Moses received the Lord’s commands and delivered them faithfully to the people, serving as God’s appointed mediator and leader. The name LORD identifies Israel’s covenant God, who was fulfilling His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by giving their descendants the land of Canaan. The instructions that follow establish the boundaries of the inheritance Israel was to possess after its wilderness journey. Exo 6:1 But the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do… “Command the Israelites and say to them: God directs Moses to deliver His command to the nation, reaffirming Moses’ role as mediator of the covenant and Israel’s responsibility to obey the Lord’s instructions. Lev 23:2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them,… When you enter the land of Canaan, The conquest and settlement of Canaan lay ahead of Israel after their wilderness years. The land had been promised to Abraham’s descendants and would mark the fulfillment of God’s pledge to establish them in their own homeland. Deu 7:1 When the LORD your God brings you into the land… it will be allotted to you as an inheritance Canaan was God’s gift to Israel, not a territory gained merely by military strength. It was to be divided among the tribes and families as a lasting possession under the Lord’s authority. Psa 105:11 I will give you the land of Canaan as the portion… with these boundaries: The stated borders defined the land Israel was to receive and provided an orderly basis for its tribal allotments. Exo 23:31 And I will establish your borders from the Red Sea…… Your southern border will extend from the Wilderness of Zin The Wilderness of Zin lay in the desert south of Canaan and formed part of Israel’s approach to the land after years of wandering. It was near Kadesh, where Israel faced repeated crises of unbelief and where Moses disobeyed God at the waters of Meribah. Its inclusion in the boundary marked the end of the wilderness region and the beginning of Israel’s allotted inheritance. Jos 15:1 Now the allotment for the clans of the tribe of Judah… along the border of Edom. Edom occupied the territory southeast of Canaan and was descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother. Though related by ancestry, Israel and Edom remained separate peoples with distinct lands assigned under God’s purpose. The boundary prevented confusion over the territory given to Israel and that belonging to Edom. Deu 2:4-5 You will pass through the territory of your brothers… On the east, your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea, The Salt Sea, now called the Dead Sea, provided a clear natural landmark for the eastern end of the southern boundary. Its southern tip marked where the border began before turning westward across the wilderness. The detailed description established the actual limits of the land Israel was to possess. Jos 15:2-4 Their southern border started at the bay on the southern tip… cross south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, The Ascent of Akrabbim, meaning “Ascent of Scorpions,” was a steep, rugged pass along the southern edge of the land. Jos 15:3 proceeded south of the Ascent of Akrabbim… continue to Zin, The boundary extended through the Wilderness of Zin, the arid region near Kadesh-barnea where Israel spent significant time during the wilderness years. The area stood near the approach to Canaan and recalled Israel’s earlier rebellion and delay in entering the land. Num 13:21 So they went up and spied out the land… and go south of Kadesh-barnea. Kadesh-barnea lay near the southern border and served as an important staging point in Israel’s journey. Passing south of it distinguished the boundary of the territory Israel was to possess from the wilderness through which the nation had traveled. Deu 1:19 And just as the LORD our God had commanded us,… Then it will go on to Hazar-addar From Kadesh the line continued to Hazar-addar, one of several named landmarks that established a definite and measurable border. The detailed boundaries showed that the land was not a vague promise but a specific inheritance assigned by God. Num 20:22-23 After they had set out from Kadesh, the whole congregation… and proceed to Azmon, Azmon marked the next point along the southern frontier. The orderly progression of these locations defined the extent of the land entrusted to Israel and confirmed the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise. Jos 15:4 It proceeded to Azmon, joined the Brook of Egypt… where it will turn from Azmon, Azmon marked a change in the southern boundary’s course, likely near the southwestern limits of Canaan. Though its exact location is no longer certain, it lay in the region approaching the border with Egypt. The detailed boundary description shows that Israel’s inheritance was defined by God and assigned with care. Jos 15:4 It proceeded to Azmon, joined the Brook of Egypt… join the Brook of Egypt, The boundary then followed the Brook of Egypt, generally identified with Wadi El-Arish, a seasonal watercourse west of the Negev. It formed the natural southern frontier between Canaan and Egypt, separating the land of promise from the land where Israel had been enslaved. This point defined the northern reach of the land assigned to Israel. Jos 13:5 the land of the Gebalites; and all Lebanon to the east,… then extend to Zedad, From there the line turned toward Zedad, probably in the area of modern southern Syria. These landmarks established a definite inheritance for Israel according to the land the Lord gave them. Ezk 47:15 This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side… continue to Ziphron, Ziphron marked part of Israel’s northern boundary, though its exact location is no longer certain. Ezk 47:15 This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side… and end at Hazar-enan. Hazar-enan formed the eastern end of the northern border. Its name means “village of springs,” suggesting a settlement associated with water sources, a valuable feature in the dry regions near Israel’s northeastern frontier. The boundary secured the land assigned to the tribes and distinguished Israel’s territory from the surrounding nations. Ezk 47:17 So the border will run from the Sea to Hazar-enan… This will be your boundary on the north. The northern line completed one side of the land God appointed for Israel. The boundary continued south along the eastern highlands overlooking the Sea of Chinnereth, later called the Sea of Galilee. Deu 1:3 In the fortieth year, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites… “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance. The land west of the Jordan was to be distributed among the tribes by lot, under the Lord’s direction. Each tribal territory would become a lasting family inheritance, fulfilling God’s promise to give Canaan to Abraham’s descendants. Num 26:55-56 Indeed, the land must be divided by lot;… The LORD has commanded that it be given Israel’s possession of the land rested on God’s authority and faithfulness, not on human preference or military success.
