Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him,1And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons;2And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples. Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed3And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
One day Jesus told a story in the form of a parable to a large crowd that had gathered from many towns to hear him:4And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:
“A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it.5A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.
Other seed fell among rocks. It began to grow, but the plant soon wilted and died for lack of moisture.6And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.
Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.
Still other seed fell on fertile soil. This seed grew and produced a crop that was a hundred times as much as had been planted!” When he had said this, he called out, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”8And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
His disciples asked him what this parable meant.9And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?
He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they look, they won’t really see. When they hear, they won’t understand.’10And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.
“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is God’s word.11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
The seeds that fell on the footpath represent those who hear the message, only to have the devil come and take it away from their hearts and prevent them from believing and being saved.12Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
The seeds on the rocky soil represent those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they believe for a while, then they fall away when they face temptation.13They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
The seeds that fell among the thorns represent those who hear the message, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life. And so they never grow into maturity.14And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest. Parable of the Lamp15But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
“No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.16No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.17For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.
“So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.” The True Family of Jesus18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn’t get to him because of the crowd.19Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.
Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to see you.”20And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.
Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.” Jesus Calms the Storm21And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out.22Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.23But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm.24And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!” Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Man25And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
So they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.26And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by demons came out to meet him. For a long time he had been homeless and naked, living in the tombs outside the town.27And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in front of him. Then he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please, I beg you, don’t torture me!”28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon’s power.29(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, for he was filled with many demons.30And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the bottomless pit.31And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby, and the demons begged him to let them enter into the pigs. So Jesus gave them permission.32And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned.33Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
When the herdsmen saw it, they fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran.34When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
People rushed out to see what had happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been freed from the demons. He was sitting at Jesus’ feet, fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.35Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
Then those who had seen what happened told the others how the demon-possessed man had been healed.36They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.
And all the people in the region of the Gerasenes begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them. So Jesus returned to the boat and left, crossing back to the other side of the lake.37Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
The man who had been freed from the demons begged to go with him. But Jesus sent him home, saying,38Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,
“No, go back to your family, and tell them everything God has done for you.” So he went all through the town proclaiming the great things Jesus had done for him. Jesus Heals in Response to Faith39Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him.40And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him.41And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
His only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds.42For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure.43And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.44Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.
“Who touched me?” Jesus asked. Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.”45And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
But Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.”46And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.
When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed.47And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.
“Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”48And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
While he was still speaking to her, a messenger arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. He told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”49While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.
But when Jesus heard what had happened, he said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.”50But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn’t let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl’s father and mother.51And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.
The house was filled with people weeping and wailing, but he said, “Stop the weeping! She isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”52And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died.53And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
Then Jesus took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, “My child, get up!”54And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
And at that moment her life returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.55And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
Her parents were overwhelmed, but Jesus insisted that they not tell anyone what had happened.56And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
