John 13
Berean Study Bible

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

It was now just before the Passover Feast,

Passover was the annual observance of Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt through the blood of the sacrificial lamb. As Jerusalem prepared for the feast, Jesus neared the fulfillment of all that Passover foreshadowed: His death as the true Lamb who would give Himself for His people.

and Jesus knew that His hour had come

Jesus knew that the hour appointed by the Father had come for His betrayal, crucifixion, resurrection, and exaltation. As His public ministry drew to a close, He focused on preparing His disciples for what lay ahead.

Having loved His own who were in the world,

Jesus continued to care for the disciples entrusted to Him, though they remained in a hostile world and would soon face fear, failure, and persecution.

The evening meal was underway,

Jesus shared this final meal with His disciples in Jerusalem during Passover week, shortly before His arrest. The setting provided a private time of fellowship, instruction, and preparation for the events leading to His crucifixion.

Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands,

Jesus faced the cross with full awareness that the Father had entrusted Him with supreme authority, including the work of salvation and final judgment. His humility in serving the disciples did not lessen His kingship; it revealed the character of the One who possesses all authority.

Jesus’ earthly ministry began with His eternal relationship to the Father. He was sent from heaven to accomplish the Father’s will, making God known and providing redemption for His people.

So He got up from the supper,

Jesus rose from the Passover meal at a deliberate moment, turning the disciples’ attention from the table to an acted lesson. The Master was about to perform a task normally assigned to the lowest household servant.

Dressed for service, Jesus prepared to wash the dust-covered feet of His disciples. His action displayed the humility, love, and cleansing that would mark His saving work and the character He required of those who followed Him.

After that, He poured water into a basin

During the Last Supper, Jesus deliberately assumed the work normally assigned to the lowest household servant. The basin and water prepared for the customary washing required after walking dusty roads in sandals, yet His purpose reached beyond ordinary hospitality.

Jesus served each disciple personally, including Judas, who was already preparing to betray Him. His action displayed the humility and self-giving love that marked His ministry and pointed to the cleansing from sin He would accomplish through His death.

He came to Simon Peter,

Jesus reached Peter during the foot washing, an act normally performed by a household servant because travelers’ feet were dirtied by unpaved roads. Peter’s prominent role among the disciples and his strong devotion to Jesus make his response especially revealing.

Peter could not reconcile Jesus’ authority as Master and Lord with the lowly service He was performing. His question expressed both reverence and confusion.

Mat 15:15 Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”

“Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”

Peter recognized Jesus’ authority but did not yet understand that the washing pointed beyond physical cleanliness to the cleansing and humble service Jesus would provide through His sacrificial death.

During the Last Supper, Jesus answered Peter’s objection to having his feet washed. Though the task was normally performed by a household servant, Jesus deliberately took this humble role before giving his disciples a final lesson about service and love.

Jhn 16:12 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet…

After His death and resurrection, and through the Holy Spirit’s teaching, the disciples would understand that Jesus’ humility, suffering, and sacrifice were central to God’s plan of redemption.

Jhn 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes…

“Never shall You wash my feet!”

Foot washing was a lowly servant’s task, offered to guests as an act of hospitality. Peter’s refusal sprang from reverence for Jesus as his Lord and Teacher; he could not accept that the Messiah would take the place of a servant. He had not yet grasped that Jesus came to serve and would humble Himself even to death.

As often among the disciples, Peter spoke quickly and forcefully. His devotion to Jesus was genuine, but his understanding remained incomplete.

Mrk 14:29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I never will.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”

The washing of Peter’s feet pointed beyond the immediate act to the cleansing Jesus alone provides. Apart from receiving Christ’s cleansing work, no one can share in fellowship with Him or belong to Him.

That is why He said,

When Jesus had washed their feet

Jesus had taken the place of a household servant, performing a task normally assigned to the lowest rank. The disciples’ feet were soiled from travel, yet the act pointed beyond ordinary hospitality to the cleansing He provides through His sacrificial death.

Jesus returned to the Passover meal, sharing fellowship with the disciples shortly before His arrest. The setting joined His act of humble service to His final instruction before the cross.

Mat 26:20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining with the twelve…
Mrk 14:18 And while they were reclining and eating, Jesus said…

and asked, “Do you know what I have done for you?

Mrk 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,…

You call Me Teacher and Lord,

The disciples rightly addressed Jesus as the One who taught them God’s truth and exercised authority over their lives. As Teacher, He instructed them in the Scriptures and revealed the will of the Father. As Lord, He stood above them as their Master, worthy of obedience.

Mat 23:8-10 But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher,…
Luk 6:46 Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?

Their words expressed more than customary respect. They recognized the position Jesus held among them, even though they had not yet fully grasped the scope of His identity and coming glory.

Jesus confirmed that their confession was true. He was indeed their Teacher and Lord, and His authority gave full meaning to the humility He had just displayed in washing their feet.

Exo 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are”…

In a land of unpaved roads and sandals, washing guests’ feet was a necessary but lowly task, ordinarily assigned to the least servant. Jesus’ act displays the humility that would lead Him to give Himself for His people.

you also should wash one another’s feet.

His followers are to serve one another with the same humility, setting aside status and self-interest. Foot washing may be practiced literally, but the command reaches beyond the act itself to a life marked by humble service, forgiveness, and care for fellow believers.

I have set you an example

Jesus had just washed the disciples’ feet, taking the place ordinarily assigned to the lowest household servant. Though He was their Lord and Teacher, He willingly performed a task associated with humility and service. His action revealed the character of true leadership in God’s kingdom.

1Co 11:1 You are to imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.
1Jn 2:6 Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.

so that you should do

The disciples were not merely to admire what Jesus had done but to follow His pattern. Their life together was to be marked by humble service rather than competition for position or honor. Such obedience would distinguish them as His followers.

Mat 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine…
Luk 6:46 Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I say?

Jesus’ service to them pointed beyond the washing of feet to His coming death for their sins. He gave Himself for those He loved, and He called them to serve one another with the same humility, love, and self-sacrifice.

Truly, truly, I tell you,

Jesus solemnly confirms the certainty of what He is about to teach His disciples after washing their feet. His words carry the authority of the Master who has given them a visible example of humble service.

Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…
Jhn 5:19 So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son……
Jhn 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.

no servant is greater than his master,

Though He is their Lord, Jesus willingly performed the work of a household servant. His disciples were not to consider themselves above such service or exempt from the humility He displayed.

Jhn 15:20 Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant…
Mat 10:24-25 A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant…
Luk 6:40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but…

nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

Those sent out in Christ’s name represent Him and remain accountable to Him. Their authority is derived from the One who sends them, and their conduct must reflect His will.

Mat 10:40 He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me…
Luk 10:16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you…
Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…

If you know these things,

Jesus had just given His disciples a visible example of humble service by washing their feet. As their Lord and Teacher, He took the role of a servant and commanded them to follow His example. They were to understand that greatness in His kingdom is shown through willing, selfless service to others.

2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things…
Luk 12:47 That servant who knows his master’s will…
Rom 2:18 if you know His will and approve of what is superior…

you will be blessed

God’s favor rests on those who receive Christ’s instruction with obedient faith. The blessing is not based on knowing His will alone, but on living in accordance with it.

Luk 11:28 But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word…
Psa 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel…
Psa 112:1 Hallelujah! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,…

if you do them.

True discipleship produces action. The disciples were called to serve one another in humility, reflecting the character and mission of the One who came not to be served, but to serve.

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

I am not speaking about all of you;

During the Last Supper, Jesus distinguishes the faithful disciples from Judas, who is present among them but has already set his heart on betrayal.

Jhn 6:70 Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve?”…
Jhn 17:12 While I was with them, I protected and preserved them…

I know whom I have chosen.

Jesus’ choice of the Twelve was deliberate and made with full knowledge of Judas’s coming actions; Judas’s betrayal did not surprise Him or overturn God’s purpose.

Jhn 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you. And I appointed you…
Jhn 10:14 I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep…

But this is to fulfill the Scripture:

The betrayal would unfold according to God’s revealed plan, confirming that the events leading to the cross were not outside His control.

Mat 26:56 But this has all happened so that the writings…
Act 1:16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled…

‘The one who shares My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’

Judas would betray the One with whom he had lived, served, and eaten. His treachery violated the closeness and trust of shared fellowship, yet it would lead into the events God had ordained.

Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…
Luk 22:21 Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table.
Mat 26:23 Jesus answered, “The one who has dipped his hand……

I am telling you now before it happens,

Jesus prepares the disciples for Judas’s betrayal before it unfolds. His knowledge of what is coming shows that the betrayal will not catch Him unaware or overturn His mission.

Isa 48:5 Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I announced it…
Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now…
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

so that when it comes to pass,

When the events occur, the disciples will recognize that Jesus remained in control even as He was handed over to His enemies.

Jhn 14:29 And now I have told you before it happens,…
Jhn 16:4 But I have told you these things, so that when their hour…
Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD…

you will believe that I am He.

The fulfillment of His words will confirm His identity as the Messiah, the Son of God, and the One who shares the divine name.

Jhn 8:24 That is why I told you that you would die in your sins.…
Jhn 8:28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…
Isa 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD…

Truly, truly, I tell you,

Jesus speaks with divine authority, calling His disciples to heed the certainty and weight of what follows.

Jhn 3:11 Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 8:51 Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word…

whoever receives the one I send

Those commissioned by Christ carry His message and serve under His authority. Their work continues the mission He entrusted to them.

Luk 10:16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you…
Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”…
Jhn 17:18 As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them…

receives Me,

Welcoming Christ’s faithful messengers and believing their testimony is inseparable from receiving Christ Himself.

Mrk 9:37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name”…
Mat 18:5 And whoever welcomes a little child like this…
Luk 9:48 And He said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child…

and whoever receives Me

Faith in Jesus brings a person into relationship with Him, acknowledging Him as the One sent from God.

Jhn 14:9 Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time…”…
Jhn 12:44-45 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me…
1Jn 2:23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father…

receives the One who sent Me.”

Receiving the Son also means receiving the Father who sent Him. Jesus’ mission, authority, and message come from the Father, and His representatives bear witness to that divine mission.

Mat 10:40 He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me…
Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,…
Jhn 5:23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.…

After Jesus had said this,

Following His teaching and example of humble service during the Last Supper, Jesus turned to the betrayal that would set the events of His arrest in motion.

Jhn 18:1 After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out…
Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes…
Mat 26:1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,…

He became troubled in spirit

Though fully aware of what lay ahead, Jesus felt the sorrow and anguish of being betrayed by one of His own disciples.

Jhn 12:27 Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say?…
Mrk 14:33 He took with Him Peter, James, and John,…

and testified,

He spoke with solemn certainty, revealing what was about to occur.

Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Jhn 8:14 Jesus replied, “Even if I testify about Myself”…
Jhn 3:11 Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know…

“Truly, truly, I tell you,

His words carried divine authority and demanded the disciples’ attention.

Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…
Jhn 1:51 Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, ……

one of you will betray Me.”

Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve and a trusted companion, would hand Jesus over to His enemies, fulfilling God’s redemptive purpose while bearing responsibility for his own betrayal.

They did not understand how betrayal could arise from among those who had traveled with Jesus, witnessed His works, and shared His ministry. Judas had concealed his intentions so effectively that no one immediately identified him as the traitor.

The disciples looked to Jesus for clarity because He alone knew the identity and intentions of the betrayer. During the Passover meal, this question revealed their distress and uncertainty as Jesus prepared them for the events soon to follow.

“It is the one to whom I give this morsel after I have dipped it.”

Sharing a dipped morsel was a customary act within the fellowship of the meal and could express honor toward the recipient. Jesus extended this gesture to Judas even as He revealed the betrayal that Judas had already determined to carry out.

Mat 26:23 Jesus answered, “The one who has dipped his hand……

Then He dipped the morsel

The disciples were gathered around a shared meal during the Passover season, a setting marked by covenant remembrance and fellowship. The act made the contrast sharper between Jesus’ faithful love and Judas’s concealed treachery.

Satan entered into him.

Jhn 7:36 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me…
Jhn 10:6 Jesus spoke to them using this illustration……

Since Judas kept the money bag,

Judas Iscariot served as treasurer for the disciples, carrying the funds used for their shared needs and for helping the poor. His position gave him access to the group’s resources and concealed the greed that would later be exposed in his betrayal.

The disciples assumed Judas had been sent to make final preparations for the Passover meal. Because he managed the money, such an errand would have seemed ordinary, and they did not yet understand what Judas was about to do.

or to give something to the poor.

Almsgiving was customary during Passover, and Jesus’ ministry regularly included care for those in need. The disciples therefore considered it possible that Judas had been sent to distribute aid rather than to carry out his secret plan.

Mrk 10:21 Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him,…
Luk 12:33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.…
Mat 6:2-4 So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet…

As soon as he had received the morsel,

Judas accepted Jesus’ final act of friendship at the meal, yet his resolve to betray Him was fixed. The shared bread, normally a sign of fellowship and honor, stood in painful contrast to Judas’s secret purpose.

Mat 26:23 Jesus answered, “The one who has dipped his hand……

The darkness reflected more than the hour, symbolizing spiritual darkness and evil. Judas turned from the presence of Christ and entered the path of betrayal, rejecting the light Jesus offers, while the suffering soon to follow would lead to Jesus’ victory through the resurrection.

Jhn 14:2-3 In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so,…
Jhn 17:24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me…

A new commandment I give you:

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus gave His disciples a defining command for life under the new covenant. It did not abolish God’s moral law but revealed the standard and character of obedience expected from those who belong to Him.

Jhn 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another…
1Jn 2:7-8 Beloved, I am not writing to you a new commandment,…
2Jn 1:5 And now I urge you, dear lady—not as a new commandment…

Love one another.

Jesus called His followers to a self-giving love that would shape their fellowship despite differences of background, status, and personality. Their unity was to rest not on shared circumstances but on their common faith in Him.

1Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God.…
1Jn 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning:…
1Th 4:9 Now about brotherly love, you do not need…

As I have loved you,

Jesus Himself was the pattern for this love. He had served, taught, forgiven, and cared for His disciples, and He was about to demonstrate its fullest expression by laying down His life for them.

Jhn 15:9 As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.…
Eph 5:2 and walk in love, just as Christ loved us…
1Jn 3:16 By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down…

so you also must love one another.

Love among believers is a direct command, not merely an ideal. By treating one another with the humility, patience, and sacrificial care shown by Christ, His disciples bear visible witness that they belong to Him.

1Jn 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought…
1Jn 3:23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe…
1Th 3:12 And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow…

By this everyone will know that you are My disciples,

Jesus identified mutual love as the visible mark of those who truly belong to Him. On the night before His crucifixion, He prepared the disciples for life and witness after His departure. Their unity and sacrificial care for one another would distinguish them in a divided world and bear testimony to the love Christ had shown them.

Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,…
1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles…

if you love one another.”

Love for fellow believers is not optional evidence but the expected fruit of discipleship. It involves faithful service, forgiveness, humility, and seeking another’s good, following Christ’s own example. Such love would set the early church apart and demonstrate that its members had been joined to Christ through the new covenant.

Jhn 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another…
1Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God.…
1Jn 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning:…

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

“Lord, where are You going?” Simon Peter asked.

Peter spoke from genuine concern as Jesus continued to prepare the disciples for His departure during the Last Supper. Unable to grasp the full meaning of the coming crucifixion, he wanted to remain with Jesus and understand what lay ahead.

Jhn 14:5 “Lord,” said Thomas, “we do not know where You are going…”…
Jhn 16:5 Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me;…

Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”

Jesus would go first to the cross, then rise from the dead and ascend to the Father—work no disciple could accomplish. Peter would later serve Christ faithfully and ultimately die as a martyr, following his Lord in suffering and entering His presence.

Jhn 7:33-34 So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer,…
Jhn 21:18-19 Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young…

“Lord,” said Peter,

Peter spoke with respect for Jesus’ authority, yet his response also revealed the earnestness and impulsiveness that marked his discipleship. He could not accept that Jesus would soon depart through death and return to the Father.

Jhn 6:68 Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go?…
Mat 14:28 “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come…”…
Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…

“why can’t I follow You now?

Jesus had told the disciples that they could not go where He was going. Peter understood this as separation but did not grasp that the cross must come before resurrection and that he was not yet prepared for the trials ahead.

Jhn 8:21 He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me…
Jhn 7:34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me;…
Jhn 12:26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am…

I will lay down my life for You.”

Peter sincerely believed he possessed the courage to die for Jesus. Within hours, fear would lead him to deny knowing Him, showing that devotion alone could not sustain him apart from the strength Jesus would provide.

Mat 26:35 Peter replied, “Even if I have to die with You…
Mrk 14:31 But Peter kept insisting, “Even if I have to die with You,…
Luk 22:33 “Lord,” said Peter, “I am ready to go with You…”…

“Will you lay down your life for Me?”

Jesus confronts Peter’s confident pledge with the cost of true devotion. Peter was willing to speak boldly, yet he did not understand how soon fear would test his resolve.

Mat 26:35 Peter replied, “Even if I have to die with You…
Mrk 14:31 But Peter kept insisting, “Even if I have to die with You,…
Luk 22:33 “Lord,” said Peter, “I am ready to go with You…”…

Jesus replied.

Jesus knew Peter’s coming failure, but He did not reject him. Peter’s denial would expose his weakness and prepare him for later restoration and service.

Mat 26:34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus declared, “this very night…”…
Mrk 14:30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “this very night”…
Luk 22:34 But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster…

“Truly, truly, I tell you,

Jesus solemnly announces what will certainly take place. His words carry divine authority and leave no room for Peter to rely on his own confidence.

Jhn 1:51 Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, ……
Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…

before the rooster crows,

Before the night ended and morning began, Peter’s promise would be tested in the courtyard of the high priest.

Mrk 13:35 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know…
Mat 26:74-75 At that he began to curse and swear to them,…

you will deny Me three times.

Peter would repeatedly deny knowing Jesus, despite his earlier declaration of loyalty. The prediction reveals the weakness of human resolve and the complete accuracy of Jesus’ knowledge.

Mrk 14:66-72 While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the servant…
Luk 22:56-62 A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight…
Jhn 18:17 At this, the servant girl watching the door said…
