Psa 71:1 In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me… let me never be put to shame; He asks that his trust in God not end in public disgrace or apparent defeat before his enemies. Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;… save me by Your righteousness. Deliverance rests on God’s just and faithful character. David appeals to the Lord to act consistently with His promises and uphold those who depend on Him. Psa 71:2 In Your justice, rescue and deliver me;… Incline Your ear to me; David appeals to God as one who hears the distress of His servants and responds personally to their need. Psa 102:2 Do not hide Your face from me in my day of distress.… come quickly to my rescue. The urgency reflects danger too immediate to overcome by human strength. Psa 70:1 For the choirmaster. Of David. To bring remembrance.… Be my rock of refuge, David draws on the familiar landscape of caves, cliffs, and fortified heights, portraying God as his secure shelter when enemies pursue him. Psa 94:22 But the LORD has been my stronghold, and my God is my rock… the stronghold of my deliverance. God is not merely a temporary hiding place but the defender who preserves His people and brings them safely through affliction. 2Sa 22:2-3 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress… For You are my rock and my fortress; God is the psalmist’s secure foundation and dependable refuge amid danger. As a rock, He is unshaken; as a fortress, He protects His people from enemies and distress. 2Sa 22:2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress… lead me and guide me David depends on the Lord to direct his path rather than relying on his own strength or judgment. God’s protection includes His faithful guidance through threatening circumstances. Psa 25:4-5 Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.… for the sake of Your name. David appeals to God’s revealed character and covenant faithfulness. The Lord acts in a manner consistent with His holiness, righteousness, and commitment to His people. Psa 23:3 He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths… You free me from the net laid out for me, David portrays his enemies’ plots as a hidden snare intended to capture him when he is unaware. Such traps reflect the real threats, betrayals, and violent schemes he faced, yet he credits God alone with delivering him from danger. Psa 25:15 My eyes are always on the LORD, for He will… for You are my refuge. God is not merely a place of escape but David’s secure protector in the midst of distress. His confidence rests in the Lord’s faithful care rather than in his own strength or resources. Psa 142:5 I cry to You, O LORD: “You are my refuge… Into Your hands I commit my spirit; David entrusts his life wholly to God in the face of danger, placing himself under the Lord’s authority and protection. Jesus later used these words as He gave His life on the cross. Luk 23:46 Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father,… You have redeemed me, God had repeatedly delivered His people from peril and bondage, and David rests in that proven faithfulness. Psa 34:22 The LORD redeems His servants, and none who take refuge… O LORD, God of truth. Yahweh is the covenant God whose promises are sure, whose judgments are righteous, and whose care for His people does not fail. Isa 65:16 Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so… I hate those who cling to worthless idols, David rejects the worship of false gods, which drew Israel away from devotion to the LORD. Idols offered no life, protection, or help, despite the devotion of those who served them. Jon 2:8 Those who cling to worthless idols forsake… but in the LORD I trust. In contrast, David rests in the covenant God of Israel, whose power and faithfulness are real. His confidence is placed not in human-made gods but in the LORD alone. Psa 25:1-2 Of David. To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul;… I will be glad and rejoice in Your loving devotion, David responds to the Lord’s faithful care with deliberate joy. God’s covenant love remains constant even when His servant faces danger, opposition, and distress. Psa 13:5 But I have trusted in Your loving devotion;… for You have seen my affliction; The Lord is fully aware of the suffering David endures. His knowledge is not distant observation; He sees the circumstances of those who belong to Him and acts according to His faithfulness. Gen 31:42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham… You have known the anguish of my soul. God understands the inward grief that others may not see. David finds confidence in the Lord’s personal knowledge of his troubles and trusts Him for deliverance. Psa 38:9 O Lord, my every desire is before You; my groaning… You have not delivered me to the enemy; David praises God for preserving him from those who sought his life, including Saul and foreign foes. Though surrounded by danger, he recognizes that his survival rests in the Lord’s sovereign protection. God’s deliverance of David also points to His greater rescue of His people from sin, death, and the power of evil. Psa 41:2 The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will bless him… You have set my feet in the open. Rather than leaving David trapped or driven into hiding, God gave him safety, stability, and room to stand. The open place contrasts with the perilous wilderness and narrow escapes that marked David’s years of flight. God provides refuge for those who trust Him and leads them from distress into secure peace. Psa 18:36 You broaden the path beneath me so that… Be merciful to me, O LORD, David appeals directly to the covenant God whose compassion is the refuge of the afflicted. He does not claim relief as a right but depends on the LORD’s gracious care. Psa 86:3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I call to You all day long. for I am in distress; His trouble is severe and personal, likely arising from the dangers, opposition, and betrayals that marked much of his life. In such circumstances, David brings his suffering to God rather than concealing it. Psa 120:1 A song of ascents. In my distress I cried to the LORD,… my eyes fail from sorrow, Grief has exhausted him to the point that even his strength and sight seem diminished. His sorrow is not merely passing sadness but a consuming burden. Job 17:7 My eyes have grown dim with grief, and my whole body… my soul and body as well. The affliction reaches every part of his life, inwardly and physically. David describes the full weight of suffering while continuing to look to the LORD for deliverance. Job 14:22 He feels only the pain of his own body… For my life is consumed with grief David describes sorrow so severe that it has overtaken the course of his life. Surrounded by enemies and aware of his own need for mercy, he brings his anguish openly before the Lord. Psa 6:6-7 I am weary from groaning; all night I flood… and my years with groaning; His trouble has endured long enough to mark whole years, not merely a passing crisis. The groaning portrays sustained inward and outward suffering under affliction. Psa 38:8 I am numb and badly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart. my iniquity has drained my strength, David recognizes that sin has contributed to his misery and weakness. He does not excuse himself, but acknowledges the burden and consequences of his guilt before God. Psa 38:3-4 There is no soundness in my body because of Your anger;… and my bones are wasting away. His distress has affected his whole person, leaving him physically weakened and exhausted. Yet the psalm continues as a prayer of trust in the Lord, who alone can deliver him. Psa 32:3-4 When I kept silent, my bones became brittle.… Among all my enemies I am a disgrace, David’s suffering has become public, giving his enemies reason to scorn him and treat him as ruined. Honor carried great weight in Israel’s society, and public disgrace meant the loss of standing and security. Psa 69:19-20 You know my reproach, my shame and disgrace.… and among my neighbors even more. Those nearest to him have joined the rejection. Neighbors ordinarily shared daily life, protection, and responsibility within the community, so their contempt deepens his isolation. Pro 14:20 The poor man is hated even by his neighbor,… I am dreaded by my friends— Even former friends avoid him, likely fearing that his troubles will bring danger or shame upon them. His distress has left him without the support of those he once trusted. Psa 88:8 You have removed my friends from me; You have made me… they flee when they see me on the street. Public places that should have provided ordinary human contact instead reveal his abandonment. David’s experience anticipates Christ’s rejection and the flight of His disciples when He was arrested. Job 30:9-10 And now they mock me in song; I have become… I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind. Cut off from public regard and human support, David feels treated as one already dead. In Israel’s covenant community, remembrance by family and neighbors was closely tied to honor, security, and belonging. His enemies and former companions have left him isolated, yet his apparent abandonment by men does not place him beyond God’s care. Psa 88:5 I am forsaken among the dead, like the slain… I am like a broken vessel. Like discarded pottery shattered beyond ordinary use, David sees himself as ruined and without value in the eyes of others. The image reflects the crushing effect of reproach, fear, and betrayal, while also underscoring human frailty. God, however, is able to preserve and restore those whom the world considers broken. Jer 22:28 Is this man Coniah a despised and shattered pot?… For I hear the slander of many; David was surrounded by false reports intended to damage his reputation and turn others against him. His years of conflict with Saul, hostile leaders, and rival factions exposed him repeatedly to such malicious accusations. Jer 20:10 For I have heard the whispering of many:… there is terror on every side. Danger seemed to close in from every direction. David knew the fear of pursuit, war, betrayal, and unrest within Israel, with no obvious human refuge from his enemies. Jer 6:25 Do not go out to the fields; do not walk the road.… They conspire against me His opponents were not merely speaking against him but joining together to bring about his downfall. David experienced organized opposition in Saul’s court and later during Absalom’s rebellion, when trusted men turned against him. 2Ch 24:21 But they conspired against Zechariah… and plot to take my life. The threat was deadly and immediate. Saul sought David’s life for years, and later conspiracies endangered him as king. David brings the matter before the Lord, trusting Him to preserve the righteous and judge those who pursue evil. 1Sa 23:15 While David was in Horesh in the Wilderness of Ziph,… But I trust in You, O LORD; Surrounded by enemies and threatened by false accusations, David rests his confidence in the covenant God of Israel rather than in changing circumstances. His trust is not denial of danger but reliance on God’s protection, justice, and faithfulness. Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;… I say, “You are my God.” David openly claims the LORD as his God and places himself under His care. In a world filled with false gods and unstable alliances, this confession expresses exclusive allegiance to the One who had chosen Israel and remained faithful to His people. Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness… My times are in Your hands; David rests in God’s sovereign rule over the length, course, and changing circumstances of his life. Though surrounded by danger, he knows that neither enemies nor hardship can act outside God’s authority and care. Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings… deliver me from my enemies David asks God to rescue him from those who oppose him and seek his ruin. His confidence is not in his own strength but in the Lord’s justice and power to save. Psa 59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me… and from those who pursue me. The threat is immediate, recalling the years when David fled from Saul and other hostile forces. God alone is his refuge when enemies press in and escape appears impossible. Psa 7:1 A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD… Make Your face shine on Your servant; David asks God to look on him with favor, protection, and blessing. As God’s servant, he approaches in humility and depends upon the Lord’s presence rather than his own strength. Psa 119:135 Make Your face shine upon Your servant, and teach me… save me by Your loving devotion. He appeals to God’s faithful covenant love, trusting that the Lord rescues His people according to His mercy and unwavering commitment. Psa 109:26 Help me, O LORD my God; save me according to Your loving… O LORD, let me not be ashamed, for I have called on You. David appeals to the Lord for vindication, trusting that those who seek God will not be abandoned to public disgrace or dishonor before their enemies. His confidence rests on God’s covenant faithfulness rather than his own strength. Psa 25:2 In You, my God, I trust. Do not let me be put to shame;… Let the wicked be put to shame; Those who oppose God and pursue violence, deceit, and injustice will answer to His righteous judgment. Their apparent success will not endure, and God will ultimately distinguish the righteous from the wicked. Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;… let them lie silent in Sheol. David asks that the wicked be brought to the grave, where their boasting, threats, and harmful influence are ended. Their silence stands in contrast to the living worship and prayer of those who call upon the Lord. Psa 115:17 It is not the dead who praise the LORD,… May lying lips be silenced— David appeals to the Lord to restrain those who spread falsehood and slander. In Israel’s close-knit communities, a false accusation could destroy a person’s standing, livelihood, and safety. God alone sees the truth and judges those who use deception to harm the innocent. Psa 12:3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips… lips that speak with arrogance against the righteous, The righteous are often opposed by those who reject God’s ways and resent those who seek to live faithfully. Their accusations are marked by self-confidence and defiance rather than truth. Psa 17:10 They have closed their callous hearts;… full of pride and contempt. Pride leads the wicked to despise both God and those who belong to Him. David trusts that the Lord will vindicate the righteous and bring down those who exalt themselves through lies. Psa 123:3-4 Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy, … How great is Your goodness David marvels at the vast and inexhaustible goodness of God, seen in His faithful care for His people. Psa 145:7 They will extol the fame of Your abundant goodness… which You have laid up for those who fear You, God has prepared rich blessing for those who honor Him with reverence and obedience. His provision is secure, never uncertain or exhausted. Col 1:5 the faith and love proceeding from the hope stored up… which You have bestowed before the sons of men God’s favor is often displayed openly, making His faithfulness evident through the preservation, help, and blessing of those who belong to Him. Psa 145:12 to make known to men Your mighty acts and the glorious… on those who take refuge in You! Those who trust God find protection under His care. David’s confidence rests not in human strength but in the Lord as a safe shelter in trouble. Psa 57:1 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.”… You hide them in the secret place of Your presence God Himself is the refuge of His people. His presence provides security that reaches beyond outward danger, recalling the Most Holy Place where He made His dwelling known among Israel. Those who belong to Him are kept near to Him and preserved from Psa 91:1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High… from the schemes of men. Human plots, hostility, and persecution cannot overturn God’s purposes for His servants. Psa 64:2 Hide me from the scheming of the wicked,… You conceal them in Your shelter Like a fortified stronghold protecting those within its walls, God guards His people from threats that seek to destroy them. His protection includes deliverance from Psa 32:7 You are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble;… from accusing tongues. False charges, slander, and malicious speech may arise, but God knows the truth and upholds those who trust in Him. Psa 120:2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips… Blessed be the LORD, David answers God’s deliverance with praise, giving the LORD credit for preserving him in danger. Psa 28:6 Blessed be the LORD, for He has heard my cry for mercy. for He has shown me His loving devotion God’s faithful care had sustained David through opposition, fear, and isolation. Psa 18:50 Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows devotion… in a city under siege. Though surrounded by trouble as in a trapped city, David found that the LORD remained his refuge and protector. 2Ki 19:32-36 So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria:… In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from Your sight!” Overwhelmed by danger, David believed for a moment that he had been removed from God’s protecting care. Such fear was especially severe for an Israelite king who depended on the Lord’s covenant faithfulness amid enemies and personal trials. His words also anticipate Christ’s suffering, when He bore abandonment and judgment on behalf of sinners. Jon 2:4 At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight;… But You heard my plea for mercy David’s circumstances had not placed him beyond God’s reach. The Lord remained attentive to his cry and answered with compassion, showing that distress may cloud faith without changing God’s faithfulness. Psa 28:6 Blessed be the LORD, for He has heard my cry for mercy. when I called to You for help. Prayer was David’s refuge in danger. His deliverance confirmed that God receives the cries of those who turn to Him, even when they believe all hope is gone. Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried… Love the LORD, all His saints. God’s covenant people are called to respond to His steadfast love with wholehearted devotion, obedience, and worship. Love for the LORD is not merely an inward feeling but faithful allegiance shown in the way His people live. Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them… The LORD preserves the faithful, God watches over those who trust Him and remain devoted to Him. His preservation includes sustaining them through danger, affliction, and uncertainty, keeping them secure in His care even when circumstances are severe. Psa 37:28 For the LORD loves justice and will not forsake His saints…… but fully repays the arrogant. Those who exalt themselves, reject God’s authority, and rely on their own strength will face His righteous judgment. The LORD does not overlook pride or wickedness; He deals justly with all people. Psa 94:2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render a reward to the proud. Be strong and courageous, David closes this psalm with an exhortation to those who trust God. Having known danger, grief, opposition, and deliverance, he calls God’s people to stand firm rather than yield to fear. Their courage rests on the Lord’s protection and faithfulness. Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified… all you who hope in the LORD. Those who wait for the Lord’s help can live with confident expectation because He keeps His covenant and preserves those who rely on Him. Though trouble may remain for a time, their future is secure in God’s hands. Psa 27:14 Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
