1Soon afterward He was traveling from one town and village to another, preaching and telling the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with Him,

1Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ καθεξῆς καὶ αὐτὸς διώδευεν κατὰ πόλιν καὶ κώμην κηρύσσων καὶ εὐαγγελιζόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ οἱ δώδεκα σὺν αὐτῷ

2and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, called Magdalene (seven demons had come out of her);

2καὶ γυναῖκές τινες αἳ ἦσαν τεθεραπευμέναι ἀπὸ πνευμάτων πονηρῶν καὶ ἀσθενειῶν Μαρία ἡ καλουμένη Μαγδαληνή ἀφ’ ἧς δαιμόνια ἑπτὰ ἐξεληλύθει

3Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions.

3καὶ Ἰωάννα γυνὴ Χουζᾶ ἐπιτρόπου Ἡρῴδου καὶ Σουσάννα καὶ ἕτεραι πολλαί αἵτινες διηκόνουν αὐτοῖς ἐκ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐταῖς

4As a large crowd was gathering, and people were flocking to Him from every town, He said in a parable:

4Συνιόντος δὲ ὄχλου πολλοῦ καὶ τῶν κατὰ πόλιν ἐπιπορευομένων πρὸς αὐτὸν εἶπεν διὰ παραβολῆς

5"A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up.

5Ἐξῆλθεν ὁ σπείρων τοῦ σπεῖραι τὸν σπόρον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ σπείρειν αὐτὸν ὃ μὲν ἔπεσεν παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν καὶ κατεπατήθη καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατέφαγεν αὐτό

6Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprang up, it withered, since it lacked moisture.

6Καὶ ἕτερον κατέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν καὶ φυὲν ἐξηράνθη διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν ἰκμάδα

7Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.

7Καὶ ἕτερον ἔπεσεν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀκανθῶν καὶ συμφυεῖσαι αἱ ἄκανθαι ἀπέπνιξαν αὐτό

8Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown." As He said this, He called out, "Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!"

8Καὶ ἕτερον ἔπεσεν εἰς τὴν γῆν τὴν ἀγαθήν καὶ φυὲν ἐποίησεν καρπὸν ἑκατονταπλασίονα Ταῦτα λέγων ἐφώνει Ὁ ἔχων ὦτα ἀκούειν ἀκουέτω

9Then His disciples asked Him, "What does this parable mean?"

9Ἐπηρώτων δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ Τίς αὕτη εἴη ἡ παραβολή

10So He said, "The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

10Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ὑμῖν δέδοται γνῶναι τὰ μυστήρια τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῖς δὲ λοιποῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς ἵνα Βλέποντες μὴ βλέπωσιν Καὶ ἀκούοντες μὴ συνιῶσιν

11"This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

11Ἔστιν δὲ αὕτη ἡ παραβολή ὁ σπόρος ἐστὶν ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ

12The seed along the path are those who have heard and then the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

12οἱ δὲ παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες εἶτα ἔρχεται ὁ διάβολος καὶ αἴρει τὸν λόγον ἀπὸ τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν ἵνα μὴ πιστεύσαντες σωθῶσιν

13And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, welcome the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and depart in a time of testing.

13Οἱ δὲ ἐπὶ τῆς πέτρας οἳ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν μετὰ χαρᾶς δέχονται τὸν λόγον καὶ οὗτοι ῥίζαν οὐκ ἔχουσιν οἳ πρὸς καιρὸν πιστεύουσιν καὶ ἐν καιρῷ πειρασμοῦ ἀφίστανται

14As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit.

14Τὸ δὲ εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας πεσόν οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀκούσαντες καὶ ὑπὸ μεριμνῶν καὶ πλούτου καὶ ἡδονῶν τοῦ βίου πορευόμενοι συμπνίγονται καὶ οὐ τελεσφοροῦσιν

15But the seed in the good ground--these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit.

15Τὸ δὲ ἐν τῇ καλῇ γῇ οὗτοί εἰσιν οἵτινες ἐν καρδίᾳ καλῇ καὶ ἀγαθῇ ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον κατέχουσιν καὶ καρποφοροῦσιν ἐν ὑπομονῇ

16"No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see its light.

16Οὐδεὶς δὲ λύχνον ἅψας καλύπτει αὐτὸν σκεύει ἢ ὑποκάτω κλίνης τίθησιν ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ λυχνίας τίθησιν ἵνα οἱ εἰσπορευόμενοι βλέπωσιν τὸ φῶς

17For nothing is concealed that won't be revealed, and nothing hidden that won't be made known and come to light.

17οὐ γάρ ἐστιν κρυπτὸν ὃ οὐ φανερὸν γενήσεται οὐδὲ ἀπόκρυφον ὃ οὐ μὴ γνωσθῇ καὶ εἰς φανερὸν ἔλθῃ

18Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him."

18Βλέπετε οὖν πῶς ἀκούετε ὃς ἂν γὰρ ἔχῃ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ καὶ ὃς ἂν μὴ ἔχῃ καὶ ὃ δοκεῖ ἔχειν ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ

19Then His mother and brothers came to Him, but they could not meet with Him because of the crowd.

19Παρεγένετο δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ μήτηρ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο συντυχεῖν αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον

20He was told, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You."

20ἀπηγγέλη δὲ αὐτῷ Ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ἑστήκασιν ἔξω ἰδεῖν θέλοντές σε

21But He replied to them, "My mother and My brothers are those who hear and do the word of God."

21Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Μήτηρ μου καὶ ἀδελφοί μου οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούοντες καὶ ποιοῦντες

22One day He and His disciples got into a boat, and He told them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So they set out,

22Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐνέβη εἰς πλοῖον καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πέραν τῆς λίμνης καὶ ἀνήχθησαν

23and as they were sailing He fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger.

23πλεόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀφύπνωσεν καὶ κατέβη λαῖλαψ ἀνέμου εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ συνεπληροῦντο καὶ ἐκινδύνευον

24They came and woke Him up, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to die!" Then He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm.

24Προσελθόντες δὲ διήγειραν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Ἐπιστάτα ἐπιστάτα ἀπολλύμεθα Ὁ δὲ διεγερθεὶς ἐπετίμησεν τῷ ἀνέμῳ καὶ τῷ κλύδωνι τοῦ ὕδατος καὶ ἐπαύσαντο καὶ ἐγένετο γαλήνη

25He said to them, "Where is your faith?" They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, "Who can this be? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey Him!"

25Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ποῦ ἡ πίστις ὑμῶν Φοβηθέντες δὲ ἐθαύμασαν λέγοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους Τίς ἄρα οὗτός ἐστιν ὅτι καὶ τοῖς ἀνέμοις ἐπιτάσσει καὶ τῷ ὕδατι καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ

26Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

26Καὶ κατέπλευσαν εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γερασηνῶν ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντιπέρα τῆς Γαλιλαίας

27When He got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met Him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs.

27ἐξελθόντι δὲ αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ὑπήντησεν ἀνήρ τις ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ἔχων δαιμόνια καὶ χρόνῳ ἱκανῷ οὐκ ἐνεδύσατο ἱμάτιον καὶ ἐν οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἔμενεν ἀλλ’ ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν

28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and said in a loud voice, "What do You have to do with me, Jesus, You Son of the Most High God? I beg You, don't torment me!"

28Ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀνακράξας προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ εἶπεν Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί Ἰησοῦ Υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ Ὑψίστου δέομαί σου μή με βασανίσῃς

29For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.

29παρήγγελλεν γὰρ τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ ἐξελθεῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πολλοῖς γὰρ χρόνοις συνηρπάκει αὐτόν καὶ ἐδεσμεύετο ἁλύσεσιν καὶ πέδαις φυλασσόμενος καὶ διαρρήσσων τὰ δεσμὰ ἠλαύνετο ὑπὸ* τοῦ δαιμονίου εἰς τὰς ἐρήμους

30"What is your name?" Jesus asked him." Legion," he said--because many demons had entered him.

30Ἐπηρώτησεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Τί σοι ὄνομά ἐστιν ὁ Δὲ εἶπεν Λεγιών ὅτι εἰσῆλθεν δαιμόνια πολλὰ εἰς αὐτόν

31And they begged Him not to banish them to the abyss.

31καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μὴ ἐπιτάξῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπελθεῖν

32A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged Him to permit them to enter the pigs, and He gave them permission.

32Ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἀγέλη χοίρων ἱκανῶν βοσκομένη ἐν τῷ ὄρει καὶ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς

33The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

33Ἐξελθόντα δὲ τὰ δαιμόνια ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίμνην καὶ ἀπεπνίγη

34When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside.

34Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ βόσκοντες τὸ γεγονὸς ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς

35Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

35ἐξῆλθον δὲ ἰδεῖν τὸ γεγονὸς καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εὗρον καθήμενον τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀφ’ οὗ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐξῆλθεν ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα παρὰ τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν

36Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered.

36ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιμονισθείς

37Then all the people of the Gerasene region asked Him to leave them, because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, He returned.

37Καὶ ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν Γερασηνῶν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς εἰς πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν

38The man from whom the demons had departed kept begging Him to be with Him. But He sent him away and said,

38Ἐδεῖτο δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἀφ’ οὗ ἐξεληλύθει τὰ δαιμόνια εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ ἀπέλυσεν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγων

39"Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you." And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town all that Jesus had done for him.

39Ὑπόστρεφε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου καὶ διηγοῦ ὅσα σοι ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεός καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καθ’ ὅλην τὴν πόλιν κηρύσσων ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς

40When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all expecting Him.

40Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑποστρέφειν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπεδέξατο αὐτὸν ὁ ὄχλος ἦσαν γὰρ πάντες προσδοκῶντες αὐτόν

41Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus' feet and pleaded with Him to come to his house,

41καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦλθεν ἀνὴρ ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰάϊρος καὶ οὗτος ἄρχων τῆς συναγωγῆς ὑπῆρχεν καὶ πεσὼν παρὰ τοὺς πόδας ‹τοῦ› Ἰησοῦ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ

42because he had an only daughter about 12 years old, and she was at death's door. While He was going, the crowds were nearly crushing Him.

42ὅτι θυγάτηρ μονογενὴς ἦν αὐτῷ ὡς ἐτῶν δώδεκα καὶ αὐτὴ ἀπέθνῃσκεν Ἐν δὲ τῷ ὑπάγειν αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι συνέπνιγον αὐτόν

43A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years, who had spent all she had on doctors yet could not be healed by any,

43καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος ἀπὸ ἐτῶν δώδεκα ἥτις ‹ἰατροῖς προσαναλώσασα ὅλον τὸν βίον› οὐκ ἴσχυσεν ἀπ’ οὐδενὸς θεραπευθῆναι

44approached from behind and touched the tassel of His robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped.

44προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν ἥψατο τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔστη ἡ ῥύσις τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς

45"Who touched Me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds are hemming You in and pressing against You."

45Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς Τίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου Ἀρνουμένων δὲ πάντων εἶπεν ὁ Πέτρος Ἐπιστάτα οἱ ὄχλοι συνέχουσίν σε καὶ ἀποθλίβουσιν ⧼καὶ λέγεις Tίς ὁ ἁψάμενός μου⧽

46"Someone did touch Me," said Jesus. "I know that power has gone out from Me."

46Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἥψατό μού τις ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔγνων δύναμιν ἐξεληλυθυῖαν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ

47When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched Him and how she was instantly cured.

47Ἰδοῦσα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ ὅτι οὐκ ἔλαθεν τρέμουσα ἦλθεν καὶ προσπεσοῦσα αὐτῷ δι’ ἣν αἰτίαν ἥψατο αὐτοῦ ἀπήγγειλεν ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ ὡς ἰάθη παραχρῆμα

48"Daughter," He said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace."

48Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Θυγάτηρ ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην

49While He was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader's house, saying, "Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the Teacher anymore."

49Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχεταί τις παρὰ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγων ὅτι Τέθνηκεν ἡ θυγάτηρ σου μηκέτι σκύλλε τὸν Διδάσκαλον

50When Jesus heard it, He answered him, "Don't be afraid. Only believe, and she will be made well."

50Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀκούσας ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Μὴ φοβοῦ μόνον πίστευσον καὶ σωθήσεται

51After He came to the house, He let no one enter with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother.

51Ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν οὐκ ἀφῆκεν εἰσελθεῖν τινα σὺν αὐτῷ εἰ μὴ Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ τὸν πατέρα τῆς παιδὸς καὶ τὴν μητέρα

52Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But He said, "Stop crying, for she is not dead but asleep."

52ἔκλαιον δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐκόπτοντο αὐτήν ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Μὴ κλαίετε ‹οὐ γὰρ› ἀπέθανεν ἀλλὰ καθεύδει

53They started laughing at Him, because they knew she was dead.

53Καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπέθανεν

54So He took her by the hand and called out, "Child, get up!"

54Αὐτὸς δὲ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῆς ἐφώνησεν λέγων Ἡ Παῖς ἔγειρε

55Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then He gave orders that she be given something to eat.

55καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῆς καὶ ἀνέστη παραχρῆμα καὶ διέταξεν αὐτῇ δοθῆναι φαγεῖν

56Her parents were astounded, but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

56καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτῆς ὁ δὲ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν τὸ γεγονός
