Jesus Appears by the Sea of Tiberias

Later,

After His appearances to the disciples in Jerusalem, Jesus appeared again during the period between His resurrection and ascension. The disciples were still awaiting clear direction for the work Jesus would soon entrust to them.

the sons of Zebedee,

James and John had been fishermen with Peter and were among the disciples closest to Jesus during His earthly ministry. James would later become the first apostle executed for his faith, while John remained a central witness to Christ and the early church.

and two other disciples

Their names are not given, yet their inclusion shows that the risen Jesus continued to meet with and direct followers beyond the most prominent apostles.

were together.

The disciples had gathered in Galilee, where Jesus had instructed them to go after His resurrection. Their fellowship preceded another appearance of the risen Lord and prepared them for the work He would soon give them.

Jhn 20:19 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,…
Act 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together…

Simon Peter told them, “I am going fishing.”

After Jesus’ resurrection, Peter returned to the familiar work he had known before following Jesus. The disciples were still awaiting clearer direction for what lay ahead, and the Sea of Galilee provided a familiar place during this uncertain interval. Peter’s decision also reflects his influence among the disciples.

“We will go with you,” they said.

The others joined Peter, showing the close bond that had formed among them through their years with Jesus. Though they had seen the risen Lord, they had not yet begun the public ministry that would follow the coming of the Holy Spirit.

So they went out and got into the boat,

They set out on the Sea of Galilee in the ordinary manner of fishermen, returning temporarily to the work that had once sustained several of them.

Their unsuccessful labor prepared the way for Jesus’ appearance and miraculous provision at daybreak. Apart from His direction, their skill and effort produced nothing.

Early in the morning,

Early in the morning, after a night of unsuccessful fishing, the disciples faced the dawn on the Sea of Galilee. The setting signals a new beginning and prepares for the risen Lord’s provision and renewed commission of His followers.

Luk 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning…

Jesus stood on the shore,

Near the place where He had first called several of these men from their nets, Jesus stood on the shore. Though physically present in His resurrected body, He remained at a distance, directing their actions and revealing His authority over their work.

but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus.

As in other appearances after the resurrection, recognition came in God’s timing. Their failure to identify Him immediately underscores both the reality of His transformed resurrection body and their need to understand His presence through His words and works.

Jhn 20:14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus…
Luk 24:16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.
Mrk 16:12 After this, Jesus appeared in a different form…

So He called out to them,

Jesus addressed the disciples from the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where several had returned to fishing. Though they did not yet recognize Him, He took the initiative, as He had throughout His ministry, directing and caring for them after His resurrection.

Jhn 11:43 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice…
Mrk 6:50 for they all saw Him and were terrified.…
Mat 14:27 But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage!”…

“Children, do you have any fish?”

Jesus spoke with the affectionate authority of a shepherd toward those entrusted to Him. Their unsuccessful night of fishing revealed that their own skill and effort had produced nothing, preparing them to recognize His provision.

Jhn 13:33 Little children, I am with you only a little while longer.…
1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you……
Mrk 1:17 “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make…

“No,” they answered.

The disciples honestly acknowledged their empty nets. Their failure set the scene for Jesus to demonstrate again that their work and future calling depended on His direction.

Mat 14:17 “We have here only five loaves of bread…”…

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter,

Traditionally identified as John, the son of Zebedee and author of this Gospel, he recognized Jesus through the miraculous catch of fish. The event recalled an earlier calling of the disciples and revealed that the risen Jesus was directing them from the shore.

Jesus told them,

Jesus had already prepared bread and fish for the meal, yet He includes the catch He provided through their obedience. The fish confirm the reality of the miracle and remind the disciples that their future work depends on His direction and power.

The catch was fresh evidence of Jesus’ presence and authority. As the disciples prepare to carry His message into the world, they are reminded that fruitful service comes from abiding in and obeying Him.

Mat 17:27 But so that we may not offend them, go to the sea…
Luk 5:9-10 For he and his companions were astonished at the catch…

So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore.

Peter acted decisively, as he often did among the disciples. The risen Jesus had directed them to the catch, and Peter helped bring it safely to land. The setting on the Sea of Galilee recalled their former work as fishermen and showed that the Lord still provided for them in their ordinary labor.

Mat 13:47-48 Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net…
Luk 5:6-7 When they had done so, they caught such a large number…

It was full of large fish, 153,

John records the number as an eyewitness detail, emphasizing the extraordinary size of the catch. Each fish was counted, confirming that the abundance was real rather than an impression. The provision displayed Christ’s authority over creation and anticipated the gathering of many people through the apostles’ witness.

After His resurrection, Jesus met seven disciples beside the Sea of Tiberias, where they had returned to fishing. Jesus and Peter

When they had finished eating,

Jesus asked Simon Peter,

Jesus addressed the disciple who had denied Him three times, bringing Peter’s failure and future service into view.

Mrk 16:7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead…

do you love Me more than these?”

Jesus required Peter to state where his deepest loyalty lay. The question reached beyond fishing, possessions, and even the other disciples, calling Peter to wholehearted devotion. The Greek word for love here is agape, indicating a selfless, sacrificial love.

Mat 26:33-35 Peter said to Him, “Even if all fall away on account of You,…
Mat 10:37 Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me;…

“Yes, Lord,”

Peter answered with humility, recognizing Jesus’ authority.

he answered, “You know I love You.”

Peter no longer made bold claims about himself. He appealed to Jesus’ complete knowledge of his heart.

Jhn 2:24-25 But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…

Jesus replied, “Feed My lambs.”

Ezk 34:15 I will tend My flock and make them lie down,…
1Pe 5:2-4 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you,…

Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?”

Jesus continues Peter’s public restoration after his three denials. Addressing him as Simon son of John underscores the seriousness of the moment and calls Peter to renewed faithfulness. Love for Christ stands at the center of Peter’s future service and leadership.

Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Jhn 15:9-10 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.…
Luk 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you like wheat.…

“Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.”

Peter answers humbly, no longer making bold claims about his own strength. He appeals to Jesus’ complete knowledge of his heart, acknowledging both his devotion and his past failure.

Jhn 16:30 Now we understand that You know all things…
1Co 8:3 But the one who loves God is known by God.

Jesus restores Peter to responsibility among His people. Peter is charged to guide, protect, and care for believers as one entrusted with the flock that belongs to Christ.

1Pe 5:2-4 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you,…
Act 20:28 Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock…

Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?”

Jesus’ three questions correspond to Peter’s three denials, bringing Peter’s failure into the open and restoring him through a renewed confession of loyalty. Addressing him as Simon son of John recalls the man Jesus first called, confronting Peter with humility and the need for steadfast devotion.

Jhn 1:42 Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him…
Mat 26:34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night…”…
Luk 22:34 But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster…

Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?”

Peter understood why Jesus repeated the question. His grief reflected the memory of his denials and the seriousness of being restored to service after failing so publicly.

Luk 22:62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Mat 26:75 Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken:…
Mrk 14:72 And immediately the rooster crowed a second time.…

“Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.”

Peter no longer relied on bold promises about his own strength. He appealed to Jesus’ complete knowledge of his heart, confessing sincere love while acknowledging that the Lord knew both his past weakness and present repentance.

Jhn 16:30 Now we understand that You know all things…
1Ki 8:39 For You alone know the hearts of all men—…

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.

Jesus restored Peter and entrusted him with the care of His people. Peter was to serve believers by teaching, guarding, and strengthening them, not as their owner, but as a shepherd responsible to Christ, whose sheep they are.

Jhn 5:19 So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son……
Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…

Peter would eventually be taken by others to his execution, surrendering his freedom for the sake of Christ. Early church tradition identifies this as Peter’s martyrdom in Rome.

Luk 22:54 Then they seized Jesus, led Him away, and took Him…
Act 21:33-34 The commander came up and arrested Paul,…

Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.

Jesus foretold Peter’s martyrdom, likely by crucifixion, which early church tradition places in Rome during Nero’s persecution. Peter, once fearful enough to deny Jesus, would later remain faithful to Him even in death. His suffering would glorify God by bearing public witness to Christ.

Jhn 12:33 He said this to indicate the kind of death…
Jhn 18:32 This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken…
2Pe 1:14 because I know that this tent will soon…

And after He had said this, He told him, “Follow Me.”

Jesus renewed His personal call to Peter, directing him to continue as His disciple and shepherd of His people. Following Christ would require Peter’s obedience, service, and eventual willingness to die for the Lord he had once denied.

Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them.

As Jesus spoke with Peter after the resurrection, Peter looked back and saw John nearby. The disciple whom Jesus loved is traditionally understood to be John, whose close fellowship with Jesus is woven throughout the Gospel. The scene takes place on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus had appeared to the disciples and restored Peter after his denial.

Jhn 18:15-16 Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus.…
Jhn 20:2-8 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple…
Jhn 19:26-27 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved…

He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper

John is identified by his place beside Jesus during the Last Supper. Reclining at the meal placed him close enough to speak privately with Jesus, reflecting the trust and familiarity he shared with the Lord.

Jhn 13:23-25 One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved,…
Jhn 13:26-27 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this morsel…
Jhn 13:28-30 But no one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to him.…

to ask, “Lord, who is going to betray You?”

During the supper, Jesus announced that one of the disciples would betray Him. John’s question came amid the disciples’ confusion and grief as Judas prepared to hand Jesus over to His enemies.

Mat 26:21-25 And while they were eating, He said to them,…
Mrk 14:18-20 And while they were reclining and eating, Jesus said…
Luk 22:21-23 Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table.…

When Peter saw him,

Peter noticed the disciple whom Jesus loved, traditionally identified as John. The scene takes place by the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus had first called Peter, after Peter’s restoration and Jesus’ prediction of Peter’s future death.

Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…
Mat 14:28-31 “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come…”…
Mat 17:4 Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here…

he asked,

Peter’s attention turned from his own calling to John’s future. Having heard what awaited him, he wondered whether John would face a similar destiny.

Luk 12:41 “Lord,” said Peter, “are You addressing this parable to us?”…
Mat 15:15 Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
Mrk 10:28 Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything…

“Lord, what about him?”

Peter recognized Jesus’ authority but sought information about another disciple’s path. Jesus would direct him to focus on his own obedience rather than comparing his calling with John’s.

Mat 19:27 “Look,” Peter replied, “we have left everything…
Rom 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?…
2Co 10:12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves…

Jesus answered,

After telling Peter how he would glorify God in death, Jesus addressed Peter’s concern about the beloved disciple, traditionally identified as John.

Mat 21:24-27 “I will also ask you one question,” Jesus replied,…
Jhn 2:18-21 On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign…
Luk 10:41-42 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried…”…

“If I want him to remain until I return,

Jesus spoke hypothetically, not promising that John would remain alive until His return. The saying later led to a misunderstanding among the disciples, which John corrected.

1Th 4:15-17 By the word of the Lord, we declare to you…
Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back…
Act 1:11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here”…

what is that to you?

Peter was not to measure his calling against John’s future. Christ assigns His servants their individual paths and responsibilities.

Rom 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?…
Mat 20:14-15 Take your pay and go. I want to give this last man the same…
Gal 6:4-5 Each one should test his own work. Then he will…

You follow Me!”

Peter’s duty was clear: he was to obey Christ faithfully, regardless of what Jesus chose for others.

Mat 4:19 “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make…
Mat 16:24 Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come…
Jhn 12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am…

Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die.

Jesus’ words led some believers to conclude that the beloved disciple would remain alive until Christ’s return. The report shows how easily an incomplete recollection of Jesus’ words could produce error, even among the early disciples. John’s long life may have helped sustain the rumor.

Mat 16:28 Truly I tell you, some who are standing here…
Mrk 9:1 Then Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some…”…
Luk 9:27 But I tell you truly, some who are standing here…

However, Jesus did not say that he would not die,

John directly corrects the misunderstanding. Jesus had not promised that the disciple would be spared death, and the church was not to build its expectations on a statement Jesus had not made. This clarification emphasizes accurate comprehension of Jesus’ words and maintains doctrinal accuracy among believers.

Jhn 11:26 And everyone who lives and believes in Me will…
Jhn 8:51 Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word…
Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death:…

but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”

Jesus spoke hypothetically, affirming His authority over the length and purpose of each disciple’s life. His return remained certain, but Peter was not to concern himself with John’s future. Each follower of Christ was responsible to obey the calling given to him.

Jhn 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back…
Act 1:11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here”…
Rom 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant?…

This is the disciple

John identifies himself as the beloved disciple, an eyewitness of Jesus’ ministry and one of the Twelve. He belonged to Jesus’ closest circle with Peter and James and was present at key events in the Lord’s earthly life.

Jhn 13:23 One of His disciples, the one whom Jesus loved,…
Jhn 19:26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved…
Jhn 20:2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple…

who testifies to these things

His Gospel rests on firsthand witness to Jesus’ works, teaching, crucifixion, resurrection, and appearances to His disciples.

Act 5:32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit……
1Jn 1:1-3 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,…
Jhn 15:27 And you also must testify, because you have been with Me…

and who has written them down.

John recorded these events so that the truth about Jesus Christ would be preserved and proclaimed to later generations.

Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…
1Jn 1:4 We write these things so that our joy may be complete.
Rev 1:19 Therefore write down the things you have seen,…

And we know that his testimony is true.

The closing affirmation confirms that John’s account was recognized by those who knew him and received by the early church as trustworthy testimony concerning Jesus.

Jhn 19:35 The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony……
3Jn 1:12 Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone…
Jhn 5:32 There is another who testifies about Me,…

There are many more things that Jesus did.

John closes by recognizing that his Gospel records only a portion of Jesus’ earthly ministry, including His teaching, miracles, compassion, and dealings with individuals and crowds.

Act 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit…
Mat 4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,…
Mrk 1:34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases…

If all of them were written down,

The Gospel writers selected what was necessary to testify truthfully about Jesus and lead readers to faith in Him.

Jhn 20:30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence…
Luk 1:1-4 Many have undertaken to compose an account…
Act 1:1 In my first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that…

I suppose that not even the world itself would have space

John uses deliberate hyperbole to express the immeasurable scope of Christ’s works and the limits of human record-keeping.

1Ki 8:27 But will God indeed dwell upon the earth?…
2Ch 2:6 But who is able to build a house for Him?…
Isa 66:1 This is what the LORD says: “Heaven is My throne…”…

for the books that would be written.

The written Gospel is sufficient for its purpose, though it is not an exhaustive account of all Jesus did. His life, power, and glory cannot be fully contained in any human record.

Ecc 12:12 And by these, my son, be further warned:…
Dan 7:10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from His presence.…
Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing…
