The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is also called Passover, was approaching.1Ἤγγιζεν δὲ ἑορτὴ τῶν ἀζύμων λεγομένη Πάσχα
The leading priests and teachers of religious law were plotting how to kill Jesus, but they were afraid of the people’s reaction.2καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τὸ πῶς ἀνέλωσιν αὐτόν ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ τὸν λαόν
Then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve disciples,3Εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Σατανᾶς εἰς Ἰούδαν τὸν καλούμενον Ἰσκαριώτην ὄντα ἐκ τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ τῶν δώδεκα
and he went to the leading priests and captains of the Temple guard to discuss the best way to betray Jesus to them.4καὶ ἀπελθὼν συνελάλησεν τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ στρατηγοῖς τὸ πῶς αὐτοῖς παραδῷ αὐτόν
They were delighted, and they promised to give him money.5καὶ ἐχάρησαν καὶ συνέθεντο αὐτῷ ἀργύριον δοῦναι
So he agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus so they could arrest him when the crowds weren’t around. The Last Supper6καὶ ἐξωμολόγησεν καὶ ἐζήτει εὐκαιρίαν τοῦ παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν ἄτερ ὄχλου αὐτοῖς
Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed.7Ἦλθεν δὲ ἡμέρα τῶν ἀζύμων [ἐν] ἔδει θύεσθαι τὸ πάσχα
Jesus sent Peter and John ahead and said, “Go and prepare the Passover meal, so we can eat it together.”8καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰωάννην εἰπών Πορευθέντες ἑτοιμάσατε ἡμῖν τὸ πάσχα ἵνα φάγωμεν
“Where do you want us to prepare it?” they asked him.9Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Ποῦ θέλεις ἑτοιμάσωμεν
He replied, “As soon as you enter Jerusalem, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters,10 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ εἰσελθόντων ὑμῶν εἰς τὴν πόλιν συναντήσει ὑμῖν ἄνθρωπος κεράμιον ὕδατος βαστάζων ἀκολουθήσατε αὐτῷ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἰς ἣν εἰσπορεύεται
say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’11καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας Λέγει σοι Διδάσκαλος Ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμα ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω
He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”12κἀκεῖνος ὑμῖν δείξει ἀνάγαιον μέγα ἐστρωμένον ἐκεῖ ἑτοιμάσατε
They went off to the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.13Ἀπελθόντες δὲ εὗρον καθὼς εἰρήκει αὐτοῖς καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα
When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table.14Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ὥρα ἀνέπεσεν καὶ οἱ ἀπόστολοι σὺν αὐτῷ
Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins.15καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐπιθυμίᾳ ἐπεθύμησα τοῦτο τὸ πάσχα φαγεῖν μεθ’ ὑμῶν πρὸ τοῦ με παθεῖν
For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”16λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι 〈οὐκέτι〉 οὐ μὴ φάγω αὐτὸ ἕως ὅτου πληρωθῇ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τοῦ Θεοῦ
Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.17Καὶ δεξάμενος ποτήριον εὐχαριστήσας εἶπεν Λάβετε τοῦτο καὶ διαμερίσατε εἰς ἑαυτούς
For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come.”18λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν [ὅτι] οὐ μὴ πίω ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ γενήματος τῆς ἀμπέλου ἕως οὗ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔλθῃ
He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”19Καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων Τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενον τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν
After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.20καὶ τὸ ποτήριον ὡσαύτως μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι λέγων Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον καινὴ διαθήκη ἐν τῷ αἵματί μου τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐκχυννόμενον
“But here at this table, sitting among us as a friend, is the man who will betray me.21Πλὴν ἰδοὺ χεὶρ τοῦ παραδιδόντος με μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης
For it has been determined that the Son of Man must die. But what sorrow awaits the one who betrays him.”22ὅτι Υἱὸς μὲν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου κατὰ τὸ ὡρισμένον πορεύεται πλὴν οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι’ οὗ παραδίδοται
The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever do such a thing.23Καὶ αὐτοὶ ἤρξαντο συζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς τὸ τίς ἄρα εἴη ἐξ αὐτῶν τοῦτο μέλλων πράσσειν
Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them.24Ἐγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς τὸ τίς αὐτῶν δοκεῖ εἶναι μείζων
Jesus told them, “In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’25 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν κυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐξουσιάζοντες αὐτῶν εὐεργέται καλοῦνται
But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.26ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἀλλ’ μείζων ἐν ὑμῖν γινέσθω ὡς νεώτερος καὶ ἡγούμενος ὡς διακονῶν
Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.27τίς γὰρ μείζων ἀνακείμενος διακονῶν οὐχὶ ἀνακείμενος ἐγὼ δὲ ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν εἰμι ὡς διακονῶν
“You have stayed with me in my time of trial.28Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν τοῖς πειρασμοῖς μου
And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right29κἀγὼ διατίθεμαι ὑμῖν καθὼς διέθετό μοι Πατήρ μου βασιλείαν
to eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat.31Σίμων Σίμων ἰδοὺ Σατανᾶς ἐξῃτήσατο ὑμᾶς τοῦ σινιάσαι ὡς τὸν σῖτον
But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”32ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐκλίπῃ πίστις σου καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας στήρισον τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου
Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.”33 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Κύριε μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι
But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”34 δὲ εἶπεν Λέγω σοι Πέτρε οὐ φωνήσει σήμερον ἀλέκτωρ ἕως τρίς με ἀπαρνήσῃ 〈μὴ〉 εἰδέναι
Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler’s bag, or an extra pair of sandals, did you need anything?” “No,” they replied.35Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ὅτε ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς ἄτερ βαλλαντίου καὶ πήρας καὶ ὑποδημάτων μή τινος ὑστερήσατε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Οὐθενός
“But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one!36Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἀλλὰ νῦν ἔχων βαλλάντιον ἀράτω ὁμοίως καὶ πήραν καὶ μὴ ἔχων πωλησάτω τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀγορασάτω μάχαιραν
For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: ‘He was counted among the rebels.’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”37λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι τοῦτο τὸ γεγραμμένον δεῖ τελεσθῆναι ἐν ἐμοί Τό Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη καὶ γὰρ τὸ περὶ ἐμοῦ τέλος ἔχει
“Look, Lord,” they replied, “we have two swords among us.” “That’s enough,” he said. Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives38Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Κύριε ἰδοὺ μάχαιραι ὧδε δύο δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἱκανόν ἐστιν
Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives.39Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐπορεύθη κατὰ τὸ ἔθος εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἠκολούθησαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ μαθηταί
There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.”40γενόμενος δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ τόπου εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Προσεύχεσθε μὴ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς πειρασμόν
He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed,41Καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπεσπάσθη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ὡσεὶ λίθου βολήν καὶ θεὶς τὰ γόνατα προσηύχετο
“Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”42λέγων Πάτερ εἰ βούλει παρένεγκε τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ πλὴν μὴ τὸ θέλημά μου ἀλλὰ τὸ σὸν γινέσθω
Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him.43Ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος ἀπ’ (τοῦ) οὐρανοῦ ἐνισχύων αὐτόν
He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.44καὶ γενόμενος ἐν ἀγωνίᾳ ἐκτενέστερον προσηύχετο καὶ ἐγένετο ἱδρὼς αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ θρόμβοι αἵματος καταβαίνοντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief.45Καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀπὸ τῆς προσευχῆς ἐλθὼν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς εὗρεν κοιμωμένους αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης
“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.” Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested46καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Τί καθεύδετε ἀναστάντες προσεύχεσθε ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν
But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss.47Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἰδοὺ ὄχλος καὶ λεγόμενος Ἰούδας εἷς τῶν δώδεκα προήρχετο αὐτούς καὶ ἤγγισεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ φιλῆσαι αὐτόν
But Jesus said, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”48Ἰησοῦς δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰούδα φιλήματι τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδως
When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they exclaimed, “Lord, should we fight? We brought the swords!”49Ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν τὸ ἐσόμενον εἶπαν Κύριε εἰ πατάξομεν ἐν μαχαίρῃ
And one of them struck at the high priest’s slave, slashing off his right ear.50καὶ ἐπάταξεν εἷς τις ἐξ αὐτῶν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως τὸν δοῦλον καὶ ἀφεῖλεν τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ τὸ δεξιόν
But Jesus said, “No more of this.” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.51Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Ἐᾶτε ἕως τούτου καὶ ἁψάμενος τοῦ ὠτίου ἰάσατο αὐτόν
Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for him. “Am I some dangerous revolutionary,” he asked, “that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?52Εἶπεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς τοὺς παραγενομένους ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ στρατηγοὺς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ πρεσβυτέρους Ὡς ἐπὶ λῃστὴν ἐξήλθατε μετὰ μαχαιρῶν καὶ ξύλων
Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns.”
So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance.54Συλλαβόντες δὲ αὐτὸν ἤγαγον καὶ εἰσήγαγον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δὲ Πέτρος ἠκολούθει μακρόθεν
The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there.55Περιαψάντων δὲ πῦρ ἐν μέσῳ τῆς αὐλῆς καὶ συνκαθισάντων ἐκάθητο Πέτρος μέσος αὐτῶν
A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, “This man was one of Jesus’ followers!”56ἰδοῦσα δὲ αὐτὸν παιδίσκη τις καθήμενον πρὸς τὸ φῶς καὶ ἀτενίσασα αὐτῷ εἶπεν Καὶ οὗτος σὺν αὐτῷ ἦν
But Peter denied it. “Woman,” he said, “I don’t even know him!”57 δὲ ἠρνήσατο λέγων Οὐκ οἶδα αὐτόν γύναι
After a while someone else looked at him and said, “You must be one of them!” “No, man, I’m not!”
About an hour later someone else insisted, “This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too.”59Καὶ διαστάσης ὡσεὶ ὥρας μιᾶς ἄλλος τις διϊσχυρίζετο λέγων Ἐπ’ ἀληθείας καὶ οὗτος μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἦν καὶ γὰρ Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν
But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.60Εἶπεν δὲ Πέτρος Ἄνθρωπε οὐκ οἶδα λέγεις καὶ παραχρῆμα ἔτι λαλοῦντος αὐτοῦ ἐφώνησεν ἀλέκτωρ
At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”61καὶ στραφεὶς Κύριος ἐνέβλεψεν τῷ Πέτρῳ καὶ ὑπεμνήσθη Πέτρος τοῦ λόγου τοῦ Κυρίου ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πρὶν ἀλέκτορα φωνῆσαι σήμερον ἀπαρνήσῃ με τρίς
And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.62καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἔξω ἔκλαυσεν πικρῶς
The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him.63Καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ συνέχοντες αὐτὸν ἐνέπαιζον αὐτῷ δέροντες
They blindfolded him and said, “Prophesy to us! Who hit you that time?”64καὶ περικαλύψαντες αὐτὸν ⧼ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον καὶ⧽ ἐπηρώτων λέγοντες Προφήτευσον τίς ἐστιν παίσας σε
And they hurled all sorts of terrible insults at him. Jesus before the Council65καὶ ἕτερα πολλὰ βλασφημοῦντες ἔλεγον εἰς αὐτόν
At daybreak all the elders of the people assembled, including the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. Jesus was led before this high council,66Καὶ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡμέρα συνήχθη τὸ πρεσβυτέριον τοῦ λαοῦ ἀρχιερεῖς τε καὶ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν λέγοντες
and they said, “Tell us, are you the Messiah?” But he replied, “If I tell you, you won’t believe me.67Εἰ σὺ εἶ Χριστός εἰπὸν ἡμῖν Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ἐὰν ὑμῖν εἴπω οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε
And if I ask you a question, you won’t answer.68ἐὰν δὲ ἐρωτήσω οὐ μὴ ἀποκριθῆτε
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God’s right hand. ”69ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν δὲ ἔσται Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καθήμενος ἐκ δεξιῶν τῆς δυνάμεως τοῦ Θεοῦ
They all shouted, “So, are you claiming to be the Son of God?” And he replied, “You say that I am.”70Εἶπαν δὲ πάντες Σὺ οὖν εἶ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔφη Ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι
“Why do we need other witnesses?” they said. “We ourselves heard him say it.”71Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Τί ἔτι ἔχομεν μαρτυρίας χρείαν αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἠκούσαμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
