καλάμῳ καὶ ἐνέπτυον αὐτῷ καὶ τιθέντες τὰ γόνατα προσεκύνουν αὐτῷ
20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.20καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν πορφύραν καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ‹ἴδια› Καὶ ἐξάγουσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα σταυρώσωσιν αὐτόν
21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.21Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ
22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means "the place of the skull").22Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Γολγοθᾶν τόπον ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον* Κρανίου τόπος
23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.23καὶ ἐδίδουν αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν
24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.24Καὶ σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπ’ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ
25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.25Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν
26The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.26καὶ ἦν ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
27They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.27Καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων αὐτοῦ
2828⧼Καὶ ἐπληρώθη γραφὴ λέγουσα Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη⧽
29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,29Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες Οὐὰ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις
30come down from the cross and save yourself!"30σῶσον σεαυτὸν καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ
31In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself!31Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι
32Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.32 Χριστὸς Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμεν καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν
33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33Καὶ γενομένης ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
34And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?").34καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἐλωῒ Ἐλωῒ λεμὰ* σαβαχθάνι* ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Θεός μου Θεός μου εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με
35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah."35Καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ
36Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said.36Δραμὼν δέ τις καὶ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν λέγων Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν
37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.37 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν
38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38Καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω
39And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!"39Ἰδὼν δὲ κεντυρίων παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς οὗτος ἄνθρωπος Υἱὸς Θεοῦ ἦν
40Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.40Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι ἐν αἷς καὶ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη
41In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.41αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
42It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached,42Καὶ ἤδη ὀψίας γενομένης ἐπεὶ ἦν Παρασκευή ἐστιν προσάββατον
43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.43ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.44 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἐθαύμασεν εἰ ἤδη τέθνηκεν καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν κεντυρίωνα ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν εἰ πάλαι ἀπέθανεν
45When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.45καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος ἐδωρήσατο τὸ πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ
46So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.46Καὶ ἀγοράσας σινδόνα καθελὼν αὐτὸν ἐνείλησεν τῇ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν* αὐτὸν ἐν μνημείῳ* ἦν λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας καὶ προσεκύλισεν λίθον ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τοῦ μνημείου
47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.47 δὲ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰωσῆτος ἐθεώρουν ποῦ τέθειται
