Mark 4
Berean Study Bible

The Parable of the Sower

Once again Jesus began to teach beside the sea,

Jesus often taught near the Sea of Galilee, where fishermen, merchants, villagers, and travelers could gather. The open shoreline provided space for large crowds and suited His public ministry throughout Galilee.

Mat 13:1 That same day Jesus went out of the house…
Luk 5:1-2 On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake…

and such a large crowd gathered around Him

The growing crowds reflected the widespread effect of His teaching and miracles. People came from surrounding regions because His words carried authority and His works demonstrated God’s power.

Mrk 3:7-9 So Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea,…
Mat 15:30-31 Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind…

that He got into a boat and sat in it,

From the boat, Jesus could speak to the people without being pressed by the crowd. Sitting was the customary posture of a teacher, and the water helped carry His voice across the shore.

Mat 13:2 Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat…
Luk 5:3 Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon…

while all the people crowded along the shore.

The people remained gathered at the water’s edge to hear Him. The scene shows both their eagerness to receive His teaching and Jesus’ deliberate care to make His message accessible to them.

Mrk 6:53-55 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret…
Mat 14:34-36 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.…

And He taught them many things in parables,

Jesus used familiar scenes from daily life to communicate the realities of God’s kingdom. These accounts invited sincere hearers to consider God’s truth while exposing the spiritual blindness of those who rejected Him.

Mat 13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…
Luk 8:10 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom…
Psa 78:2 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden…

and in His teaching He said,

Jesus taught with divine authority, calling His hearers beyond outward religion to faith, obedience, and readiness for God’s kingdom.

Mat 13:3 And He told them many things in parables,…
Mat 5:2 and He began to teach them, saying:
Jhn 6:59 Jesus said this while teaching in the synagogue.…

“Listen!

Jesus calls the crowd to give close attention to the parable and its meaning.

Mat 13:9 He who has ears, let him hear.”
Pro 1:8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,…
Jas 1:19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…

A farmer

He draws on the familiar work of a first-century Galilean sower, preparing the hearers for a picture of the kingdom of God.

2Ti 2:6 The hardworking farmer should be the first…
Jas 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…

went out

The farmer deliberately leaves home to scatter seed across his field.

Mat 13:3 And He told them many things in parables,…
Luk 8:5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing,…
Psa 126:6 He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed,…

to sow his seed.

The seed represents God’s word, which is proclaimed broadly; its fruitfulness depends on how it is received.

Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked.…
Ecc 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and do not rest your hands…

And as he was sowing,

Jesus drew on the familiar work of a farmer scattering seed across an open field. The sower represents the one who proclaims God’s Word, which is offered broadly to those who hear it.

Mat 13:3 And He told them many things in parables,…
Ecc 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and do not rest your hands…
2Co 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap…

some seed fell along the path,

Field paths were hardened by continual travel, leaving the soil unable to receive seed. They picture hearts made unresponsive to God’s Word, whether through indifference, unbelief, or worldly distractions.

Mat 13:4 And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path,…
Luk 8:5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing,…
Isa 6:10 Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears…

and the birds came and devoured it.

Before the seed could penetrate the ground, birds quickly removed it. Jesus later identifies the birds with Satan, who seeks to take away the Word from those who hear without receiving it.

Mat 13:19 When anyone hears the message of the kingdom…
Luk 8:12 The seeds along the path are those who hear…
Rev 19:17-18 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out…

Some fell on rocky ground,

Rocky places in Galilee often consisted of a thin covering of soil over limestone. Seed could fall there and begin to grow, but the underlying rock prevented roots from reaching moisture and depth.

Mat 13:5 Some fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil.…
Luk 8:6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up…
Job 8:17 His roots wrap around the rock heap; he looks for a home…

where it did not have much soil.

The soil pictures those who hear God’s word without a heart prepared for lasting obedience. There is enough reception for an initial response, but not enough depth for faith to endure testing.

Isa 37:27 Therefore their inhabitants, devoid of power…
Psa 129:6 May they be like grass on the rooftops,…
Psa 37:2 For they wither quickly like grass and wilt…

It sprang up quickly

The seed’s rapid growth reflects an eager and joyful beginning. Outward response may appear promising, especially when the message brings hope or relief.

Jon 4:6 So the LORD God appointed a vine, and it grew up…
Psa 90:6 In the morning it springs up new, but by evening…
Ezk 17:6 It sprouted and became a spreading vine, low in height…

because the soil was shallow.

Without deep roots, the plant cannot withstand heat or drought. So also, a shallow response to the word cannot endure persecution, hardship, or pressure to abandon faith.

Mat 13:21 But since he has no root, he remains for only a season.…
Luk 8:13 The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word…
Eph 3:17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts…

But when the sun rose,

But when the sun rose, the heat exposed the weakness of plants growing in shallow soil.

Psa 121:6 The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

the seedlings were scorched,

Because they lacked sufficient depth to draw moisture, the seedlings could not endure the conditions that healthy plants regularly face.

Mat 13:6 But when the sun rose, the seedlings were scorched,…
Jas 1:11 For the sun rises with scorching heat…
Isa 24:6 Therefore a curse has consumed the earth…

and they withered

The phrase “and they withered” indicates that their early growth had no lasting strength.

Luk 8:6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up…
1Pe 1:24 All flesh is like grass, and all its glory…
Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…

because they had no root.

Jesus illustrates those who receive the word gladly but fall away when affliction or persecution comes, having never developed a settled faith in Him.

Mat 13:21 But since he has no root, he remains for only a season.…
Luk 8:13 The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word…
Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith…

Other seed fell among thorns,

The seed represents God’s word, while the thorns depict the worldly pressures and desires that compete for a person’s heart. Fields in Galilee often required continual clearing because thorns and weeds quickly returned.

Mat 13:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up…
Luk 8:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it…
Jer 4:3 Break up your unplowed ground, and do not sow among the thorns.…

which grew up and choked the seedlings,

The thorns did not prevent the seed from sprouting, but they grew alongside it and deprived the young plants of space, light, and moisture. In Jesus’ explanation, such growth pictures cares, wealth, and pleasures that crowd out a response to God’s word.

Mat 13:22 The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word,…
Luk 8:14 The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear,…
Heb 6:8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless,…

and they yielded no crop.

Though the plants appeared alive for a time, they matured without producing grain. The result portrays those who receive the word but allow competing loyalties to prevent lasting spiritual fruit.

Jer 12:13 They have sown wheat but harvested thorns…
Isa 5:1-7 I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:…
Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,…

Still other seed fell on good soil,

The good soil represents those who receive God’s word with faith and allow it to shape their lives. Unlike the hardened path, shallow rocky ground, or thorn-choked soil, such hearts are prepared to receive the message and endure in it.

Mat 13:8 Still other seed fell on good soil and produced a crop…
Luk 8:8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up…
Jer 17:8 He is like a tree planted by the waters…

where it sprouted, grew up, and produced a crop—

The seed’s progress from germination to harvest portrays genuine spiritual life developing over time. God’s word does not remain merely heard; it takes root, matures, and produces visible results in obedience and character.

1Co 3:6-7 I planted the seed and Apollos watered it,…
Col 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…

one bearing thirtyfold, another sixtyfold, and another a hundredfold.”

The differing harvests show that believers may bear fruit in different measures, yet every fruitful response stands in contrast to the seed that produces nothing. Even the smallest yield described was an abundant return by ordinary agricultural standards, emphasizing the power of God’s word in a receptive life.

Mat 13:23 But the seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word…
Gen 26:12 Now Isaac sowed seed in the land, and that very year…

Then Jesus said,

Jesus concluded the Parable of the Sower with a solemn call to the crowd gathered beside the Sea of Galilee. His words carried the authority of the One revealing the mysteries of God’s kingdom.

Mat 13:9 He who has ears, let him hear.”
Luk 8:8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up…

“He who has ears to hear,

Many heard Jesus’ teaching, but only those receptive to God would grasp its meaning. The parable exposed differing responses to the word of God, from hardened rejection to fruitful faith.

Mat 11:15 He who has ears, let him hear.
Luk 14:35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile.…

let him hear.”

True hearing requires receiving Jesus’ message and responding in obedience. The command separates casual listeners from those who recognize and follow the truth He proclaimed.

Rev 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says…
Rev 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says…

The Purpose of Jesus’ Parables

As soon as Jesus was alone with the Twelve and those around Him,

Jesus withdrew from the crowds with the apostles and other committed followers who remained near Him. Public parables concealed truth from the hardened while drawing genuine seekers into further instruction. The Twelve held a unique role as His chosen witnesses, yet others also followed Him closely and desired to learn.

Mat 13:36 Then Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.…
Mrk 9:28 After Jesus had gone into the house, His disciples asked…
Mat 17:19 Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked,…

they asked Him about the parable.

Their question revealed that they did not presume to understand its full meaning. Jesus would explain what the crowd had heard, showing that spiritual understanding comes through His instruction and is given to those who seek Him.

Mrk 7:17 After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house,…
Luk 8:9 Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.
Mat 15:15 Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”

He replied,

Jesus spoke privately to His disciples after teaching the crowds by the sea. Their question about the parables prompted Him to explain why He taught in this way.

Mat 13:10-11 Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked,…
Luk 8:9-10 Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.…

“The mystery of the kingdom of God

God’s kingdom had long been promised through the prophets, but its arrival in the person and work of Christ was now being revealed. God’s saving rule would advance through Jesus’ ministry, death, resurrection, and the gathering of His people.

Rom 16:25-26 Now to Him who is able to strengthen you by my gospel…
Col 1:26-27 the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations…

has been given to you,

The disciples received understanding as God’s gift. Their closeness to Jesus brought both greater revelation and greater responsibility to receive and obey what He taught.

Mat 11:25-27 At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father…
Luk 10:21-24 At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit…

but to those on the outside

Those who rejected Jesus remained outside the circle of faith, including many who heard His words but would not believe Him.

1Co 5:12-13 What business of mine is it to judge those outside…
Col 4:5-6 Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time.…

everything is expressed in parables,

Jesus’ parables revealed the truth of God’s kingdom to receptive hearers while exposing the spiritual blindness of those who hardened themselves against Him.

Mat 13:34-35 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…
Psa 78:2-4 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden…

so that,

Jesus’ use of parables both revealed the kingdom of God to His disciples and exposed the unbelief of those who rejected Him. Their inability to understand was not caused by a lack of evidence but reflected hearts already resistant to God’s revelation.

Isa 6:9-10 And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing,…
Jhn 12:40 He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts…
Act 28:26-27 Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing…”…

‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,

Many witnessed Jesus’ works and heard His teaching, yet refused to recognize the authority and identity displayed before them. Their outward observation did not lead to faith.

Ezk 12:2 “Son of man, you are living in a rebellious house…
Jer 5:21 Hear this, O foolish and senseless people……
Psa 115:5-6 They have mouths, but cannot speak; they have eyes…

and ever hearing but never understanding;

Israel had received God’s law and the testimony of the prophets, but many listeners did not receive Jesus as the promised Messiah. Their spiritual hardness kept them from grasping the meaning of His message.

Deu 29:4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you…
Jhn 8:43 Why do you not understand what I am saying?…
Heb 5:11-14 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain…

otherwise they might turn and be forgiven.’”

Genuine understanding leads to repentance, a turning from sin to God, and forgiveness. Those who persistently reject the light they have received remain in their blindness, while those who respond in faith receive mercy.

The Parable of the Sower Explained

Then Jesus said to them,

Jesus addressed His disciples privately after speaking to the crowd, giving them instruction that unfolded the meaning of the parable.

Mat 13:10-11 Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked,…
Luk 8:9-10 Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.…
Mat 13:34-35 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…

“Do you not understand this parable?

The Parable of the Sower explains how people respond to the word of God. The disciples’ difficulty showed that they still needed Jesus to teach them the spiritual realities behind His stories.

Mat 13:18-19 Consider, then, the parable of the sower:…
Luk 8:11-12 Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is…
Mrk 8:17-18 Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them,…

Then how will you understand any of the parables?

This parable provided a foundation for understanding Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of God, the opposition to God’s word, and the different responses it receives.

The farmer

“The farmer” in Mark 4:14 first represents Christ, who proclaims the kingdom of God. It also includes all who faithfully carry His message to others. In first-century Galilee, farmers commonly scattered seed broadly across both prepared and unprepared ground.

Mat 13:3 And He told them many things in parables,…
Luk 8:5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing,…
Jas 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…

sows

The phrase “sows” refers to the open proclamation of God’s message. The seed is cast widely, reaching people whose responses differ according to the condition of their hearts. The sower’s task is to spread the seed; the outcome reveals how it is received.

Mat 13:4 And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path,…
2Co 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap…
Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked.…

the word.

“The word” in Mark 4:14 is the message of God’s kingdom announced by Jesus: the gospel calling people to repentance, faith, and salvation. Its fruitfulness depends not on any weakness in the message but on whether hearers receive it, hold fast to it, and allow it to take root.

Luk 8:11 Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is…
Jas 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth…
1Pe 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,…

Some are like the seeds along the path,

The path was hardened by constant travel through cultivated fields, leaving the soil unable to receive seed. It pictures people whose hearts remain closed to God’s message.

Mat 13:4 And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path,…
Luk 8:5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing,…

where the word is sown.

The word is the proclamation of God’s kingdom and the salvation offered through Christ. It is scattered broadly, reaching people with differing responses.

Luk 8:11 Now this is the meaning of the parable: The seed is…
Jas 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth…
1Pe 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,…

As soon as they hear it,

Hearing the message does not itself produce faith. Some receive it only outwardly, without reflection, understanding, or trust.

Satan comes and takes away the word

Satan actively opposes God’s work by obscuring the truth and preventing it from taking root in unreceptive hearts.

Mat 13:19 When anyone hears the message of the kingdom…
Luk 8:12 The seeds along the path are those who hear…
1Pe 5:8 Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil…

God’s word is personally directed to those who hear it, but a hardened heart allows it to be removed before it bears fruit.

Some are like the seeds sown on rocky ground.

Rocky soil in Israel often consisted of a thin layer of earth over limestone. Seeds sprouted quickly in the warmed, shallow soil but could not develop deep roots or survive the heat. The image describes hearts that respond without allowing God’s Word to take firm hold.

Mat 13:5-6 Some fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil.…
Luk 8:6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up…

They hear the word

They receive the message of the kingdom and understand enough to respond. Yet hearing alone does not establish lasting faith when the Word remains only at the surface of life.

Rom 10:17 Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing…
1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…

and at once receive it with joy.

Their response is immediate and enthusiastic, but it rests on emotion rather than settled commitment. When hardship, opposition, or the cost of following Christ comes, their shallow faith is exposed.

Luk 8:13 The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word…
1Th 1:6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord…

But they themselves have no root,

Their reception of God’s word is immediate but shallow. Like seed resting on thin soil over rock, it shows early growth without the depth needed for lasting life and strength.

Luk 8:13 The seeds on rocky ground are those who hear the word…
Col 2:7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith…
Eph 3:17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts…

and they remain for only a season.

Their profession endures only while faith is easy or beneficial. When circumstances change, their lack of inward commitment becomes evident.

Hos 6:4 What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? For your loyalty…
Jas 1:11 For the sun rises with scorching heat…

When trouble or persecution comes because of the word,

Jesus warned that allegiance to Him would bring opposition. In the first-century world, believers could face rejection from family, synagogue authorities, local communities, and Roman officials because of their confession of Christ.

Jhn 15:20 Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant…
2Ti 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives…
Act 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples…

they quickly fall away.

Rather than enduring hardship, they abandon the faith they had briefly embraced. Their response reveals that the word had not taken lasting hold in their hearts.

Gal 1:6 I am amazed how quickly you are deserting the One…
Heb 3:12 See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart…
Heb 10:38-39 But My righteous one will live by faith;…

Others are like the seeds sown among the thorns.

Jesus identifies those whose initial response to God’s word is weakened by competing influences. Farmers in Galilee regularly faced thorny ground, where uncontrolled growth robbed young plants of light, water, and nutrients. The image portrays a heart in which worldly concerns are allowed to remain and eventually suppress spiritual fruit.

Mat 13:22 The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word,…
Luk 8:14 The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear,…
Pro 24:31 Thorns had grown up everywhere, thistles had covered…

They hear the word,

They receive the message of Christ—the Gospel—but hearing alone does not produce lasting faithfulness. The following description explains how anxiety, wealth, and other desires can crowd out the truth that has been received.

Jas 1:21-22 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth…
Heb 4:2 For we also received the good news just as they did;…
Ezk 33:31-32 So My people come to you as usual, sit before you,…

but the worries of this life,

Daily concerns over food, shelter, family, security, and social pressures can consume the heart. Under Roman rule, many in Judea lived with economic uncertainty, heavy taxation, and political instability. Such concerns become dangerous when they displace trust and obedience to God.

Luk 21:34 But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down…
Mat 6:25-34 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,…

the deceitfulness of wealth,

Riches promise security, influence, and satisfaction, yet they cannot preserve life or reconcile a person to God. Wealth may be received as a blessing, but it easily fosters self-reliance and divided loyalty.

1Ti 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,…

and the desire for other things

Longing for status, pleasure, possessions, power, or approval draws the heart toward idols. These competing desires crowd out wholehearted devotion to God.

Like thorns overtaking cultivated ground, worldly anxieties and desires gradually suppress the work of God’s word in a person who has received it.

Mat 13:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up…
Heb 4:2 For we also received the good news just as they did;…

Tit 3:14 And our people must also learn to devote themselves…

Still others are like the seeds sown on good soil.

The good soil represents those whose hearts are prepared to respond rightly to God’s message. Unlike the hardened path, shallow ground, or thorn-filled soil, it receives the seed and allows it to take root.

The Lesson of the Lamp

Jesus also said to them,

Jesus continued instructing His disciples through familiar images that revealed truths about the kingdom of God.

Mat 13:10-11 Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked,…
Luk 8:10-11 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom…
Jhn 16:12-13 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet…

“Does anyone bring in a lamp

A lamp provided needed light in the dark interior of a first-century home. It pictures the truth Jesus had come to reveal.

Luk 15:8-9 Or what woman who has ten silver coins…
Mat 25:1-4 At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins…
Luk 12:35 Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning.

to put it under a basket or under a bed?

Covering a lamp would defeat its purpose and could extinguish its flame. God’s revealed truth was not intended to remain concealed.

Luk 8:16 No one lights a lamp and covers it with a jar…
Mat 10:26 So do not be afraid of them. For there is…
Luk 12:2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…

Doesn’t he set it on a stand?

A lamp was placed where its light could fill the house. In the same way, the message of Christ was to be made known openly through the lives and witness of those who received it.

Mat 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket.…
Luk 11:33 No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar…
Num 8:2-3 Speak to Aaron and tell him: ‘When you set up the lamps…

For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed,

Jesus teaches that what is presently concealed will not remain so. His words include the truths of the kingdom that He revealed to His disciples, though many heard His parables without understanding. They also anticipate God’s final judgment, when secret deeds, motives, and unbelief will be openly exposed.

Luk 8:17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed…
Mat 10:26 So do not be afraid of them. For there is…
Luk 12:2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…

and nothing concealed that will not be brought to light.

God’s purposes and judgment will be made known in His appointed time. Darkness cannot permanently hide sin or suppress the truth of Christ. The light of God will reveal what people have done and confirm the justice of His judgment.

1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…
Eph 5:13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…

If anyone has ears to hear,

Jesus calls the crowd to give careful attention to His teaching. Though many heard His words, only those willing to receive God’s truth would grasp the meaning of the parables.

Mrk 7:16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Mat 11:15 He who has ears, let him hear.
Luk 8:8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprang up…

let him hear.”

The imperative command requires more than physical hearing, urging active engagement and a willing heart. Jesus’ parables revealed the realities of God’s kingdom to receptive hearts while exposing the unbelief of those who refused His message.

The Seed Growing Secretly

Jesus also said,

Jesus continued His teaching on the kingdom through parables, using familiar scenes from daily life to reveal truths that required careful consideration.

Luk 8:4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming…
Mat 13:3 And He told them many things in parables,…
Mat 13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…

“The kingdom of God

God’s reign was being made known through Jesus’ ministry and would advance according to God’s purpose, despite opposition and humble beginnings.

Dan 2:44 In the days of those kings, the God of heaven…
Luk 17:20-21 When asked by the Pharisees, Jesus replied,…
Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter…

is like a man

The farmer represents one who carries out his ordinary responsibility without possessing control over the life within the seed.

Mat 13:24 Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom…
Luk 8:5 A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing,…
1Co 3:6 I planted the seed and Apollos watered it,…

who scatters seed on the ground.

The seed pictures the message of God’s kingdom being spread among people. Once sown, its growth depends ultimately on God, whose work often unfolds beyond human sight or ability to direct.

Isa 55:10-11 For just as rain and snow fall from heaven…
2Co 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap…
Ecc 11:6 Sow your seed in the morning, and do not rest your hands…

Night and day he sleeps and wakes,

The farmer continues his ordinary routine while the work in the field proceeds beyond his control. His labor in sowing is real, but he cannot produce life in the seed or hasten its development.

Psa 3:5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains…
Psa 127:2 In vain you rise early and stay up late,…
Gen 8:22 As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest…

and the seed sprouts and grows,

Beneath the soil, the seed germinates and steadily moves toward harvest. Jesus uses this natural process to show that the kingdom of God advances by God’s power, often quietly and without visible human control.

Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its growth, …
Isa 55:10-11 For just as rain and snow fall from heaven…
1Co 3:6-7 I planted the seed and Apollos watered it,…

though he knows not how.

The farmer sees the results but does not command or fully understand the process. God brings spiritual life and growth according to His own wisdom and timing, while His servants faithfully sow and await the harvest.

Ecc 11:5 As you do not know the path of the wind,…
Jhn 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound…
1Co 15:37-38 And what you sow is not the body that will be,…

All by itself the earth produces a crop—

Jesus illustrates the hidden yet certain growth of God’s kingdom. As God ordered the earth to produce vegetation at creation, He brings spiritual life and growth according to His purpose. The farmer participates by sowing and later harvesting, but he cannot make the seed grow.

Gen 1:11-12 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation:…
Psa 104:14 He makes the grass grow for the livestock and provides crops…
Psa 67:6 The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.

first the stalk,

Growth begins visibly but remains incomplete. Like a young plant emerging from the soil, those who receive God’s word begin a process of development that requires time and depends on God’s sustaining work.

Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its growth, …
Hos 14:5-6 I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom…
Job 14:7-9 For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down…

then the head,

The plant advances toward fruitfulness as the grain forms. In the same way, genuine faith matures through continuing obedience, understanding, and perseverance.

Exo 9:31-32 Now the flax and barley were destroyed…
Gen 41:5-7 but he fell back asleep and dreamed a second time:…

then grain that ripens within.

The completed grain is ready for harvest. Jesus points beyond present spiritual growth to the final gathering of His people, when God’s work reaches its appointed completion.

Heb 6:7-8 For land that drinks in the rain often falling on it…
Jas 5:7-8 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…

And as soon as the grain is ripe,

Grain ripens through an ordered process of growth, reflecting the appointed completion of what has been sown. The parable emphasizes that the kingdom advances according to God’s timing, though much of its progress remains unseen.

Exo 9:31-32 Now the flax and barley were destroyed…
Jas 5:7-8 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…
Gal 6:9 Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time……

Harvesting begins when the crop is ready. The farmer’s action marks the decisive conclusion of the growing season, portraying God’s certain intervention when His purpose has reached its appointed end.

Rev 14:15-16 Then another angel came out of the temple,…
Deu 16:9 You are to count off seven weeks from the time…

The harvest brings the work of sowing and growth to completion. It points to the final gathering and judgment associated with the fulfillment of God’s kingdom, when those who belong to Him are received and evil is dealt with.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

Then He asked,

Jesus continued instructing the crowds by drawing them into the subject before giving the comparison. His questions invited careful thought rather than passive listening.

Psa 78:2 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden…
Mat 13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…

“To what can we compare the kingdom of God?

God’s kingdom is His rule breaking into human history through the ministry of Christ. Many expected a visible political kingdom, but Jesus revealed that it would begin in ways that appeared small and unexpected.

Luk 13:18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like?…
Mat 13:31 He put before them another parable: “The kingdom…

With what parable shall we present it?

Jesus used familiar images from daily life to make God’s truth understandable while exposing the response of each listener’s heart. The parable that follows explains how the kingdom would grow from an apparently insignificant beginning into something far-reaching.

Mat 13:33 The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman…
Mat 13:35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet…

It is like a mustard seed,

Jesus compared the Kingdom of God to a seed familiar to His listeners: small, ordinary, and easily overlooked. Its beginning in His ministry and among a small group of disciples appeared humble, yet it carried the life and power of God.

Mat 13:31-32 He put before them another parable: “The kingdom…
Mat 17:20 “Because you have so little faith,” He answered.…
Luk 17:6 And the Lord answered, “If you have faith…

which is the smallest of all seeds

The mustard seed was among the smallest seeds commonly planted by farmers in the region. The contrast underscores how God’s Kingdom begins without earthly display but grows according to His purpose.

Luk 13:18-19 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like?…
Zec 4:10 For who has despised the day of small things?…
1Co 1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world……

sown upon the earth.

As seed is scattered into the ground, the message of the Kingdom went out into the world through Christ and His disciples. What began in Galilee would extend among the nations as God established His rule in the hearts and lives of those who believed.

Mat 13:3-8 And He told them many things in parables,…
Luk 8:5-8 A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing,…
Jhn 12:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat…

But after it is planted,

“But after it is planted” marks the beginning of the seed’s appointed work in the soil, illustrating the genuine beginning of God’s Kingdom in Christ’s ministry. Though it first appears small and ordinary, it contains the life and purpose ordained by God.

1Co 3:6-7 I planted the seed and Apollos watered it,…
Psa 1:3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,…
Isa 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its growth, …

it grows to be the largest of all garden plants

The mustard plant was familiar for its striking growth from a tiny seed into a large shrub. Jesus used this visible reality to portray the Kingdom’s expansion from its humble beginnings among a small group of disciples to its far-reaching influence.

Mat 13:32 Although it is the smallest of all seeds,…
Luk 13:19 It is like a mustard seed that a man tossed into his garden.…
Ezk 31:3-4 Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful…

and puts forth great branches,

Its broad branches picture a kingdom marked by strength, permanence, and increasing reach. Through the proclamation of the Gospel, the church would grow beyond its original setting and extend throughout the world.

Ezk 31:5 Therefore it towered higher than all the trees of the field.…
Psa 80:10-11 The mountains were covered by its shade,…
Gen 49:22 Joseph is a fruitful vine—a fruitful vine by a spring,…

so that the birds of the air nest in its shade.”

The sheltering branches portray people from many nations finding a place within God’s Kingdom. Jesus’ Kingdom would not remain confined to Israel but would offer refuge and blessing to all who come to Him in faith.

Ezk 17:23 I will plant it on the mountain heights of Israel…
Ezk 31:6 All the birds of the air nested in its branches……
Dan 4:12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit was abundant…

With many such parables

Jesus taught the crowds through familiar scenes from daily life, using earthly realities to reveal the Kingdom of God. His parables both disclosed truth to receptive hearers and exposed the hardness of those who refused to believe.

Mat 13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…
Mat 13:35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet…
Psa 78:2 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden…

Jesus spoke the word to them,

He proclaimed God’s message with divine authority, calling people to hear, repent, and receive the reign of God through Him.

Mrk 2:2 they gathered in such large numbers that there was no more…
Jhn 17:14 I have given them Your word and the world has hated them.…
Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…

to the extent that they could understand.

Jesus instructed the people according to their readiness to receive what He taught, patiently leading His disciples and the crowds toward fuller understanding.

Jhn 16:12 I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet…
1Co 3:2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready…
Heb 5:11-14 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain…

He did not tell them anything without using a parable.

Jesus regularly taught the crowds through familiar scenes from daily life, using them to reveal the realities of God’s kingdom. Those who received His words in faith were led to deeper understanding, while hardened hearers remained blind to their meaning. His use of parables fulfilled the pattern foretold of the Messiah speaking hidden truths through such teaching.

Mat 13:34-35 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…
Luk 8:10 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom…
Psa 78:2 I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden…

But privately He explained everything to His own disciples.

Away from the crowds, Jesus instructed the Twelve in the meaning of His parables and prepared them for their future ministry. Their understanding came through His direct teaching, enabling them to bear witness to His work and later instruct the church.

Mat 13:36 Then Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.…
Mat 13:11 He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries……
Luk 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets,…

Jesus Calms the Storm

When that evening came,

Jesus had spent the day teaching the crowds by the sea. As daylight faded, He turned from public ministry to travel with the disciples.

Mat 8:16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed…
Jhn 6:16 When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

He said to His disciples,

He directed the men who had been with Him throughout the day and were learning to serve under His authority.

Mat 8:18 When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him,…
Luk 8:22 One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross…”…

“Let us cross to the other side.”

Jesus led them across the Sea of Galilee toward its eastern shore, an area largely inhabited by Gentiles. The journey would bring them into circumstances that revealed both His authority over creation and His mission beyond Israel.

Mat 14:22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat…
Jhn 6:17 got into a boat, and started across the sea…

After they had dismissed the crowd,

Jesus’ public teaching by the sea had concluded, and the disciples prepared to cross to the other side. The transition from the gathered multitude to the boat placed the disciples in a more direct setting with Him.

Mrk 6:45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat…
Mat 15:39 After Jesus had dismissed the crowds, He got into the boat…
Mat 14:22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat…

they took Jesus with them,

The disciples left shore with Jesus as He directed their journey. Though they served Him in arranging the crossing, He remained the One leading them.

Jhn 6:21 Then they were willing to take Him into the boat,…
Luk 8:22 One day Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross…”…
Mat 8:23 When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him.

since He was already in the boat.

Having taught from the boat, Jesus did not return to land before the crossing began. The same vessel that had served as His platform for teaching would soon become the setting for the revelation of His authority over the storm.

Luk 5:3 Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon…
Mat 13:2 Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat…
Mrk 3:9 Jesus asked His disciples to have a boat ready for Him…

And there were other boats with Him.

Other vessels accompanied Jesus and His disciples across the lake. Those nearby would also have witnessed the storm and the miraculous calm that followed.

Jhn 6:23 However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place…
Luk 5:7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat…
Luk 5:2 He saw two boats at the edge of the lake.…

Soon a violent windstorm came up,

The Sea of Galilee lies in a deep basin bordered by hills, where cooler air descending through the surrounding valleys can collide with warm air over the water and produce sudden, dangerous storms. The disciples, several of whom were experienced fishermen, recognized the seriousness of the situation.

Mat 8:24 Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea…
Luk 8:23 As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down…
Jon 1:4 Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea,…

and the waves were breaking over the boat,

The wind drove the water into the small fishing boat with enough force to sweep over its sides. What began as a crossing at Jesus’ direction had become a life-threatening crisis, exposing the disciples’ inability to control the circumstances around them.

Mat 14:24 but the boat was already far from land, buffeted by waves…
Jhn 6:18 A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.
Psa 107:25 For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted…

so that it was being swamped.

Water was rapidly filling the boat, placing everyone aboard in immediate danger. The storm reveals the disciples’ fear and helplessness while preparing for Jesus to display His authority over the wind and sea.

Luk 8:24 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master…
Mat 8:25 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us!”…
Jon 1:5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god.…

But Jesus was in the stern,

Jesus lay in the rear of the boat, a place often associated with the helmsman. Though He appeared inactive, He remained fully aware and sovereign over the danger surrounding them. The Sea of Galilee was known for sudden, violent storms caused by its location below sea level and the surrounding hills.

Mat 8:24 Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea…
Luk 8:23 As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down…
Jon 1:5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god.…

sleeping on the cushion.

After sustained ministry, Jesus was physically weary and slept amid the storm. His rest displayed genuine human exhaustion, yet also complete peace and confidence in the Father’s care.

Psa 121:4 Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber…
Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone…
Pro 3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;…

So they woke Him and said,

The disciples, overwhelmed by fear as the boat took on water, turned to Jesus in desperation. They knew He was their Teacher, but they had not yet grasped the extent of His authority.

Mat 8:25 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us!”…
Luk 8:24 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master…
Psa 44:23 Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise!……

“Teacher, don’t You care that we are perishing?”

Their question revealed panic and doubt rather than trust. They interpreted His sleep as indifference, though He was present with them and would soon show that even the wind and sea obey Him.

1Pe 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Psa 107:23-30 Others went out to sea in ships, conducting trade…
Psa 94:14 For the LORD will not forsake His people;…

Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea.

Awakened by His frightened disciples, Jesus rose and addressed the storm with the authority of its Creator. On the Sea of Galilee, where sudden storms were common, the wind and waves had threatened the boat, yet they were subject to His command. His rebuke showed that the forces of creation, including the chaos represented by the sea, were under His sovereign rule.

Mat 8:26-27 “You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid…
Luk 8:24-25 The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master…

“Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!”

Jesus did not appeal for help or struggle against the storm; He commanded it directly. The wind and sea obeyed His voice, revealing an authority belonging to God alone. His command also exposed the contrast between the disciples’ fear and His complete control.

Psa 46:10 Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted…
Hab 2:20 But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth…

And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm.

The storm ceased immediately, leaving no gradual settling of the waves. The sudden calm confirmed the miracle and gave the disciples further evidence of Jesus’ identity. What had appeared uncontrollable was brought into perfect order by His word.

Psa 107:29-30 He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea…
Jon 1:15 Then they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea,…

“Why are you so afraid?”

The storm was severe enough to terrify seasoned fishermen on the Sea of Galilee, where sudden winds could quickly turn the water dangerous. Yet Jesus was with them in the boat. Their fear revealed that they had not understood the security of His presence or the authority He possessed.

Mat 8:26 “You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid…
Psa 56:3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…

He asked.

Jesus used the danger before them to expose the deeper issue within them. Having seen His works and heard His teaching, the disciples were being called to consider who He was and whether they would trust Him when circumstances appeared beyond their control.

Luk 8:25 “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed,…
Mrk 8:17-18 Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them,…
Mat 16:8 Aware of their conversation, Jesus said…

“Do you still have no faith?”

Their faith had not yet grown to match what they had witnessed. Jesus was not denying the reality of the storm, but confronting their failure to trust His care and power. The question points to the faith required of His followers: confidence in Him even when danger is real and the outcome is unseen.

Mat 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold…
Mat 17:20 “Because you have so little faith,” He answered.…
Jas 1:6 But he must ask in faith, without doubting…

Overwhelmed with fear,

The disciples recognized that they had witnessed power belonging to God alone. Their fear arose from awe before Jesus’ authority and from the realization that they did not yet fully understand who He was.

Luk 8:37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes…
Mat 17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown in terror.
Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.…

they asked one another,

In the aftermath of the storm, the disciples discussed what they had seen. Though they had followed Jesus and heard His teaching, His command over the sea forced them to reconsider the extent of His authority.

Mrk 1:27 All the people were amazed and began to ask one another…
Mrk 2:7 Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming!…
Luk 5:21 But the scribes and Pharisees began thinking…

“Who is this,

Their question marks a turning point in their understanding. Jesus was not merely a respected teacher or prophet; His works revealed a unique identity and authority.

Mat 21:10 When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred…
Luk 7:49 But those at the table began to say to themselves,…
Luk 9:9 “I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this man…

that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

By speaking and bringing the storm to an immediate end, Jesus demonstrated sovereign rule over creation. The wind and sea obeyed Him because He is the Lord over all He made.

Mat 8:27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?”…
Luk 8:25 “Where is your faith?” He asked. Frightened and amazed,…
Psa 107:29 He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea…
